This story felt similar to when Gerald Ford moved his first televised press conference following his decision to pardon Richard Nixon for his involvement in the Watergate Scandal up an hour just so people, including Ford himself, could watch Monday Night Football from start to finish. A story that I learned from watching your channel.
This was one of Carter's greatest accomplishments but this happened mostly because of the courage of Sadat and secondly the willingness of Begin to give up the Sinai to make a deal. Sadat paid for his courage with his life.
Although you're rightly being very serious, there's a funny (and admitted to being at least partialy true) story about the talks. Begin was being really intransigent at first, not giving an inch, then suddenly he at least offered the possibilty of giving back the Sinai. Carter was happy at this, but also puzzled, so he asked why Begin had offered this olive branch. Begin smiled and said "Blame my wife. She put the radio on when we woke up, and of course, the first song was "Begin the Beguine". I just had to offer SOMETHING up after that". Collaspe of both men in giggles....
First off, RIP to President Carter. Second, interestingly enough, this wasn’t the first time that you did a video about a Colts-Patriots game from the 1970s that ended in a monumental upset, as the Patriots won their first ever game against the Colts on December 19, 1971, 21-17, bumping the Colts down to a Wild Card.
Wasn't the only time Tip O'Neill affected policy due to professional sports. He was influential in pushing federal mandatory minimums for drug sentencing in the aftermath of Len Bias' death.
Love your content and videos…keep up the great work. Regarding 1977 end of season Colts - Pats matchup, “New England knew their fate by the time they took the field in old Memorial Stadium. Miami had played on Saturday and beaten Buffalo. The Patriots were eliminated.”
What I remember is that after this game, Colt's head coach Ted Marchibroda said, "I'm not sure about Joe yet because he hasn't figured out our system." A reporter wrote the next day that maybe Marchibroda should learn Joe's system.
Couple of interesting facts about the US boycott of the 1980 Olympics, Russia responded 4 years later by boycotting the LA Olympics, and the reason for the boycott was because Russia invaded Afghanistan who was directly involved with 9-11. Anyway, RIP President Carter, I didn’t know much about what he did as I was only 3 years old when he was elected, but he was a pretty decent president and a great humanitarian
There was no such thing as streaming back then, so preempting a significant portion of the game discussed here would've been a huge issue. Until I watched this video, all I was aware of regarding Carter's impact on sports was the massive boycott of the Summer Olympics in the USSR (the Eastern Bloc retaliated when Los Angeles hosted 4 years later).
In Sep of 2003, the Raiders at Titans W1 ESPN SNF game was delayed by about 20 minutes because President George W Bush was speaking to the Country regarding the War on Terror.
Yup. Say what you will about him as a President (or......better yet, don't say it, that's not what any of us are here for) but there's ample proof he was a genuinely good and decent man.
Anyone else notice Baltimore Colts scheduled in 2 of first 3 Monday Night Football telecast to start 1978 campaign? Other was 38-0 fiasco of a season opener at Texas Stadium. Bob Irsay's sabotage of his own franchise was off to a rousing start. Jimmy Carter also threw out first pitch at deciding Game 7 of 1979 World Series which did not end well for my Orioles.
They were 10-4 the year before and had a strong offense. It makes sense why they were favored on MNF appearances. Bert Jones and his injury problems set this team up to fail in 78
@@marcusmcgraw3519 So did the contract dispute between Irsay and Lydell Mitchell who got exiled to the Chargers for Joe Washington (the other star of this video) prior to that season.
I thought it was the day just over a year later when the Iranian hostage crisis began and the Seahawks gained minus seven yards of offense against the Rams.
The United States boycott of the 1980 summer Olympics was in response of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan in December of 1979. It was the right decision then and it’s still the right decision today.
It should have been obvious that he was not truly cut out for it when he barely skated by an incumbent president who was never elected. This country was already hesitant on him, and he never did anything to reassure them
He was terrible when dealing with the issue of the middle east. He never understood or tried to understand the beliefs of the people of the land of every nation besides irseal. He was a terrible judge of character. Great man bad president.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworldYou’re absolutely right about that. Reagan marked the beginning of our long national decline, perpetuated since by both mainline parties, the logical conclusion of which will be economic nationalism under Trump.
Maybe I'm missing something but what would have been the big deal if ABC aired their football game and NBC/CBS aired Jimmy's speech? I know Jeff Foxworthy once mentioned how if you only had three big networks back then and how if the President was on he was on every channel, but just this once...?
This deal is one of the reasons the US gives military aid to Isreal and Egypt every year since. The initial decision to make the announcement at 9 pm shows how inept Carter was at public relations. This was an era where you saw an NFL game live or you did not see it. The story of theannouncement of the Camp David accords was not going to change no matter when announced. It's a little macabre to think about how long this one has been "in the can" so to speak, but you're not wrong

Jimmy Carter’s greatest accomplishment was brokering a peace deal between Cotton Hill and Hank Hill around Christmas 2001.

10:26; AKA Tip O'Neill.
Tip O'Neill had a thick New England accent and the perfect voice to say "I'm gonnah club dah muddahfuckah to death."
From Massachusetts.
And the best House speaker of my lifetime, who referred to his wife as “the speaker of [his] house”.

I was born 2 months & 9 days after this happened. One of the few things I know about Jimmy Carter was that he was president when I was born.
Its crazy because he died on an nfl Sunday and the networks had a choice to cut away from the games or not
I cringed slightly at "peaches and cream" considering Carter came from the Peach State. I guess no pun was intended.
