      Makes me wonder if you could build an "Ugly" Capital Ship. Like using the ring of a Lucrehulk, a Dreadnought-class Cruiser for the central Core, and the engine sections of multiple Venator or Imperium-class Star Destroyers. Stuff a planetary militia could weld together by salvaging the remains of some old battlefield or junkyard in the void of space.

    Another "Ugly" I think was an overall good fighter was the "Clutch" starfighter. It was from the book "I, Jedi". Described as a tie ball cockpit being clutched in a hand of trifoils. It had shields, lasers, ion cannon and missiles. Fairly versatile and some even had hyperdrives. Corron Horn used it to great effect in the book. In my opinion.

    Another Ugly that I think wouldn’t be terrible was the so called Z-Wing found in legends, which used a Z-95 Headhunter’s fuselage and X-Wing wings. The Z-95 and X-Wing were quite similar to each other in both appearance and roles, so while obviously not as good as a stock fighter, it’s not so far fetched or impractical like combining a Y-Wing and a TIE is. I would absolutely take this design over most other uglies when going into a fight as it would basically function as a discount X-Wing.

As the S-Foils deploy, the cockpit rotates 90 degrees to become the top of the ship while the foils themselves (the little wings) open up and give the fighter a t shape. While we only ever see this 90 degree rotation in the films, Legends lore says it can rotate the full 360 degrees, effectively keeping the pilot relatively stationary while the fighter rotates around the cockpit during combat maneuvers.

    There's also the TIE-clutch, built by one of the successor-Moffs' engineers. As I recall it they had a TON of advanced TIEs (and parts) lying around but not the resources to maintain and supply them so they took them to the proverbial chop-shop, hacked out a lot of systems they didn't need and couldn't afford anyway and re-arranged the "wings"/solar panels in a way reminsicent of Chiss Clawcraft. Apparently they performed surprisingly well and didn't need the specialised docking provisions for most other TIE variants, being able to use their bottom panels as improvised landing gear.

    There are a few more downsides to this Ugly. Since we're talking about a Tie-Fighter cockpit pod, we only have one viewpoint, which is the large window up front. You still have zero visibility to the sides and rear and would have to compensate with sensors. The rotating wings means you have to keep track while you're maneuvering in tight areas. No astromech so you need to rely on pre-programmed coordinates for hyperspace jumps.

    It's really a pit we never got an official artwork of the Chir'daki. It would also be nice to see in brought back in the new canon, since Twi'lek as warriors are pretty well-established from The Clone Wars and Rebels.
    There's a lot of different interpretations of it, but I would assume the collar for the S-foils had to be mounted toward the aft of the ball (and thus surrounding the twin ion engines), because otherwise it would block the hatch from opening to let the pilot in and out.

    The very same book had another Ugly that was pretty good, the Gand modified TIE bomber that replaced the Bomb Chute with an extra concussion missile launcher and added another pair of laser cannons, shields, hyperdrive, and Interceptor style cutouts in the forward Solar/radiator panels, I Jedi also had Leona Tavira's Tri-fighters which are uglies that end up similar to V38s/TIE Phantoms just with a traditional TIE ball cockpit and an ion cannon on the top spike. There's also the Deathraven, which is two B-WingE2s strapped to a single cockpit with two extra light ion cannons for good measure.

    You forgot the Tri-fighter, aka, "Clutch". It was a good fighter. It had shields (albeit no where near as strong as an x-wing's), an ion cannon, was fairly maneuverable, and was fairly versatile as well (had room for a hyperdrive to be added, although it required manual astronavigation I think). Corran flew one during his infiltration of the Invids, and he didn't dislike it (still preferred the x-wing, but it was better than other fighters he was familiar with).

    • @kharilane1340

      Because most of them wouldn't survive long. Maybe for a one way trip off a desolate planet, but never for any real length of time. Most Uglies were flying death traps that were used only because extreme necessity required it.

  • @mrjtfang2

  • @konata777

    My personal favorite (and personal opinion on best ugly star fighter) is the Y-TIE. It’s pretty much the opposite of the TYE-Wing, aka the worst ugly ever, Eckharts described in the video. It takes a Y-Wing and removed its slow engines with the solar panel sides and engines of a TIE fighter. Basically it combines both strengths: the durability and firepower of a Y-Wing with the fast engines of a TIE fighter.

  • @commanderbastard1993
    @commanderbastard1993 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be fair...This succeeded in the point of an ugly. It has the pilot visibility of the TIE and it's powerful engines while having the firepower of a X-Wing and a split power source so even if your weapon are taken offline, you can still limp home. The rotating wing would take some getting used to for inexperienced pilots but having the rotation with the ball craft, makes it have a low hit profile. I would actually use this.
