Today, we look at arguably the best ugly Starfighter in Star Wars Legends. Uglies, are ships cobbled together out of spare parts, and we, specifically, will be looking at the Chir'daki, first used during the Galactic Civil War, and used by Rogue Squadron during the Bacta War.

Makes me wonder if you could build an "Ugly" Capital Ship. Like using the ring of a Lucrehulk, a Dreadnought-class Cruiser for the central Core, and the engine sections of multiple Venator or Imperium-class Star Destroyers. Stuff a planetary militia could weld together by salvaging the remains of some old battlefield or junkyard in the void of space.

So this was a re-manufactured fighter. Given a few years and generational redesign and improvement, this could have been a champ fighter.
Also looks like a StarFury (Babylon 5)

Well it did sound like he said Drakh around the 5:48 mark. Technically they weren't seen until after the shadow war in the one season of Crusade but still in the Babylon 5 universe. Now all the universes are collapsing into one another..... Hollywood has become the great black hole of Sci-Fi and creativity. LOL
Thought this looked like a Starfury from the thumbnail. Before I even watched the vid I said "bet the wings swivel around the cockpit!", just like a Starfury.
This could make an exceptional starfighter had they connected the two systems better. Also, using the TIE's two ion cannons in conjunction with the X-wing's lasers would provide excellent firepower.
Those starfighters wouldn't be so ugly if they had Raid installed in them

Ugly Starfighter - An abomination of the glory that is the X-Wing. :P
Another "Ugly" I think was an overall good fighter was the "Clutch" starfighter. It was from the book "I, Jedi". Described as a tie ball cockpit being clutched in a hand of trifoils. It had shields, lasers, ion cannon and missiles. Fairly versatile and some even had hyperdrives. Corron Horn used it to great effect in the book. In my opinion.
It's too bad no story ever followed up on I, Jedi. The Invids were an interesting enemy and the Clutch was a really cool idea.

I would be very curious about the fuel cell arrangement for the uglies. The chir'daki probably dropped the TIE cannons for fuel. Having six engines going can't be fuel efficient...
I don't think it actually uses the X-Wing's engines, just their reactors. If you look at some of the pictures, you'll see that the back halves of the X-Wing engines have been removed.
Chromatic Rascal I could swear there was even a line saying that the x wing engines powered the hyperdrive.

Timberwolf but most Star Wars ships are electric. They use ion engines which propel charged atoms to produce thrust, so they really just have to power a nuclear reactor onboard the ship which should last a long time

The Invid Clutch was a pretty good Ugly as well, from “I, Jedi”. A TIE ball cockpit with cutbacks on the side for improved pilot visibility with three wings in a inverted Y shape. Incorporated basic shields and armed with two laser and one ion cannons.

The TIE wing is underrated. If anything, putting powerful engines from a heavy ship onto a light TIE hull should make it extremely fast.

@@4eversquidsisters266 My best guess would be that the TIE's reactor isn't enough to power two Y-wing engines, so the engines are working at a fraction of their normal capacity.
The clutch isn’t horrible either.

to be honest, if I was making a ship, I would do the following
bomber, y wing body with B wing armament in the rear for massive armament boost with the same thruster's and stabler wing's to improve speed and maneuverability
mainline fighter (jack of all trade's): X wing body with arc 170 style wing's except Z95 headhunter wing's for the S foil's
interceptor: delta 7/ a wing mix with tie interceptor wing's on its side's acting like the Eta 2's wing's

Seeing as it's Canon (partly) through Star Wars: Commander, is it possible that the Galactic Empire's Project: Blackwing had a secret objective of unlocking immortality (possibly based on one of Plagueis's attempts) and used by Palpatine around the time of the Battle of Endor? Seeing as the original version of the virus in Legends was created by Darth Drear in order to achieve immortality for Sith Lords, something Canon Palpatine was looking for due to believing that the Empire shouldn't out live him. I'm probably thinking about this from randomly becoming interested in the Death Troopers novel recently for some reason. (Firth attempt, please answer).

Honestly, that Ugly ship of the Twileks that your describing sounds pretty awesome. If they could have incorporated the life support of the X Wing into Tie Fighter cockpit then it could have been one of the best fighters of the era
The life support isn't a major knock. The only real draw back to this fighter is the lack of projectile launchers. I think that once the Twi'lek got their manufacturing feet under them, that would be the first upgrade to the Chirdaki Mark II
so was the collar like the mandalorian's ship from rebels and clone wars where the wings can go in a full 360 around the cockpit

@@Gingerking_45 Yup, if you look closely whenever the B-Wing deploys it's S-Foils, you'll see that the cockpit is off to one side and the rest of the ship is to the other, allowing for the B-Wing to land. As the S-Foils deploy, the cockpit rotates 90 degrees to become the top of the ship while the foils themselves (the little wings) open up and give the fighter a t shape. While we only ever see this 90 degree rotation in the films, Legends lore says it can rotate the full 360 degrees, effectively keeping the pilot relatively stationary while the fighter rotates around the cockpit during combat maneuvers.

Another Ugly that I think wouldn’t be terrible was the so called Z-Wing found in legends, which used a Z-95 Headhunter’s fuselage and X-Wing wings. The Z-95 and X-Wing were quite similar to each other in both appearance and roles, so while obviously not as good as a stock fighter, it’s not so far fetched or impractical like combining a Y-Wing and a TIE is. I would absolutely take this design over most other uglies when going into a fight as it would basically function as a discount X-Wing.
I love this idea, it could still use a few tweaks IMHO but combining the best of both a Tie and X-Wing is an excellent idea

@@Tar-Numendil if the Empire had mass produced TIE Hunters and Defenders with carrier style cruisers like the Venator as the back bone of its fleets instead of the ISDs, they would have won the war. The Rebels only real advantage was their Starfighters versatility and their pilot's survival rate.
@@kharilane1340 Yeah if Thrawn had had his way the Rebellion would have been annihilated. Palpatine was brilliant, but he didn't actually know how to fight a war. He wasn't controlling both sides like he was during the Clone Wars.
This is also my favourite ugly, it also makes the most sense considering the rebels main fighter was the x-wing and the only standardized tie variant not to use the ball cockpit was the bomber.

They're a Jedi faction that used blasters and other weapons one was so good that she was able to send one of her own bolts straight up an enemy's blaster barrel. They also believed in using the force as little as possible so they focused on other skills like martial arts and military tactics like guerrilla warfare, urban tactics, espionage, and infiltration.

They are not a "Jedi" faction. They are fellow Force users with a philosophy that was very different than the Jedi Way. Just because someone uses The Force for good doesn't necessarily make them a Jedi. It's just like there are various sects of Christianity but they aren't all considered Catholic.

Uglies could be made with parts from the LEGO series.
The Gand modified TIE Bombers and the Chir'daki, both from the Bacta War were some of my favorite Star Wars starships.

The Sith Rule of Two is at work here. After Darth Vader's loss to Obi-Wan on Mustafar, Darth Sidious no longer saw Vader as being a truly worthy apprentice but he was stuck with him since Vader was still the most powerful of his dark side acolytes. Sidious wanted to turn Luke to the Dark-side so he could replace Vader with Luke. Luke would never just join up if Sidious just outright destroyed the Rebels. Sidious needed Vader and Luke to fight it out to put Luke at the very edge of turning, just as he had Anakin kill Count Dooku. Vader took the Dark Path but Luke chose the Light and Sidious lost both.

What kind of Sci Fi factions compare similarity to the Forerunners in Halo in size, technology advances, manpower, fleet size, capabilities, and weapon destructive potential?
The only three which I can think of that compare in similar power to the Forerunners are the Eldar, Necrons, and maybe the Interim Coalition of Governance when they were still only fighting the Xeelee in the center of the Milky Way galaxy.
Is there any other factions that compare to them in those categories?
the culture of the Iain M banks Culture novels has fast attack ships that can destroy planets so I guess they rank somewhere around or in excess of the power level of the fore runners, the same is true of the later commonwealth in the peter F hamilton commonwealth novels, particularly the void trilogy, they had planet cracking weapons as ship to ship munitions and a 'deterrence fleet' that was basically a ascended god.

I'm aware of the Culture but I always thought they were way more powerful then the Forerunners just look at their megastructure ring that surrounds the galaxy that makes the megastructures of the Forerunners look like a small molecule to a large ocean.
I think that they were instead of trying to fuse the electrical systems of the 2 ships together they were instead trying to get them to work together but as individually governed systems splitting the work load

The Mandalorians design and build their own fighters. They don't need to kitbash together a bunch of Uglies.

That was exactly what I thought. Personally I'd rather fly a Clutch than one of these - especially if it were one of the 2 which were retrofitted with hyperdrives.

Technically the Night Caller, the modified CR-90 corvette that Wraith Squadron steals from Warlord Zsinj's fleet would probably be the closest. It was a Corellian Corvette that had a hangar bay attached underneath the bridge to give the ship a limited starfighter carrying capacity.
The Trawn's Revenge mod has a ship that's half Acclamator and half Munificent class. Relevant lore states the Empire slap-dashed mothballed components together in order to make freighters.

There’s a ton of Vulture droids lying around. Couldn’t someone figure out how to rig a crude cockpit to it? The fuel slug propulsion system isn’t great but it gets the job done for a planetary defense militia on a budget. The weapons systems are good enough. The speed is good. Life support isn’t necessary. Shields would be preferred but not having them is by no means disqualifying especially with the aforementioned speed. Starfighter hyperdrives are more of a luxury. That’s what I’d go with
There are a few more downsides to this Ugly. Since we're talking about a Tie-Fighter cockpit pod, we only have one viewpoint, which is the large window up front. You still have zero visibility to the sides and rear and would have to compensate with sensors. The rotating wings means you have to keep track while you're maneuvering in tight areas. No astromech so you need to rely on pre-programmed coordinates for hyperspace jumps.

I actually have a soft spot for Uglies. They can be really terrible or one of the best fighters in a battle! Plus the way Allston and Stackpole describe them is just amazing because they probably just spun a wheel and put that in the story

You got in to star wars legends books the same way i did, i also started the young jedi knights series in middle school library, they didn't have every book but i enjoyed. And there was like the first 3 new jedi order books.
In high school i started the legacy of the force, luckily my vice principal was a huge star wars fan and he supplied me books when the library didn't have them, and only half of the fate of the jedi series.

I don't know, nothing's really stopping you from watching them. I can say that the first few episodes are on the boring side.

The Eclipse Dreadnought could carry a Victory class which are 900m long but other than that we really don't have SSD carrying ISD's. If we include new canon then the Supremacy could carry 2 Resurgent class battlecruisers which are basically buffed ISD's with a lot more firepower internally and 6 more on the outside on those triangular slits on the backside of the wingtips. If you loathe new canon then there is a fan made ship which carries a whole lot of isds and looks like a fusion of the SSD and the Death Star. It's featured in Eckartsladder's video on Fanon ships.
This thing is the quintesential definition of: something that shouldn't work at all, but it works, incredibly very well

Those Starfighters doesn't operate bad (for some of them) but they are good on what they are good at...well...not handing out Coffee to there pilots and stuff, but every starfighter has there own speciality to them.

Take the torpedo pods from a 7-95 headhunter and modify them for the x-wing S-foil. Boom, multi-role Deathseed.

My personal favorite (and personal opinion on best ugly star fighter) is the Y-TIE. It’s pretty much the opposite of the TYE-Wing, aka the worst ugly ever, Eckharts described in the video. It takes a Y-Wing and removed its slow engines with the solar panel sides and engines of a TIE fighter. Basically it combines both strengths: the durability and firepower of a Y-Wing with the fast engines of a TIE fighter.
What if we have a versus that's The Arbiter and a group (perhaps a fleet, or ground combat force) of various Covenant forces (minus brutes, for obvious reasons) vs General Grievous and a group of various Separatist forces, similar sized forces for fairness.
I think it'd be interesting to see different variables come into play, like how infantry square off, Hunters vs. B3 Ultra, Grunts vs. B1's, Elites vs. Magnaguards/BX Commando droids etc. as well as technology, the tactics of Arbiter vs. Grievous, the individual efforts of Arbiter and Grievous (since they are both powerful combatants on top of being Tacticians), fleet advantages and disadvantages etc.
I honestly think that'd be an amazing (albeit slightly subjective and hard to put together) versus analysis, I didn't put it very organized or detailed, but I'm sure you could, with your extensive knowledge on both Halo and Star Wars.
Eckhart seemed to have forgotten the Clutch fighter. Only a bit slower than an X-wing, but lightly shielded, WAY more maneuverable, highly responsive, and it has ion cannons.
I personally like the calor piece they've made, but I like the torpedo launching body of the X-wing with the additions of Tie Advanced wings.
Heres an idea for a vid series: Speculative Ugly Analysis. People comment on what two or three ships they think would be good together, and you basically tell them yes or no, and why they don't and/or how they could work. Like, for example, a N-1 starfighter with Tie Interceptor S-Foils, yes, this is my personal example. What do you think?

As I recall it they had a TON of advanced TIEs (and parts) lying around but not the resources to maintain and supply them so they took them to the proverbial chop-shop, hacked out a lot of systems they didn't need and couldn't afford anyway and re-arranged the "wings"/solar panels in a way reminsicent of Chiss Clawcraft. Apparently they performed surprisingly well and didn't need the specialised docking provisions for most other TIE variants, being able to use their bottom panels as improvised landing gear.
With a proper design revision, the attentions of a real Shipwright and access to an actual shipyard... well, what could have been, eh?
A possibility is *ARC-170 wings,* engines and the wing mounted guns on a smaller more maneuverable/compact ship that didn't have three crew (and what did that copilot do anyway?).
Stick it on a *X-Wing body* and you have a rocket, albeit with the turbolasers instead of lasercannons.
Stick it on a *Y-Wing body* and it's still faster and more maneuverable than a Y-Wing, plus it still has extra nose guns (anti fighter lasercannons), a rear gunner, and a load of ordinance that can include anti fighter missiles. Or just protons or other anti capital ship ordinance with the big wing turbolasers for taking on larger ships.
And what if a *Star Wing's* wings were stuck on something?
Still, considering how slowly Star Wars tech advances, the best cheap solution would be to just take old, old, snubfighters and upgrade some of the systems. Better electronics/avionics and hotting up the engines seems the best bang for you buck.
After all, the Millennium Falcon is damn old and it still kicks ass.
There are also probably obsolete ship designs that didn't really work with the technology of the day, but stick on some modern more compact tech and it could solve their shortcomings - for example Headhunters couldn't fit standard astromechs, but the new BB units are far smaller so they could possibly fit with a bit of tinkering and then you have a cheap X-Wing that can calculate it's own hyperspace jumps unlike hyperspace modified Headhunters of the clone wars era that had to use navigation chips.
Imagine a ARC-170 (again) modified and upgraded with some X-Wing tech, a ARC-180GTI …
Hell, a lot of ancient Sith stuff is better designed than standard Tie fighters, just strip it out and use modern bits and that's a decent fighter.
