I was lucky enough to be at this show all those years ago. I knew it was being recorded for Japanese television, but it took TH-cam for me to finally get to relive the experience almost 30 years later. Those of us in NYC had a great radio station named “The Cool Sounds of CD 101.9” that spread the joy of a special kind of music that , to this day never fails to uplift my spirits. Much gratitude to the Bottom Line and CD 101.9, for all the years of fantastic musical experiences they brought to us. Much love to Chieli and Deborah. George, you’ll always live on in the music you left us with. Rest in Peace my friend.
Yesss indeed. Smooth Jazz CD 101.9 was a wonderful treat for New Yorkers. And theses guys, omg... so wish I could have seen this lineup. I was once brave enough to go to jazz concerts by myself. I saw Fourplay, Spyro Gyra, Hiroshima, Keiko Matsui, Chris Botti among others, by myself. I thank my uncle that I grew up with for introducing me to quality sounds, jazz,, classic rock, etc... Long live great music!
@@kathygaskins7132 I hate to say this, but when they switched format to the “Smooth” sounds of CD 101.9 I went back to my rock and roll roots… My attitude became…. If I want to listen to elevator music, I’ll ride elevators…. There were so many great artists originally on CD101 The Rippingtons, Special EFX, Richard Elliot, Dave Koz, Candy Dulfer, Lee Ritenour, Nelson Rangell…and so many more. When the format changed, many of these artists still were played on the station but, they only played the more mellow cuts, not the edgy ones that had some bite to them… Listen to the Rippingtons Live in LA album as a good example of what I loved about that format. That isn’t to say there weren’t some more mellow songs that I loved… Anything by Basia, Patti Austin, Andreas Vollenweider, Tinseltown by Ronnie Jordan, Dave Grusin, Peter White…. Give me enough time and the list becomes endless…. And living in NYC, getting to see these artist play was priceless…. I got to see so many shows on the Jazz Cruises at the South Street Seaport. (Thank You Rich Engel) as well as many of these artist at the lunchtime Jazz Wednesday’s at the WTC Damn, I miss those days… Kathy, thanks for your comment, 👍🏻🥂❤️😎 it’s always nice to be brought back to these posts by other people comments.
@@topcat43truffles15 I used to go to Jazz Wed at WTC, saw Joe Sample there. And you're right, the station did change. I used to get my classic rock fix on 2forTues, q104.3, they still do that but I'm almost totally away from all radio and TV now, close to 30yrs. Thank goodness for ppl who post vids like this, showing how it used to be. 😊 🎶 👏
Was about to say Fourplay is the only other comparable jazz ensemble however the list got a little longer with Spyro Gyra, Fatburger, Last Exit, YellowJackets... but these guys, my goodness, they are phenom!
@1:24 it says 1984. Are you sure this was the 1990 show? I think they performed there often. I know I saw one of their "Bottom Line" shows; but can't recall the date. There used to be a Tower Records store on the next block from the Bottom Line. Or was it J&R? No I think that was down by City Hall. Most importantly just a few blocks away on East 7th Street was McSorely's Old Alehouse, LOL - still there today!
Definitely was 1990, Special EFX had just released the album “Just Like Magic” and they had played at the World Trade Center a few days before this show at the Bottom Line.
..this was a very different band compared to the various incarnations that have emerged since the passing of Special Efx cofounder George Jinda RIP..this lineup is really tight and hot..there’s a recent upload of Special Efx live in Santiago Chile with George still cookin’..a young Lionel Cordew on drums, and Vana Gierig on keyboards and Tracy Wormworth on bass!..another fire 🔥 lineup..jazz lives..stay safe and stay strong..New York April 16, 2022..
Yes, these were EFX's best days. George & Chieli together with a tight backing band of rotating, exceptional sidemen and -women. I was really into this band starting at age 13/14 and George is the reason I became a professional percussionist. I just to practice hours to this music and I learned to play many of the instruments he played, just by myself. Years later when I moved to a big city, I was able to get some 'official' lessons by masters, but before that it was all me, my little room and good, old George. May he rest in peace (he only made it to 60 :((( ). Years after his passing I was able to talk backstage to his oldest friend and the co-composer of almost all of his compositions: the great Hungarian pianist 'Szakcsi' (Bela Lakatos), who sadly passed away age 79 in october 2022. Anyways, to be able to see some of the older live shows with George behind his rack of toys. I only saw them live once: Amsterdam Jazz Festival, summer 1992. Backstage I talked to George, Chieli, Lionel Cordew, the late Mark Ledford and Gerald Veasley , who was in town playing with the Zawinul Syndicate and who dropped by to see his EFX buddies. Unforgettable memories of a time in the music business unfortunately long gone.... BLESSINGS!
Ahhhh man great set up for the band 👏
Ahh man thanks 2024 this is great to see
What a treat to see this video. Early Double Feature music{first song, anyway}, music that soothes the soul, played this CD to death, lol.

CD 101.9 was the station I listened to and then I would go to the Tower Records store on B. way and 66th Street and buy the CD's.
Halfway through the first song and I already know this is going to be amazing ❤
Danke für Hochladen. Alt aber gut . 👍
