    They're so special. Saw my first "Hummer" when I was about 3-and-a-half years old. I thought it was a big bug trying to "get" me. HaHa ! Even now, on the rare occasion I see one, they still surprise me briefly. And I came across a female ruby- throated hummingbird with an active nest once. It's always a good idea to keep a small brush pile for them to find spiders to feed their babies and for webs to build their nests. No pesticides or herbicides as long as I live here. Just a rainbow of self-sowing Morning Glories. Enjoy !!!

    Pretty neat idea...this just showed up in my suggested videos today. I've seen another one that used the oil drip pan and the PVC pipes with the holes drilled in. His looked quite a bit different from yours; I actually like both of them. I like your barrel idea underneath yours - makes it look really rustic and pretty.

    You know another benefit of the log being in the barrel, is by some off chance wildlife falls into the barrel unsuspecting and cannot get out the log will assist them in escaping. It's always a good idea to put some structure inside of barrels or anything collecting water in case this should happen.

    Hummingbird Bath looks beautiful. I saw another similar video using the plastic plants, couldn't figure it out, but it's actually the best idea. Real plants would make the water dirty fast. Plastic ones give you the effect, and can easily be cleaned as needed. And yours are pretty realistic looking.
    I think you guys did a great video, and look forward to seeing one with all the hummingbirdies splashing in your clever creation. Your camera work is perfect, and Aiden did a splendid job of "Carol Merril-ing".😆😆😆

      I think i saw another similar set up, where the guy used an "L" shape pvc w/elbow. Otherwise you could probably use two that joined with a "T" connection. Wouldnt be too hard on the pump, but i wonder if the amount of water coming out would be less?
      This is a great idea, might try it myself!

    Kudos to designing, & then making this! Since the water is cloudy, probably from rock dust from the pebbles, I think it should be cleared up by dumping this water into a container for re-use.
    Rinse the gravel with a hose, & catch that water coming out of drip holes, spilling into a bucket until it runs clear. Remove bucket & think of ways to re-use the water, like water plants, soak & wash bird feeders or soak dirty dishes before removing garbage with a brush, & put rinsed dishes in hot, soapy water in a dish pan, or use it to flush the toilet until it's used up.
    Rock dust may harm a hummingbird's delicate constitution. Also, when making nectar to fill hummingbird feeders, don't add red food coloring. It weakens their egg shells & those embryos seem to die, possibly from becoming infected or dehydrated, since shells may be too porous.

    • @beckylunkenheimer5523
      @beckylunkenheimer5523  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cheryl Anderson😊Thanks for advice...put pebbles have been polished, therefore no dust. The water appears cloudy, but is not.👍😊 We also never use dye in our nectar. We tend to use red glass feeders.❤️ Love our hummers and take care of them like we do all God’s creatures.

    • @cherylanderson3340
      @cherylanderson3340 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@beckylunkenheimer5523 Hi Becky. I guess the water just looked cloudy. Sorry.
      I'm hoping to do a version of what you designed, for the assortment of birds I get here, in spring & summer, but keep forgetting. Your clever design inspired me to try something new.
      For years, I've used a large, terracotta colored plastic plant pot saucer, weighted down with a large rock, plus smaller ones so birds, butterflies & bees can perch, & sip water from in between the smaller rocks.
      There's enough room that even the Blue Jays & Robins have enough space & depth of water to splash around in.
      The water gets splashed out with each bath, & also, many birds poop in the water, so I have to dump & hose it out & refill again & again, all day. When I forget, or am away all day, it can get funky & don't want birds drinking dirty water, so had to stop altogether. Now they drink & splash in a tub of soil. In winter water got in & when it froze, the tub expanded & the top popped off & no longer fits. So now, they drink & splash in there! I guess the poops are getting composted now.
      Still, I'm going to try something like what you've done. Hoping the filter on the pump can help keep the water clean!
      Do the hummingbirds poop in there like the big birds do? I've seen that even the babies instinctively know enough to not poop in their tiny nests, so wonderin if they also know enough to not poop in their bathing water.
      I have a hummingbird feeder but have never used it. There have been some plants in my yard that they've liked, but my big, beautiful Bleeding Heart, which I'd seen hummers visit, didn't come back last year. It's been overtaken by Periwinkle vinca & Lily of the Valley, along with several other favorite plants. They're pretty too, & both do have tons of little flowers, so maybe they still find nectar there. Think it's time I relocate & hang up their feeder though!
      Thanks again for posting your clever bird bath!

    • @youresoakinginit2113
      @youresoakinginit2113 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I thought the water looked cloudy, too, but now i realize its probably just color of the oil tray. I've seen comments that aluminum or galvanized arent necessarily the best for the birds, but not sure if thats really a thing. A good substitute might be an old cafeteria tray (or two?). A blue one would be perfect, birdies might notice it more and asdociate the color with water (like we do!). Painting it blue seems not advisable because of the toxicity, but a wildlife store might have a special paint that's safe.

    • @xanadu1jw
      @xanadu1jw 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheryl Anderson I used to have feeders out for several dozen hummers but learned that they come back every year and become very dependent so it was so much work and I didn’t want to be away when they needed so when I moved I didn’t do it anymore.
