Kousei is the one fictional character I wish I could reach into his world and give him a big hug. The poor kid needs a hug after all the crap and tragedy he had to deal with. I love that anime. When it ended I was crying as if someone I knew personally had died.

Magikano runs a very similar course to Higurashi and Endless Summer from Haruhi Suzumiya. The Endless Summer arc saw Haruhi and company repeat the last two weeks of summer for hundreds of years. The main takeaway is that Nagato recalled everything since she was an alien, and Kyon was eventually able to break the time loop by having everyone do their summer homework.
In Higurashi's case it sounds like the small town of Hinamizawa was infected with a curse. Every summer when a certain festival took place people would begin dying mysteriously. And each arc had different methods of killing off the villagers. What's worse is I don't know if the characters have recollections of past arcs or if their memories are reset like with Magikano.
My heart ripped when you mentioned Fruits Basket. Tohru/Kyo is also pretty sad, but while it's fairly comical, it's still one of the saddest anime. But Hatori and Kana... just... WHYYYY D:
+NightcoreSisters Actually if you read the Manga of Fruits Basket Tohru and Kyo got together and had a daughter. Although the ending to the Anime Fruits Basket was actually more cute than sad.

I remember watching the last episode of Your Lie in April. I was trying so hard not to cry during Kaori letter, but when she just screamed she loved Kousei, I just began to bawl like a baby. I still cry every time I think of it
Molly and Nephrite from Sailor Moon, despite how brief their interaction was, ripped my heart out when Nephrite died after protecting Molly, leaving her bawling while the Sailor Scouts looked on. His turn to the side of good is what made it worse, perhaps showing that he and Molly could have worked out if it wasn't cut short so suddenly. To this day that scene is my go-to tear jerker if I need to cry. Same with Derrian leaving Serena at one point in the anime (though you already knew they were going to get back together, it still hurt).
Maximillion Pegasus (Crawford J. Pegasus) and Cecilia from Yu-Gi-Oh, as Pegasus lost her due to illness and was willing to steal the souls of others to try to bring her back. It was another brief mention, mainly to explain Pegasus' true intentions and his redemption.

I feel like Shinji and Asuka deserve an honorable mention. They had serious feelings for each other, but they were both too afraid to express them to each other...a fact that ultimately resulted in Shinji ending the world after his failure to save her life.

As tragic as their story is, seeing Mitsukake and Shouka get this kind of appreciation gives me life. Everyone turns to Nakago/Soi or Yui/Suboshi as the most tragic romances in the main FY series, but those two got nothing on the underappreciated healer and his zombie wife. Ouch. :(

He sacrificed his last time leap to save his friends but in the process, erased himself. Since he also gave back makoto's last time leap, she uses it to go back and save him as well. However, since now he only has one more time leap, he has to go back to the future and they could never be togather. Makoto never got to tell him how she really felt until it was too late
Reading this comment may spoil Code Geass. Lelouch and Shirley or Suzaku and Euphy should be more than honourable mentions. (Possibly not Suzaku and Euphy). First of all Suzaku and Euphy meet on the street clearly falling in love with each other and soon find out that one another is a Brittanian princess/soldier and Euphy makes Suzaku her knight. Them Lelouch fucks over the entire relationship by joking about killing all the Japanese and accidentally uses his Geass while going it and is then forced to murder his own sister and best friends crush. All before Suzaku or Euphy can admit they love each other and since she has no memories of doing it Suzaku tells her the event the whole thing took place at was a success so Euphy can feel like she finally did something and so Nina can continue to rape table-kun while looking at pictures of Euphy.
Now For Lelouch and Shirley.
Shirley clearly likes Lelouch from the start of the series and admires him from a distance. Then her father dies and she kisses Lelouch because her emotions are really unstable at the time and later Mou (the guy with the mind reading geass (not sure if that's how you spell his name)) tells her Lelouch's alter ego "Zero" murdered her father and she is torn between hating him or loving him and tries to shoot him not to avenge her father but so her pain of being torn between the to emotions will end. Lelouch decides to use his Geass on her so she forgets that point in her life, that he is Zero and her feelings for him. Then she falls in love with him again. Then right after they start legitimately dating Jeremiah uses his Geass canceler and it effects her and she remembers what happened to her father. She ultimately falls in love with him despite all that and is soon after killed by Lelouch's fake brother Rolo just because she knows Lelouch is Zero and dies in his arms telling him no matter how many times she is reincarnated that she will keep falling in love with him. Not tragic at all. Also I like it how they put a picture of the scene when Euphy is knighting Suzaku in so that it looks like he's killing himself. Anyone who hasn't seen it probably thought that
While he did eventually find happiness, Kenshin's short-lived relationship with Tomoe ranks up there with one of the most tragic relationships. Also Mawaru Penguindrum would've fit like a glove on this list.

+FoxNGames Truth be told, I barely watched the show, so I needed Shannens help scripting that part. The script she showed me was "shot in the head" so I went with it. Either it was her autocorrect changing her typing from heart to head or maybe a simple typo, I should have watched the tragedy first and the record. I didn't, I read he script as "shot in the head" and noticed my mistake as I was editing it.
Korosensei and Aguri was a beautiful romance... I almost cried at the scene when their spirits are sitting together at the school rooftop (I don't think, or at least I don't want to believe it was that girl's imagination).

On the surface not many would agree but looking on the inside, I definitely agree. Zeref and Mavis definitely have one of the most messed up tragic love endings ever.
Zeref taught her magic, they eventually fell in love much to Zeref’s fear of killing her. They can never have a happy life together, their own friggin son became a major antagonist only to die seeing the eyes of his own mother unbeknownst to her lack of knowledge on August being her son, sure, her kissing Zeref sets them both free of the curse, and will rejoice in the afterlife but because of Fairy Tail’s rather kinda sudden ending, all we can do now is interpret that August will be with them as a family. It’s just gut wrenching to see two people who loved each other only to now treat each other as enemies throughout the series.

I wasn't a fan of Kikyo at all, but her and Inuyasha deserved to at least be an honorable mention! I know Kagome is her reincarnation and all but still. There was even a two part episode called "Tragic Love Song of Destiny" that was about the sadness that was their relationship. I never comment on videos but I'm a little salty about this one.

I absolutely love how she refers to Akito as a female and with female pronouns If you've read the manga (I have read the later chapters) It is revealed Akito is actually a female, but at the time of the anime's release, I don't beleive this was an actual plot point in the manga so XD

william timonen Akito isn't represented as female because I think this was released before the manga pulled a plot twist, so not incorrect, just not as far as the manga got.

I'm not into shipping characters that much because I'm slightly picky about how romance is portrayed in stories; but, on almost every one of the few occasions I ship a couple and it seems like the series is bulilding up for them to be together, the couple is always tragically separated :(

Yeah, in the Manga, the Tsubasa Chronicles relationship between Syaoran and Sakura ends up a lot like your number one. except that neither them, nor the clones created to break their curse but take on lives of their own, ever get to be together because the loop plays into the main antagonists hands, with barely being able to save the original Sakura's life on each incarnation. Syaoran will continue to give everything for her, and she will never know how hard or how long he's struggled to save her life. I have a love/hate relationship with CLAMP because they do these kinds of things with a lot of their Manga. Clover, TSRC, X/1999 and it's "prequel" Tokyo Babylon, Chobits... and I'm not even half-way through the groups catalogue yet T.T

I'm no expert on tragic romances, but my sister agrees with you. She said "Doesn't fate ever get tired of deciding for Shouka to die painfully young (rather than let her grow much older first and die peacefully in natural cause with Mitsukake) regardless of different reincarnating timelines?"
And besides, in "Elfin Lied"... I wouldn't regarding Lucy X Kouta as being an tragic couple at all. After Lucy may have killed the four sadistic super-soldier bullies (three boys and one girl, all who then mentally tortured and controlled Lucy as dis-bodied holograms throughout the rest of the series to continue their murder spree through her, so the whole gang of the four could be one of the "Most Evil Villains/Creepiest Characters In Anime") to avenge the innocent defendless puppy, but that's no excuse for her to later murder Kouta's family! If she really killed Kouta's sister and father for sheer pleasure of it...why didn't Kouta himself bother to swore vengeance against her in order to avenge his family like Bruce Wayne did against Jack Napier to avenge his parents?
Would make more sense for the romance between Lucy and Kouta as genuinely tragic, if only the bullies from the orphanage are actually--like I said--super soldiers of the deceiving Matrix/Terminator robotic kind, born as remorseless soulless monsters who never grow old (unlike Lucy, even though she killed them as a child, they can never be stopped years after that) while always enjoying randomly killing all organic life-forms (only outside of the evil mad science company) they see nearby in general, no different the level-E vampires from "Vampire Knight", and they're unfeeling killing machines who where in fact made by the same company that created a race of organic-based mutants (which Lucy originated from, the mutants were made only to kill normal humans), and they're also one of the company's efficient tools used to test the mutants' abilities, they're truly are Lucy's literal psychopathic personality and of course they themselves also deserved to have the most satisfying death not once but twice. When Kouta now older (17 or 20 year old) he swore revenge against the very same four bullies (while still the form of children exactly like both he and Lucy remembers them) who somehow nearly regain their solid physical form due of the killing spree upon mostly innocent bystanders through Lucy's telekinesis (whereas Lucy herself was killing her captors, tormentors and pursuers through her own will)...while Lucy was fighting the other mutants sent to capture her by the evil company, Kouta was fighting the newly revived cyborg bullies in self-defense with only a small pool water and torn electrical wires nearby. The last time Lucy defeated them by butchered their bodies with her telekinesis would automatically allowing them to take control f her body and manifested themselves as her psychopathic personality infiltrated her mind...but this time Kouta defeated them by electrocuting both their bodies and minds ultimately and permanently destroying them in the process via finally freeing Lucy from their wicked influence.Those four bullies prooved that they are all nothing but the equivalent of those twisted abominations straight from "The Terminator", "The Children Of The Corn", "The Matrix" and "The Children Of The Damned".

I know I posted too late for anyone to read this, but Yoite and Miharu (Nabari no Ou) is definitely #1 for me (it legit sucks that so many people don't know about it). It was more bittersweet than downright tragic, but still...
Yoite's days were numbered already. Thanks to a power he used, his body was destined to rapidly deteriorate, and he would turn to dust once he finally died. He chose to learn this power specifically because it would turn his body to dust; he had just been rescued from an extremely abusive and neglectful household and hated his existence when he was offered the chance to learn that power. Since then, Yoite (tried to) close himself off emotionally, and actively avoided peoples' kindness to avoid having any positive memories that would make him regret his choice to disappear.
Miharu and Yoite start off as enemies, and initially just work together because Miharu was blackmailed into granting Yoite's only wish, which was to erase any trace of Yoite's existence (memories and all). But they gradually grow closer despite not wanting to admit it, until Yoite was nearly killed in a fight and Miharu realized he really didn't want Yoite to die. After that, they had practically grown attached to each other, and felt they could only fully trust each other, to the point where Yoite, barely able to walk or fight anymore because of his deteriorating body, finally admitted to Miharu that he initially lied about the blackmail, and told Miharu to leave him behind, because he was being slowed down, but neither of them really wanted to leave the others' side at that point, even if it meant they'd both be in danger. By the end, all they wanted was to be with each other in peace. By the time everything was over and they were able to be together, Miharu had come to accept that Yoite would die at any moment, and Yoite had decided he was happy to have met Miharu, and didn't want to be forgotten by him or his guardian and other friends. They spent as much time as they could together, and Yoite learned to knit, so he began making a scarf for Miharu that would match the one Yoite received earlier in the story.
Eventually, Yoite and Miharu are sitting down outside and talking one day, waiting for their friends to come over, and Miharu decides to go inside and get lemonade for both of them. While Miharu is inside, Yoite continued knitting for a little while longer, then sat back, smiled, and closed his eyes right before his body completely disintegrated, leaving behind nothing but his chair, his clothes, and Miharu's unfinished scarf. Miharu arrived with their drinks right in time to see the remnants of Yoite's body get blown away by the breeze, and blankly picked up the scarf Yoite was working on.
Shit, I was crying just typing this ridiculous comment. Those two were some of the best "star crossed lovers" that I've ever seen. I seriously recommend both the anime and the manga to anyone and everyone, so as long as they don't mind watching something with (very) mild yaoi undertones. (Even calling it yaoi is something of a stretch, because Yoite is biologically intersex and doesn't personally identify as male or female.) The manga and the anime both have Yoite die in very different ways, but they're both extremely bittersweet.

aw c'mon Sakura and Syaoran were only in honorable mentions? Like Sakura lost all of her memories and so Syaoran starts a journey to find her memories but since he must traverse through dimensions he has to give up that which is most important to him for the means to travel. What is most important to him is Sakura and thus he has to give up her memories of him. So whenever she regains memories there are some which she seems to be talking to nothing but those are all the memories she has with Syaoran. Though the that is merely a prelude to the Tokyo Revelations arc where it is revealed that Syaoran is a clone with a soul that isn't his and than the seal binding the soul to him disappears. After that his only purpose is to collect the memories. A few arcs after that he reappears and fights with the real Syaoran for a memory feather and at the end both Syaorans are going to attack each other with their swords and then Sakura materializes in between them and she begins to turn into cherry blossoms and she tells real Syaoran that she is also a clone and with her final breath she whispers in clone Syaorans ear that she loves him before completely disappearing.
Personally, I'm ok with LelouchxShirley and SuzakuxEuphemia being honourable mentions, but I'd have liked them to at least have been somewhere in the bottom 5. Both of those relationships were cute, and met with bloody ends for both couples.

But when you find out about Meliodas’ and Elizabeth’s curses, you’ll be putting them in the number one slot, I guarantee.
I mean, at least Haruo and Ayumi don’t have to suffer with the memories of each reset timeline, knowing that they can’t change anything. Meliodas has to watch Elizabeth DIE RIGHT IN FRONT IF HIM 107 TIMES. Knowing that there was absolutely NOTHING he could do to save her, despite his immense powers. And having to relive their meeting, relationship, and her DEATH for over 3000 years, each time knowing that she won’t remember him, that she’ll fall in love with him again, and then DIE. And if she ever gets her previous lives’ memories back? That sets of an agonizing day counter until something unavoidably kills her. She gets THREE DAYS of remembering him, and then she DIES.
I don’t think there’s much of anything more tragic than that.

For all the people complaining about Clannad not being on the list, Clannad undid its own tragic ending through sheer bullshit and insulting its viewers' intelligence. It's not a tragic romance when the end result is ultimately happy, especially for ridiculous reasons.
Got to pay attention in Clannad back in ep 7 I believe of season 1 when they spoke about that wish or whatever it was called. Clannad built up on its story never losing its point from season 1. It was tragic from the very beginning.

I think the reason this messed me up a lot on the inside was cuz whether in sub or dub, the fact that a child had to deliver the finishing blow to someone he loved whether romantically or as an exceedingly close friend that nearly turned into something more in the dub, I admit earlier seeing that part all those years ago, I could barely pull myself back together after going through all of that.
That moment where you want to see Takane Enemoto and Haruka Kokonose from Mekakucity Actor in the honorable mentions but you forget about Azami and Tsukihiko. My heart was crushed when I was reminded.

I would've added Guts and Casca from Berserk on there. Even though at first they never got along and Casca fell for Griffith, but eventually after Guts returned to what was left of The Band of the Hawk they started falling for each other until things went to hell. Literally! Guts and Casca were the only ones that survived that sacrifice so that Griffith could become a demon and Guts was forced to watch him rape Casca while he cut his own arm off and his right eye was gouged out. After all of that, Guts remembered what happened and Casca had amnesia
