- Bought this laptop from eBuyer and noticed there aren't any guides showing you how to replace the HDD/SSD; so here you go!

I have this laptop. Let me say it first - Thank you so much for the video, it felt like you were holding my hand. I was really scared of cracking the keyboard area. I am not too experienced with computer/laptop internals, I only understood the USB ports, HDD drive, fan, and RAM sticks. This was also the first time I have EVER opened up a computer. This is the only laptop I have, so I was really afraid of breaking it. The scariest part was definitely where I had to pry off the cover when it got stuck on the VGA port. Thank you so much for the only video on TH-cam that shows a tutorial for opening this specific model. I ended up upgrading to a 300 GB SSD, and added a DDR3 8 GB ram stick. Thanks a lot!

Very, very helpful and thank you. I am so used to being able to take off the standard small cover for the RAM modules for an upgrade but the design on this model presented an apparent obstacle to easy upgrades. Your video made it look straightforward and the upgrade is complete with no cracks in the plastic. Phew! Thanks again.
lifesaver. They removed the cd drive in the new version of the 250 G5. I had bought 3 but one didn't have the drive so I stripped the drive out and swapped them about as win 7 wouldn't install using ISO or usb to cd drive. Saved me 3 Hours tedious work. cheers.
Thanks heaps man. I couldn't get the base unclipped near the hinge area and found your video. Turns out the rubber feet were hiding a screw on each side thanks to your video!

Thanks for making this tutorial, I didn't know about the sticker part so after I removed them and unscrewed the screws, everything else afterward went smoothly, don't know if I would figure it out myself if not for the video lol, so thank you a lot! ^^

Start from the back first and unclick the battery area of the back panel by pulling up as shown in the video

Thanks for the video. I hate it when laptops have no external access to the replaceable components. You'd think memory and hard disk would be essential to have, at the very least.
Please check page 40 from "HP 250 G4 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide".
This is the correct motion for opening the bottom cover, that is how I also managed to open it:
"START PRYING AT THE FRONT of the computer and work around to the back to separate the bottom cover from computer (1)."
By opening from the back (like in this video) you have a big chance to damage those clips from the middle.

Thanks for the straightforward video. Between this video and +Gumball3000.ro2 's suggestion to refer to the "HP 250 G4 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide", it was a snap to disassemble.
The best advice I can offer to anyone is to take it slow, and don't force anything. I used an old credit card to slide along the seam once I got the first couple of plastic latches popped apart. That seemed to work really well for me.

Nice video today I'm replacing my HDD of my 250g4 to WD elements SSD.
So, the thing is I clean installed recently after April creative update. And the problem starts too slow and driver incompatible with display too. Then I got recovery CD from HP unfortunately before even trying hard disc failed (😔I shouldn't have experimented too much with Ubuntu) Ubuntu worked well after changing os win to Ubu or Ubu to win too many times hard disc slowed down..
😌Now I ordered SSD will update after installing..

How is the performance after upgrade? Do you recomend to add minimum 4gb ram and ssd drive?
ssd will be allways faster, adding ram is still good too.

geez, what a pain in the ass, i just got one of these 250's and a 480GB SSD for it, dells and lenovos are easier to do. at least i know i gotta do a lots of screws and pull the DVD out.
ty so much for this!! Couldn't find ANYTHING, but this is the EXACT bottom of my Model x007ds- However, when i try to remove the DVD, there is a cable attached??!! AND i can't see anyway to "release it"... Haven't seen a cable (ribbon) on ANY other CD Drives... Any ideas?! Ty!!

what a pain in the backside... I just bought one and was so happy to find one that didn't had 32gb of flash, but a real hdd. And now that >.< I knew I shouldn't have bought hp. (Also as usual their cooling solution is scrap)

It's more likely an msata, like m.2 but still sata some have additional slots or you'll find they've removed the bluetooth/wifi board

I have a question, I have been a clean Windows 10 installation from another computer (for time and productivity reasons). But when I change to SSD a black screen said to me "Hard Drive OS Boot don't found".

As long as you don't break any wires or bits you'll be fine just be careful and take it slow

did you open it to see ? and there's a lot of different version so it's possible that you have a 1slot ram version

Hi. Couple of questions. First, Would doing this void the warranty? Would you recommend this laptop, or is there a better option for around the same money? And also, what is the screen like, I have seen a lot of people saying 1366*768 isn't great?
+Samaras97 It shouldn't do, as a hard disk is typically a consumer serviceable part - but you'd need to check with HP or your retailer to be 100%. For the money (especially as this laptop is currently on offer in the Black Friday deals); it offers great performance for it's price point. The screen seemed pretty good again in this regard, by no means groundbreaking but still fairly decent.

Any standard SATA 2.5” drive will fit, regardless of brand :)
As for RAM, the best website to check would be Crucial - as they’ll guarantee full compatibility!

Great video - I have the HP 250 i5 128GB SSD and 4 GB RAM. Is it possible to expand the SSD memory and the RAM? Based on this video the physical change for 128 GB SSD to a larger SSD drive should be possible, but if I did that would I face additional problems/hurdles to jump once I turned the laptop back on i.e. the OS/ system side of it vs. the physical change? And, I have windows 10 preinstalled, would I lose this? Thanks

The windows has license on the motherboard so you should not worry,once you install the windows skip the part where you introduce the key and afterwards it will be taken by the software.about ram ypu should verify if it has 2 slots and not just one and what type of ram is inside to make sure you have the same type

Is the back cover hard to get off?
It's pretty tough, but once you find the right points and apply enough pressure it will unclip and come apart fairly easily!
+Spudgun Please can you make a close up video uncliping these clips, it will be very usefull. I find difficult to do it, and you unclip them very fast in your video. Thank u in advance :)

It's fully possible. You'll need an adapter though.

+Tinh Apple Basically what Paul has said. Hard disks are mechanical; so as such the internals suffer from general wear and tear and eventually bite the dust. SSDs contain no moving parts, therefore have much greater longevity. Not to mention the data read/writes are substantially quicker; it can give an older machine an entirely new lease of life!

It is a laptop,that doesn't work pretty well,build a pc with a pentium 4 and there you can replace whatever ypu please
For laptops you can replace 3 things
Storage,ram,wifi card

I put up 4gb ddr3 beside 8gb ddr stick but my linux mint x64 sees only 8gb? Any help?
i don't know what is linux mint but the hp 250 g4 can only use 8gb ram even if the cpu can support 16gb .

i want to upgrade my hp 250 g4 laptop too....how did the optical drive slide out so easy? i just bought a ssd/odd adapter to replace the dvd rw with a ssd while keeping the hdd for more storage. also, i see 2 slots for ram memory in this video, but just to double check, there are 2 slots for the 250 g4 laptop, wright? can i fit another normal ddr3 4gb 1600mhz in there? thanks!
That's right, there are two RAM slots. Also, the optical drive is held in by one screw, simply remove this and it will pop out easily. Hope this helps!

After you swapped the original hard drive for an SSD, were you able to do a straight forward fresh install of windows 10 or did you have to mess around with recovery dvds or recovery partitions copied from the original drive? Do HP give you a proper windows product key ?
I will answer this myself. I didn't need to use the recovery dvds or the recover partition from the original hard drive. I also found out that Windows 10 doesn’t use a typed in product key as your product key is now stored in the BIOS. So I just downloaded a windows 10 iso, burned it to a dvd and did a fresh install of windows 10. So job done, I now have windows 10 installed on my Samsung Evo 250gb SSD and even better all of the HP bloatware is gone.

Can you upgrade the WIFI card in this laptop?
I just tried to do that today with a dual band Intel 7260NGW M.2 and my machine would not recognize the card, I pre-installed all the drivers for the Intel card as well. Good luck please let me know if you ever figured it out.

no, this is a laptop. Laptops don't have external PCI slots. The laptops you see that do have external GPUs use a thunderbolt connection.
+DG2assassin nope, wrong. I just bought the slot for the gpu. I removed the wireless lan from my laptop and connect the hdmi to pci e connecter to my laptop and installed the drivers. It worked perfectly fine

+ledsliver From memory, it's under Boot options and is set to AHCI mode by default. Legacy is also available.
Works also for HP 255 g4 however always follow the instructions. HP does not offer a **** support ... this manual can be useuful even if not as a video. h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04653881
This video shows that if we (doesn't show that we need to take care of good choice of items we buy for upgrade and that they have to be compatible .. especially RAM) buy a computer online at low price we can then speed it up easily for a few bucks .. and make it last longer plus ... keep it clean and it will be a good working hardware.

Where the battery goes in, you'll see three black plastic clips underneath. If you release those with a flat-bladed screwdriver it becomes a lot easier. Be careful not to damage them though.
What a pain in the ass. I've replaced hundreds of hard drives and RAM sticks in laptops and this laptop is by far the most inconvenient that I've encountered.
