  • APPROACH WITH CARE AND CAUTION. Don't break your computer! And don't blame me if you do. If in doubt, go to a professional.
    How to open up and replace or upgrade the hard disk on a HP 250 G5 Laptop computer.
    The procedure takes at least 12 minutes, probably longer if you are new to opening up computers. This video shows you how to remove the lower case/underside cover to access the hard disk, motherboard, RAM, wireless card and bios battery..

    Thank you. This helped me to upgrade my $10 HP255 G5 to an SSD drive. Now it boots in 6 seconds. Not bad. On my 255 G5 the two inner battery screws are short and the rest are long. Other than that and the fact the HDD has pins not screws the video helped me upgrade in 10 minutes.

    Got all the screws out but now I'm stuck. In the video, you're unclipping the back panel by sliding a credit card in between and gently prying. That looks perfect. However with mine there is no gap whatsoever between the back panel and top/palmrest. Forget about sliding a credit card in - I can't even get a razor blade in between those two parts. It's as though it's one solid piece. If I feel where the gap/joint should be with my thumb nail I can indeed feel that there is a slight joint/junction there but not one that ANYTHING could ever possibly get into without breaking or damaging the plastic of the parts. It's as though there are two pieces connected together - but it's like they've been glued or something. There seems to be no actual gap between them that a credit card, a razor blade, a knife, or any other instrument could conceivably slide (or push) into. Any ideas or suggestions?? Any trick or advice that anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated as the hard drive has died and I desperately need to replace it. Thanks

    on that model can you add more ram?

    • @freename
      @freename  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes.. on my one at 5:08 you can see there are two RAM slots next to the hard drive (closer to the camera).. on my model only one of the RAM slots has RAM in it.. so you should be able to add a stick - or remove the existing RAM and install two higher capacity upgraded sticks.

      You can in some computers but some also don't like using the DVD to SATA converters. (e.g. some Lenovo laptops definitely don't work with them. They work but you can't boot from them - so your main drive still needs to be in the normal SATA port.).
      Buy one and test but make sure you buy it from somewhere you can send it back if it doesn't work?

      Yep, that's one of the brands and models I've used without problem. As with any drive, back up your important data! Anything (even hard disks) can go wrong without notice. SSDs are more difficult to recover data from than hard disks too.

      A screwdriver from an ancient screwdriver set I bought at a petrol station (Gas station for the USA people) about 15 years ago. 4mm width.

    • @freename
      @freename  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnh8932 I use a computer.. or a USB to SATA cable and clone the drive with the new one plugged in via USB before you remove the old drive.
      Or using the Macrium boot USB if you've already put the new drive into the computer and have the old drive on the USB to SATA adaptor.
      Make sure you are copying the correct way! Don't accidentally copy the new blank drive over the top of the one with all your data on!
