  • made from off the shelf parts (this would normally use a brake drum but I didn't have one so i had to make a pan. a brake drum would be better, then make a small table around it! the parts to make the tuyere only cost around $35

    Use foundation block as a table and place the pan on the top. This worked GREAT with the Semi Truck brake drum and the foundation block hole openings made a great route for the Fan blower pipe. The heat is so intense that FOLDING Iron was easier than folding steel. Iron rebar was folded into itself some 36 times with this forge method...
    THANK YOU Modern Blacksmith for the knowledge...and the beer tips. Keep it
    pounding!!!

    I built my charcoal forge for 25 bucks, and spent the rest of the money I had set aside for it to make the bellows. Do it the Japanese style; fire bricks and charcoal. Stupid simple.

    regarding the fan. I have found that a fan from an old microwave works amazingly well for this application. they have good mounting points are enclosed to avoid accidental contact with fingers and I have gotten quite a few for nothing just haul the microwave away.

    You are my HERO!!! I don't know if it's your demeanor or the beer. I am going to make that brake drum forge. I have some non-magnetic steel (Titanium Nickel Steel alloy of some kind) that I want to temper out for a blade, and the fire pit can't even get it cherry. The stock eats cut off wheels. I think hot cut is my only option other than the plasma cutter, and that's just no fun. Thanks for the tips. Oh yeah.... Eye protection, it's not just a fashion statement.

    Another advantage to using hardwood lump chafcoal. When finished, douse the fire out with water. Let the charcoal dry and it can be reused unlike brickettes.

    I'm going to go into blacksmithing, I have always had a fascination with it. I think Ihave to say atm w/o experience the most exciting prospect is I can make useful things...if I am wood working or practicing bush craft and find I could use or need a tool I do not have...hell I can MAKE it. Tyvm for these videos, hopefully I will have my own little forge going some time...only other things will be the tools an anvil will have to be done with some piece from the rail road but it IS a start!

    For 16 dollars, you can buy a 92mm tornado high air flow fan designed for server rack cooling. They have a TINY foot print and 120 CFM, or a 120mm delta fan, for a larger footprint and 240 cfm. Requires a 12v power supply, which is easy with an adapter to mains or from a car battery. Just something that would be cheaper and more efficient than a ventilation fan.

    • @andreat8440
      @andreat8440 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Richard Smith Ah! Computer fans! I hadn't thought of that for this application. Brilliant. That would also mean that you could use an old computer power supply to provide a 12V source (or, as you had said, a car or deep cycle RV/marine battery). Thanks.
      I wish I had a shop here to set up a forge (as well as my welding equipment (which is all buried in storage) but, alas, that isn't an option in my present location.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrea T Use server grade fans, not consumer grade desktop fans, they are not up to the strain, and server grade fans favor cfm at the cost of noise, they are very loud, so those would be ideal for this purpose too, where CFM and longevity are much more important than noise output.

    Dan, keep your peepers open for free treadmills (or cheap), a lot of them have a 1 horse motor (DC). Ya just pull the motor and speed control (be sure to pull the transformer too).
    Then ya got yourself a high torque variable speed setup for a drill press, sander, grinder, etc.

    Wouldn't smaller holes with a rheostat in the line to vary the fan output work better?
    I built a brake drum forge with a 3/16" plate welded to the hole in the brake drum. Drilled small holes in the plate and used an old hair dryer with an in-line rheostat for adjusting the air flow. Insert the end of the hair dryer into the end of the air inlet pipe and it worked really well!

    If you want to remove the galvanized layer just buy a quart bottle of muriatic acid, put it in a plastic container and drop in the galvanized part.
    Do it outside and do NOT breathe the fumes.
    Be ready with a box of baking soda and a water hose.

  • @Eledaraumar
    @Eledaraumar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jdouglasfisher I disagree, the entry level kit should be only the pan, tubes for the legs to slide into, and the hole cut for the tuyere. No blower or piping included; those parts would just add cost to shipping. Anyone could go to their hardware store and get the parts to attach. Keep the cost low for new people.

    Or a woman, but I guess that slipped your mind. Nevertheless, thanks for the forge hack. This is cool, but I woodwork and don't have a plasma cutter, which would be a limiting factor if I didn't want to do the drum. Maybe a nibbler attachment? Now the project is $70. Still, sturdier than other tuts on youtube.

      My first brake drum forge didn't even have a pan. Just the drum. I made a lot of pretty neat stuff with it before I ever did one with the pan surrounding the drum. I will admit that having the pan surrounding the drum makes things easier and more functional, though. I just mention that with just the drum and legs bolted to it will give you a basic unit that will work until you decide you want to keep doing it or until you can afford better!
