    This is one of my all time favorite Metallica tracks!!! Not only is it full of seamless transitions and absolutely amazing guitar solos but I love how they incorporate the sound of hoof beats into the guitar riffs and in some places the drum beats. They sonically take you for a ride along with the four horsemen!!! Genius at its best!!!

    This track was originally written by Dave Mustaine and titled 'Mechanix'... but the lyrics were about a gas station employee 'servicing' rich honeyz at his workplace 😂 After Dave Mustaine was fired, he eventually recorded 'Mechanix' w/ Megadeth in 1985 for the band's debut album "Killing is my business... and business is good!"... 2 years after Metallica released their debut album "Kill 'em all" in 1983.
    From what I gathered, Metallica performed the song as 'Mechanix' for a year... then, when they left for NYC to record their first album, they reworked the song - James Hetfield wrote new lyrics as 'The Four Horsemen' (heavily influenced by Judas Priest) and added some more parts w/ Lars Ulrich... Cliff Burton (bass) joining Metallica in 1983, helped for sure... and Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) had to play Dave Mustaine's leads on the record.
    Metallica's demos ("No life til leather" for example) were very raw, and they were recorded w/ Dave Mustaine (lead guitar) and Ron McGovney (bass) in 1982... but fans loved those recordings. When they went to NYC in 1983, Cliff Burton (bass) had joined and that improved the band considerably... and Dave Mustaine was fired; Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) was brought in to play all of Dave Mustaine's leads on "Kill 'em all" (It was originally titled "Metal up your a++"... but distributors refused to release it)... They used the NY studio where Manowar had recorded the album 'Into glory ride' in '83... and the album was a huge sonic improvement from their demos. It was, by far, the best album from the first wave of thrash metal bands, which included Anthrax, Slayer, Exodus, Voivod, Exciter, Anvil, etc.
    When Metallica went to tour Europe in 1984, they were no better off financially... but had written new songs for a 2nd album. Their label Megaforce Records poured everything they had into "Kill 'em all" and had nothing left to show for the next album... So, Metallica signed w/ European label Music for Nations in '84 and they funded recording in Denmark for 'Ride the Lightning'... Metallica grumbled that the track 'Escape' was written to placate the label for a marketable single and they refused to play it live for years...
    Music for Nations released 'Ride the Lightning' (and the 'Creepind death' EP) in Europe, while Megaforce Records released it in the US... In early 1985, major label Elektra Records in America signed Metallica and re-released 'Ride the Lightning' and it made the top 200 chart.
    Metallica toured relentlessly in 1985 and returned to Denmark to record 3rd album 'Master of Puppets' w/ a bigger budget this time... and the sound was much better production-wise as a result and it became Metallica's first gold album in the US as they opened for Ozzy Osbourne on tour in 1986... Metallica lost bassist Cliff Burton on tour in Europe in a tour bus accident... They resumed touring late in '86 w/ Jason Newsted (bass) joining and 'Master of Puppets' sold platinum by 1987.
    Meanwhile, Megadeth released their debut "Killing is my business..." in 1985 but Dave Mustaine and his bandmates were struggling w/ drug addiction and faced money problems... so, the record was very sonically raw. But Megadeth was quickly signed by major label Capitol Records and had a better recording budget for the 2nd album "Peace sells, but who's buyin'?" in 1986... which eventually sold gold in America but was behind Metallica in sales.

    To your questions about James Hetfield's voice from Kill 'em all to Ride the Lightning. James took some vocal lessons to learn how to sing his signature distortion without damaging his vocal cords after Kill 'em all. By the time they released Master of Puppets you can hear significant improvement in his vocal sustain and quality, without giving up his natural sound.

    • @carlgibson285
      @carlgibson285 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I always thought that James didn't take any vocal lessons until it came to recording either Justice or the Black album, which is when the band finally stopped looking for a new vocalist and James accepted that he would always be the band's singer.

    • @Nissardpertugiu
      @Nissardpertugiu 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its not just that, its natural progression and experimentation.
      Also James was 19 on KEA.
      By Master he had 22.
      Your voice, especially as baritone change a lot more biologically too than you might think even if you hit the same notes.
      But the texture would change.
      Your voice really developp around mid 20's into your early 30's.
      Ride the lightning a had some of the same high stuff than KEA too.
      On title track ...
      But its gaining body.
      The big transition was taking place after Cliff death.
      Not only it was the natural expansion as support placement of finding where he wanted, and biological, but its prooved sometimes a big trauma can change voice complexion.
      Cliff passing was one.
      And on the tour with Jason already his voice became thicker and he added more grunt to it.
      Canada 1986, its by little hints , then 1987 was really the period, even on Garage days, he hits all the Diamond Head stuff but its thicker, and some of his notes have exactly the tone of Justice and BA already.
      Small hours, The Wait, Green Hell...
      James was 24 in 1987.
      The goterborg show is that too.
      But James had in 1987-1988 some vocal styles on this tour that went more extreme than thrash too on shierk and grunt .

    Oooh man cheers from Sweden i used to listen to this album until my LP record player gave up. I grew up in rural sweden born 1981 and we were so engulfed in USA rap Icecube etc , heavy metal and british pop/heavy metal. This album and song is still my fav. Maybe of the old memories it brings up. I remeber i recorded old Ep record recorded live from the ep to a caseette player and it entailed breadfan song and other insanely gtood live songs you seldom hear. The thing is when listening to the casette it sounded like Metallica was drunk so for a few years i went thinking i had a special live show were they played drunk sound was heavier and was awesome however same speed lol. Two artists I really like are Paul Greco (he's my cousin), an abstract artist from Yonkers, New York and Vincent Castiglia. Mr. Castiglia uses blood to paint with. His own unless he's commissioned to do a piece, then he will use that person's blood. For example he painted a guitar for Gary Holt, who played with Slayer and Exodus. You should Google him to see his style. Very impressive! I purchased a copy of one of his pieces. He gave me an extra because it took him longer than planned to mail it to me. He also signed both pictures! Very cool dude!! I got both pictures custom framed...😊

    about the album artwork compared to load & reload:
    1. early 80s were much different, much more conservative times then the early 90s I think
    2. As far as I know there was not too much controversy with this album cover. However, originally they wanted to call the album "Metal up your ass", with a toilet seat on the cover out of which comes a hand holding a knife. This was a little too much for the record company, and they denied it. After the meeting, reportedly Cliff Burton was so angry about that, he said "Just kill those f***ers. Kill 'em all", and thats how the album got its name.

    Do you know about the album that Metallica made after "Reaload" ? This double album was named "Garage Inc." and on it they recorded a bunch of cover songs by the bands they loved when they were kids, like Black Sabbath, Diamondhead, Misfits, Motorhead... as well songs by Nick Cave and even Queen :) Of course my favorite cover is "Sabbra Cadabra" by Black Sabbath, though every cover is great. Fun Fact: Dave Mustaine of Megadeth claims credit for the title. A group called Gamma (led by Ronnie Montrose) has a song called "Four Horsemen" that Mustaine played in his pre-Metallica band, Panic. He would refer to Metallica as "The Four Horsemen" and suggested they cover the Gamma song. The band never did the cover, but they did appropriate the title.

      Its the music from The Mechanix he claimed. It's on No Life til Leather. Metallica changed the lyrics and the name, and some of the music. When Dave left. He's still credited for writing on Kill Em All. He released Mechanix on Killing is My Business.

    • @Venture_Ms
      @Venture_Ms 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@91GT347 He isn't wrong,the information is just a little bit confusing. Let's go step by step
      - Dave already wrote mechanix before joining metallica
      - When he was in metallica he suggested that they played a cover of the song four horseman by gamma. wich so far has nothing to do with mechanix. I'ts just a suggestion to play a cover song since in the early days,that's what they were mostly doing.(like all other early metal bands)
      - After Dave left, James decided to change the lyrics and the title because the lyrics were too silly.(IMO they are quite funny).
      - Dave claims that the idea of the title being the four horseman comes from the time he suggested playing that cover.
      Makes sense,but claiming credit is stupid,but he never actually claimed anything.He just said that this is probably how the idea of "The four horseman" got to James.
      I'm practing my english writing..appreciate some feedback :)

    Metallica's three bassists have each had such different musical personalities it's hard to compare them. They each brought something valuable to the band. Cliff had his guitarist-like approach to the instrument and knowledge of classical music composition that was so important to Metallica's early identity. It's what set them apart from other early thrash bands. Jason brought seemingly limitless energy and aggression to their sound especially live. In my opinion Metallica's peak period as a live band was when Jason was with them. Rob brings groove and precision. He's undoubtedly the most well studied and professional musician they've ever had on bass. Dude can play absolutely anything which is a hell of a skill to bring to a band that has a 40 year catalog with a lot of variety in it.

    Robert Trujillo is a great bassist, and he fits in very well with Metallica, as did Jason Newsted, BUT the GOAT will always be Cliff Burton (RIP) - the stuff he did with that bass was revolutionary! Seriously, on so many tracks, there's times you think it's guitar, but it's Cliff on bass. He was the most 'musically' trained & visionary musician in the group. That would be something.

    Ambiguity. That's the main difference in images between "Kill 'em All" & the "Load" album covers.
    But Metallica is obviously "The Rock" because... FINALLY... The Trash Talkers have reacted to one of my suggestions from years ago!
    One of my all time favorite Metallica songs (for a few reasons).
    1. Dave Mustaine licks
    2. Kirk's bridge is 🔥
    3. Cliff effing Burton!
    4. I love the syncopation in the song! It's raw, driving, chuggy & heavy. When it lightens; it's like the cool down after a workout, but then you have to go hit the weights again. I love it!
    Thank you! 🤘

    I remember a family friend asking me one afternoon during a visit by he and his family, "How do you pronounce m-a-c?" "Mac," I replied. 'And how do you pronounce h-i-n-e-s?" he continued. "Hines", I said, pronouncing it like our family name. "Now put them together: how do pronounce m-a-c-h-i-n-e-s?" he asked. I replied with the two parts fused and pronouncing each part as before. "No, he said, think about it. Oopsy, I thought, and realized it was machines. Lick whatever you like, and maybe it'll lick back. 😏
    Van Gogh was several hundred years after the Renaissance. Different schools, styles altogether. Love 'em both.

    Good morning gents.... wow this is a song I have a permanent flashback memory burned into my brain about. It was a cast party I was attending in high school and we had just finished a run of some show... I forget what it was..... but a buddy and myself had just purchased Kill Them All. This is 1986 I want to say and we shined going to the cast party all together in favor of just sitting in his car for hours running that album over and over and over again and especially Bean baffled at how close The Four Horsemen was to another favorite of ours... that's being Megadeth's song titled "mechanix"...

    • @catmanduu66
      @catmanduu66 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It sounds like Mechanix because it is that song. Dave wrote that song, at least the music, for Metallica and when he left they just changed the lyrics.

Dave Mustaine co-wrote it with Metallica and took it with him after they kicked him out. It's a lot faster with different lyrics. Also doesn't have the Sweet Home Alabama solo section.

    Metallica really were hitting hard with this album,it turned a lot of metal fans into thrash heads, that's just how influential they were. Then they disappeared as soon as they came out with the Black Album, it was a great album, don't get me wrong, but it and the rest that followed just don't do it for me. Trujillo is not even close...take that back. Haha.

    So, you asked about Cliff Burton or Robert Trujillo.. no doubt Cliff was amazing! My opinion is, without his tragic death, Metallica wouldn't be the worlds greatest metal band. I don't think we'd have songs like nothing else matters, one, the unforgiven saga, outlaw torn.. I think it took his loss to project the others to open new doors. Trujillo is always my favorite bc I'm a Suicidal and infectious grooves die hard. Pledged my allegiance a long time ago. Newsted contributed a lot too and he deserves the credit. But I think the band would be very different from what we know now if Cliff was alive
