@@deanmadden123 If you read the book of revelation it's a little unclear on the actual names of the four horsemen. Especially depending on the translation. It actually only names Death. Not only that, MetallicA as a group, Dave Mustane included, wrote these songs in their late teens & early twenty's. They all are & were (RIP Cliff) musical prodigies
i have been ignorant. when i first started following you reactions i felt like you, brad, was an emotionless dongle. but i have come to realize you just got poker face. and your input is amazingly insightful.
Pestilence would be swarms of locusts/plant eating bugs “coming out of nowhere” and eating all the crops and oxygen producing plants. This song is about the biblical apocalypse. And if you want Metallica’s vocals to grow on you check out something from the S&M show in 99. Preferably “Bleeding Me” or “Hero Of the Day” for a much different (but just as badass & awesome) side of Metallica.
Pestilence means plague, disease, or sickness. You might be confused because of the common idiom "Plagues of Locusts", as in being plagued by swarming locusts. But pestilence itself means disease.
That 'car peeling out' sound that put you's off...that was the best bass player to ever walk the planet, Mr Cliff Burton making that sound on his bass guitar. He did things with a bass that to this day still can't be topped, tho I do believe you have to be an accomplished bass player to even understand half of what he is doing. One thing for sure there will never be another Cliff Burton, R.I.P.
I agree that Cliff is one of the best bass players ever. He was one of the major influences that made me want to play the bass. However, that is not Cliff's bass with distortion and wah during the part you're talking about, it's the lead guitar. I know because I've played this song many times in a Metallica tribute band. And yes, there will never be another Cliff Burton. He was one of a kind.
Loving your channel and weekly live streams! You're way more entertaining than most stuff on TV. You just reacted to what might be my favorite Metallica song so thank you. Hard to choose from so many killer tracks. One gem you haven't done yet (just checked!) is 'Orion', which is an instrumental and an all-time fan favorite.
A lot of metal uses biblical and religious literature. The four horsemen of the apocalypse from the book of revelation, the 4 riders appear on the earth to bring about the "end times". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse There are varying interpretations of the names of the riders, in the song Metallica chose: Rider 1: Time, Taking it's toll on you... Rider 2: Famine (Hunger) Rider 3: Pestilence (Means Plague or Sickness) Rider 4: Death (X) Also just for fun, Metallica has often referred to themselves as the 4 horsemen (at least in the early days), or been referred to by fans/media.
Sept 2-3 1983... seeing Metallica for the first time at the Keystone Berkley, and The Stone San Francisco.... opened with Hit the Lights, and then followed with The Four Horseman. wow... good times!!! Their energy blew my mind.
Man, Lex looks so happy when she's listening to Metallica. I never really noticed before Lex pointed out the riff, but it kind of sounds like it's imitating horses galloping. You two should try out some Megadeth too. Dave Mustaine, the lead singer used to be in Metallica and played on this song. My favorite is "Sweating Bullets".
Nailed it in a metal head lingo. You hear it and know it. That was old Metallica and the respect you just earned by the Metallica fan base is out of this world. New amd Old. Some will love Old as other will Love new, you can like both but one or the other will your favorite.
One of Metallicas best songs, where rock'n roll meets thrash metal. Just imagine what this sounded like in the early 80s! It's so cool to see new people enjoying this nearly 40 years later
Still my favourite Metallic album, perhaps just because it was just such a seminal moment when it came out but it is the only one In listen to on a regular basis. Don't think I've listened to any others in 20 years.
@@rastomasstanford7708 Thanks, I just love all music. Not that you asked but I feel like a lot of people (older white people) miss out on how complex and dense some of the rap is both lyrically and instrumentally.

Method Man used the word “pestilence” in a wu tang song. And this song is about the Bible and the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse in the book of revelations. It’s early Metallica and it’s more thrash metal. The singer of Megadeath was in Metallica when they wrote this before he got kicked out for drinking too much
This song has very strong Black Sabbath influences. There's the heavy main part of the song (think Children of the Grave riff but Symptom of the Universe structure), and then the calmer softer B-part (like in Symptom of the Universe, Killing Yourself to Live etc). There are also the "yeah yeahs", which is soooo Ozzy. There's middle of the song solo and the ending solo, which Tony Iommi also loves.
The 4 Horsemen is a Biblical reference from the book of Revelations. Also, Miss.... G & R and Metallica toured together in '92 I believe. It didn't end well.
I went to this show In Oakland, CA in 92 (Sept IIRC). G&R was an hour late showing up on stage by the time they got there, the crowd had revolted, and tore up the entire lawn/outfield and a dirt clod war ensued. I was up in the stands and saw the fracas, it was like watching bats swarming over the crowd there was so much dirt clods flying. The city of Oakland sued G&R because they had to replace the entire outfield. Lead singer of Metallica James Hetfield suffered a bad burn injury on his arms during a show on that tour - he mistimed where he was, or the wrong fire jet burst but he was in the blast of it. They postponed the concert several months but James still didn't play guitar due to his injuries - they had a stand in for his rhythm guitar piece though I cannot remember now who it was. After an encore James came out strapping and played guitar on Enter Sandman to finish his set. Then after getting our asses kicked for 2 hours by those awesome songs, the crowd had to stand for over an hour while amped and tweeking waiting for Axl. Also, the third (opening band) was supposed to be Faith No More, but after the postponement, Faith No More was replaced by Ice T's metal band Body Count. I would have preferred Faith No More.
@@Frostrazor Yep, James got burned in St Louis I believe, and Axel, for whatever reason, refused to come on stage. It turned into a riot. James got treated and only missed a few shows. His Guitar Tech filled in for him, and allowed James to perform the Vocals.
It so funny it really like watching my lil brother and sister actually hearing music I grew up with. I love you both so much. Check out Trapped under ice by Metallica.
Lex, love the enthusiasm you have for metal especially Metallica. This is such an iconic song and brought many of us to be life long Metallica fans. IMO, the break at 3:42 is the most iconic break in metal music. Such a clean transition into a beautiful melodic riff. Just genius.
KILL 'EM ALL - the album that started it all! "No Remorse" released '82 (radio underground hooked me) definitely worth reacting to the rest of the album.
I've heard this song too many times, and I forget how great it is when in the middle of the song the riff goes sideways for a bit, and then Lars drops in with the beat and it all it all fits so tight. This fucking song is genius.
One of the best versions of this song is on the Cliffem All tribute video, performed live 1985 at the Metal Hammer Fest in Germany,Cliffs head banging is just unreal.
Lex Would enjoy Devin Townsend. His music mixes multiple elements and genres. He has some serious pipes as well. Kingdom: live EMGtv is a good one to start with.
Metallica is VERY well known for pioneering “the gallop”. It transforms the music and really gives it a grove. Really gives it life. These guys are gods of their craft. No one ever did as well as Metallica. Fight me on those words. lol. Without these guys, metal may have died. There wasn’t another band like them when they broke out. We riding the coat tails of Black Sabbath and the like. Metallica completely changed the game. Even Ozzy was blown away when Metallica opened for him. They legit went harder than Ozzy at that show….
Glad you guys did this one! Metallicas best album in my opinion. "No Remorse" from the same album is an ass kicker, starts off with a face melting guitar solo. Check it out and tell me I'm wrong. 🤘
Funny thing you guys mentiond a Guns N Roses and Metallica combo here as they toured together in the early 90s--probably one of the biggest tours ever as Metallica was supporting The Black ALbum and Guns N Roses had their double album of Use Your Illusion I and II as their most current works and both were selling like hotcakes.
11:20 exactly . also the gallop was originally to sound like a car engine when this song was called the mechanix . nice catch about the car peeling out .
Fun Megadeth Fact: Dave Mustaine wrote these riffs before he was kicked out of Metallica. He formed Megadeth and released a song with all these same riffs played at a much faster hyper speed... The song is called "Mechanix" by Megadeth so both songs you could say were written by Mustaine. It's a fun one to listen to back to back with Four Horsemen to hear how much different it is when its a Megadeth song.
Even though Mustaine didn’t play on “Kill Em All” he has writing credits on multiple songs including this one; he gets paid every time someone streams the song or buys the album. Not sure about the ‘without his permission’ thing, but I bet he likes cashing those checks.
To be clear for Lex, this is thrash metal. Metallica are part of "The big 4" including Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer. Metallica ventured away from this in 1991 and many fans did not like it. Other bands in this genre to name a few are Exodus, Overkill, Testament, and Sepultura.
A small pedantic point. Dave Mustaine was a member of Metallica at this point. He created Megadeath after a clash of egos. Your "just a few" are awesome. Man-o-War, Razor, Exciter for a few more.
Really disapointed . My comment was getting 3 likes an hour then suddenly stopped. Ends up it went from near the top of the comment list to buried in the middle somewhere. Was hoping to get some good metal talk going.
The song (maybe the heaviest Metallica song) was co-writed with Megadeth Dave Mustain (who was the former Metallica lead guitarist before been replaced just before recording the first album) : Megadeth recorded their own version called Mecanix (which seems to be the original title (/version ?) of the song)
This was written by Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) when he was in the band at the start, before he was sacked for various transgressions (generally his drinking I think!) They recorded it again after he had left and changed the words Dave was so pissed off he recorded his original version with Megadeth with the original words (a seedy sex song!) called Mechanix - its interesting to listen to them both. Daves is faster, rawer sounding but the exact same riffs!
@@P0lkoli they are indeed The 'Sweet Home Alabama' slow bit in the middle was a piss take by Dave when it was suggested to add something melodic, they kept it in 😁
Fun fact: Dave Mustaine (Megadeth frontman) pretty much wrote this song and they used it after they kicked him out of the band for being drunk and high all the time. I believe he's now credited as the writer or co-writer.
That is correct and the original version of this song, "Mechanix" appeared on Megadeth's first album. Edit: It can also be heard in its original form on Metallica's demo called "No life till leather".
That middle riff that gets slow came about because Dave was playing Lynyrd Skynyrds "Sweet Home Alabama" and Lars thought that Dave made it up so he told him put it in the song.

I watch all your reactions. What I think Lex likes the most about the metal bands, with guitarist with the 'flair' she loves, is the brain tickle it obviously gives her. Sometimes I think she is experiencing a drug type of feeling. Euphoria or something.
Absolutely makes me love my metal even more seeing it through eyes like these.
Now yall listening to my Fav Metallica album. I was wondering if you would get to their really heavy stuff.
Remember Dave Mustane wrote this song. He included it on the Megadeth album, Killing is my Business...And Business is Good. It's called Mechanix. Not only that, MetallicA as a group, Dave Mustane included, wrote these songs in their late teens & early twenty's. They all are & were (RIP Cliff) musical prodigies
This song is so much faster live. its crazy how much different the feel is live.
I love watching the live performance from Cliff Em All! 🎸🤘🏼🐎
It's even faster when you hear the real version, Mechanix from Megadeth
Mechanix is so good.
They also cut out that entire middle part
@@Tim_BoSlice Mechanix is trash dude. Lyrics are shit.
i have been ignorant. when i first started following you reactions i felt like you, brad, was an emotionless dongle. but i have come to realize you just got poker face. and your input is amazingly insightful.

This song is a reference to the 4 horseman of the apocalypse out of Revelation
So glad you guys chose this song. Amazing album. Prime Metallica! You have to check out "Seek & Destroy"
Amen to that my dude. Abso freaking lutely!
I genuinely love Lex's reactions to metal songs and much she enjoys them!
The four horsemen of the apocalypse from the book of revelation, the 4 riders appear on the earth to bring about the "end times".
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Horsemen_of_the_Apocalypse
There are varying interpretations of the names of the riders, in the song Metallica chose:
Rider 1: Time, Taking it's toll on you...
Rider 2: Famine (Hunger)
Rider 3: Pestilence (Means Plague or Sickness)
Rider 4: Death (X)
Also just for fun, Metallica has often referred to themselves as the 4 horsemen (at least in the early days), or been referred to by fans/media.
Thanks for saving me the time to type this!
Plus the fact that Lars' kick drum style is gallopy in nature.
They've done lots of megadeth songs
@@johnbush5347 Sorry, I'm new their channel.
Nailed it in a metal head lingo. You hear it and know it. That was old Metallica and the respect you just earned by the Metallica fan base is out of this world. New amd Old. Some will love Old as other will Love new, you can like both but one or the other will your favorite.
You guys got me cracking up! The referring to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!
My favorite song by far off of Kill em All
Five magics by megadeth.

You guys should react to "Mechanix" by Megadeth. Take a look at that after this reaction.
I was looking for this, and I second this.
This
Bey shed like Mechanix better
Mechanix is complete trash. Dave was not a very good lyricist in his earlier days

Lex is a little bundle of joy ❤️❤️❤️ It would be a sin not to love her
You guys really need to listen Dave Mustaine version. Megadeth - The Mechanix !!!
And the greatest band ever, faith no more were fucking with axle rose the whole tour
@@Frostrazor
Yep, James got burned in St Louis I believe, and Axel, for whatever reason, refused to come on stage. It turned into a riot. James got treated and only missed a few shows. His Guitar Tech filled in for him, and allowed James to perform the Vocals.

Lex, love the enthusiasm you have for metal especially Metallica. This is such an iconic song and brought many of us to be life long Metallica fans. IMO, the break at 3:42 is the most iconic break in metal music. Such a clean transition into a beautiful melodic riff. Just genius.
The four horsemen of the apocalypses. It's a Biblical reference from the book of Revelation about the end times.
"For whom the bell tolls" live with genius Cliff Burton!!! Stay heavy!
They have reacted to Bellz already, unfortunately not to this version tho.

Now do Phantom Lord off of the same album...its even better!
"One headphone thing" hahaha. STE-RE-OHHH lol

This is the song Dave Mustaine (megadeth) says they use some of his riffs and music on without his permission.
You can definitely hear one part that sounds like a Dave riff
Even though Mustaine didn’t play on “Kill Em All” he has writing credits on multiple songs including this one; he gets paid every time someone streams the song or buys the album. Not sure about the ‘without his permission’ thing, but I bet he likes cashing those checks.
Cmon guys, you can Google stuff during reactions.
Oops forgot Venom.
@@billdecat855 Mustaine loved Venom.
This was written by Dave Mustaine (Megadeth) when he was in the band at the start, before he was sacked for various transgressions (generally his drinking I think!)
They recorded it again after he had left and changed the words
Dave was so pissed off he recorded his original version with Megadeth with the original words (a seedy sex song!) called Mechanix - its interesting to listen to them both.
Daves is faster, rawer sounding but the exact same riffs!
Aren't the solos still Kirks?
@@P0lkoli they are indeed
The 'Sweet Home Alabama' slow bit in the middle was a piss take by Dave when it was suggested to add something melodic, they kept it in 😁
@@simonrobinson10 I'm glad they kept it, its the best part. The solo on top of it rides the beat so well
Fun fact: Dave Mustaine (Megadeth frontman) pretty much wrote this song and they used it after they kicked him out of the band for being drunk and high all the time. I believe he's now credited as the writer or co-writer.
That is correct and the original version of this song, "Mechanix" appeared on Megadeth's first album.
Edit: It can also be heard in its original form on Metallica's demo called "No life till leather".
the first 4 Metallica Albums deserve full Album reviews, nothing less!!!!
That middle riff that gets slow came about because Dave was playing Lynyrd Skynyrds "Sweet Home Alabama" and Lars thought that Dave made it up so he told him put it in the song.
