  • In this video Upholstering Channel Back Chair Part 4 of 4, Measuring and cutting the pieces for the channel back, Kim teaches you how to create the inside back of a channel back chair. The entire process involves measuring, cutting, sewing, stuffing and attaching the assembly to the upholstered chair frame.
We have made this process into a 4 part tutorial.
Part 1 Measuring and cutting the pieces for the channel back.
Part 2 Assembling and sewing the channels together.
Part 3 Stuffing the channels with cotton or your choice of filler.
Part 4 Attaching the completed assembly to the chair frame.

That was amazing! I have a set of two channel-back chairs and until I found this video I did not even know that is what they are called. Mine are over 100 years old and I am pretty sure they still have the original fabric on them. I can't wait to take them apart and see what I can do with them. Thank you so much. BTW I am 80 years old and as soon as the dress I am working on is finished it is onward with the chairs.

I have fallen in love with these chairs and have one I would love to reupholster but I do not sew and have never used a machine! I always wanted to learn and am sure I should take a sewing class before attacking this chair project!

Just upholstered an old chair purchased at an estate sale. I couldn't have done it without you Kim....thanks so much. I followed your video, step by step, and it turned out great.

Years ago we did channel backs in the workroom. I liked seeing the way you made the pattern because I know we tore apart the old and used for pattern. ( and actually matched a floral print -that turned out amazing ) ( no longer doing that sort of work ) I had piping tins and they took legs and I never got them back and even though I am no longer doing that sort of work, I still think about the loss of my tins. I am amazed you can work with rings on...especially that one that the stone sticks out on...I would ruin something!

I just got the same channel back chair from a thrift store and was planning to reupholster it. Your video was great. I can only hope for my chair to look as good as the one you did on this video. Thank you Kim!!

You make it look incredibly EASY -- but I know better! My own attempts have never gone so well, ever. LOL Practice makes perfect, I know, but eventually, one must acknowledge the need for a ... teacher or ..a shaman!! Great vids, thanks! (want an apprentice??)

Thank you so much, Ms Kim! I took upholstering classes for five years in adult school, doing my own projects, then later started getting customers. I had never had a project with channels in class, so hadn't learned. Now I live in a different state with no access to classes. My current client's jackknife sofa (from about the 40's?) is really cool, with, of all things, channels on the OUTside of the arms!. Oh soo Art Deco! I was going nuts trying to get the ends of the channels to lay properly but couldn't figure it out and my books are no help. Then... (drum roll...) here is your video! And yours is the best one. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You saved the day.

You really deserve a bigger audience. There isn't much at all I would have done differently, I'm not saying you did anything the wrong way, there's just different ways for different folks. Anyway, I think you should approach a craft magazine of some kind for sponsorship, it should benefit both sides and the viewers. It's becoming a lost art/trade to cheep imports.
    Great fluting series, Thanks.

I have an antique victorian sofa with matching chair and a channel back chair that I inherited from my Grandmother that I've been wanting to reupholster. This will help with that channel back chair!!! Any words of advice on fabrics, patterns etc. I don't want to ruin the period of the piece but I'd like a brighter more cheerful fabric. Oh also I didn't see you do the seat of this chair, did I miss a video? Thanks so much I've been searching and searching to try to learn this.

Shannon Jesmer you did not miss the seat, we did not do an entire upholstery video on that chair. Kim

kim, do you happen to have a video of how to upholster the rest of the chair? or at least the arms? If you do, or know of one that might help, I'd really appreciate it.

Question: In the first video of this series the completed chair you showed had buttons in between the channels. Did you show this process in another video?
