Notre Dame would tie the game at 69 with 14 seconds left, but Ron Brewer would hit a jumper as time expired to give the Hogs the 71-69 win. This is crazy because I saw Ron Brewer the other day and I asked him about this game. He said they really should have been playing in the championship game that year. He also talked about how great Moncrief was, said he had 7 footers pump faking Moncrief because they were scared he was going to block their shots.

This is true. The next year, Arkansas played Larry Bird and Indiana St in the Elite Eight game. Bird scored a ton in 1st half. In the 2nd half, Sutton put Moncrief on Bird. I think Bird scored 4 points in the 2nd half. Bird is 6'9". Moncrief is 6'4".
Indiana St beat Arkansas on a last second junk shot by Bob Heaton. They lost to Magic Johnson and Mich St in the finals that year.

I'm sure Ron and the Arkansas fans feel they should have been in the title game. But Kentucky beat them in the Final Four (after beating Magic Johnson and Michigan State in the regionals)- the Hogs had a great, memorable team in 78 but no one was beating that Kentucky team.

I hate to ask but do you have the infamous Indiana State game of 1979? I've heard that there was a controversial blown call involving US Reed that was a key factor at the end of the game.

+illmatic95 I think my dad has it on a VHS somewhere. I've thought about posting highlights of it.

Bit of irony, 2 future Detroit Pistons champions played in the old 3rd place consolation game.
Bill Laimbeer would lose the 1978 game to Arkansas and 1 year later, Mark Aguirre would set a freshman mark with 38 points as DePaul beat Penn.
Ironically 2 years later, another Pistons champion, Isiah Thomas, would lead Indiana to the national title and LSU and Virginia would play in the last consolation game ever played in the NCAA Tournament.

The reason why you see IU’s basketball floor in St. Louis is the checkerdome floor was water damaged.

Did anyone notice that Bill Laimbeer played on Notre Dame team?

He was dirty then too. In the first half, he would hit Counce with an elbow sending him to the ER then surgery to have his kidney removed.
