  • Melvyn started his career as a signwriter serving his time with his father (also a master signwriter and gilder) from the age of 16. From an early stage in his career, he showed a great interest in gilding and back glass painting. Over the years this interest grew until Mel was himself a master gilder, as well as a time served signwriter.
    In 1979 he formed Caldy Signs and so began a hugely successful business, with contracts ranging from signwriting an oil rig, refitting petrol stations to gilding for some of the most prestigious jewelers in the country.here is Mel demonstrating traditional signwriting skills

    Learnt with the old school and its clear that the spacing between letters is important, infact , the key to good signwriting.

    Im a total novice only started this xmas and have watched many many videos from youtube and have done a good few hours practice and a few things are just starting to come together and starting to make sense but the way you used your mahl stick as a straight edge and guide is brilliant that will help me greatly im sure ,cant wait to try it tomorrow. Ive seen no one do this like you on loads of youtube videos, well done.Many thanks: Dick Searle UK

      @@signschool2238 I thank you very much for your reply,appreciated . Love the Mahl stick thing but I can't quite make out in your videos, do you actually run the ferral of your paintbrush against your mail stick or are you using your fingers? I've tried both methods today running the brush ferrol against the malh stick is easier for me but can get a tad messy!

      It’s always good to sit and continually draw letters as the shapes get lodged in your brain i would even trace them as often as possible , but practice with the brush as often as possible it takes a long time to get used to the feel of the brush it needs to become an extension of your hand . Cheers Mel.

    I don't understand why you used the tape. Surely this prevents you from extending the curved letters past reference lines (as they should be for visual appeal) and things like that? The end result doesn't look right without the curved letters extending past the reference lines, in my opinion.

    • @signschool2238
      @signschool2238  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you have let’s say a full van to letter with a lot on it the tape increases your speed dramatically and you tip the rounds at the end to be successful and make a living without losing quality you have to be fast I find it helpful abs so do a lot of my colleagues 😄

    Unimpressed by this video. Hard to hear what man was saying. I feel his experience in this demonstration made the job look all too easy. No explanation as to what font he was using. No explanation as to what paint etc. No explanation as to how to prepare substrate ready for lettering. He made the letter spacing look so easy as you would expect but he should bear in mind the majority of viewers will have no idea how to set words out. Having had a modicum of technical drawing I could set this out but don’t think many others can.
    Waste of what could of been an informative video.

    When trying to teach anything, get rid of the background noise. It’s annoying and useless in every way there is
