Love watching Blanda as a kid because of his age, versatility (came in several times to replace the injured Darryle Lamonica) and resilience. He made this East Coast kid a Raiders fan as a kid.
George Blanda is one of my favorite football players. I very much enjoyed watching him play & win not only with his arm, but also with his foot. What a great football player George Blanda remains to this day. As much as I like & admire Tom Brady, I will always hold George Blanda in the highest reguard.
I am 69 yrs old and from Ky. I remember Blanda well as a pro, especially as a Raider, as I was a Raider fan. I was not born when he played for Ky and did not even know that he had played for Ky until very late in his career. He was very exciting to watch as Raider. Pulled them through many a game.
Blanda's 1961 season was so amazing. He had 36 TD passes in only 12 games. Marino only had 32 TD passes in 12 games in 1984, on his way to 48 total in 16 games. Both guys averaged 3 TD passes per game but Blanda did not have the Mel Blount Rule of 1978 to help him like Marino did. That rule had to do with bump and run between defensive backs and receivers.
They both were great in different way. Saw Marino in rookie season playing junk time complete a pass with the quickest release I ever saw. Figured he'd start very soon Blanda in that stretch in 70 where he pulled the Raiders out of a few holes was pure enertainment. You couldn't make it up. His attitude was pure Oakland. From someone who retired from beach lifeguarding at 56, Vol FF at 59, and the Navy as a Grunt HM at 55. It was time.
sure I'll add him to my list! I got a couple videos scheduled (next one is on Gale Sayers), but I'll get working on this and will be ready some time mid-Jan.
Tommy John played almost as long as Nolan Ryan and came back from the surgery that bears his name. He and/or Dr. Frank Jobe deserve to be in the Baseball Hall of Fame for the groundbreaking procedure and comeback. Also, after a two year retirement Gordie Howe played into his fifties in pro hockey.
@nflunveiled He was Daryl Lamonica's (the mad bomber) backup and the place kicker. He was called into service (as a qb) in a couple crucial games for the raiders and was a hero.
Even though he played MLB, Nolan Ryan played just as long (26 seasons). He would have made it 27 had he not missed the 1967 season for whatever reason.

I remember Blanda very well. He was frequently asked, "When are you going to retire?" To which he would always reply, "Never!"
Old School was so much tougher then the modern players...Old School is the Best School!

George grew up near my hometown in Western PA. Amazing man.
Tough. Just plain tough. Guys like him n billy Kilmer n sonny jergenson amoung others in those days - they were tough and could flat play
This is AMAZING content!
Thank you.
thank you Billy much appreciated 🙏

Dan Marino broke Blanda's TD record in 1984, not 1986. In 1984 Marino threw for 48 TDs... a mind-boggling number at the time.

oof my bad I'm blind, thanks for the correction
@nflunveiled Just curious, but how long have you been an NFL fan?
started watching when I fairly young, but my first season was 2012
@@Tubeite Intrest lessened lately but since dirt was new.
Maybe you could do a piece on Earl Morrall? (if you haven't done so already?)

Great content. How about a video on Billy Cannon.
you got it! I'll add it to my list. Got a few scheduled, but I'll get working on it
And Chuck Bednarik….
he stayed around because he was also a kicker.
yes 100% true. Still had some legendary runs as a QB!
@nflunveiled He was Daryl Lamonica's (the mad bomber) backup and the place kicker. He was called into service (as a qb) in a couple crucial games for the raiders and was a hero.
The last time that he went in as their backup quarterback he was already 46 years old
Absolutely true!! He was a better kicker than A QB.
Actually, Marino first broke the record in 1984 when he threw 48.
Me and my Dad's favorite played because he played until he was so old.

He played 27 seasons 66,68-93
Nolan Ryan didn't miss the 1967 season, he was in the minor leagues for that entire season.
3:08 why is the British spelling "colour" used here?
3:00 mark LOL go up there....... they want you..........
Men's income 1950 $2,900, then record high 1955 3,400!😅 Banda was definitely goat, Iron man!! Playing till he was 48 years old!
The raiders should've kept him one more year. Earl Mann was terrible the next season.
What a shame that they cut him before the season that they won the NFL championship.
would have been awesome for him to get that ring
Johnny Unitas = U of L. George Blanda = U of K. Neither had coaches willing to see their potential.
