The Greatest Receiver Ever (Not Jerry Rice)

The Greatest Receiver Ever (Not Jerry Rice)
Brett Favre has the most powerful arm in football.
A great defense will beat the great offense, every time.
Maybe you should consider Joe Thomas…
Joe Thomas is awesome, but Matthews played almost 130 games more than Thomas
I liked the insertion of the greatest pass ever thrown by Patrick Mahomes in the Super Bowl from an absolute full horizontal layout. I think he acquired his target in the air and pulled the trigger, not like he just made a diving throw on purpose. But since it wasn't caught, it doesn't count :(. It seems kind of crazy that running for your life was innovative in his time, lol.. I never heard the take that his negative 30 and 40 yard retreats were just to get to a closer spot to throw from. I wonder how often his linemen held trying to hold their blocks or wandered downfield back in the day. But maybe the ineligible downfield is mostly a screen pass timing thing and they probably gave up on blocking after while to avoid penalties.
I know right. I recall Fran saying in an interview the unwritten rule was collapse in the pocket if the pressure comes, not scramble lol
He was very entertaining. He had a lot of records but never won a Super Bowl. This is the one thing if I could would be to have him at least win of those games.
Fran was incredibly smart, probably the smartest that ever played but my Vikes were not gonna beat the Dolphins or later in 76 the Raiders in the Super Bowl, they had a good chance against a young steelers but could do virtually nothing against that steel curtain. In all 3 games with Tark the defense of the vikes were manhandled by first the Dolphins, then Steelers and then the Raiders and so was their offensive lines against those powerful defenses of the AFC champs then SB winners. Defenses just keyed on Foreman and Gilliam and those two were the Vikes big guns but they were well covered.
They had a tough matchups in those Super Bowls, but Fran agrees with you...in his own words: “I've never had a day go by I don't regret not being able to do something more to help my team win a Super Bowl”
“It wasn’t untill he had some studs that he was able to win” Now if the talking heads who hate on Brock Purdy knew this.
Best game ever , LOB that’s why!!!
Jim Marshall
Not really dual threat. Everyone who played against him, especially in the Super Bowl, knew how to beat Tarkenton. Keep him in the pocket and force him to beat you with his arm
How would you keep him in the pocket?
@@dvldog_ Don't try to blitz, do zone coverage on his receivers. For whatever reason, Tarkenton was an excellent regular season QB, but teams always squashed him in the Super Bowl.
It's pretty simple: Defense > Offense.
Put Seattle had the number one defense defense wins championships not the offense
Bruce Matthews' longevity was such that he once blocked for Earl Campbell (who ran for 1,300 yards in Matthews' rookie season, despite the ineptitude of that '83 Oilers team) and the fathers of ex-Colts QBs Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck, Archie Manning and Oliver Luck (the latter was the Oilers' starting QB for the last game the Colts ever played representing Baltimore), and lasted long enough to have played in the first Super Bowl played in the 21st century.
yep pretty crazy!
Watching the LOB run the show was one of the most magical days of my life. As a life long Seahawks fan it felt like a literal high watching them dominate the Broncos. Great video
Thank you! I can imagine, awesome day for Seahawks fans.
@@nflunveiledIt was a great day! Which for me went straight down a cliff when my grandma called me. "That was the most boring football game I ever watched!"😂🤣😂🤣 Thanks Grandma 😂 Tbf, that side are Bears fans. It's a good thing my mom didn't allow sports, because I had free reign of who to choose (moved to Seattle and picked the home team, not a bandwagon fan). Thank God I'm not a Bear's fan!
He was a terrible QB, but I'd say that JaMarcus Russell had the strongest arm in NFL history. He could throw the ball 60+ yards from his knees
yeah Russell is definitely up there. From his knees is absurd
The Broncos were only the "favorites" according to people who hadn't been paying attention to Seattle that season. Anyone who had been paying attention knew that the Broncos were EXACTLY the type of team that the Seahawks spent all season slapping around, most of us figured that a blowout was more than a possibility.
Forever a favorite player from my youth.
Same, I loved watched him playing!
Elway, Favre and Marino would have been my guesses.
You cannot find the NFL films version of the full game of this super bowl on TH-cam like you can with many other Superbowls. Rather interesting
Brits getting into football is a weird niche Ive recently discovered. There's a Brit that covers the Hawks, as well as that one little dude at PFF.
can you blame us? Soccer is boring
All I watch is Football and MMA. All other sports put me to sleep.
@@nflunveiledThanks for saying that! Televised soccer just looks like ants running around on a field. I’m a Seattle resident and of course a Seahawks fan. Stay tuned, we may have a LOB2 germinating this season.
I love having a British man telling me how good Bruce Manning way. Greatness goes far beyond borders. . .
was* Fat fingers
😂
Terry Bradshaw had an incredible arm as well. And rumor has it that Sonny Jurgensen could flat sling the rock, as well. Staubach, too. Oh yeah, I almost forgot Joe Namath also had a sick arm. Equal to Elway's for sure.
Jamarcus russell, for all of his faults, had a rocket for an arm. Back when he was drafted I heard a lot about how he could throw 70 yards from his knees.
I've heard that too, crazy!
"You have seven defenders in coverage against the number one defense" 😂🤣 whaaa? The 8 defenders in coverage against another defense?! Stop relying on AI. I do real quality voiceovers. It'll help your channel avoid silly errors like the one I mentioned.
Good to know I sound like an AI-I’ll be safe when they take over the world. Also, if they aren't blitzing (i.e. just sending 4), then there are 7 in coverage, not 8? Unless you’re referring to a specific play? If so, I didn’t mean to highlight any particular play with that sentence-my bad if it was unclear
@@nflunveiled i apologize. My bad.
Jeff George had a terrifying football arm. Too bad he couldn’t keep his brain together.
“million dollar arm and a 10-cent head”
thts big man great job
💪
That has to make the Legion of boom the best defense ever, to shut down the best offense stat wise
I wouldn't say one game (even against the #1 offence) makes them the greatest. They were an all time great defence for sure, but I would put several defences ahead of them on an 'all-time' list. At least, that's my opinion.
It absolutely does. If anyone disagrees they are delusional
They were the #1 defense that year, beating multiple top 10 offenses. They beat down the saints twice, holding them to less than 300 yards in those games, and under 20 points, with Drew Brees. They also kept the 9ers down, which were a top offense in the lease during that time. They played in an era where there was more protection for offenses as they were trying to lean the league towards points. They were the #1 defense for 4 years in a row. The resume for the legion of boom is vast, which spaned 4 seasons. Unfortunately, the 15 superbowl loss will cripple that record. But yes, the best offense in nfl history was obliterated by the best defense in history. Everyone quotes the 85 bears, and the 00 ravens, but who did they beat? A first ballot hall of famer, with a star studded cast of offensive weapons that put up the MOST tds, points and yards that year. If you gonna be the best, you gotta beat the best. 2013 seahawks legion of boom beat the best ever, to that point, they are the best.
@@nflunveiled Brother, they were the number 1 D for like 3 or 4 years straight. Youre acting like the SB was the only great performance they had.
They're ranked number 5 all time
Ronnie Lott is the best safety ever. Sorry not sorry.
Did u read the title of the video? Maybe not ..... Ronnie was the greatest allround safety...... but Reed was the GREATEST FREE SAFETY ever - everyone knows it
@@sportislife4012Lmao 🤣🤣🤣 Ok, I see you tried to puff your chest out and show how smart 🤓 you are when it comes to football 🏈. Unfortunately you failed miserably. In the interest of clarity I must point out that Ronnie Lott played the vast majority of his time at safety as the FREE SAFETY. 5 seasons with the 49ers starting in 1986 and finishing in 1990. Lott then went on to play FREE SAFETY for the then Los Angeles Raiders in 91 & 92. And I even think 🤔 he was the FREE SAFETY when he played for The Jets. But since you want specificity I'll oblige you. Ronnie Lott is the BEST FREE SAFETY to ever play in the NFL. And Lott is the best STRONG SAFETY to ever play in the NFL even though he didn't play STRONG SAFETY as long as he played FREE SAFETY. Next time, do your research before you try to correct anyone about anything. 🦉 🎓
John Elway once launched a ball from home plate over the Center Field Fence at the Old YANKEE STADIUM, he didn't hit it though He did by throwing it !!
Speaking of baseball I heard tales that Bo Jackson could throw a football 80 yards. Makes you wonder why the Raiders never tried a half back option with him and their track star receivers.
haha
And Still there is no respect for TN Titians
Don't forget Jeff George. Never amount to much of a quarterback in the NFL but had an amazing arm strength
Yep Jeff George is definitely in the conversation
Didn't expect this accent for the video. Usually people with that accent are assholes who make fun of American football calling it handegg and shit
Don Hutson is another pre-super bowl era player I really admire. He was the pioneer of modern route running and the best wide receiver of his time
he's awesome! I did a video on his record for most points in a quarter. I should do a deeper dive actually
For some reason when I hear "football" in that accent I think "soccer" 😅
lol understandable
A rather dirty player really. Lots of late hits after the whistle.
NO QUESTION GREATEST SAFETY EVER
🙌
Best Free Safety, for sure! Best SS is still Ronnie to me
Bro whats up with the sound and voice?
Here is the best way to describe Bruce Matthews in the simplest, shortest and most honest way possible. He's a real life space marine from the 40k universe.
I think that you should have added more about their family. Out of his 7 kids, 4 played in college and 2 in the NFL. Also 2 of his nephews played in the NFL, the family is just gifted with drive and genetics.
thanks for the feedback. It's true, crazy genes in that family!
What a family. What a champion.
seriously, great family genetics!
Great family state of mind! Lots of people have excellent genetics, but few follow it up with hard work & discipline.
@@poppasmurf2044 this is true!
I've watched many games in the Astrodome during the 80s and Bruce always looked like his helmet was too small 😂
lmao
Thank you
thanks for the idea, it was a great Super Bowl! Hopefully you enjoyed.
I put that game up condensed th-cam.com/video/NGugJu5Sft4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=WalterWhite 70 minutes of great football. Panthers were definitely punching above their weight. Pats with #1 D were the typical SB winner profile. Carolina was avg at everything.
thanks for sharing that 🙏
Let's go! Giving some o line love!
🙌 they don't get enough love
Recently heard on NFL network a commentator describe Aaron Donald as the greatest defensive player in league history. That 'expert' must not have known about Dick Butkus.
haha definitely!
Cincinnati Bengals QB David Klingler might have had an even stronger arm. Dude did not last long in the league, but the marks he put on the hands of his receivers did. John Elway was my favorite player, largely due to my fascination around the jaw-dropping power of his arm-as well as his general bad-assery. But the truth is that at a certain point, guys can only differentiate so much on this measure; the ball’s kinda heavy and awkward, and the human body has limits on how it can impart velocity. So while you could measure fastest throws if you had a radar gun, bottom line is that on any given day, guys like Elway, Jeff George, Favre, Herbert, Klingler or any number of of names past and present are probably gonna be pretty close.
Yes I'm inclined to agree. The strongest arms would clock in at very similar speeds.
Elway played high altitude - thin air, its only going to help the ball go faster when the air is so thin. How did he compare when he was playing on the same field as the other strong armed QBs?
Well he threw a football 80 yards (actual ball distance) in San Diego at age 39. So is that good enough for you, sea level?
@bcornel5923 the question was about speed? He doesn't throw 80mph when in San Diego lol Being in Denver definitely helps him throw faster and longer. He's never once thrown close to 80 yards in the air with pads and a defence in front of him...I seriously doubt your sources.
Jim Parker! End of Story
Same answer I've had for 50 yrs. - Bert Jones
Drew Bledsoe was one of the best players of the 1990s. There are at least two generations of fans that have no idea how pitiful New England really was before 1993. And after the 2023 season you can’t help but wonder if they are heading back in that direction.
true! After 6 Super Bowls I don't want to hear any complaining from Pats fans for at least a decade tho...
That Chicago Cardinals record had a lot more to do with all the players that joined the military in WWII. It makes the Bucs 0-26 start even worse.
100%
