- This poor chicken did a lot of work for her babies, Her first batch of chicken eggs were all duds and the duck eggs were not much better.

Yeah, and ducks tend to bond to the first thing they see after hatching, which was a chicken.
I once put some baby chickens and ducks in the same pen and gave the ducks a bowl of water for swimming. Big mistake. The baby chickens somehow thought they, too, were ducks and they all hopped into the water bowl with the baby ducks, nearly drowning themselves or dying of hypothermia. Luckily, I discovered the wet chicks very quickly and was able to dry and warm them, so they survived. Baby ducks are waterproof and float, but despite having a similar fuzzy appearance, baby chicks are NOT waterproof. In water, baby chicks become cold, soaking wet, and can easily die if not rescued. They sink like stones, too, so they will drown if the water is deep enough. Even rain can kill baby chickens because they have no waterproofing and will become soaked and cold if they're not sheltered during a rainstorm.

When I was kid, I dropped a table tennis ball at the nesting place of our hen. She included it to her other eggs & sat on them all.
Some people use gold balls to teach chickens to use the next box, it works....lol

How wonderful Mother Nature can be. Not everyone can be as masterful as this gentleman is with his knowledge of farm animals. May seem easy but farm life requires a special knack.

My dad raised all sorts of fowl. He worked for the highway department and they would mow along the roads in Kansas and he would find his menagerie nests of pheasant eggs and he would bring the eggs home and put them under his pigeons. My dad would have a hen that would want to set when she wouldn't fertile days eggs and one duck wouldn't accept that he didn't want her to. He bought eggs at times to add more variety to his menagerie. TFS

Not all of them are like this but I tend to keep the more relaxed ones, makes taking care of them a lot easier.

Cristina .Filipe I mean, chickens can still be prejudiced towards other chickens.
Since they can see colours, they can tell when one hen doesn't look like the rest, especially if she's not the same breed or color pattern.
So, in essence, chickens can be just as racist as humans unless brought up in a flock of different breeds.

The egg whack was just accidental; he is indeed a wonderful, gentle sweet man, and you can tell by his kind speech and how he talks, in such a friendly tone to that great mother hen; the hen was really being gentle with him too, and she cares for the baby ducklings just like her own, without any distinction or discrimination! Wouldn't it be wonderful if all people were the same way? I really enjoyed the video, since chickens are among my favorite animals, and they provide us with eggs too! It's too bad that most people don't appreciate them as much as they deserve it! I love everything about chickens, ever since I was a little boy in Puerto Rico, where we had roosters, hens and chicks free roaming around our house, in the beautiful tropical countryside! The clucking of that hen, and the peeping of her ducklings, is like music to my ears! They remind me of dinosaurs, and actually, like all other birds, that is exactly what they are: the last surviving remnants of the dinosaur age!

In every animal I find mothers who put most human mothers and fathers in another galaxy entirely, their absolute love their absolute DEVOTION to me is maybe the most wonderful things in nature and why my house is filled with so many different moms and dads :-) who really care for their babies, and zero humans, ZERO, in my home the only human is me the rest is just wonder, love love love, I'd never have any other way, I feel blessed I have been able to live my dream it took me decades but finally I'm able to help many many of MY best friends, and we love each other unconditionally , humans??? I can't say I know anyone like this, even the smallest bird I have shows more love more care for his family omg, I've learned so much with all of them

The chickens at my uncles farm have roosters with them so it is a good chance that they will be fertilized. I have hens and no roosters. But they are not at the point to laying yet. They probably going to sit on empty eggs every day so I will probably take some eggs from my uncles farm and put them under her.
Not all chickens go broody, the more popular high production chickens don't go broody, they have no interest in being a mom, there only job is to make eggs, so it well depend on the breed you have.

For the first year of my flocks life, I had to play mama hen for them and dig up worms. They learned from me and now I can't sit down outside without them thinking I'm hunting for treats.

I always feel so sorry for the broody hens but I get bantams every year that spend the summer broody in the nest box. Just in the past week they have all given up and gone back to being normal.

I mean, I love watching all videos where animals raise babies that aren’t theirs but.. especially chickens raising ducks for some reason lol maybe because ducklings instinctively follow their mom everywhere and chickens seem to be better moms that actual ducks are so.. almost like it works better nature wise lol
