The TRUTH About Milli Vanilli & MASTER MANIPULATOR Frank Farian | Fab's Triumphant New Beginning

  • I was a teenager when Milli Vanilli was at the height of their quick rise to fame and their quick downfall. It seems that everyone blamed them (Fab & Rob) for their lip-syncing scandal, but their producer, Frank Farian, was the one pulling the strings. It seems like a good deal of blame belonged to Clive Davis and Arista Records too. Why couldn't we see that back then?
It is great to see Fab Morvan moving forward and being successful in his music career. I wish that Rob could have been here to see it and enjoy it. May he rest in peace.

@@TisHotMessHistory Good Afternoon I remember when this happened. I wasn't a huge fan of the group, but I was also upset at what happened to them. Especially when I heard them sing with their real voices. I saw later interviews with Fab and he revealed how Frank wanted to work with both Fab and Rob and Fab rightfully refused. I have some trivia about Frank Farrian's ways. In 1988, R&B and Quiet Storm Trio Surface had wrote a song titled Don't Take It Personal and Arista's A&R had told them a group and their producer wanted to work on the song. The trio wanted to work with Frank in the studio but Frank refused and wanted the group to send him the tracks. The trio wanted Frank to either fly to the States or allow them to fly to Germany to produce the song with him. Frank refused and even Clive Davis tried to work things out but the trio said that if they can't work with Frank in the studio it's a no. Frank refused so they gave the song to Jermaine Jackson who scored his 2nd # 1 R&B single with that classic in 1989. The trio said that Jermaine was very easy to work with and at 1st he didn't like their songs but once he learned that they were written by Surface he had a change of mind and he decided to work with them with only 1 condition. That they record the song in the same studio where they recorded their album 2nd Wave and single Shower Me With Your Love at. The studio happened to be in a family's friend's basement in New Jersey

the obsession with singing live is crazy. Frank Farian obviously had great ideas, he did a lot of covers or sample's for Boney M's music and they always came out great, the issue with payments came because Maizie and Bobby didn't sing on the albums so they would never receive royalties for it so they probably became frustrated that Liz and Marcia were getting paid more but that's because their voices are recognized as part of Boney M. Frank did a really shitty thing with boney m though, he replaced bobby and then allowed the replacement to sing and the last boney m album is basically what frank wanted to produce for the bobby replacement a few years later the original members Marcia, Maizie and Bobby left and formed their own edition and released the song Everybody Wants To Dance Like Josephine Baker and frank sued them and was successful in claiming Boney M can only be used by him, he did that because the song was beginning to gain traction and was set to become their biggest 80s hit after frank failed to make hits for the band. I think this is why frank started with milli vanilli, he was missing that creative output of just compiling stuff in the recording studio and having models dance and mime to the recordings.

Frank Farian has been a TH-cam obsession for me the past few days as I have learned more about him. As an American, I was unfamiliar with Boney M my whole life but lately have been fascinated by their videos after they started coming up in my feed. Can we talk about cultural appropriation for a minute? Half of the Boney M songs I can find are disco mixes riffing off one catch phrase or another that Farian has recorded and played around with in the studio, like Do You Wanna Bump or Daddy Cool. The other half are covers of classic Caribbean tunes like Rivers of Babylon, Brown Girl in the Ring and Mary's Boy Child, and they counted as some of the biggest hits. I find nothing written by Farian that would count as a substantive lyric. Maybe you can consider Rasputin, which was co-written by Farian with two others, to be substantive (at least it tells a story). Also, consider this: The performers are all of Caribbean background. The guy who makes most of the money is the white German producer. For his next act after Boney M., Farian covers a song recorded by a hip-hop group in Baltimore and gets two impoverished men of African background to serve as his new band's frontmen. He hangs them out to dry when things start falling apart. There is something about what is going on in these transactions that I find especially brazen and callous. Unfortunately, I don't think it will be the final example of it in the music industry.

Their story is so sad. I was born in the early 90s so I wasn't around during their fame and downfall. I heard about them growing up, but I "discovered" their music a month ago. They were young and desperate, but I don't blame them at all. They were used as pawns in the game and wee set up to fail from the start. And the skipping track thing was most definitely sabotage. And I do believe Frank had something to do with Rob's death because German police initially ruled his death as suspicious because he was found with head trauma.
I read in another article that he was found on the floor with blood pouring from his nose and mouth. I do know some meds that will make you bleed from the mouth and nose if you take too much of it, so he coulda died from a brain hemorrhage as a consequence of taking too much medication, but idk, something doesn't sit right with his death. I mean yes, he was addict and had drug problems, but something is up with the conflicting reports.

Hi there, as you probably didn't hear - besides of what Frank did or not, after the scandal, when Rob start causing criminal problems and went to jail, Frank payed 600$ and took him out. Frank payed all his Flights back to germany and Frank payed his Rehab. Frank also payed his stay in germany. Frank - the evil - although he was producing smash hits for La Bouche and No Mercy ( Both No.1 in the charts ) produced also an Album for Rob! Before the vocals werde recorded Rob decided to go first for another rehab on Caribbean - payed by Frank - the evil. The day when Rob has to leave to the airport - he was founded by who? Milli, the friend of Frank. There was no body who took care of him except Frank and Milli. They we're the first who called emergency and police.
Donut get me wrong but there was absolutely no issue for Frank after all the help and pre produced album to kill Rob! Frank the evil never ever wanted someone to die. He is actually a simple guy who's talent is to produce records. All Frank wanted is to sell records. Though he was helping Rob through all the years without informing a press. Frank felt responsible for him. Rob had a huge past history in terms of suiccide. I think you can all accuse Frank but not that he did anything like killing Rob. God bless

I listened to their album Rob & Fab and I thought it was pretty good. It would've been a lot more successful had that scandal not happend. Fab always seemed like the stronger of the two. In watching their old performance clips I noticed Rob would often look to Fab for cues. I'm sad Rob couldn't find peace but I'm glad Fab was able to keep going. Great video!

But, I give Rob & Fab, mad props for their honesty. And no, I did not seek any refund for that tape. $6, wasn't gonna make or break me. Not only that, I'm not surprised those two fellas were thrown under the bus. Farian, nor Arista wasn't abt to take the fall for that. That took courage for Rob n Fab. I was only a child when the lip synching backlash was occurring during 1989-90. I didn't pay much attention to the scandal because I frankly didn't care that they weren't really singing on the CD.
Then in 1991, they made a Gum commercial, then in 1992 they released a CD with their actual real voices which I thought was actually cool. But it didn't sell.
In late 1997, VH1's Behind The Music did an episode on Milli Vanilli. And then suddenly, just several months later in April 1998, Rob Pilatus tragically Died in Frankfurt, Germany at the untimely age of 33.
That made the whole story tragic and heartbreaking.

C and C Music Factory and Black Box were sued by Martha Wash, the actual singer on the records. She was asked to do a demo, and the producers of both groups decided that she was too fat to be in the videos and replaced her with models. Martha Wash has such a wonderful voice. Image for MTV was important and even Ya Kid K with Technotronic was not in the Pump up the Jam because they thought she looked like a boy.

Thank you so much for the compliment! I know that some people know the truth, but not everyone who knows the first part of the story. You can support Fab here on TH-cam. He has his own channel. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, Mitchiko Parrish!

What happened to Milli Vannilli was tragic! So what if they lip synched? LOTS of singers do it now! So what? Milli Vannilli does it and its a crime? Oh please! They were great dancers and showmen, and THAT'S what made their concerts! The audience certainly didn't mind. It breaks my heart what happened to Rob. He's gone now. I don't know how their Frank Farian can even sleep at night, knowing what happened to Rob. He caused what happened! Rob could've still been here with us.

And a man committed suicide behind the shame that wasn't due to him... The evil of these manipulating demons in the industry knows no bounds.. I ALWAYS said it wasn't their fault. And, surprisingly, they could REALLY sing.

So JLO used Ashanti and other Black female artists voices and no one is saying anything about that?

I heard Fab sing "girl you know it's true" in their own voices once on TV after the truth came out. He could actually sing. He just had an accent.
