Thank you sir! I am 66yrs old and successfully just dismounted a 15" trailer tire by your instruction. There were some glitches, but we got 'er done!

70 years old and can't believe I never thought of breaking a tire down off of the rim this way - I even had all the stuff to do it !!! Thanks - even though I feel like an idiot !

That works very well with the ratchet strip. If no ratchet strap is available, a small chain could work, although you'd lose the ability to pre-load the process and need more jack travel. Never tried it.
I drilled a hole through the top 2x4 and down into the vertical one and dropped a 16 penny nail in it to help hold things in place. I don't see any big risk of injury by it cratering since there's not that much recoil energy stored in the tire during the process.
I did three 225R50x17" tires with it to replaced the tire pressure sensors... worked like a champ and provided plenty of access. I only needed to break the outside bead to get access so didn't need to re-balance them. It's best to break the bead opposite the valve stem first, before doing remaining areas to reduce chances of damaging those sensors (if you intend to reuse them). Thanks for the video... well done!

Tried it and works excellent. Good idea to double or triple the strap as I broke a strap when just wrapping it single. Excellent video. Thanks!

Man,I struggled, and struggled, broke one bead by hand with spoons but couldn’t get the other watched your video ,set up the jack and ,bingo! tires off.
your method works awesome.I’ll never struggle again, and you saved me a few bucks,I hated the thought of taking it in to the shop.Next tire change will be easy and take way less time.Thanks.

Speed Play Glad I could help. I had a problem with the 2x4 slipping/ creeping away from the edge of the rim on a few tires. If you put a spoon or pry bar under the 2x4 and push it in close the the rim it eliminates that problem.

Glad I could help. I've had a few stubborn ones where the 2x4 kept creeping away from the bead. When I get one like that I put a pry bar underneath the 2x4 and tap it in close to the rim. That usually does the trick. I would like to fab a steel end that is shaped to the rim for future use.

Fantastic! Great idea! Especially for bigger low profile tires. only thing I did different is I used a 2x6 (was all I had) and added another piece of wood across the underside of the rim to protect it from any possible damage. Thank You! Your idea was Much Easier and less chance of getting hurt or damaging something.

Very interesting. I want to replace some old sensors and going to give this a shot. I already had 1 sensor replaced at a local tire shop, the price was very reasonable, $5 for dismount/mount, $10 for computerized balance and $5 for new wheel weights so $21.30 w/tax for 1 wheel. But they got grease stains on my armrest and floor mat, I had to shampoo the floor mat is was filthy, then I couldn't even get the lug nuts off, ended up having to use a 4' piece of pipe over a 2' breaker bar and I'm not a weak guy. I don't trust anyone working on the car.

A heavy gage threaded rod with large nuts and washers can be substituted for the strap and hydraulic jack
Rest one 2x4 or 4x4 on tire butting the edge of tire rim, and place the other 2x4 or 4x4 on the opposite side of the tire, resting on the rim.
Tighten both 2x4 together like a clamp to break the bead.

This looks like THE way to go for sure and those who have watched the video then commented on their success makes it a no brainer. I have one question regarding the piece of 2x4 that you have standing vertically at the rear of the jack next to the handle. What is its purpose and what size should it be? It wasn't discussed during the video.
    Thanks!

    • @remanspecialist
      @remanspecialist  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That piece is the fulcrum point between the jack and the top 2x4. It should be pretty close to equal the length of the width of the tire. Its just held in place by the tension of the ratchet strap once you tighten it down.

    • @stevemclean5787
      @stevemclean5787 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thanks for the reply. As soon as I finished posting my comment, I went out to the garage and as I started to configure the "machine", the vertical piece became apparent. I had it all assembled and the tire broke down far enough to access the valve stem in less than 5 mins.
Thanks for posting this. As others have already stated, GENIUS!

I just can't tell how you have the bottom of the Jack setup against the rim.
The part of the jack that normally is touching the car to lift it up is on the "edge" of the rim?

Busted down my old 4 lug
    Ranchero wheels today
    Wire wheeled
    Ready for primered
I used a variation of this method
With the assistance of my burk bar
I'm considering a bead breaking pipe cemented into
    A 4 foot ×four foot pad
A sort of a hitching post
    Bead breaking station
That was one hell of a workout doing it on the garage apron
Was comparable to wrestling with a alligator

I used a 4x4, a short piece of 2x4 and a heavy trailer. Tire on concrete, put 4x4 used as a lever and press 2x4 down onto tire bead. Trailer acts as the fulcrum pivot. Can also use a heavy sledge hammer to assist popping bead down off rim edge as you put pressure on tire bead.

Drive over the edge of the tire with your car. You can put a 2 x 4 on the tire if you want and drive over the 2 x 4, be careful of the valve stem..
You can also break the tire from the bead in a vice.
we can also do it with a large enough C clamp
I have seen it done using a motorcycle side stand. With the tire on the ground beside the motorcycle, position in the side stand on the tire right next to the rim, and leaned the motorcycle over onto the tire with the stand in the right position
I bought the $49 harbor freight tire machine. It has one of the best bead breakers out there.

I didn't have any luck - the 2x4 eventually always starts sliding down the sidewall of the tire and is no longer close to the bead and just squashes the tyre, and probably wrecking the sidewall. I will admit it was a more promising method than just the jack stand against the rubber tho

strap or mechanism might brake under this big pressure and be thrown or lash out so standing so near is hardly wise.bigger strap or rope is stronger or chain maybe joined with bolts or ..soapy water outside and inside first might help slip bead off and one guy beat on wood with sledge to help.

@@budrig had my collection of wheels taken by tire shop, I paid 5 bucks each instead of separating them myself. I was just gonna throw em away, but you can't throw tires and rims together in my country.
