    Help! anyone here experience when LED just turn off suddenly? everything is working as it is but after around 20-30 mins it it turn off but in the ambibox settings, it is connected and backlit is checked.
    My troubleshoot is always to close the program and unplug/plug the usb to my pc then opening ambibox. After than everything is back to normal. I think it goes to sleep. I cant find any settings about the lights going to sleep.

    Nice guide, thank you. For the record, the "Windows 8" screen capture method works for me with less of a CPU impact than "GDI FS Aero". Also, I had to play with the number of zones to get my knockoff Ambilight from Aliexpress to work. Mine has 60 LEDs but wouldn't work properly until I set it to 20 zones, and switched the color order to RBG.

    I bought this product hoping to use it on my TV (not as a monitor for my computer) am I able to download and set up the software, change the necessary settings using my computer, and then plug into my tv?

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This requires a computer to be the source of what is on the screen. The boxes that come in the LightBox kits are powerful enough to control the LEDs but they can't monitor what's on your TV.
      It will not work with a smart TV's built-in apps or other HDMI devices like consoles and streaming sticks like Roku, Fire, or AppleTV. The later point is mostly true, and while you can technically do it the cost would make it less than optimal.
      If you don't want to use a computer to play your content than there are alternative options that don't use AmbiBox. I call them 'pass-through' and 'screen view'.
      'Pass-through' solutions connect a mini-computer like a Pi or an Arduino between the device (PS4, Roku, etc.) and your TV. The most popular consumer version of this is the Hue Play system. It looks amazing, and is priced like it. There used to be more consumer options in this category, but they seem to be perpetually out of stock. I have plans to do videos on these options. You can build it yourself, but one of the issues right now is that most DIY options sacrifice audio quality, screen video quality, or cost as much as the consumer solutions.
      Govee has a product coming that might work. I cal lit 'screen view' because it uses a camera pointed at the TV. Issue is, they won't anyone pre-order it. If people message them I telling them about this channel maybe we can get them to sent out review units or something. I would be happy to make a video showing how it works and what uses cases it would be best for. Their facebook is: facebook.com/Govee.smarthome/

Money wasted for what I wanted, but lesson learned!

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because I don't have one, I always forget about Android. There is an Android TV streaming Box app ( play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sevson.androidambiapp&hl=en_US ) that claims to work. I don't have one of these devices so I not purchased the software, and therefore never played with the software either. The reviews are polar, with mostly 1 and 5 stars - which leads me to think that that either only some hardware works or some content. Netflix is known for having issues with DIY Ambilight. Then there is the issue of having to power both video playback and the lights which might be asking a lot of some of the lower end android boxes. Finally, 4K and HDR was an issue for the DIY community for some time and maybe (again I don't know) this software still has some issues.
      I want to do a video about these options, but I am not sure what Android devices to work with that would be the most help for people exploring it as an option.
      Hue I have much more experience with. It's A solution but not THE solution. For one, at least for now, has a hard limit of 10 lights. And, yeah, the bulbs cost $45 to $60 each. They were just updated to gen 3, so it's unlikely to see huge sales on them, but if you find a store with the now discontinued gen 2 bulbs they are often far cheaper. The big difference between gen 2 and 3 is that gen 3 can be controlled by Bluetooth or WiFi and generation 2 can only be controlled by WiFi. Oh, and how they show the color blue is a slightly different hue. (Only an issue for people mixing generation 2 and 3 in the same room). I have a 4 bulb demo that you can see here ( th-cam.com/video/7Nrj2xZ3seg/w-d-xo.html ) and I have a comparison of PC controlled options here ( th-cam.com/video/3_ExIUGhxFI/w-d-xo.html ). I realize it's not exactly what you want to do, but it will give you an idea of how it would look if you went that way. If you did do hue you have to add another $200 to $250 for the HDMI controller box.
      This is why I am being so pushy about expressing my interest in that GOVEE option I mentioned before. It has the possibility of being a TV option that falls between the AmbiBox price and the Hue Play price. It's also the only option so far that will likely support SmartTV content in addition to content that comes from an HDMI device. However, I question it's ability to handle fast moving action scenes.
      As far as this device - if you have a monitor for a windows, mac, or linux computer you can get it up and running for no more than what you already paid. And it works well for reducing eye strain if you do a bit of work on a computer screen - especially at night.

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a few issues you might be having. First, I made a new video (th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html) that goes into more detail but is also a better at showing the software panel. Check that out, and I will use that video for timestamps here. As far as your question:
      1. There could be a hardware issue with the strips themselves, but we can rule out other things first.
      2. Check and make sure the number of zones is set to your number of LEDs on your strip (th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html?t=540)
      3. Set the profile to a solid color (th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html?t=770). If this works try step 4, else go to step 5.
      4. Check that each individual LED is set to on, as indicated by a checkmark in the on screen box. (th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html?t=1509)
      5. Now it's worth troubleshooting hardware as this step won't help us unless the software was set up correctly. Check the connection of the RGB strip. It's easy for the L brackets to be slightly off and not connect. Open the bracket and reset it. If it still doesn't work try swapping the L bracket, to see if the L bracket is the issues. If this doesn't work then then try swapping the second strip with another strip in your setup. If it really is a bad LED, this should allow it to work.
      6. Let me know where the issue resolved, or if it didn't.
      Good luck!

    • @ImNandoxDG
      @ImNandoxDG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sixty-six Hi!, thanks a lot for your answer, i tried each step, and in the end i found the issue, tested each strip and all LEDs lighted ON, the L shaped connectors aren't as good as they should, they don't do a perfect contact so the power is not correctly transfer to the next strip, i'll buy a tin soldering iron and weld them to correct this problem. I still have a doubt with this, if we number each strip from the power source to the final LED 1-2-3-4, i tried strip 1 with 3-4 with a white color, and 3-4 lighten up in white color as number 1, but when i did the same with strip 2 it light up with an rgb pattern, each led flashing in different colors, and all blinking changing the color, they never stayed in white, maybe this strip was damaged?, maybe a shortcircuit produced by the faulty connection of the L connector?, again, thanks for your time to answer.

      @@jgracing627 If you want the lights to change based on what is on the screen, from what I know, you need either a windows or mac computer which plays the content or you need an android streaming box that can install third party apps and again it has to be the source of the content. If you want something that can work with a console (Xbox, PS, etc.) than your best options are either a complete DIY with an Arduino, a Hue Play box, or a lightberry. The lightberry is really hard to get right now and the Hue Play is $200-240 for the box and then about $200-250 for a light strip that does sides and top (no bottom) or play bars that make each side of the screen the most prominent color at about $120-$150 per 2 bars. All in USD, and all way expensive. I have a video ( th-cam.com/video/3_ExIUGhxFI/w-d-xo.html ) where I talk about it. It's good, but pricy. Can you add more extra bulbs to the ambibox?

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It relies on LED strips. You can add more led's so long as your power supply can handle it and the new led's are the same format. They have to be strung as one continuous strand of LEDs. You can disable some leds and you can make space by adding wires to move the strips. If you want to have a lot of lights in different places I would suggest either Hue with entertainment zones (limited to 10 sets of lights) or corsair branded products which don't appear to have an upper limit.

      XBMC, Kodi, and Mediaportal are entertainment front ends. They make looking for TV and movies on your own hard drive easier and more attractive. These plugins just ensure the lights are compatible with content played via these programs. The plugins are optional if you don't use the programs.

      @@JaredCondie Unfortunately, AmbiBox doesn't save your profile in a way that you can do screen capture lighting without the computer. With AmbiBox you would need your computer hooked up to the TV via HDMI and running both the AmbiBox software and the content (movie/game/music).
      TV USB ports are pretty limited. They can power static RGB lights (or ones that have a controller that let you change the color with a remote) and are generally only able to provide about 5w of power. They can also read documents, pictures, music, and or videos from from a thumb drive, or in some cases let you use a keyboard.
      Possible Solution for SmartTVs: There may be a way to do AmbiLight on a SmartTV. Govee has a product that should be available on August 15th which might provide good enough AmbiLighting solution for Smart TVs via downward facing camera without a computer. This strip behind the TV and Hue Play and Hue Bulbs in other parts of the room. This works out well because Hue Play Entertainment zones are limited to 10 lights total and this frees up spots for a more immersive lighting experience. The only issue is that due to lack of HDR on this model of their strip but HDR support on the Hue Play the colors don't match unless you watch SDR. Why is it not possible to move the LED setup up and down the screen? I always watch movies on a typical cinema resolution screen with two black stripes (the one at the bottom being wider then the one at the top for the subtitles). Is there a back around to this option?

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure I understand what you are asking. I have not found a way to set the zones off center without manually placing them. If the content is centered on screen, but there are black bars due to aspect ratio of the film you could either attempt to crop the frame to remove the black bars from the screen or you could set a profile in AmbiBox and name it something so you can swap to it when you play content of that aspect ratio.
      Option 1: If you are using the VLC media player tapping 'C' applies various crops to the playing video. You need to do this each time you play it.
      Option 2: If you prefer having the bars on screen than AmbiBox has a aspect ratio option in the (more settings> show areas of capture > wizard capture zone > aspect ratio drop down menu item) option. I would suggest playing the movie, pausing it and ALT-TAB to the Ambibox settings so that you can make adjustments while the film is still on screen.
      Let me know if that works for you.

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. You can overlap zones, but you have to do them manually by moving and resizing the zones. In your case you would need to stack 10 zones on top of each other, and you would have 12 zones total with some zones have more than 10 or one zone having 7 LEDs. Some people have reported that individual zones are distracting to them, so grouped zones might be a compromise between individual LEDs and total color average. It's worth exploring.

      However you want to mix it up. You could also do 11 LEDs on some of them. Unfortunately, while it's totally doable, there isn't an easy way to automate the task. This device has the ability to control and change the color of LEDs, but it doesn't have the ability to capture the screen or figure out what colors the LEDs should be.
      It was designed to run on a PC which is also playing the games, movies, or music as well. There is an option to use an Android TV streaming box or some smart TVs using this program: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sevson.androidambiapp . I do not have an android TV or Android streaming box so I have yet to test it, but from what I have read it doesn't work with live TV or any service that has protected content (Netflix, TH-cam, etc.). This appears to be a limitation imposed by the android app, so it might work with unofficial apps that don't impose DRM copy protection. It should work fine with apps like VLC.
      If you are looking for a way to do ambilight from another HDMI device, say a PlayStation or XBox, than you can either do a Lightberry (hard to find), a Hue Play option (more expensive), or a questionably available and questionably performing Govee option that uses a camera pointed at your TV.

      They capture the part of the screen that is assigned for capture. So if there are bars you will light up the color of the bar. Unless it's black in which case they are off. I have different aspect ratios set up in the profile section to allow me to quickly change the bias lighting to fit the content. The easiest way to do it is to start a video with the aspect ratio you want to map and ALT-TAB to the AmbiBox application and then start the configuration. Doing this leave the movie up and you can adjust the zones as needed.

      Once everything is set up, select 'Color Music' and choose your sound device. For me the Default Audio Device is best because it follows the windows audio device thus allowing me to switch between speakers and headphones as I would on the task bar. The sound level bar to the right of the black box in the center of the screen lets you customize the rate in which color changes occur. Farther right increases the speed while left slows it down. Make sure you choose save settings on the bottom of ambibox to secure the new settings. See my other video for other instruction about setting different profiles and configuring your preferred music player to automatically switch to music mode when the active application.

      As of now there is no TV, except for the AmbiLight TV's by Philips that will work with smart TVs apps. The way this idea is implemented requires either an Android device or a Window's, Mac, or Linux PC to be the source of the content. Alternative solutions, like the Hue Play and LightBerry exist, but they still require the source of content be something via HDMI. So you can do this on a smart TV, but you wouldn't be able to use apps built into your TV.

    did anybody manage to have a white backlight for a white monitor screen. On my installation, I get a light purple instead.

      I appreciate that I don't know exactly what hardware you have, so off the top of my head I can think of one cause for your problem. I am curious if you are getting an artifact where the power supply is unable to provide enough juice to the RGB lights. Typically this manifests as some lights being turned off, but you could have insufficient power by the power brick when trying to produce white and instead of turning some of the lights off you actually end up making an unexpected color. Unless you are using RGBW strips white light is produced by lighting up all three RGB lights. This can put a strain on your power supply. Check out the video I made where I talk about the lights turning off (th-cam.com/video/VSiQ4impJJY/w-d-xo.html) and let us know when happens. If it is only turning purple when the brightness reaches a certain point than you may need to replace your power supply or avoid all white back lighting.
      I am really curious what you find, so keep us updated.

      @@sixty-six Thank you for answering my question. My understanding is that in order to have a real white, you need a white LED. Producing a white color out of the 3 other colors is always approximation. I'm interested to know how approximative. I bought my system on Ebay from a Chinese seller but the solution looks like the one from this seller on Amazon:smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07P5MDD2W/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      In the last picture, there is quarter of the screen that is white and the backlight is also light purple. For length like 5 meters, I heard of cases where the power supply is not powerful enough. But my product is only 2 meters long with 60 LEDs. By the way, your link does not go anywhere for me. I played with the settings in the "Additional configuring of zones" tab. I got the best result of reproduction of colors besides white by setting General brightness and Brightness to maximum, Saturation to maximum, Hue to minimum, Gamma correction to minimum Minimum light to minimum

      @sixty-six  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm. Does applying mild pressure on the strip between different rgb lights change the color or the length of the incorrect color? I wonder if it’s a bad wire internally.

    • @VuHien2011
      @VuHien2011 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sixty-six I did not see a difference. So you say, your LED strip produces a perfect white without a white LED? by the way, I just realize referred to the same Amazon seller than you. LOL! So, you can see in his example, the white is also light purple...

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I understand what you are saying now. When I set my stip to static white I get good representation of white. Not a perfect white, no but it's close enough that I would call it white. I think my white is better than the white in the photo, though I suspect that is because the seller was more focused on showing the vivid colors and was willing to sacrifice the white to do it. From a marketing perspective it would have made more sense to just pick a different color.
      That said, when I use the dynamic lighting feature there is some bleed between the color it was and the color it is transitioning to. Typically I don't notice it, but watching a recording of the white color I do. Second 14 of this video (th-cam.com/video/vmgK95NeRAY/w-d-xo.html) shows a white screen within a flash between two purple scenes. It appears similar to how you described. I can improve this a little by increasing the 'Max FPS' on the profile page, however it still takes about half a second to a second of having the white on screen for the lights to adjust to whatever 'their white' color is actually called.
      I was reading your previous comments as if it was displaying solid purple when you set it to white, but now I feel like you are saying you are unsatisfied with the presence of a purple tint within your white. Is a fair representation of your issue? If so, I think it's a valid complaint with RGB strips and there may be some things you can do (higher refresh rates and different content) but without a RGBW strip I don't think you are going to get that perfect white you want.

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There can be a few reasons for that. a few possibilities.
      1. Hardware connection issue.
      2. The software doesn't find the lights on the COM port selected.
      3. The number of zones is 0 (so no LEDs are selected).
      4. The mode selected has some error. Try placing it in 'Static Background' and checking with a Red, Blue, or Green color. I have seen some lights default to black (AKA off) for some reason.
      5. Check the 'Show Areas of Capture' setting as you may have everything correct but the zone capture areas are all turned off. You should see a check box in each zone and they should have some color assigned to them. If you don't you might need to enlarge the zone (click and drag a corner).
      Let me know if any of those helped or if it's still having issues.

    Thought I'd leave a comment here seeing as how you seem to be really helpful in these comments :)
    I have setup my Ambibox (1M, 30LED) and everything says connected. However, my lights aren't changing from the colours they were when I first powered them on, even if I try using static colour mode. They also don't work with anything else, e.g on/off controls.
    I also tried Prismatik (both the official and unofficial builds) and that, similarly, connected but did nothing. I'm at a loss for what to do and was wondering if you have any ideas.

    • @sixty-six
      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have three questions to start.
      1. What color are the LEDs stuck as?
      2. Do you know if they RGB or RGBW LEDs?
      3. What device do you have selected? (See th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html) for how to see your selected device. Try running through each of these options to see if your controller is seeking something different.
      Let me know how it goes.

      @@sixty-six 1. LEDs are a combination of green/blue/off (not necessarily in that order)
      2. I believe they are just RGB

      Oh. So they are not all one color.
      Is this a Lightbox kit or a homemade DIY solution? Did you solder the LED strips or are you perhaps using an L bracket to connect cut pieces?
      Take a look at the option in Ambibox just above the COM port. In the link I provided I have mine set to Adalight. Try each of those device options to see if it changes anything.

      @sixty-six  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I have new tutorial that shows how you can adjust the max FPS (th-cam.com/video/g22SV34mIz0/w-d-xo.html). Keep in mind this is MAX FPS not set FPS. This means it isn't going to go up because you told it to, but it will possibly stop it from going up if you throttle it. It is influenced by CPU availability, and on my current i7 I see AmbiBox uses about 7 to 10% CPU utilization at idle when set to 60 FPS.

    Seems that Baud rate is software limited to 115200 bauds too low If you have more than 60 leds connected and want to get a good FPS rate. It's possible reflash this unit (seems to be an arduino uno chinese board) and change baud rate to some like 1Million (seems hardware support up to 2M baud rate). With FastLED library, Adalight-FastLed github.com/dmadison/Adalight-FastLED and Arduino App to re-programe device may be would be possible achieve more baud rate. Somebody has tested it? Wich is correct PIN_DATA number (maybe 8)...

    hi, nice explained. but this is on a PC i think but should be the same on a android beelink TG king BOX and i read some reviews that is works fine.. but not mine.i have hooked it up according instructions but noting happens no light .. nothing not even ones.
    so the instructions tells also that most off the things we like to watch whit this light are regular channels and movies .. but also not going to work. only content that is not protected that not allows this light to be used ??? than why the hell they made ambilihgt if we can only use it on games as i heart...anyway....
    made an mistake to buy this shit.. because it is still not working . so i need some information step by step to when the light start burning on what for step.. as i understand the ambilight software installed on my beelink box, it says led strip connected,and have those 3 options for instance simple color mode, and when i hit this button.. it lights up.. but the leds are not.. should the LED LIGHTS also light up ? because that kind of information is nowhere to find .
    if somebody has and android tv and knows the steps il sure would appreciate it.

      I am sorry. I don't have an android device to explore this sort of setup.
      Depending upon the application you are running the software may not allow overlays. This is true for some video programs and for some games. So far the software I use hasn't had this limitation, but I have heard others discuss it. The playclaw software that is bundled with AmbiBox seems to work for some people who have this issue, but this is Windows software and I am not sure what the android equivalent would be.
      I am sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but without an android device I have no way to explore a solution that might work for you. If you find one let us all know.

      @@ChrisLaw84 Have you tried Prismatik yet? I have a video here ( th-cam.com/video/E2IyTD1lADM/w-d-xo.html ). If not I would recommend the following. Make note of what COM port the box is plugged in (it's the one that makes it connected in AmbiBox) and don't move the USB port as Prismatik's setup process won't tell you if you picked the right com port. Quit AmbiBox completely (including the system tray), install your version of Prismatik which is in the description of the video I linked. I prefer the unofficial built, as it is technically newer and it tends to have better performance. Be careful when setting up the lights as the software has changed a little since I made the video. I think the top option, for 500 LEDs, is no longer Adalight, which is what most lightboxes use. You will most likely need the second from the top, but pick what is appropriate. If setup doesn't work you can get back to it in the Device tab under 'run configuration wizard.'
