Right on!!!! Whenever getting a new animal, we recommend asking other breeders, understand what they do/what their requirements are in nature, then decide for yourself. Perfect. Great job!
Hey i'm quite new to the channel so sorry if these questions have been addressed before but i have two questions: Where did you buy your savvy and is it captive bred? I ask this because i'm also in the uk so just wondering where i could find a captive bred one if yours is captive bred and i was right in assuming you are in the uk, thanks! :) Great channel, love how you're informing us on the right way to care for these amazing creatures. Creators like you are some of the best.
My 4 yr old male likes thawed frozen shrimp, raw whole organic eggs, nightcrawlers, mussels and adult male dubia roaches. Absolutely no rodents! Never even had any rodent. I fear that I feed him too much. That's one handsome monitor! My boy is very handsome too. Would love to know which snails and where to find! My boy is at 4' long now. Thank you for this informative video!!! All information here is so useful!
I believe people recommend lean meats and eggs because savannah monitors are also opportunistic eaters and will scavenge burrows for eggs and carcasses for leftovers. But seeing as insects are more frequent in their natural habitat they consume more insects than meats or eggs.
I agree I only give mine treats like that a few months out of the year Once or twice in a month. Usually turkey and chicken eggs since that’s what I have available on a regular basis
Thank you for the great information I just got a baby Savannah monitor he is three weeks old the pet store told me all wrong thank you for all the help I have been doing research like crazy and you’re channel helps me so much with what to feed him and such thank you!!!
I’m feeding my monitor raw chicken, and rat pinkies. I got him as a rescue and he was severely emancipated, he’s put on some weight but still has a lot to go.
Hello mate I am a experienced reptile Keeper from spiders to lots of snakes and different lizards. I like and watch you vids . I am thinking of getting a Bosc monitor. There size is not a problem but I have a huge viv . What’s worrying me is all the different information on lighting. Do you think the solar glow bulbs are good enough they have heat uva and uvb in one bulb. I have used them on my Toirtiois’s for years and had no problems. The one I use is 160 watts and gives a basking temp or 33 degrees at 18 inch high . I know I could lower this for a Bosc to achieve the temps you recommended. Or maybe use two of them when the Bosc is lager so the basking spot is not on one part of his body . Regards Ben .
Is there a feeding chart for Savannah Monitors? I haven’t come across any. For example, I’m feeding my sav medium crickets and super worms pretty much daily. How many should I be feeding it?
Great video, just wondering about the vitamin d3 over dose you said not to worry about because they only feed 2/3 times a week when adults. But how about when they're young and they're feeding more often? Do you still coat every insect in calcium? I'm doing my research because il be getting one very soon 👍 new subscriber love the tips.
I would love to see one built also. I have an idea of mine, going to be starting asap. But hoping someone with knowledge puts out a detailed vid on how to go about it.
Mine isn’t fussed with roaches at all so have a load of them and nothing to do with them luckily the small ones my frogs and crested geckos eat but the adults I’m stuck with
How many insects do you feed him each feeding, if you feed him 3 days a week? I’m set on getting a savannah monitor and I’ve watched all your videos about savannah monitors along with reading everything I can. And you say how important the diet is along with how much you feed. Around how much do you feed your size sav? Thanks
Vary it all the time. Some days he will get small meals if he's being lazy. If he is dead energetic and burning loads of calories I'll feed him a bit more. I just keep an eye on his weight. Sometimes he will get 15 but sometimes 25
Grasshoppers /locusts & snails , worms , roaches are very good for them. Every once in awhile I throw mine a few quail eggs as a treat as they do raid nests and eat eggs in wild
I try to stick with only live insects, mealworms, loads of crickets, superworms, occasional wax, silk and hornworms. However I do feed 2 quail eggs once a week and he loves them. Prior to us taking him in he was living on wet dog food and dried mealworms.
It varies. Closer to plants it's more Cyprus mulch and peat moss to help plant growth but closer to the hot spot it's more topsoil and sand to substain the burrows better and stronger
Depends on there size. Also there enclosure size . How much exersize they get ect. Best to weigh him at weekly intervals. If no or slow weight gain then increase food.
Do any keepers out there have experience actually feeding savannah monitors millipedes. I know millipedes make up a large portion of their diet as adults in the wild, and I know that millipedes can be poisonous. I was wondering if anyone had more details on what types of millipedes to feed and how/when to introduce them to their diet or if everyone just avoids them completely?
My savannah monitor is a big boy. He’s only 7month old and he’s just under 3 foot. I’m surprised he was so small when I got him I’d give him like 100 crickets a week so that way he can just eat them throughout the week and he sorta shares some food with my bearded dragon (super worms, crickets grasshoppers and Dubai roaches) my savannah monitor has just started with live adult mice. And we found out that is his favorite. But sorta sucks because I’ve heard rodents aren’t really good for them. Sooo mice are a special treat for him
Its so bad with care that I even seen someone on youtube say they dont need uvb. People try to over feed them to make them grow faster as well and I think that might be one of the worst care habits.
There is so much bad advice out there. That's the soul reason I started this channel. And that times are moving on. New info is always turning up. New scientific knowledge .
Sorry but Wikipedia isn’t the best source. It said “mainly” too. A mouse once or twice a month would be fine and if anything good because of the calcium. You didn’t even show the “diet” tab. The problem isn’t feeding them mice it’s over feeding them mice. In the wild they’ll eat pretty much anything smaller than them.
Thanks a lot for the quick answer! My goal is to raise my sav to be as healthy and happy as yours! I’m doing the live feeder Dubia, and kingworm breeding. I watched all your videos on live breeding, so I think I’m very prepared! After watching tons of your videos yesterday I subscribed. Thanks for taking care of your viewers! Keep doing what your doing!

I got my Savannah a few weeks back. 3 month old female (was sexed at pet shop). I feed her mainly silkworms and dubia roaches. There's a debate on which is healthier, Dubai's have a little more protein, silkworms have more calcium. I think silkworms are the most nutritious because they're extremely easy for the animal to digest. However, I still use both as a main staple diet. While she's still young, I include cut up hornworms twice a week because they're good at keeping weight up while they're growing, they're just fattier than silkworms so I don't use them as often. On the mornings I feed the hornworms, I follow that evening by feeding boiled egg whites that get cut to size. Once a week I offer a meat item lean fish or a chicken heart. When it grows, I'll use day old chicks here and there because they're more lean than mammals, but I won't feed rodents. In my opinion I've seen too many bloated, unhealthy looking monitors when the owners use primarily rodents. My monitor is housed at 125 degrees in the basking area, and 85 degrees on the cool side, with about 40-50% humidity in the enclosure. In the 70's at night. I'm proud to say she's one of the healthiest monitors I've seen. Doesn't get stomach bloat, just grows like crazy. I think the key is a high calcium, high protein, low fat, easily digestible diet with plenty of variety.
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS yes, I feed my silkworms strictly mulberry and mulberry chow. Otherwise they may become toxic to the monitor. Hornworms only eat hornworm chow. I don't give calcium, but I do dust with vitamins. My feeders are very high in calcium, so supplementing it isn't necessary in my case 😁
Do you want the hides they were around 12 quid online which I thought was expensive and a small log with a few other bits. Do you want them, including postage, £20 but if you want a smaller price then let me know!
Feed them with the shell intact, they are an excellent addition to the captive diet (freshwater types when possible) if saltwater offer less frequently, because it`s possible the species does not have salt secreting glands.

Quick question, for a baby Savannah Monitor would you recommend calcium dust without d3 since you're feeding more frequently or no?
Without d3 if you have correct uvb lighting in the encoloaure
