My Savannah monitor has been incredible from the very start. He has never been defensive or aggressive and instead loves to come out for a cuddle, running straight to me whenever he sees me. He also really loves a bath and a swim and knows the difference between my hand and fingers and his food. I have taught him that he gets food outside of the vivarium, where I am also able to give him more enrichment and space to chase his food. When I bought him, he was in an enclosure with his brothers and sisters where he ruled and chased the rest underground. He seemed aggressive because of that at first but when he ran straight up to me to investigate, acting super friendly, I knew I had to take him home with me. He is growing steadily and is as friendly as ever. I love him very dearly.

I've seen vids where ppl actually play with them like with dogs.
Like rope pulling, tug war and other toys, even alligators play with toys believe it or not.
Snake Discovery rescued a alligator and they bought her toys, they put a camera in to spy on her and she death rolled these toys, just playing with it having a ball.
As soon as ppl come inside she stops playing lol 😆 😂 🤣
But yeah savanna monitors love to play tug games with you if you get a dog toy with ropes you both can have some fun and they actually death roll too lol 😆

I have an 18 month old Sav called Drax, I click my fingers when I feed him and often “fist” trained him, he tried to tail whip me once, he was about 2 months old and tiny, it was hilarious. If I open his enclosure he climbs out goes outside into the garden, spends up to an hour running around, going to the toilet then comes back into the house and climbs back to find his hot spot. I let him climb on me and sit but have had to buy “anti slash” sleeves from Amazon as his claws are are like razors 😂

Hi...love 💕 your approach on handling Hugo....mine is just turned 3 years in May. She is a wild hatched Savannah. She was a piece of work..only a tiny thing when I got her. Three years later she owns my apartment....she sleeps in my bed and her hide when she wants darkness. She has not tail whipped or bitten in two years this coming month( July). She is about 2&1/2 feet long..but still growing.a big ol baby. Handling is the secret for having an affectionate lizard. If you go on TH-cam she has videos under Mizz Chapo Savannah Monitor. The best video is her chasing gold fish in her water bowl....hilarious 😂. Talk more another time.

I currently have five savanna monitors, and they all have different personalities, one of them loves to snuggle, while another one is just straight up, aggressive. I love savanna monitors so much not just because they’re super smart but because they’re also kind of dumb at times.

Years and years back I was given an "Aggresive and bitey" sav that only ever bit me twice due to my own dumb mistakes. She was a total teddy bear. She was such a teddy bear that when hand-feeding her (do not recommend unless you 100% trust your animal and don't mind being bit. Moreso the 2nd part.) If she missed the mouse and got my finger she could tell the difference and would let go of my thumb/index finger and readjust onto the mouse.
Personall,y I think I just got lucky af with that Lizards. She was THE BEST girl ever

He's about 7 months old and growing like a weed lol. On a positive note the vet said he's the best mannered monitor she's ever worked with lol. He's a good boy. Love seeing Hugo! SV-R PREDATOR FAM watch his videos on his second channel northern exotics 2 the Savannah monitor care series is phenomenal, but as far as my personal advice a lot of people say you need deep substrate everywhere, but realistically you just need part of the enclosure with deep substrate to give him the ability to dig and burrow. In my opinion that’s one of the best tips I can give you on husbandry otherwise you’ll spend a lot of money on substrate and the enclosure will be incredibly heavy. As far as training just patience, and reading your animal, tong feeding is great to associate you as a positive influence by providing food, and getting rid of the need to hunt which in return tames ‘em down by getting rid of the instinct to hunt. Good luck partner

I have a year and half old savannah monitor, was very friendly when I first got him, and now he's very aggressive. I have changed his diet from eating live mice to eating cockroaches, hornworms, mealworms, thawed frozen mice occasionally raw steak or fish before I ad the seasonings. He's gotten a little bit better but will still go for your hands any chance he can what do you recomend I do? He's in a 6foot long by 2 and half feet wide terrarium. Basically a dresser stripped down and remade into a terrarium.

I agree your way to tame. I never related food to me. I didn't touch his food. I did once and he would not eat the mice. I realized my mistake and never did it again. Nothing like naps together on the couch. I would let him go with me everywhere. When he was small he stayed in my pocket when he got big he stayed on my shoulder. You are so right about trust. It was like he hated everyone but me and the dog. He loved to sleep with dog.

I have been ball training my monitor. When she sees the blue ball she knows to touch her nose to it and then she gets food. It's working great and she is a juvenile. I have had her for 3 weeks. I have In my office e I work from home so she sees me all day. She was leary at first by the second week she would walk up to the enclosure door and then I just started opening it and ball Training with food.

Can you also use a clicker? Like a little metal strap with a dent in it and when you push in the dent it clicks and then pops back again.
I’m getting my ackie monitor in about a month and I would like to train him that way. When I click a few times I feed him. Do you think that will work?

Yeah food orientated doesn't cover it, mines called Audrey.. coz "FEED ME!!" I got mine as a baby and apart from the first couple of weeks to settle in where I didn't disturb too much, it's just about spending time with them. They are intelligent and definitely recognise routines/patterns in behaviour. I always click the tweezers together when it's feeding time he defo knows that's the dinner bell, no tweezers not feeding time it's come out if you want time. I'd recommend gettin the bites out the way while they're small, they can whip but that is usually after a warning hiss an chest puff-up coz your doin something they dont like, so that's your fault for not reading the body language, once mine had bit me a few times an realised it didn't really DO anything he doesn't bother with the bites anymore. Highly recommend anyone with one of these to breed your own dubia roaches as well!

How long should it take to gain the trust you have with your savannah. I bought mine last month at a reptile expo as a baby not even as big as my hand and it hates me. I’m trying to build that trust and be consistent with what I do. But even feeding time he attacks my hand. And attacks the tweezers I use to feed him.

Someone dumped a Savannah Monitor on my doorstep. Hissy little shit, damn they're loud. Still trying to figure out how to get him to eat. I have seen him basking but now he's run into his hide and won't come out. Luckily I have a decent sized enclosure I use for quarantining new reptiles but he'll need an upgrade next payday. Any ideas on how to get what looks like stuck shed off a savannah that isn't keen on being around people atm. Should I just wait until the next time he starts shedding? I've never had shedding issues with any of my reps so that's a new thing...and monitors...haven't had a lizard that big before. Left some crickets for him in his enclosure and will see if he will eat them in a few hours if he's not dealing with me hovering over him. I have seen him chilling in his water dish.

get mechanic gloves and force some.interaction. it'll take a few months until it stops biting and snapping. will his ls for a long time because you are messing with it. took mine almost 6nth before it stopped hissing...so much.
now it doesn't snap but runs away.
keep high moisture for shed problems and provide more enclosed rocks, sticks and such it can rub against.

@@FenrirYT13 No need to get defensive
"Too many rodents will make the. Over weight they can get fatty liver very easy." ^You literally just said the complete opposite of what your original comment said.
Also, nice appeal to authority. Don't believe everything somebody says just because they happen to be a perceived authority, there are plenty of Veterinarians who don't know about proper nutrition. Also, new information comes out DAILY on nutrition, it's hard for a Veterinarian to keep up, especially for animal species they don't see often. I'm saying this as a former Veterinary Assistant.
Again, always do your own research. And no, asking a random vet that one time you brought your lizard in a few years ago does not count as research. As Katie B said, Savannahs are mostly insectivores, you're spreading old information.
I didn't mean to throw shade at your previous comment, but it's okay to be wrong about something, nobody knows everything. I'm sure there's plenty I can learn from you on a variety of other subjects. Have a nice day.
