  • Squeals of excitement were definitely not in short supply on the day before spring break at Northport Elementary.
Students ran up to see actor and mentor Doc Shaw in the halls and on the basketball court. The actor, who has starred in the Disney Channel's "The Suite Life on Deck" and Tyler Perry's "House of Payne," adopted Northport Elementary as a mentor in Turnaround Arts, a signature program of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. He visited Northport Elementary for the second time Thursday, March 24.
"Every child needs opportunity to be successful and I truly believe if you have arts as well as athletics, as well as math, science, technology, you'll have a very well rounded child and they'll be successful in whatever they want to do," says Shaw.
Shaw spent time with students and showed off his basketball skills in a staff versus student game.
Principal Leona Derden says the school has worked to integrate arts into the classroom as part of the Turnaround Arts program.
"We're using visual thinking strategies and critical thinking by embedding the arts to increase rigor and understanding within reading and math," says Derden, who says the integration has helped with student performance and behavior.
Part of the activities included students involved in a video that will showcase the progress of schools like Northport.
"I want to show the President and the whole Turnaround Arts committee the whole process of turning around one of these amazing schools and showing what arts can do for kids here," says Shaw.
Schools in the Turnaround Arts program get access to expertise, support and materials from the Perpich Center as well as leading arts organizations and corporations such as Crayola, National Association of Music Merchants and Music Theater International. Each school receives around $25,000 in materials through the program, in addition to money provided by the state legislature.
