The Explorer 36mm is the perfect Rolex for people who like Rolex but don't want to show off. It's a Rolex that doesn't need to prove it's a Rolex. Very discreet watch no one will notice it. It's perfect for everyday use, classic size, and versatile for any occasion. Rolex is going with the smaller classic size watch trend with this Explorer. This really goes back to pre-1016's, especially with the bracelet taper. In a way, it's a more refined 36mm version of the Explorer. Very different from the awesome classic 1016 so there's no comparison. Many people like to compare the two, but not many people (including myself) will pay over $15K for a 1016 Explorer. Plus a good wearable example is difficult to find. I have a 7-inch wrist and it wears/looks perfect on me. It wears the same as a 14270 IMO. For someone that has a small wrist less than 6 3/4 it will wear perfect. If you have a wrist over 7 inches? This will look small (there's a 40mm and the older 39mm options you can't go wrong). For me it's my everyday watch, I will not sell it and I find myself wearing more than my other watches. As far as putting this on a strap? Yes the 19mm lug width is something I wish it was made with a 20mm lug width. BUT, 19mm is not much smaller than 20mm. Thankfully 19mm straps are easy to find these days. However, I strongly suggest you get a proper spring bar tool made for Rolex Oyster bracelets. You will have issues putting the bracelet back on with a basic spring bar tool. Also, the strap should be thin because it will rub against the case because of the lughole position. Personally, I prefer to wear my Explorer and old Submariner 14070M on the bracelet. If I want to wear a watch on leather/NATO/rubber straps, that's when I wear my Speedmaster Pro Moon watch.
Thanks for the review! I have the same wrist size like yours. Sold my 14270 to get this new 36mm version, and I've no regrets whatsoever. It really ticks all the boxes for me. I just love it so much and I will be passing it along to my family, and hopefully for generations to come.
Hey, I really appreciate your comment and am happy to hear that! It definitely is a piece to pass along, every detail is extremely refined and I can’t imagine collecting watches can become any better than this. However, I always try to find the flaws or possible drawbacks with any watch - just to give a different view to the majority of hyped up reviews out there - but with the newest Explorer it was extremely hard to find anything that might be annoying for potential buyers, it just is that good!
Interesting video. Strange that it never showed up when searching for the explorer here on TH-cam. I don't have large wrists (6.5") and my daily is the explorer 40, which in reality is under 39mm.
I think the algorithm is not my friend yet 😂 happy you found it anyways! cool to hear that the bigger explorer is also a good fit for you. My wrists are the same size so I should take a look at it as well I guess :)
@mowatches For our wrist size it really depends on the watch. I have a 40mm Grand Seiko that also fits really well. Mainly because it's very thin and also has a black dial.
i have a 224270. i love it and i wear it like it's supposed to be worn. for me, it's a Rolex and that makes it worth it. i think we sometimes overlook manufacturing technology when we think about the price. it's a feature hidden away within the walls of the company and we never get to see it. rounded spring bars! thanks so much for the tip! i hadn't even thought about it. i'll get some and finally put my Explorer on a NATO.
Hey, I appreciate your comment and really like your idea of the build quality inside and outside of the watch being the best feature invisible to the naked eye - could not agree more!
Luxury watch brands definitely do NOT have the highest profit margins with their stainless steel sports models like you claim at 6:30 in the video. Gold watches have a MUCH high profit margin, which is why brands like Patek intentionally limit how many steel models they make each year - they want to force people to jump up to the precious medal versions because they have such higher profit margins.
Hey, thanks for your comment and the clarification, I followed a discussion of people reasoning before making this claim, but what you say makes sense.
Check again, pretty sure there are three micro adjustment positions 😉 If you have any watches with part links I can probably help you to get those to fit you better too 😎
I have both the Explorer 1 and 36 mm and the sea dweller 43 mm. I think both are great watches that help present a different type of look. I love both watches. But it really depends on what you're trying to pull off.
I like the aesthetic of the Explorer, but I am all too happy with my Datejust with that complication! I'm considering getting an OP, but I am having trouble justifying the cost when there are so many great micro brands out there!
Hey, absolutely appreciate your comment! The DJ is absolutely phenomenal, which configuration do you have exactly? Christopher Ward also has amazing Everyday Watches and some nice Omega AT alternatives. What a time to be alive
@@mowatches Thanks! I have the 126200 with the sunburst blue dial, domed bezel and oyster bracelet. I have been eyeing the CW Dune in bronze with the green dial! Now that are both two very beautiful watches! Moonphase is a really cool complication, I have also been playing with the thought of getting one for my astronomy sessions haha
@@mowatches That's cool! What kind of gear do you use for astro? I have a ZWO AM5 that I use with a Canon mirrorless setup (400mm Lens) and a small guide scope.
I’m currently saving up for the Explorer. It’s my second favorite watch of all time after my Speedy. I got the new Speedy 2 years ago as an achievement piece. Now I’m saving up for the Explorer, which will take years. But I’m hopeful to get a 114270 and then maybe a few years after that, upgrade to the 124270 eventually.
Amazing, thanks for your comment. It is really a good watch so save for and have on your wishlist for years, I can speak from experience here 😅 All the best for your watch journey!
My 39 is perfect for me. That said, it’s a do all watch but very under the radar. I prefer my milgaus for wearability but appreciate the quite nature of the explorer.
Love it. The modern 36mm variant felt too small on my 7.25” wrist so I traded for a neovintage sub that feels much more my size. Beautiful watch tho. Wish it suited me better.
Thanks for your comment, appreciate it! Bummer that it did not click, but the sub is such a cool piece as well, so definitely a genius trade you made, congrats!
I feel this watch and even this model with be appreciated more in the future as not much will change in the line ups. And this is as simple as it gets. So after we get everything we want from watches, then realise we had it in 2021 with this model…
love this comment, thanks a lot, couldn’t agree more with you. I feel that the newest model is the quintessential Explorer. It has vintage a charm and dimension but is technically optimized to its core. The numerals look fresh and still clean. It is as good as watchmaking can get.
I think it’s 35.5mm size is its greatest strength and why most people love this watch. They just don’t make watches in this size that often anymore and it’s a shame. Looks great on almost every wrist.
Nice review! A great looking watch for sure. I think the size, simplicity and lack of complications make it so compelling. Maybe I should get one someday... But for now I am very happy with my Black Bay 36, which is absolutely awesome. I don't know if the Rolex is worth the premium and I am seriously put off by the waiting list game (I am very imapatient - I even leave a supermarket when there are too many people 😂).
Hey, thanks for your amazing comment, I appreciate your perspective! It really is an incredible watch, but if you are genuinely happy with your BB36, I don’t think you need to get the Explorer - they are just too close and I am pretty sure only watch nerds like us would see the difference anyways 😂. Or you just put yourself on that list and whenever you get the call you can see where life took you and how you will decide then. Btw, I also thought a lot about the BB36 first, but that was a tad too close to my BB58, which is why I went for the Explorer in the end.
@mowatches Awesome! I'm also seriously considering the BB 54 (or maybe 58) - I don't have a good diver yet. Regarding the Explorer vs. BB36 - I have bought the BB36 in blue (which looks fantastic) so I could potentially justify to buy a similar type of watch in black :-) Maybe I'll try to get on a list, good idea.
I understand the point of this video, but I doubt anyone would consider buying an explorer if they had ANY of the concerns you listed, lol. To me, the points you raised are actually the reasons I love the explorer. (The 19mm width is a very valid point, though!😂) Have a good one.
Hey, thanks for your comment and I definitely agree - the video is not meant to be a criticism of the watch and rather about pointing the things that make it special, which some people addressed as reasons why they decided to part ways with it on reddit. Hey, thanks alot for your comment, appreciate it and can definitely understand your opinion. It really is an amazing watch and I love it a lot - just wanted to clarify and make people aware that it has a lot of character and is probably not everyones cup of tea.
100%. The 36 is for chicks. Why a man would wear a 36mm watch is beyond me. Maybe it was cool back in the old days. Not today. 40mm is the Goldilocks size for a man’s watch.
Brooo I love this watch, just said that there are many things some people might have different expectations of, so I wanted to clarify for them before buying it.
I agree, but also I get why people love their watches, almost every piece is iconic and has its own history. what would be your choice in order to stand out?
Interesting view and I totally get it. Those watches you mentioned are all beautiful and more bold and modern - however, for many enthusiasts there lies also a charme in the refined “classic” watches like Explorer or Datejust.
Absolutely agree, I am just saying that people with big wrists might want to check it out in person before they put their names on the list, because in fact on reddit many owners were surprised on how small it actually wears. Don‘t get me wrong, I love the small size a lot!
It was definitely iconic! Tbh I get your point with the nato, but I also understand that people want to make it “their“ explorer by personalizing the strap. Also, the watch definitely has some amazing tool and field watch vibes, which a plain khaki nato can feature quite well, for example.

IT WORKS FOR ME AND ONLY ME.
Clearly it's not for you.
Brooo I love this watch, just said that there are many things some people might have different expectations of, so I wanted to clarify for them before buying it.
You wanna be unique? Don't buy a Rolex. Almost everybody has a Rolex.
I agree, but also I get why people love their watches, almost every piece is iconic and has its own history. what would be your choice in order to stand out?
Genuine question, do you have one, and which model?
For me, the only beautiful rolex watches are submariner, seadweller and the GMT master lines... the rest is an old design for old people...
Interesting view and I totally get it. Those watches you mentioned are all beautiful and more bold and modern - however, for many enthusiasts there lies also a charme in the refined “classic” watches like Explorer or Datejust.
Too small? It’s supposed to be small…
Absolutely agree, I am just saying that people with big wrists might want to check it out in person before they put their names on the list, because in fact on reddit many owners were surprised on how small it actually wears. Don‘t get me wrong, I love the small size a lot!
The 1016 was a far better looking watch.
Why would you put this on a nato?? It just makes it look cheap and tacky.
It was definitely iconic! Tbh I get your point with the nato, but I also understand that people want to make it “their“ explorer by personalizing the strap. Also, the watch definitely has some amazing tool and field watch vibes, which a plain khaki nato can feature quite well, for example.
There is no Explorer 🧭 1
Explorer or Explorer II
Just mentioned;)
Thanks for the comment, good to know :)
