Sorry TH-camrs out there: for me this is the only decent Winter/Christmas video in this channel. No sleigh, no bells, no reindeers, no Santa. Just fun in the snow. Thanks for this short film and the Zastava 750 bonus footage! So long, take care --- Martin/Southern Germany

      I watch them almost religiously.
I did something similar like you did in this video with my 520d touring. The ‘only’ differences were that I did it at a lower speed and on a wider road 🤣. Still great fun.

Man it's CRAZY just how stable this thing is and how much you can "mess up" and it just doesn't slip out of control. I've been in some cars which absolutely baffled me with how bad they were on the road and how easy they were to spin out, even going slowly in a corner, or just going straight when the road is a bit wet. After that, I then understood why everyone driving them were going so damn slow whenever I saw them on the road and I wouldn't be mad at them anymore.

Back in the days I also drove my MR2 all winter in Canada. Since I always fitted nokian hakkapeliitta snow tires on my cars, the MR2 sailed through snow storms when many cars were stranded. Those were happy days with my mister 2.

This is a good idea on the camera angle. I'd love to do this when I get back into autocross. Also, I've always been a firm believer for doing so donuts and drifts in a very large empty parking lot after it snows to get a good feel for how your car behaves in slippery conditions.
Either way, those are beautiful roads!! Thank you for making this fantastic video. Great content as usual.

I drive my '87 in the snow every day I'm not working. Even did some christmas drifts in the parking lot that was finally empty across the street last night. These things are a BLAST in the snow, still responsive and handle better than most cars. Even with cheap snow tires these things are so much fun.

Stalls of beel right there! Epic opening drone shot. I've driven snowy dirt roads all my life, but I'm still afraid to go hard. Good news is, snow banks are like safety bumpers! As I have learned from many small mishaps. Bummer about the front bumper, but I'm so glad you dodged the doggo. Where you were driving looks largely similar to where I live. Someday, I promise you, my MR2 with its own crazy engine swap will be out attacking the snowy roads too. You may have to experiment with Scandi flicks and left foot braking next. Ahhh! I am so excited for the engine swap. Can't wait. Your friend in the green car is a drift legend. Last note, yes everything will one day rust away and we're all gonna die, so let's have some fun. Živjeli!

Love that you learned something on the tire width thing, I delivered snow blowers mid storm in various 2 wheel drive F 150's over a ten year period. Drove my lowered miata to work in a blizzard the other day while everyone with SUVs called out. The people who did show up all watched me do donuts and drift all over the lot, they all wanted to know how I pulled it off. I had to shovel through plow spill over at 2 intersections on my ride home though. I'm also never painting it white after honking my little meep meep horn in hopes the plows will spot me between the snow banks of equal height.

Happy New Year and best wishes from Greece! With less diseases...
Beautiful landscape, gorgeous red MR2, seems to have been designed in order to take corners as fast not as fun as it can be, I really didn't expect that! But physics of the weight distribution and overall geometry of the car combined with the engine's power proves it.
Also the little Zastava was a Gem seeing it do donuts! We had them here in Greece too...

Epic video , I recognized the Olympic sign you passed, i had a Canadian friend who competed in the 1984 winter Olympics, beautiful country you live in, i had 2 friends back in the early 80's i drove a Fiat X19 and the other a Gen 1 MR2 like yours and both were a hoot to ride in during the winters, the Fiat was easier to kick the rear end out, it was lighter than the MR2 and had bias ply tires on it and my buddy had gotten pretty good at doing this from having only the 1 car and drove it to the university of Manitoba for 5 years and it started very good at cold temperatures after a Fiat mechanic set up the webber on it with a manual choke that made a world of difference, they had terrible heat in them and you always had to wear a toque, gloves and long underwear in that car or you froze your ass off, we didn't care when we got to the bar we just drank more hard liquor for the cold ride home, his beliefs were like mine and yours , if you own it you drive no matter what time of year it is, life is too short drive it like you stole it, it more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow ❤️🎄

I owned a MK2 MR2 it was by far the best fun car I've ever driven in the snow. A bit of power or a bit of streering would make it oversteer or drift under full control. And when you didn't want that, the weight over the rear wheels gave it a surprising amount of traction - more than any other rear-wheel drive car I've driven. No tendency to loose control of the rear like so many cars do in the snow. That was just with standard summer tyres (not driving fast). It'd make quite a good winter car with proper snow tyres.

9:05 i love driving these cars because a little goes along way. When you lift of the throttle the weight aggressively shifts foward so any steering input is amplified tenfold. Lift off the throttle and tap the brake to turn into the corner, as soon as it turns in get back on the gas to shift the weight back. If the backend starts to come out don't change throttle input just gently turn into it, don't throw the wheel and lift. As you said any agressive input will upset the car

  • @timwintersoncntr
    @timwintersoncntr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Really difficult conditions; a nice, packed, cold, full coverage would have been ideal for evaluating techniques. I would recommend training in the use of left-foot braking. Moderate use of both power and brake can load the fronts for turn-in and stability as well as unloading the rears when some rotation is called for. It's a hard technique to master and must be practiced a lot.
    Merry Christmas!

Love the idea that “cars need to do FUN car stuff”! I also think your wheel/tire combo is perfect; you do not want to build an MR2 drift car. Great educational content; LOVEx3 the hands on content!!!
The problem(s) with winter daily driving, at least in the USA-mid-west (MSP; CHI, etc) is all the road SALT that destroys metal! (We call it the rust belt.)
If you were daily driving the MR2 on salt covered roads to commute, that would be needlessly destructive!
Having fun (in any weather) is great unless you’re taking about a car that only 100 or so of them are left on the planet (like a real cobra)! Keep having fun in your MR2!!

I'm glad I came across your channel.
I like how knowledgeable you are.
An I'm in total agreement with your outlook on vehicles. No trailer queens here.
I live in the states. State of Florida now days. I was born and raised in Michigan till I was 22. I've been in Florida for the past 22yrs.
So I do know about the snow driving.
I had a 82 dodge ramcharger when I was 18 and would drift it around corners and dirt back roads where I lived. I would take a normal 90° 4 way stop and drift my dodge while making the turn. Then I would see how long I could keep it going sideways before going in a ditch or having to straighten it back out. Fun times. Lol
A buddy borrowed the dodge to run to get something from the store and tried what I would do. He ended up in the ditch. I was about to walk and see what happened to him and my dodge. Here he co.es pulling up explaining what happened with a tractor pulling him out of the ditch. Lol
I just said no more drifting for you. Lol
Now days I have a gmc sierra 2500hd duramax 4x4 with a 8ft bed truck lifted 6in, pushing around 500-550hp. Its a beast.
I've not had a bunch of adventures yet with it but I've had to get some important mechanical stuff fixed first before the truck sees mud or anything close to snow now days. Lol
Which its getting closer. Its my work truck too. So I'm not trying to kill it either. Lol
I've rambled on long enough. But I have motor oil pumping through my veins too. Along with the love of vehicles in general.
Simple version of my background with vehicles. Most families have rings or clocks or some trinket for family heirlooms. My family has a 383 v8 for our heirloom.
Out of a drag race car my uncle and dad raced.
Dad worked at Chrysler and uncle (dads brother) worked at Ford. Both in Michigan about 40mi north of Detroit.
I'll definitely keep watching what you send out to the digital world. Thank you and always be safe.

You should try left foot braking, it’ll put more weight into the front so you can have better front grip, from there you give it a little gas and steering angle and it should kick out the rear, it also helps to be in a lower gear (1,2). Just be sure to not give it too much brake and make sure that you prepare for the massive oversteer and you should be good

    Hello,
    Completely agree to everything.
Snow walls are beginner drifter best friends. Softer than trees and walls, avoid to ruin the car at first mistake.
Driving on snow permits to slide at low speed, giving more time to experiment and understand what's going on.
Indeed, cars exists to be driven like cameras exists to make photographs, owning an item to own an item doesn't make any sense.
Indeed jumping on the breaks will only result with the car continuing straight where its weight led it.
Likely your best way to make it turn efficiently is to try rally style cornering (enter the corner, begin to turn the steering wheel then left foot braking without lifting the right foot from the throttle, then control the car while it is turning/sliding along the remaining of the corner)

Damn must be some care put into stopping that car rusting at least. I had one over 10 years ago and it was rusted to hell then. These cars are 35 odd years old now. I miss mine now I've seen this video.... Also D4A's one sounds utterly insane with the bike carb engines!

Oh my -- I'd never dare to run my MR2 at that speed in the snow -- but it is cool to see that the car can do it.

I've never driven on snow. That looks terrifying. The closest I've come is snow flakes hitting the road and instantly melting. It just doesn't get cold enough in most of Australia and I'm kinda glad :P

Very Nice area you drive in. To drive in snow with mid engine car need some experience. Look forward to see the underdog in the mr2 and see how it perform. Marry christmass to you and your family.

Do you have salt on the roads where you are?/How are winter roads treated in your region of the earth?
Where I am is an area un the USA called the Salt Belt. Named that because we use salt on out roads when it snows to help melt the snow and add traction. In the areas just south of the great lakes, the life span of a winter daily is about 10-13 years. After that, the chassis is basically all rusted away. I personally don't want to have to get a new car every 10 years, I'd rather just have a few really fun cars and take care of them and keep them as long as I can; so may move out of the Salt Belt(aka: Rust Belt) when I get the chance. I like snow, just not salt.
    Great video.
Enjoy your little MR-2 in good health.
Dive safe, and I'll see you in the next video.
