The Power of Cutting Off & Letting Go | Br Phap Dung | 29 July 2018

  • Letting go is not about suppressing or denying our experiences, but rather acknowledging and accepting them with compassion and understanding. By embracing impermanence and non-attachment, we can free ourselves from the burden of past regrets and future worries, and cultivate a deeper sense of peace and freedom in the present moment.
    Brother Phap Dung, a senior monastic in the Plum Village Zen Tradition, explores these concepts further in this talk, providing guidance on how to cultivate the power of cutting off and letting go in our daily lives, and how it can contribute to our overall well-being and inner peace.

    In short then, we're taught growing up with the wrong idea that freedom is all about "doing what you want to do (to go after cravings, view, relationship) by gaining more power/wealth, " but true freedom comes from getting rid of these attachments in life. The freer you get, the more inner peace and true happiness one will attain.

      Yes, and it's rather obvious one would think. The more you believe that you need to have more more things, experiences ect. to be fulfilled the less you are or can be happy in that moment you are craving these things. This never stops because nothing can give you that everlasting happiness that you actually want. On the other hand the less you believe that outer things can give you that fulfillment the less you are compelled to satisfy your compulsory cravings, the more freedom and therefore the more happiness you'll experience. 😘

      Just do what feels right to you... because ultimately you only know what you perceive. So another person's ideas are actually you perceiving them. Don't forget without you, you wouldn't even know.

I was talking to the wrong people and 2. I was stressing myself out and moving further and further away from the happiness I deserve. I haven't yelled or argued with anyone in over a year lml.

      Dear Chi Quita, you could maybe see holding on as an act of letting go of cutting off. Does it make any sense? There is probably something that scares you in attachment. I have caused my share of cutting off and it was the fear of being cut off. The outopia was “I felt I was in control of the situation” by deciding to be the first to put an end to things.

      Then you end up with nothing. This is not rocket science - we learn that in life nothing is given, you have to EARN it & it won't be easy for the good things in life because everyone wants them and so there is competition. If competing is too tough for you, then you give up, you get peace but understand then that all you have done is give up

      @ramaraksha01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KT-pw1cq It is not that complicated
      Life teaches us that every choice comes with benefits and costs
      In life we know nothing is GIVEN - whether you want that Gold medal in the Olympics, get rich, be the next Einstein, Mozart - they ALL Come with lots of hard work, sacrifice, endless days of tears and disappointments, dealing with setbacks, falling down again & again but getting up again & again
      This is the cost we must bear to make our dreams come true
      The weak, the lazy give up & others are after peace & joy - give up all that & now we have plenty of time, no more hard work, no more sacrifices - we are happy! Yes but those dreams will die now
      At a certain advanced age, we may look at those who made it and say "I could have done that, I had more talent"
      We may have the ability to be the next Einstein, the next Mozart, the next great one, but we will never know - that is the cost for those who gave up

    • @KT-pw1cq
      @KT-pw1cq 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ramaraksha01 well some things in life you simply don’t have control of. For example, other human beings. You can’t make someone marry you, you can’t make your family get along with you.. etc.. I think a lot of people take things for granted because it’s the norm to have those things.. but reality is.. some people only have themselves.. no one else.. and they have no control over that.. so it’s not about “giving up” as long as you’re not dead.. you haven’t given up.

    • @ramaraksha01
      @ramaraksha01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KT-pw1cq Yes nothing is GIVEN - you can work hard, sacrifice, deal with heartache daily but it does not mean all that will pay off - Vincent Van Gogh didn't sell even ONE painting in his lifetime - he killed himself finally!
      What if he had given up? Never attempted to chase his dreams? never took up painting?
      Would he have lived a long happy life?
      sure!
      But then we would never know who he was
      That is the problem with this - desires, aspirations come with costs - to be a God one must walk thru fire!
      If you don't have the stomach for it, fine, then you exist - you live, you die, even your own loved ones will forget you a few years after your death
      But if you want to live forever, then there is a cost
      You have to ask yourself - what is your goal? If it is peace, joy & happiness, then give up your dreams, aspirations - isn't that what the Buddha advised?
      But if you want to chase your dreams, aspirations, then understand that pain & suffering is your constant companion

      Game of Earth
      I'm encouraged to write this article for most of the human race. The human race as I know it, doesn't know their own power and how great that power is and for sure they don't know how to use this loving power, while temporally living on Earth.
      As love is the fuel for power.
      I'm encouraged to write this article for most of the human race, because I know that most Humans don't know their own perfection.
      This article, I hope, will teach as many as possible to use their power to create a better and happier life while they
      live here on Earth.
      Truth is the fuel for happiness.
      It is not hard to understand what I say. However, it is very hard to believe it. For those that do, their lives will change as God's truth is the fuel for Happiness.
      When people believe in their perfection, their truth, long enough, they will totally neutralize Earth's illusions that have played on their thinking, thus compromising their creations. That will end. Again truth is the fuel for Happiness.
      When humans understand their (role) mission on earth, dealing with life here on earth, their lives will become easier.
      Know, when you understand Earth fully, you then believe in something and against nothing.
      My words (Gerald Albert) are easy to understand and some, very hard to believe. But that is normal.
      Earth is easier and easier to understand as we move to the truth of life. This article my help.
      New insight to thinking. This can be fun.

    A am a Franciscan Brother, and recently I have read a book by Fr. Daniel Horan "The Franciscan Heart of Thomas Merton". I mention that to say that a core teaching of Thomas Merton was on "True Self/False Self", Because of how deeply this growing understanding has impacted my life I have been mindful of all the ways that gifts are revealing themselves to help with inner clarity in this regard. This beautiful Dharma Talk by Br. Phap Dung leaves me with a rejoicing heart because while it might seem that I just sort of "stumbled upon it", I recognize it as a gift today ... a widening and deepening of the inner stream of life that I pray will continue to flow out into the world around me ... just as the tree that Br. Phap Dung has used in his illustration. Deepest gratitude to you for this gift!!

    Buddha stated desire is the beginning of all suffering. Get it? There is a time and place for all things. I meditate, if that's the word, during most activities like cleaning, installing shelves in my shed, playing the piano, reading, shaving - the whole kit and kaboodle. Washing dishes - a job I have had many times over the decades (very minimum wage) - offered moments of Zen for me and time to consider the many things going on in my life at those various times. And the possibilities of the future in which I am presently living. My faith is in God and my trust is in Christ. The flavor of Eastern philosophy is an additional spice to the richness of the meal God prepared for me. There is no contradiction in truth. I like this guy.

    The name of Amitabha Buddha is immeasurable and boundless, inconceivable, profound and mysterious, wonderful, and unsurpassed. If you recite the name of Amitabha Buddha wholeheartedly, all the merits and virtues are contained in it. The two benefits of the dark and yang, the protection of the world and the cessation of disasters, the merits and benefits of the "Three Seasons"! The relatives of the Yangshang family came to participate in this dharma meeting, and persuaded the dead to believe and wish to recite the Buddha's name to live in the Western Pure Land! so important.
    May the world be peaceful, the country is prosperous, the people are safe, the weather is good, the common cause of this generation, the disaster will be eliminated, and we also pray that this sword calamity , WAR can reduce the damage, peace, happiness, and good luck. Namo Amitabha 🙏🙏🙏

      Actually OCD and ADHD are not a wild mind that needs taming because it craves too much it is a mind that cannot find the response chemicals for a certain action therefore the mind is starved even though it's doing something physically so it's not about the mind with a sweet tooth it's about a mind that doesn't know there's food metaphorically speaking

    I’m almost halfway through this video. The “cutting off” part with regards to parenting reminds me of a Hindu teaching I learned in a book about the teachings published around India’s year of independence. With regards to human relations-including family-this author spoke of some level of “detachment”. If one becomes too attached to loved ones in their life, relationships that should produce joy produce misery, thus, as in “deparenting”, some level of detachment is necessary for harmony for all involved. Back to video, thank you for your teaching.

    For a beginner, it’s true that initially you started with letting go all the unnecessary things in your life, which is quite a lot, if you examine it carefully. But you don’t just “cut off” attachments, most of us are not monks, we live in this world and have many obligations to it. Many others are not Buddhist either, they don’t have the basic foundation built to embark on the path. It’s kind of like going to war, you don’t just go “ ok, there’s a war here, it’s bad so let’s go fight”. Without proper understanding and training or combat experience, you’ll just going to die. When he was still living teaching the Dharma, The Buddha emphasized on “skillful means” when it comes to helping people, different individual with unique problems required different solutions. Familiarize yourself with the Eight Fold Paths, learn basic dharma directly for yourself.

      He is mindful to ear-consciousness, meaning he knows when a sounds arises that it is a sound. Whereas others that not mindful the sound of a crying child does not reach the conscious level of our perception but goes straight to our conditioned emotional programs where it triggers a habituated response. Mindfulness means becoming aware of this process and therefore becoming able to choose wether to react or not if no reaction is necessary or helpful. 😘

      Well that's not neccesarily true, most lay people - throughout history, would be in need of those few who could recite, because they would likely have wandering minds whilst doing tasks also. I think it's why these teachings stay so relevent, it seems to be human nature to have this "monkey mind." I would be wary of placing predecesors on a pedestal, or thinking of them as all the same and lacking the diversity and complexity that we see in one another today.

    I for one could,n9t,bear,to,sit there with all those people invadin g my spcae. I am not a hermit...I have a spouse...we are two halves of a whole. I am a retired academic psychologist I love peace quiet in nature, the tranquility . We live in the tropical mountains of Guatemala in perfect peace. WE have a small villa with tropical garden. WE have as much terrace covered and uncovered as we have indoors space. We read, listen to music, meditate outdoors all on our covered terrace overlooking our rose garden, fountains palm trees etc. Our terrace always some of our blooming orchids...it,8s an idyllic life we worked hard to have. Our bodies are in their 70s with small things to manage but our minds are in our 40s perhaps. AS former sailors this is the life we NEED outdoors all day. People here wash their clothes in pilas outdoors by ha d or in streams still....we can meditate doing chores....I love to cook with intention fully living in the rhythym of preparation. I take the time to treasure every moment.
