God almighty, I just cant understand why this man is not officially declared a national treasure. John prine is an incredible song writer, singer, story teller and human being. So unselfish he must be to write something like this for us...we really dont know how lucky we are...to have him with us now. Thank you John prine.
I do believe he is a National Treasure Danny and I'll tell you, I grew up watching the man and he was amazing and it was a real bitch watching him grow old and he died. But I'll tell you there's others like Jim Croce and Patsy Cline, Kurt Cobain and others never got to see grow old and you'll always be young in my mind but I'll be damned when I see his young face here it's yours a hell of a lot different than that well-traveled road of his face as an old man. The best to you Danny, take care.
I declare him a: U.S. of America, National Treasure By the authority of being an American, myself. The curious musical seekers will eventually come across good music of all times and genres. TH-cam is beautiful that way. ☮️
Why? Rockwell never took a chance in his painting. "Raped by a minority" doesn't fit with Norman Rockwell's nice, pretty vision of an idyllic America. Prine says something real here.
I sing this song to myself as I am walking the streets of Dungannon, or wherever I happen to be at any given time. I love this song and I love John Prince, and I don't care who knows it.
Broke my heart when John Prine died last year. My older sister and I had his Sweet Revenge album in the '70's. We listened to it over and over! So funny and clever! Some of the music is so beautiful it almost makes me weep. Good time, in particular, on the sweet revenge album, has the most beautiful guitar solo in the middle of the song, I wish it would just keep going. My sister died in 1982, she was 27 and I was 22. Last year on her 65th birthday I went to the cemetery and sang, My Mexican Home to her. Thank you John prine, u have been one of the strong connections to my sister all these years. I can not thank you enough. God Bless RIP
A buddy & I were stopped at a light in Denver one evening (waiting for it to turn green). A lady behind us hit her brakes a little late to stop from ramming us (she was trying to manage her young kids in the back seet). After we sat up from jolting foreward we looked at eachother & started singing this song. We walked back to the ladies car to make sure they were all ok. While we waited for an officer to arive we went into the convenience store & brought out slurpees for the lady & her kids.
This song brings back a lot of memories. Me and my dad would go fishing all the time, well I would fish and he would get drunk. On the way home he would always sing this song.
This is one of my FAVORITES of John Prines‼️🎶💃 This is my FIRST CAH I BOUGHT and had so many memories "the footie" aka the "Black beauty‼️" it kept so many of us safe and happy for .32 -.37 a gal. of gas many trips to the packie. Those were the daze of the good Olde '70's
Only JP could write a song like this and hold your attention. Adding a bit of satire makes one think about the absurdity of the world as well!! Pure genius!!
Absolutely LOVE this song by John, it reminds me of just what his message is about: small town gossip. Sucks to have grown up in a town like he described, but it taught me a lot about how people really are, and how good it feels to have gotten the thell out of there. May god bless you John Prine, if there is indeed such a thing.
I love this song !!! Uncle Allen would play it and sing it to us. So grateful to have been introduced to this man and his music. God speed John Prine. Peace and Love sent your way tonight and forever
Sweet Revenge was a big part of the soundtrack of me and my cohort's teenage years. Many a party singing and playing 'the accident' Christmas in prison, don't bury me.. just heard JP is waylaid by the COVID virus, prayers and intentions for his recovery.
I love this man and his music. This song was a favorite,on an album I bought 30 yrs ago. It still holds up,and makes me laugh. What more could you want from a song?
I love this song and Illegal Smile. Both have that Prine humor. A little dark. And doncha just hate it when people say you don't know how lucky you are. If the wreck hadn't happened, THEN you're lucky.
Thanks for posting this video. Today I happened to think of this song again which was odd since the last time I heard it was about twenty years ago, coincidentally in exactly the context you describe yourself; around a campfire listening to a friend with a guitar. Couldn't even remember the name but searched the "minority" bit and lo and behold you had uploaded it a month earlier. Great memories. Thanks again!
It was about 150 degrees (exagerated temp) outside & her air-conditioner wasn't working. She invited us to dinner that night to thank us but we couldn't make it. We had tickets to see John Prine. True story.
I just realized that I've watched and enjoyed a number of the Prine videos you've uploaded, Laurie. I've subscribed so that I don't lose track of them. Thanks for sharing!
I think the reason I bought the "Sweet Revenge" album was because there was a song called "Onomatopoeia" on it. And I was impressed by that title, as the man pictured on the cover didn't look like one who would know the word. Many pleasant surprises on that album, including this song. Love the storytellers like Prine, Mose Allison, Lyle Lovett, Steve Goodman, etc. etc.
+river song 2-9-2016 Yup. I like lyrics that are are at least a little bit cerebral. Some others off the top would be Dr. John, Zevon, of course Dylan, The Coasters (Lieber/Stoller), Smokey Robinson, Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead), ... almost forgot Roger Miller etc. I like those lyrics that you can't ignore, even when you don't agree. But of course not unnecessarily obnoxious. I knew Goodman was a buddy of Prine. Too bad he couldn't be here for the Cubs this year (at least the first part of the season ...)
+river song Many's the time I have thought about "The accident" when there is a minor accident or problem in life, and give thanks for so many blessings. Especially little minor vehicular accidents or vehicle breakdowns. And then instead of crying 😂 almost smile 🤓.
Having seen JP live many times over the years, he remains amused by the good lines, as if he's just written the song and is looking at the notebook, saying to himself: "Now that's a winner, I'm gonna go have a smoke and a beer..." Watch the bassist almost laugh, at about 3:40, after he's harmonized the "raped by a min-or-i-tee" line. That's the type of line that only JP can get away with, without coming off like an a-hole, 'coz it's the attitude of the people in the song, not his own.
Prine is probably the best songwriter of my lifetime...(sorry, Dylan)... He wrote about real life and it's impact on the everyday man. He wrote 'Flag Decal' when Dylan was posturing about whether the war was wrong or right. Those who served undoubtably connected more with Prine's vision of what the war was doing to the young men who served.
Something to do with copyright restrictions. TH-cam wasn't asked to remove the video, only to make it unavailable in certain places, and I'm not really sure what that accomplishes.
don't know if john is going to right a song about M O R K and MINDY or maybe already has - of course I will follow Stevie and John until the Big Rock. Big smile and thanks. Fugitive thru the 70 -s and of course C o l u m b o now - Got a pee.
as so often I wonder how easy it must be to write a song, if one's talented enough, and I wonder even more why I never knew the situation to write a song about when it happend, shoot ;=)
Hi, Rob! My NZ friend alpheta22 is currently trying to add harmonies to "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" for me. Having never done a collaboration before, neither one of us really knows what the heck we are doing.
@ genegenegene1 do you have your name three times so you won't forget it? :) I am in Canada and why..... because I was born here! This man is awesome live. He came to Vancouver BC and I had the pleasure to attend his show. Bought the DVD after I watched this so now can listen and watch all.
if anyone has social commentary, send yer cards and letters to John Prine..... respectfully. dear John if you get any disrespect as a result of my post I respectfully apologize and offer my own comment... nowadays people just don't gittit.. sorry.
Last night I saw an accident On the corner of Third and Green Two cars collided and I got excited Just being part of that scene It was Mrs. Tom Walker and her beautiful daughter Pamela, was driving the car They got hit by a man in a light blue sedan Who had obviously been to a bar They don't know how lucky they are They could have run into that tree Got struck by a bolt of lightning And raped by a minority It was a four way stop dilemma We all arrived the same time I yielded to the man to the right of me And he yielded it right back to mine Well, the yield went around and around and around Till Pamela finally tried Just then the man in the light blue sedan Hit Pamela's passenger side Pamela hit her head on the mirror Mrs. Walker got a bump on the knee The man hit himself in the face and said "Why does this happen to me?" The neighbors came out And they gathered about Saying "Hey! who hit who anyway?" And the police arrived at a quarter to five And pronounced all the victims "Okay"

I am with you my friend, I have tears running down my face almost as bad as when I heard John Lennon was murdered. R.I.P. dear brother.
I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER DANNY. , THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH !!!!!!!!

John Prine is the Norman Rockwell of music.
Well said Francis OReilly !
Why? Rockwell never took a chance in his painting. "Raped by a minority" doesn't fit with Norman Rockwell's nice, pretty vision of an idyllic America. Prine says something real here.
I knew a Frances O'Reiily.

John Prine passed away from COVID 19. I'll miss you so much!
"more famous than the Grand Canyon" - awesome line! I'd pay $10,000 to drive around listening to John explain all these song inspirations.
Hell, call him up I bet ya he'd saddle up with a six pack and gas money! He is very down to earth.

JP's simple lessons jump to mind very often to me. It makes life more bearable and even enjoyable.
This song brings back a lot of memories. Me and my dad would go fishing all the time, well I would fish and he would get drunk. On the way home he would always sing this song.
RIP to an amazing singer, storyteller and American.

This is a very good song by John Prime
Only JP could write a song like this and hold your attention. Adding a bit of satire makes one think about the absurdity of the world as well!! Pure genius!!
And you pronounced all the victims okay! That is a great true story indeed!!
My favorite John Prine interview and song. I needed to smile again. RiP John.

This song is absolutely hilarious
john prine we do love
This tune is good for getting your mind right after a minor "fender bender".

Her name wasn't Pamela, it was Connie...
Last night I saw an accident
On the corner of Third and Green
Two cars collided and I got excited
Just being part of that scene
It was Mrs. Tom Walker and her beautiful daughter
Pamela, was driving the car
They got hit by a man in a lite blue sedan
Who had obviously been to a bar
They don't know how lucky they are
They could have run into that tree
Got struck by a bolt of lightning
And raped by a minority
It was a four way stop dilemma
We all arrived the same time
I yielded to the man to the right of me
And he yielded it right back to mine
Well, the yield went around and around and around
Till Pamela finally tried
Just then the man in the light blue sedan
Hit Pamela's passenger side
They don't know how lucky they are
They could have run into that tree
Got struck by a bolt of lightning
And raped by a minority
Pamela hit her head on the mirror
Mrs Walker got a bump on the knee
The man hit himself in the face and said
"Why does this happen to me?"
The neighbors came out
And they gathered about
Saying "Hey! who hit who anyway?"
And the police arrived at a quarter to five
And pronounced all the victims "Okay"
They don't know how lucky they are
They could have run into that tree
Got struck by a bolt of lightning
And raped by a minority
