I'm assuming the Corruptor change random assigned value; for example the height and the size of objects, but also: the camera's starting position, his falling speed, etc. Mario flying at the beginning probably came from turning his movement vertical speed (aka the direction he falls towards when in mid-air) from a large negative number into a small positive number, meaning he would "fall" slowly upwards instead of quickly falling, well, down.
