OH MY FUCKING GOD!!! I have just watched a 1989 concert fot prince Charles bithday ( now KING) it was fantastic with tina turner, phill collins, paul mc, mark knophler, goerge micheal, ect.. great! How great to be alive in tbe 80s. The next up John Martyn at tbe bbc.. fuck love him.. ( my hubby not a fan) so searching on youtube for the song tbe broght me hear.. couldn't find straight away.. but found some great vid of John over the years.. ❤HE NEEDS TO BE RESURRECTED!!! He is our connection to the past that shows we are all just HUMAN.. dont fear what we do.. just enjoy what we have! He has made me realise we are only here for a short time! The earth is BILLIONS of year old.. xx listen and Enjoy!! Xx peace, love to ALLLLLLL!
I saw him open for Yes back in the 70s playing solo like this with nothing more than an Echoplex, a volume pedal and a fender amp. It was a perfect warmup for a Yes who were in their prime. The experience of seeing one man create such a fullness of sound and fine music has stayed with me to this day. I'm glad this is here so people can see what it was like. Thanks for the post.
Similar to many, i just caught this on the Guitar Heroes song and both myself and my partner sat mesmerised for the duration. There's something undefinably perfect about this song.
Hi Guys, you can download this version from Play. com, obviously type in John Martyn then " live Hippodrome 1977 " in the download section, it downloads straight to itunes, ive done it and im lovin every minute of it!
Yeah- i googled him the other night, its a real shame- he got an OBE this year too from the queen, i hope that kinda cheers him up. Im just happy i was sober enough to press record on sky + to keep on watching it when there is nothing on telly! I still cant get this tune outta my head- its top
Holy shit- i seen last night too after a few beers on guitar heroes! It blew me away along with obviously santana and Dire, the guitar on this sounds amazing, your right about popular music- it aint a patch on stuff like this.
You guys have said it all. We must all have had te same experience! Say it on guitar heroes, Had to watch it twice. Woke up next morening and had to listen again - and here i am now. What an amazing guy. 1977! Jesus.
Superb! I never knew that a guitar could be played this way, until I istened to this. Utterly outstanding, and a perfect representation of subject matter. It never gets old.
john martyn is one of the most inventive and creative musicians i listen to one of my favorites , when hes sober , my dad saw him live in the 80s told me he was drunk on stage and just sounded like noise , sobriety + john martyn = Win
I gotta try to put this in context. John got the first half of a one-hour show. "Dealer" was the last song he did. He was shuffled off to make way for the band "Racing Cars". They were never heard from again. John blew the first half on a performance of "Outside In", then "Spencer the Rover" and "Dealer". Probably the best performances he's ever done. I would like to know where I can get a copy of this video.
Yep...we certainly did have the same experience! What a totally trippy tune, way ahead of his time and completely genius and I'm ashamed I've not heard it before. . . it's not like we hadn't heard of him before is it?!
I remember seeing this, when it was first shown, it was the first time I heard him. It blew me away the way he played. John started with outside in, outstanding version. Sadly because the band Racing Cars overran john only played three numbers, Spencer The Rover, was the other one. You Tube do not have Outside In from this concert which is a shame.
Superb!! I saw him in Glasgow in '77 at the Pavillion and this was the version of Dealer that he played that night. Never thought I would see it again - nice upload!!
@Steevlan1 Saw the same billing at MSG in 1973 I was all of 13 yrs old .Blown away by JM and the echoplex That was it onstage just him and 4 House spotlights shining on him. Someone threw a frisbee up thru the spot beams in the middle of this song and he saw it and said "Wooooow" all the while playing with out missing a beat. Long Live John Martyn !
The way he plays this makes it so discordant, yet it works perfectly. It the best representation of being under the influence of a class A drug that I have ever heard. I dont advocate using, but this is utterly superb!
something about this guy! i love it! just recorded guitar heros on sky plus again, see this on there for the first time last year.. aparently his parents wer opra singers?? not herd of him b4, v.cool xx
Mate.. Same here.. Like he was there then just took away.... soo much talent and honest Love him Years later I found him again.. looking for The song.. it was TBE DEALER.. you know only to find I was the last person to comment.. 14 FUCKING EARS AGO!! Hope you are well.. getting on, in this vast universe we call life!! X Rip John Martyn
The biggest difference between music of now to this is that THIS grabs you by the heart and lets you in. Modern music thumps you around the head demanding attention. Love you John you will be missed missed missed....... I am drinking wine at 1am watching as much as I can see on you tube. Bless your Heart. n
@Waggonerslad I don't think he is tuned to CFCCGD here. From what I can make out, he's tuned to AGDGAD, though tuning the A string to G could well be wrong. But to play the chords the way he's playing, the other tunings are about right.
I've got it on C F# C# F# G# C# which seems to work. He's probably dropped the tuning a bit more to save his voice it also helps with those bent notes as the strings are quite loose.
Anyone have any idea what tuning he is in and what chord he's playing? I can't find any TAB anywhere! Love you john. I just wish more people could share your music.
Well, I cannot be your lover and I will not be your friend Well, I know you say you need me but I have no time to spend We could talk like this for hours, I'd just end up getting bored 'Cause no one needs a dealer just a day before a score Let me in, let me in Let me in, sweet darling, let me in, let me in Let me in, let me in Let me in, sweet darling, let me in, let me in Do you think that you could leave me? Could you leave and go away just for a little while? Do you think that I could leave you? Could I leave and go away just for a change of style? Well, the children ?up there? dig my shit so I sell it to them cheap Better bring the scales and check the deal, getting scared that I might cheat Well, you're just a speck of polish on the fat man's shiny shoes And I think I hate them for it and I think they hate me too Well, you spend your whole life moaning down the telephone for bread Can't get your sleep for trying, darling, remember what you said You come around most any time, sell me ?what you can? What you see is what you get, catch me if you can
@panzermort That's fair enough, but I play guitar and I know from what he's playing and the fingering more or what that tuning is. Try it and see what you think.
@DeadWhiteButterflies Can I just ask why do you wish more ppl could share his music, the vast majority of ppl like to be spoon fed processed crap, John and the 000's of other talent musicians are there for people like you and me who can be bothered looking for it. John always made a living I am quite glad he never made it massive Every one of the 20 + time I saw him live was packed out, whether it was a big theatre of a little pub gig. I hope I don't sound as thou I am having a go cuz I'm not.
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!

Remember going CRAZY!! looking for a blank cassette when this was on the tv & radio. Fantastic to see this again after 32 years. Great posting
Still mesmerized by this song and the use of "echo-plex" ,very etherial and evoking!
I remember seeing this, when it was first shown, it was the first time I heard him. It blew me away the way he played. John started with outside in, outstanding version. Likewise. I couldn't believe how amazing it was. Great chords and progressions in the form of some amazing, innovative sounds. Very atmospheric!
Genius.
I caught the 78 tour in Plymouth - seemed like everybody went backstage after the show.
Best version I've ever heard! Pure ecstasy.
Superb!! I saw him in Glasgow in '77 at the Pavillion and this was the version of Dealer that he played that night. Never thought I would see it again - nice upload!!

How the heck he stops this turning into an incoherent mess beats me - amazing skill and musicianship.
So true, it would be so easy to massacre this by trying to cover it
Any info on where to find entire footage of this broadcast ????
Is he playing with a backing track or are all these sounds coming from a guitar synthesizer?
@django1889 i no wrond song sorry, its actually DAFGCE
@panzermort That's fair enough, but I play guitar and I know from what he's playing and the fingering more or what that tuning is. Try it and see what you think.
Who booked that?! Haha!
is it just me or is there a polepiece missing from that pickup?
@AndPlus mine's a large one
