This song makes me feel like I'm 11 again, my autism or depression still undiagnosed, in a car with my parents, going home from another meeting with a psychiatrist that has changed nothing, listening to this on my earphones, gazing at the sunset and wondering whether I'd be happier if I was "normal". And of course holding back my tears, embarassed to show them even to my loved ones. I have forgotten about it, just like a lot of stuff from back then, I'm 18 now and found it again by accident today. This is the closest I can get to time-traveling to the past just to hug little me and tell him he'll be fine eventually.
I'm as far removed from your situation as things can probably be, as an older woman who has never really had friends or been well liked my entire life. As different as we are in age and circumstance, I feel like this song was written for me, too. I camp in the mountains by myself a lot, and remembered this song on my last trip. When he says "please don't cry now" it feels like a hug to my past awkward self too. I love myself enough now to not care so much if I "fit in" and honestly just do my own thing when and where I want. I don't want others to see my tears either. Get it. We'll be fine.

This video was shown to me over a decade ago by a woman named Sunny Rae. I was fortunate enough to love her and be loved by her. It was a connection stronger than anything I'd felt before, or have felt since. She took her own life on March 18th, 2011, and I have mourned her every day. Hearing this song at the end of Hellblade absolutely leveled me, as I was already heavily reminded throughout the game of the demons with which she struggled, and the lengths to which I'd go to speak to her even one more time. Ouch!! I've just discovered this video today. I always think about my daughter. I made sure to do everything I could to provide for her for 15 years. Always from far away. Almost 6 years now without seeing her as her "mom's secret friend." I know I might get judging comments, but I had to take, maybe for the first time like a man, her mom pushing me away for whatever fears she had. All in order for my daughter to grow in a "normal" household. I hope one day she will realize who I was/ am.

2010 my mother passed away. It was a part of my life when I had devoted too much of my time to work, and too little to my own life. This song helped me cry and heal. I started to live again by travelling more and meeting people. Going to more concerts and music festivals. I've seen VNV numerous times since then and I can't help from crying every time Illusion is played. Sadness, happiness and emotional relief. Crying while being close to people enjoying the song, the performance and being in the moment. Thank you Ronan and VNV for this, and thanks to all my fellow fans for the time together at the shows. In 2020 this is something I miss the most.

I've loved this song from the moment I heard it many moons ago. I was very lucky to be able to arrange for a instrumental version to be played at my mothers funeral, only the pianist and I knew, so it was a surprise to my wife when she heard those first few notes and gently squeezed my hand in recognition and comfort.

This song has stopped me from carrying out the worst decision I could have made, and because of this, I am still here, fighting the good fight. Dealt with heavy child abuse, mental illness, and physical disability from birth, and things got so bad. I remember listening to this song on the day that I chose to try psychedelic therapy, the only thing that was able to help me. In 2007, my 1st & only VNV show i attended here in my hometown San Antonio TX, I got to see Ronan Harris & Mark Jackson in person spending time with fans signing autographs so i got to meet both Ronan & Mark. They were SO cool very attentive to whatever you wanted to say, so i asked for both their autographs and to sign my Past Perfect DVD. By the way they performed at was The White Rabbit in 2007 for their Judgement Tour. It was a small place but man the energy that awesome feeling was wonderful. Ahen the show started, i walked up to the front where the stage was as did other VNV fans. Their somg lineup was perfect all their songs i got to see them in person than listening to their CD's in my vehicles. Illusion is just something that hits home to many of us. Like my severe PTSD being battle ridden, those horrible experiences i endured just anchored my heart and mind down to the abyss but that night, was the cure i dereved. I felt human again. Now when they played Honour it was just anger like it was war again. I will cherish meeting them and that show until my last day in this....."life"

Sometimes I wish songs like this didn’t have to exist, but there seems to be a beauty and wholesomeness so deep that would not exist had we not had the hardships and the resilience to overcome them.
I can totally related to that. I was so close back then ... soooooo very close to make my final act. All I needed was the rope. I had everything else (the place, the means, the clothes to wear, the message drafted so many times. I wanted to do it on that week. That video made me pause and wait ... cry and wait ... rewatch the video and think about it. I managed to push forward.. 2013 was almost my final year again and that video haunted me. So again I waited and thought about things ... then I sought help online. They were other music that helped It was not great but all the videos and the feedback of other people who were going through what I was going through or have been there helped a lot. It was a fucked up time. Now I see why I was hurting and I managed to grow. I am more cold and selfish now but at least I feel nice. It is fascinating that songs can change the life if someone on more than one occasion. These songs were the blade of grass that a part of me deep down was holding on desperately to avoid falling in the precipice. Now I have to get out my financial rut. :/

This song makes me feel like I'm 11 again, my autism or depression still undiagnosed, in a car with my parents, going home from another meeting with a psychiatrist that has changed nothing, listening to this on my earphones, gazing at the sunset and wondering whether I'd be happier if I was "normal". And of course holding back my tears, embarassed to show them even to my loved ones. I have forgotten about it, just like a lot of stuff from back then, I'm 18 now and found it again by accident today. This is the closest I can get to time-traveling to the past just to hug little me and tell him he'll be fine eventually.
I'm as far removed from your situation as things can probably be, as an older woman who has never really had friends or been well liked my entire life. As different as we are in age and circumstance, I feel like this song was written for me, too. I camp in the mountains by myself a lot, and remembered this song on my last trip. When he says "please don't cry now" it feels like a hug to my past awkward self too. I love myself enough now to not care so much if I "fit in" and honestly just do my own thing when and where I want. I don't want others to see my tears either. Get it. We'll be fine.

Ever notice the lack of rhyming? The singer is not bothering with that because it gets in the way of a heartfelt message. He's not just singing to you, he's talking to you. He maintains rhythm, but its a flexible rhythm based on how he decides to enunciate each sentence. There's such a sense of honesty and truth that comes from VNV's lyrical method that it's like a punch to the gut. I love it.

This video was shown to me over a decade ago by a woman named Sunny Rae. I was fortunate enough to love her and be loved by her. It was a connection stronger than anything I'd felt before, or have felt since. She took her own life on March 18th, 2011, and I have mourned her every day. Hearing this song at the end of Hellblade absolutely leveled me, as I was already heavily reminded throughout the game of the demons with which she struggled, and the lengths to which I'd go to speak to her even one more time. Ouch!! I've just discovered this video today. I always think about my daughter. I made sure to do everything I could to provide for her for 15 years. Always from far away. Almost 6 years now without seeing her as her "mom's secret friend." I know I might get judging comments, but I had to take, maybe for the first time like a man, her mom pushing me away for whatever fears she had. All in order for my daughter to grow in a "normal" household. I hope one day she will realize who I was/ am.

2010 my mother passed away. It was a part of my life when I had devoted too much of my time to work, and too little to my own life. This song helped me cry and heal. I started to live again by travelling more and meeting people. Going to more concerts and music festivals. I've seen VNV numerous times since then and I can't help from crying every time Illusion is played. Sadness, happiness and emotional relief. Crying while being close to people enjoying the song, the performance and being in the moment. Thank you Ronan and VNV for this, and thanks to all my fellow fans for the time together at the shows.

I had the honor of seeing VNV Nation live last night in Seattle, and this song is even more moving live.
I found this song shortly after i was diagnosed with DID and started to discover that my entire life until then (age 20ish) was a fabricated controlled lie by my abusive mother and father. My world crumbled and i almost ended it so many times, but this song kept me going. All these yrs later and I'm just so glad i found this song. I bawled so many times listening to it. Thank you VNV Nation for creating it.

I've loved this song from the moment I heard it many moons ago. I was very lucky to be able to arrange for a instrumental version to be played at my mothers funeral, only the pianist and I knew, so it was a surprise to my wife when she heard those first few notes and gently squeezed my hand in recognition and comfort.
14 years ago I heard this song for the first time, and so many things have gone from my life during this time... so many things I miss... so many things have changed... but this song still touches me in the same way , and today it's more than just a song for me, it's a box of nostalgic memories.

This song has stopped me from carrying out the worst decision I could have made, and because of this, I am still here, fighting the good fight. Dealt with heavy child abuse, mental illness, and physical disability from birth, and things got so bad. I remember listening to this song on the day that I chose to try psychedelic therapy, the only thing that was able to help me. Every time I hear this, I think of my friends who have faced the same but aren't around anymore, and I miss them so much.

I always find myself coming back here after many, many years.. Greater than the sum of its parts.
In 2007, my 1st & only VNV show i attended here in my hometown San Antonio TX, I got to see Ronan Harris & Mark Jackson in person spending time with fans signing autographs so i got to meet both Ronan & Mark. They were SO cool very attentive to whatever you wanted to say, so i asked for both their autographs and to sign my Past Perfect DVD. By the way they performed at was The White Rabbit in 2007 for their Judgement Tour. It was a small place but man the energy that awesome feeling was wonderful. Ahen the show started, i walked up to the front where the stage was as did other VNV fans. Their somg lineup was perfect all their songs i got to see them in person than listening to their CD's in my vehicles. Illusion is just something that hits home to many of us. Like my severe PTSD being battle ridden, those horrible experiences i endured just anchored my heart and mind down to the abyss but that night, was the cure i dereved. I felt human again. Now when they played Honour it was just anger like it was war again. I will cherish meeting them and that show until my last day in this....."life"

This song saved my life back in 2009 and I still can't listen to it properly without thinking about how deep of a rut I was in.
I can totally related to that.
I was so close back then ... soooooo very close to make my final act. All I needed was the rope. I had everything else (the place, the means, the clothes to wear, the message drafted so many times.
I wanted to do it on that week. That video made me pause and wait ... cry and wait ... rewatch the video and think about it. I managed to push forward..
2013 was almost my final year again and that video haunted me. So again I waited and thought about things ... then I sought help online.
They were other music that helped
It was not great but all the videos and the feedback of other people who were going through what I was going through or have been there helped a lot.
It was a fucked up time.
Now I see why I was hurting and I managed to grow.
I am more cold and selfish now but at least I feel nice.
It is fascinating that songs can change the life if someone on more than one occasion. These songs were the blade of grass that a part of me deep down was holding on desperately to avoid falling in the precipice.
Now I have to get out my financial rut. :/

I'm still alive... I'd like to think that this song helped in some way when life was rough all those years ago. Few knew because I wanted to be strong for others - not wanting people to worry that I was so close to leaving. This song spoke to me in ways others were not given a chance to. Thank you for making it. Crying right now thinking about all I would have missed out on. Even when you have no idea how it could possibly get better, it still can, so hold on.
