I was a musically-inclined 16 year old in 1990 when Stevie Ray was advertised to appear at the Boathouse in Norfolk, Va.
My friends and me went downtown early that day and enjoyed some liquid refreshments, I had more than my tolerance. I went behind a building to a loading zone and a truck pulled up.
A long haired white guy got out, walked over to me and asked if I was OK. I said that I was and he walked past me.
A few hours later I was feeling better and watching that guy...Stevie Ray...put on the show of a lifetime.

Welcome to the world of Stevie Ray Vaughan!!! The Greatest Of All Time!!! Literally every fiber of his being was the music! From the first note to the last note - the music flowed through him - non-stop! He became the music - the music became him!! Stevie Ray Vaughan was an open conduit to the music of the UNIVERSE & the music simply & effortlessly flowed through him!! It was his very soul 24/7/365, every move, every breath, every drop of sweat, every note, every time....THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE HIM!!! R.I.P. - S.R.V. He is not gone - He is just away. Ask your friends, not us, why you never heard of him. Imo, everyone knows about Jimi because he died tragically because paramedics effed up in London (and that’s just a PART of the story!), but in all honesty, music wasn’t NEARLY as popular when he horribly died at the age of 35, in 1990. His guitar isn't plugged into an amp. It's plugged into his soul...
Not sure why you haven't heard of him.
Eric Clapton, (guitar God), said in an interview he was driving in England and he heard Stevie on the radio, he had to pull over to the side of the road because he couldn't drive and listen to Stevie's guitar at the same time.
David Bowie asked Stevie to play during one of his world tours. He's the lead guitarist in the song "Let's Dance" by Bowie. If you listen to the song, you can definitely hear Stevie.
B.B. King and Robert Johnson loved him.

he is not a household name because even though he bumped around in the Texas underground blues scene for a few years his international prominence didn't happen until his first studio record release in 1983. He died in a helicopter crash in 1990. The "world" had SRV for only seven years. It was a magical seven years that many of us who were fans of his at this time still cherish. I saw him three times and he is the most naturally improvisational guitarist I have EVER seen in my 50 years of seeing live concerts. He never played one song the same ever, he played each song each time with emotion and how he felt it on a given day.

I saw him live just a few month's before the helicopter crash that took this generational talent from us. He was famous in Texas, and we couldn’t believe how few people knew him outside of Texas. To Texans, he was ours. Guitar players knew who he was. People started to notice when he appeared on David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and that summer when ‘Texas Flood’ was released. He’s the only one who’s ever been able to really cover Hendrix while making it his own. He made a record, ‘Family Style’, with his brother Jimmie, which he’d always dreamed of doing, and was just starting to get known and on his way to being a superstar when he was killed in a helicopter crash leaving a gig. It was the most horrible thing in the world. He was a generous, kind man who was allowed to play with the gods. I’m blessed I got to see him play up close many times. Thank you for playing it. Check out Hendrix’s “Little Wing” from the same show.

Stevie grew up in a rough part of Dallas and was a shy misfit of a kid but had a deep love for the old time blues guitarists while also being heavily exposed to rock. When older brother Jimmie started playing guitar, Stevie followed suit and was playing paid gigs in local clubs from 8th grade. Austin was the center of a dynamic music scene so Stevie quit his senior year of high school to follow his dream, barely scraping through by couch surfing, sleeping on pool tables, and living communally with band mates. After putting his band Double Trouble together and getting an agent, they performed in Montreux to a lukewarm crowd...but Jackson Browne and David Bowie both heard him, and were blown away. Browne offered his studio at no charge for the band's demo tape, while Bowie used Stevie as guitarist on his China Girl album. Once Bowie's album hit the charts, Stevie's killer guitar licks got wide attention and the demo tapes were soon released as his first album, Texas Flood, with Double Trouble. He was widely respected by, and played with, many of his idols & guitar greats such as Muddy Waters, Albert King, Lonnie Mack, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and more. He kicked an addiction to drugs and booze that nearly killed him, and was a rising star at the top of his game when he died at age 35 in a helicopter crash. We lost a legend that day! His brother Jimmie is still performing blues & won a Grammy 3 years ago. He and many of Stevie's peers performed an amazing tribute to Stevie, "Six Strings Down" written by Art Neville with Jimmies collaboration. It's a heartbreaker.

Lol yes he is the goat but unfortunately was killed in 1990 age 35 in a helicoptor crash that Eric Clapton was meant to be on instead of him! EVERYONE was in awe of his genius...sad but we are lucky to have lots of live performances...like Elvis, better live always as no 2 performances exactly the same...a real loss. But he was one of the greatest to ever do it. I got to see him in concert 3 months before he died and I'm so glad I went. It was a remarkable experience. Had the pleasure to see this national treasure a few months before his tragic accident. He was as fine a human being as he was a picker. Taken when he had barely begun. His playing kept getting better, it'd be amazing to hear what he had in store for the world. Eric Clapton on Stevie's death, “The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped. I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. Stevie Ray Vaughan was the most underrated Blues guitarist of all time, Stevie Ray started playing guitar at the age of 7 when his older brother Jimmy Vaughan who is a great guitarist In his own right that had a band called The Fabulous Thunderbirds started playing guitar and Stevie Ray loved it, his parents bought him a little guitar with cowboy's on it for his 7th birthday but would play Jimmy's guitar. Stevie Ray said he heard a Muddy Watters record and was hooked on the Blues, he had a hard time finding anyone to give him a record deal because people said that the Blues didn't sell records. In 1977 he put together a band called Triple Threat Reuve and the singer Lou Ann Barton left in 1979 for a solo career and the band ended. Stevie Ray wanted to put another band together and the basses Tommy Shannon heard Stevie Ray was looking for band members so in 1980 Tommy Shannon who played in a band called The Chantones with Stevie Ray when they were in school joined Stevie Ray's band and drummer Chris Layton joined a couple of months later and Stevie Ray changed the name to Double Trouble. They were going nowhere so decided to record an album called Texas Flood which they recorded in 2 days, Texas Flood was released in 1983 and Stevie Ray was finally noticed, he played with some big names like Buddy Guy, B.B King, Johnny Copeland and Albert King who love and respected Stevie Ray he also was Stevie Ray's godfather. Stevie Ray could play guitar behind his head, backwards, one hand, broken string, switch guitar in the middle of a solo and never missed a beat, tune his guitar while playing, adjust his AMP'S while playing one handed, with his teeth and played guitar behind his back longer than anyone ever has passed or present. Stevie Ray's career only span 7 years but in that 7 yrs starting with Texas Flood in 1983 he is in The Austin Music Hall Of Fame, The Blues Hall Of Fame, he won 6 Grammys, 10 Austin Music Awards, 5 W.C.Handy, Entertainer Of The Year, Instermental Of The Year and was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2015. On August 27, 1990 Stevie Ray Vaughan played a show at the Alpine Valley Music Theater along with Eric Clapton, Robert Clay, Buddy Guy and his brother Jimmy Vaughan after the show Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash and sadly passed away at the age of only 35. I tried to make it short but get in as much as I could sorry it went a bit long. Stevie Ray Vaughan was and always will be THE GOAT

RIP SRV. This man changed the world for a lot of people the thing was, he stayed so humble, so simple. He just felt that stuff on every level and I like his singing voice an awful lot as well. Sometime, maybe go to his album double trouble and just either listen to or react to either one, every song on it. Everything on there is just mind blowing. There's one that's probably too short to react to but it really is a whole lot of fun. And he literally does the children's nursery rhyme, Mary had a little lamb. And it's off that album. He just has so much fun with it and he does the really amazing lick with it and his voice is just so smooth and tongue and cheek and you can tell he's just kind of grinning in his head the whole time to sing this children's nursery rhyme, laugh. Stevie started playin' when he was 4 got good at the age of 10 then started to practice 6 hour's a day. He would just practice 6 hour's a day playin' behind his back. People that play today ain't that dedicated to there music like Stevie was. He had his fault's but he was a hell of a nice guy. He was 1 inna 186 million like Secretariat and the White Buffalo. I will never see anything like him again.

The cat in the hat with the Strat SRVGOAT. I will try to answer your question the best I know ha his music was played on a lot of radio stations back in the day but nowadays, even the classic rock stations don’t really play his music too much but if you dig you’ll find it and you will see that he played with all the greats, but he was truly one of a kind.

the Live at El Mocambo is a LEGENDARY show. I dare you to get hold of it and watch the entire thing. Then do a little research on each song. Many are covers. Listen to the original then dig on Stevie's take. Stevie never played the same song once. There's an insane version of Texas Flood with Stevie and the legendary Albert King (cousin of BB King) that will sit you down and put your through the roof at the same time.

Appreciate your honest and heartfelt reaction. Check out Stevie Ray Vaughn "Soundcheck" (the one where he's wearing a leopard coat). His soundcheck is better than most concerts. Also, Elvis "If I can Dream" (in the white suit). Also, see Elvis and Celine Dion sing a duet on this song.

One day in Dallas in 82 these two cute sisters at work asked me if I wanted to go see Stevie with them? I said, who? I saw him 3 times live in bars in Dallas that year. The last time Robert Plant and Jimmy Paige were sitting at the table next to us just having a beer. They were there to check out SRV. Good times

Enjoying watching you getting introduced to my favorite guitarist of all time, so welcome to the world of SRV, better late than never. You should always react to his work LIVE as there are NO bad performances. My suggestions for starters would be "Life Without You" from Capitol theater, "Mary Had A Little Lamb", the nursery rhyme, live from Austin 1987 and "Voodoo Child", a Jimi Hendrix cover, from his Tokyo show.

Another you've never heard of, Jeff Healey check him out, SRV loved the dude. You might like Marc Brussard for some Louisiana Swamp blues, then a little of Morgan James singing, Aretha's Oh Me Oh My. After listening you will know "sanging" without autotune just talent!

Simply speaking as a music laymen. I've heard several debates about their playing ability. Just the talent alone is what I was talking about. Nothing from VH, saw him a few times live, listened to him since their first album, amazing gift. But SRV played like it was spiritual for him. Even his sound checks were on another level it seemed. Wasn't thinking about the genre's.

For me: SRV is the goat. I do love EVH but the styles of music is what separates them to me. With EVH I “hear” the music and it’s great but with SRV I “feel” the music and there’s nothing better than feeling the music in your soul
