Almost 12 months later (tonight), I decided to put this song while cooking with my pops, as I'm visiting him. Your comment could be his tonight. I'm still trying to understand what the age of 27 means to artists. I'm surviving, but it's such a delicate year. You can drown in your own inspiration in the blink of an eye. If this song reminds you of him, he will always be around when you play it. Tonight, we are all blue.
How lucky are we that Elvis Costello wrote this for Chet, that Chet finally came around to using it in his repertoir, and that he and his band managed this inestimably fabulous version so close to the end of his life. Just marvelous.

This is a good remaster, and I hadn't heard the spoken preface. The lyrics of this piece never made much sense in totality, but if they exist in the periphery just to set the mood for his biopic, they are fitting. It's interesting how Chet Baker's a lot like Bill Evans: once handsome, always talented, perhaps tragic.
