The Captain Holt "Strong, female woman, heavy breasts" quote is totally on point for that character. He's a gay cop working undercover as a straight man and has ZERO idea of how straight men talk about women.

My boss asked me why I was bringing in so many feminine hygiene products, and so many DIFFERENT types of them. I said because the company doesn't provide the women with menstrual solutions or anything besides tissue paper . He just kept staring at me waiting for me to further explain....... so I said 'I think its a major problem that can be solved with minimal effort. I pick up a variety box of tampons & another variety pack of sanitary napkins.' He said 'Yeah, but why though? They can bring their own, they know they're on their periods soooooo....' when I tried to explain to him that it can start at anytime, anywhere, without warning.....he looked like i said my ovaries could become explosives capable of nuclear destruction. 'They've had their periods their entire lives so if they don't know when its time that's just stupidity and laziness🤔 I said you've had you're genitalia your entire life so you should have known when your balls dropped and more recently when your dick stopped working and shriveled up. HR wasn't really on his side after she realized he was questioning me about why I needed so many period products, she was even less so when he agreed that indeed he thought women should be more in control of their bodily functions😂 I did get a write up but he got humbled by me and the HR lady. He's 60yo btw with an ex wife, a daughter, and a granddaughter.

As someone who has vaginismus, I’m so touched by that author’s note, and I have so much respect for the male author actually bringing awareness to it. I basically had to learn the hard way that I have this condition, and seriously, *it fucking sucks.* Not only does it make intimacy very awkward and painful, I can’t even use tampons and getting a simple exam is very anxiety-inducing. I had laparoscopic surgery last year and my surgeon actually gave me an exam while I was under because my vaginismus makes it impossible for it to happen while I’m conscious because of how painful it is. It’s embarrassing and it makes you feel like you’re broken. Meghan Trainor actually talked about this on her podcast once and people made fun of her for it, but I just felt so relieved that someone in the public eye was talking about it! (Also, getting extremely drunk does nothing for the pain. That gyno should honestly have their license yanked for a suggestion like that, holy hell.) Kudos on that author for bringing awareness to this condition because it really isn’t talked about enough at all, despite the fact that it’s actually pretty common. It can feel really lonely. I have no clue what that book is about or if it’s even a genre i like, but I’m tempted to read it because I’ve never read any story that has a character with this condition.

I love the books and can recommend the series! It's a fantasy novel for adults - something between Lord of the rings and Game of thrones in case of adult stuff. It has many great characters that you can empathise with, magic system is unique and every chapter ends in a way that you can't wait to read the next one! At least that's what it was for me! The series has five books in total.

As someone with vaginismus, it’s super refreshing to hear it talked about openly! I’m not shy about having it for that same reason. I was really lucky to have a great gynecologist and physical therapist. My gyno skipped my pelvic exam last year with the goal of trying it again this year, and I honestly feel super confident in my ability to handle it after my experience in physical therapy! It’s a frustrating and painful condition, but also treatable. I have always wondered what happened to girls in the past with it, though. It’s super depressing to think a lot of them were probably just forced to grit their teeth through the pain.

@@msepiphqny No, no, it’s okay! Basically I grew up in a very old-timey town with very bad sex ed, and there were a lot of signs I missed during my teenage years that were super obvious in retrospect. Like, I couldn’t get a tampon in at all, and I literally thought my hymen was blocking it. My first pelvic exam was so painful my legs were shaking, and I thought it was just cause I was nervous. I ended up finding out when I tried to be intimate for the first time at 20. It wouldn’t go in, and trying to force it was so painful it felt like I was being stabbed into. I ended up calling my gyno after that, which lead to her referring me to a pelvic floor therapist where I was officially diagnosed.

I was recently diagnosed, told to go home and touch myself, and when I said I’d never had sex and didn’t want to, they said I have mental issues. My therapist disagrees. I mentioned what the pt and obgyn said and the hospital deleted the files off my account. I have screenshots though. So I’m just dealing with it as I have been for decades. 🎉

@@yoshiyajoshuakiryu3198 That’s actually super awful!! Pressuring you into doing anything you don’t feel okay with is completely counterproductive to handling this condition and takes control away from you, especially when you can work on your muscles without directly touching them. If you feel comfortable with it, I would recommend trying yoga that focuses on the pelvic floor. It’s what helped me the most when I first started my treatment.

It’s also (very likely) a highly-evolved defense mechanism. Considering how badly harmed (even from strictly physical standpoint) a woman’s body is when p*netrated without the arousal mechanism to (for lack of better terms) “support” the process -we’re talking severe soft tissue trauma. Arousal nonconcordance is a known reflex believed to have evolved in women especially to at least partially protect them from this kind of physical trauma.

The book reviewed by Tahani Al-Jamil is satire - it's a joke in the final season of The Good Place in which a complete trash pile of a human writes a book he'd always meant to write in life, and that's the result. Tahani is a fictional character in that show.

The way it was explained to me was that it's like muscle memory gone horribly wrong. It can be treated but it's difficult and requires any partner with whom the sufferer has been or wants to be intimate to be patient and supportive. "Getting really drunk," wouldn't help in the slightest unless the person was SO drunk they were physically unable to tense up inside and I'm unsure if that's even possible, not even getting started on whether that person would be capable of giving consent in such a state.

There have been studies where women self-reported a bunch of sexual fantasies and kinks and rape fantasies and role play involving it have always been pretty far up there. Though in both cases it's always fantasy or make believe roleplay, never the actual thing. Chances are the woman you worked with has that "idea" as a result of untreated trauma from sexual assault. Something like that can lead to some really bad coping and that can be part of it. And SA is still way too common for women so the chances are sadly pretty high.

Statistically, a portion of women with severe anxiety who come from extremely strict religious backgrounds develop one. Basically, psychologists have found that since they want sex - which is perfectly natural, hormones are a thing - but their upbringing shames them for wanting sex and depicts wanting it as unacceptable, the only way they can imagine having sex and not being shamed for it is rape. This does not mean that they actually want it to happen in real life. It means that due to anxiety and abusive backgrounds, they have a thought beyond their control. So to answer your question of who are these women: women impacted by sexism, misogyny, hatred of women's sexuality, and psychologically abusive homes. It grosses me out, too, but instead of judging these women, we need to treat them with kindness. The world failed that and we as a society need to do better.

I think the point of rape fantasies is mostly the fantasy of being forced into sexual stuff that you secretly actually want, without having to feel guilty or ashamed for being slutty, because in this scenario, you did not choose it, but were forced.
Especially for AFAB people, actively wanting sex or kinky stuff, even in a fantasy in your head, is still very much stigmatized and associated with (slut)shame and negative feelings by their surroundings...
Which does not mean, that anyone wants to be actually raped.
Even an exact reenactment with a trusted partner following the script exactly is probably still something almost no one wants to have, because then you would have to very specifically ask for all that you would have liked done...

There was a study conducted once that I think it was around 70% of adults of every sexuality have had a "rape" fantasy in their life but it was concluded that the very high majority of them never wanted to be raped in real life and it could still be considered "consensual" because as a fantasy they want it to happen in whatever circumstance they were thinking of unlike real life rape where the victim is in no way consensual and forced against their will. I know as a csa survivor I had a thought about it before and when I was attacked so I thought it was my fault. It was not. It never was. No one wants to be raped and it is NEVER your fault.

His _Everyone_ series is very self aware as the protagonist is an author who writes about the murders mysteries that he's been caught up in, and he constantly breaks the fourth wall. I'm reading the sequel, _Everyone on This Train is A Suspect_ , atm and there's one scene in which he comments on how everyone is surprisingly still alive, and as he mentions each one there's a note after their name that's just "(not dead)". That first one!! I was so excited! It's Tress by Brandon Sanderson and that whole opening is literally meant to make fun of men writing women 🤣🤣🤣 or describing women 👀 Tress is a super awesome character and a wonderful book! She is strong, intelligent, resourceful, interesting and willing to ask for help when needed. She isn't one of those ridiculous female characters we see today that are forced to do everything themselves to be considered a 'strong' woman.
Edit: Also, the quirky intro is due to the book's inspiration. After watching The Princess Bride together, the author's wife, Emily, asked, "What if Buttercup had went to rescue Wesley instead of giving up?" So this book is basically answering that question in the context of a completely new fantasy world.

For anyone suffering from vaginismus - get yourself in to see a PELVIC FLOOR PHYSICAL THERAPIST.
If you have to be referred by a doctor, advocate for yourself and tell them that you want a pelvic floor physical therapist.
My therapist was the first person to totally get it and understand what all the muscles were doing, and helped me through it.
If you're not able to see a doctor, get yourself a body safe silicone dilator set and start with the very smallest.
I also had a gynecologist to give me stupid advice like "maybe you were SA'd" and "get on top". Even a crappy doctor should be able to refer you to a physical therapist if you ask

That bit about fantasy vs reality is very important.
I used to date a girl who confessed to me that she was excited about the fantasy of R*** and worried that it made her strange or screwed up. I told her the same thing Click said. There's nothing wrong with having fantasies. I myself used to have fantasies when I was a little girl about adult funtime stuff being done to me by one of my best friends mom.
It's just fantasy. I know full well that if it had actually happened I would probably be mentally scarred and emotionally damaged from such a thing happening.
As long as you understand fantasy is fantasy and it's appealing because you can control it. Even if part of the fantasy is you have no control you are still the director of the movie in your head and it goes the way you want it.

@@darienb1127 very true. I'm not into hard bdsm stuff with the whips and leather suits but i occasionally like to be restrained and held down. I like a little bit of roughness. But every good dom and sub partners have complete trust in one another and the safeword system means that the sub can enact their fantasy of being taken against their will and get that fantasy of losing control but also know that the second they say the safeword (mine is cookie dough), _everything_ immediately stops. The dom takes off all restraints and anything else and they go immediately to the aftercare where you both discuss what just happened. Talk about the good stuff, the bad stuff, the emotions you felt. What was too much, what was too little, etc.
So that just like in the fantasy the one who has the fantasy of losing all control doesn't actually lose any control at all. They can indulge in the fantasy of being forced while safely knowing that at _their whim_ they can stop the fantasy.

In fact, don't bring up gender at all, unless it's relevant to the story. So I wrote my characters with no regard for stereotypical gendered traits, relationships, or roles. Over time, I started to realize a lot of my characters ended up trans coded. I had wanted to include some trans representation due to this being a futuristic solarpunk society, but even the characters I based on myself read as trans coded. Its a great way to go about it!
It's sometimes okay to bring up topics that have to do with culture in a fantasy world that's different than this world when it comes to gender expectations and or roles.
But a woman character and a man character going through the same storyline don't really need their gender mentioned constantly.
So many times it seems like people write women without personality.
You can write a softer woman, that's fine, just give them personality and relevance that isn't centered around being a woman, you can make her strong physically or mentally but if "strong woman" is all she is Its a no thanks.
You just gotta think, if a male character in the same situation would be seen as having no personality, then you're probably doing it wrong.
As a side note: it's okay to have a woman have a love life or settle down with a partner in your writing too--it's just the fact that lots of writers and want to protect their female characters and in the process stunt their development.
My stories have all kinds of characters both men and women in many different roles. One thing I make it a point to do is always add some kind of personality to a character because I've had both men and women on my ideas fall flat in personality and development until I delve deeper into their character, say via a side story or off page event
I'll even mentally throw the character in an AU for a few hours in my head just to develop them by seeing them in a different situation

A Golem (pronounced "Go, Lem!" as if trying to get the frontman of Motorhead to leave your house) is a living construct - usually of clay as in Jewish folklore, though recent fantasy works can expand it to any material.
Gollum (pronounced "Gaul...ummm..." like someone asked you to describe what France was like during the Roman Empire and you completely forgot), is an emaciated ring-addicted river hobbit from Tolkien's writings.
It is one of my biggest pet peeves when people get these two things confused, especially people who should know better like folks working on fantasy games and other media.
