    The budget for both Afterlife and Frozen Empire combined was under $200M. Ghostbusters has always been a secondary market franchise with DVDs, VODS, merchandise etc. As long as those hold up, they will keep making them in some form.

      @MrCoat 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

      I've noticed in the past number of years, Sony has been really good with budgets and don't go crazy with them like other studios. Only the live-action Spider-Man movies have had massive budgets. They almost function now like how Hollywood studios used to do things, where they have a few big-budget movies, while the rest of the slate is throwing the dice at mid or low budget movies (like Anyone But You, for example).
      Even something like Madame Web, while obviously a flop, won't lose Sony nearly as much as something like The Marvels lost Disney, because it cost $80 million versus $200 million.

    In my opinion, Ghostbusters shouldn't be a movie franchise but a television series. It's literally monster of the week, and it had a lot of success doing the cartoon in the mid-eighties. THAT'S what grew the franchise and made it a recognizable name... the tv show and merchandise. (Who doesn't want the Echo-1... it's arguably as iconic as the Delorean).

    Ghostbusters feels like one of those franchises heavily based on merchandise, toys, cartoons, comics etc. Do you think that will maybe factor in the studios decision to make another one despite tepid box ofice success? Especially considering that this is an increasingly kid-friendly series. If im not mistaken we saw similar situations last year with franchises like TMNT and DnD.

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Always a factor - that's why I say box office profitability is only part of the picture. Though I'd imagine less box office often correlates to less merchandising revenue. TMNT definitely got a big bump from merchandising and DnD also had lots of revenue streams. Franchises are complicated, box office is much simpler.

    So odd for Ghostbusters to proudly tout that it's a "billion dollar franchise" based on the cumulative box office of FIVE movies, but they're gonna keep pumping out these sequels in search of the incredible high of that first movie! Bob Marley seems to have defied its critical reviews as it spends its first 7 full weeks in the Top 10 as it nears $100m domestic/$175m worldwide.

    • @notchuckproductions5029
      @notchuckproductions5029 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      At that point you could say Ben Hur is a billion dollar franchise, if you adjusted the inflation of the 1959 film and the 2016 film and combined them you would get billion or at least close to it

    • @0hMyGandhi
      @0hMyGandhi 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      How is that odd? A franchise is a group of products/services, and often judged as such. Most who see that a movie franchise has grossed a billion rarely ever think it's in reference to one particular movie.

    • @AllInTheGame01
      @AllInTheGame01 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@0hMyGandhi I'm pointing out that other franchises with similar high levels of name recognition have easily eclipsed $1bn unadjusted for inflation from just 1 or 2 movies! The fact that the 3 recent Ghostbusters movies (inc the latest one) with a combined $319m production budget will struggle to collectively exceed $600m worldwide suggests that the franchise isn't as strong/popular as assumed!

    • @adraino7345
      @adraino7345 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Not so if odd since you’re overlooking merchandising (and the other Billion* dollar franchises). Garfield is a billion dollar franchise but none of its movies were massive. Ghost Busters has the toys, TV show, shirts, novelizations, DVD & VHS sales and all the other merchandise.

    Question for you Dan! I've always wondered why the "domestic box office" seems to hold more power over studio decision making than the international box office, even for films that have significant international appeal. If a movie makes tons of money outside the USA, why does it matter if it's not making much money in the domestic market? Ghostbusters is obviously doing the opposite but it reminded me of the domestic Vs international separation in studio thinking.

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Studios get a bigger cut of the domestic box office. Depending on where a movie is making money internationally, it affects the overall profitability of the film. Sometimes a movie can be bailed out by international markets, but it’s rare.

      The major studios are in order clockwise - but I know that their market share will grow over time and make the other studios (Amazon, Lionsgate, All Others) smaller. So I'm planning for the future because I don't want to move the studios around on the chart. Ahhh... Ice Pirates... If you have not seen this wonderful gem, I urge you to see that film. It has everything in that film that a low budget space opera could ever want, including Space Herpes, fighting robots, time warps, and ice.... oh, and a secret way to get to earth!!! Some big names (at the time) that cameo, a strong female presence, and yes, a ladder.

    All studios will have been impacted by the strike, but he Disney share is not going to be very good at all this year. Deadpool and Inside Out 2 are going to have to really over preform for Disney to have a good year.

    A B+ Cinemascore isn’t that bad. Frozen Empire ties with Ghostsbusters (2016) with a B+ Cinemascore. I think the only issue with Frozen Empire is that Sony’s marketing for the movie just wasn’t there. They fumbled the marketing for a very terrible Madame Web and now with diminishing returns, Ghostsbusters should’ve ended after Afterlife’s success. I think the franchise will live on with Ivan Reitman’s brother, Jason. I thought Frozen Empire would be a summer movie just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original classic.

    • @andrewbloom7637
      @andrewbloom7637 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@SingleStepStudios Jason directed "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" (produced by Ivan) because his previous 5 films (2011's "Young Adult", 2013's "Labor Day", 2014's "Men, Women & Children", and 2018's "Tully" and "The Front Runner") had been commercial disappointments. Come to think of it, dedicating "Afterlife" to Ivan would have been Jason's means of paying tribute to his father's work on the original films, much like the 2016 ladies' film was dedicated to Harold Ramis, who had passed away two years earlier.

    Hey Dan, so I recently watched Oldboy on Netflix this week and I saw the NEON logo on there, but the movie is from 2003 when NEON didn't exist. Or is it because NEON had distributed Oldboy for it's 20th anniversary and that's the version they licensed to Netflix?

    The poster for Ghosterbusters Frozen Empire is odd. The movie is about the Phoebe character but the poster has the character hidden. Is this due to the fallout from Ghostbusters (2016)?

    • @DanMurrellMovies
      @DanMurrellMovies  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It's probably more likely due to contractual obligations - while Phoebe may be the breakout character, actors like Paul Rudd, Bill Murray and Finn Wolfhard are "bigger" and therefore may be featured more prominently due to contract negotiations or a studio decision that they're more marketable.

      @@DanMurrellMoviesthat's what I figured as well. I think they should just lean into it, and make Matrix Reloaded-esque character posters with an edge typeface for each character name.

    I love your charts n numbers. Guys like campea always talk box office n marketing budget but never consider or discuss how some films serve as advertisement for IP n can realistically be 'worth it' because of all the secondary revenue from licensed merchandise. Ghostbusters and that most recent turtlrs n transformers films were all 'worth it' even if the box office wasnt that greeat.

      Domestically Barbie made nearly 4 times its first weekend's box office (more precisely 3,92 times). Oppenheimer final domestic box office was exactly 4 times its opening weekend. Excellent legs in both cases for such hugely successful movies

    I remember seeing all 5 of those movies in 1984. I don't recall if I saw them all in the theater or the drive-in, but I saw them all.
    Ice Pirates is wild, it's sci-fi meets pirates, as I kid I remember loving it, but I haven't seen it probably since the 80's, so I'm curious just how bad it actually was.
    Tank was just that, this retired army dad owns a tank, for some reason, and uses it to break his kid out of jail, then they make a run for the state border to escape the evil sheriff. My Dad loved it, so anytime it was on some cable station, he was watching it. As I recall, it had a 70's trucker movie vibe, so coming out in 1984 it was very out of place.
