The Legendary Monsterverse is one of the few franchises I can remember making a financial comeback after having decreasing box office returns with each sequel. Even making Godzilla vs. Kong was a risk after King of the Monsters and that was before the pandemic. I wonder if being one of the first major movies to release after the pandemic gave it a shot in the arm since there was less competition and in a weird way, was one of the few movie series that actually benefited from the pandemic.

Though it only got a little lip service (understandably as it's a little beyond the scope of the video), the Japanese release of Oppenheimer is rather interesting, as it almost couldn't secure a distributor due to controversy around the Barbenheimer phenomenon and general apprehension about the subject matter. A rather poetic final market, even if only unintentionally.

Clearly the way forward for Legendary/WB is to send Godzilla to Arrakis to fight a sandworm. Perhaps Paul Atreides' use of atomics creates a terrifying radioactive mutant sandworm which only Godzilla (and Kong) can defeat. ;-P

The most expensive B movie ever, atleast they leaned into how dumb it was and I had a great time. Just a couple of dudes being bros punching stuff. If Godzilla and Kong made out at the end it would have been a 5 star movie.
kinda ironic that in 2021 Dune and Godzilla vs Kong were two of the movies that carried the box office that time, and now in 2024 they meet again and doing the same thing. 😅

I know that the closures are about domestically not reporting grosses, but with a movie with as long legs as Oppenheimer I find it funny that the week you declared it closed it finally o(p)pens in its 2nd most important market culturally speaking 😂
For that slide where you calculate Oppenheimer profit, think we should deduct the money spent on the awards marketing campaign. They must have spent a lot of money over several months on PR, events, gifts, etc to push this movie through in the awards season. That must have made a significant dent on the profit of $139m shown in your calculations
The preview I saw for 'Someone Like You' looked even crazier than you explained it. In the preview I saw, it wasn't his dead girlfriend's twin that he was pursuing but basically a stranger who he has convinced himself had to be similar to his dead girlfriend because his dead girlfriend was born via IVF and he discovers that another couple adopted one of the frozen inseminated IVF eggs that his dead girlfriend had been a part of and so now he is on the hunt for this person since it is the biological "twin" of his dead girlfriend. Absolutely bonkers and the thought of someone finding that romantic terrifies me lol.
WB opening March with Dune 2 and closing it with Godzilla x Kong is the highlight of the year. Two blockbuster movies couldn't be further apart from each other.
(1) Godzilla is a lizard, and we all know that wizards DON'T GIVE A DAMN. (2) The collateral damage makes the Battle of Metropolis look like an Easter egg roll on the White House lawn. (3) The movie is ridiculous, and I DON'T GIVE A DAMN. I guess I'm a lizard. (4) Kong is now a king..! (5) It's illegal to watch a Monster verse movie while sober. Just saying.
Ghostbusters is skewed by how popular it's first installment was. It hasn't been a "blockbuster" franchise for a long time. Not considering inflation, not a single GB release has made it to $300M worldwide. They are fairly cheaply made movies that make a small profit. For what it's worth, there are still several territories that Frozen Empire hasn't been released in yet. I could be wrong, but I feel like the studio knows what they have. A semi-popular franchise that makes its money on DVD/VODs and merchandise. If they wanted to swing for the fences, they'd spend $200M+ and make it with Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Bill Burr, Sandra Bullock etc. - it just doesn't seem that that is what they wanna do?
Mmh, I would say, however, that adjusting for inflation is not such a negligible aspect: in 1984 the first movie made "only" 296 million on a 25-30 million budget, which means that its box office was 10 times its budget. In today's dollars, it would have made more than 650 million just in the US. This last one could fail to reach 180 million worldwide on a 100 million budget, which would mean a 10-20 million loss in the theatrical release, without even considering the 70-80 million likely spent in advertisement. I don't see another Ghostbusters movie in the near future...
As for the crowded stacking of films, why would WB care how a Sony film performs? If a studio think a movie can challenge whoever its potential competition is and they like the release date, that's when its coming out.
There is a perception on the draw of films too. Recently noticed that Planet of the Apes moved from Memorial Day weekend to May 10th. Furiosa is also opening Memorial Day weekend. This way PotA gets a two week breathing space before Furiosa rather than competing with it. Going after Furiosa puts it smack dab in June and even stiffer competition.
Idk if it’s asking for a lot of work or not considering the delay of info, but I’d be curious to here a “cumulative worldwide opening weekend” where opening weekend in China+other countries are added up posthumously. Thought of this during the Dune v Godzilla analysis today. Thanks Dan!
Wait, are you kidding me?! "Chantal im Märchenland" is so popular, it gets mentioned on Charts with Dan?! I've seen the trailer and it was, without a doubt, one of the absolute greatest PoS trailers I've seen in years. It's beyond cringy and I hate that my fellow German movie goers even put up with this at all, let alone reward this idiocy with millions of dollars.
Yesterday's ranking video was awesome -- definitely worth watching. If you do any other retrospectives like that though, please include where the movie is available (trying to dig out some of that and it's death by searching)
Yes! I'm currently reading the book for someone like you excited for the movie releasing this week in theaters romance and religion faith-based movies like Christianity is becoming more prevalence in the mainstream❤
Sony has had a rough 1st half of 2024. They completely bumbled the release schedule with their two big movies. Madame Web was a January movie. Ghostbusters Frozen Empire was a mid February movie. I loved Afterlife but Frozen Empire was “its fine” level. Nothing bad or special.
Probably won't give it a serious worldwide take boost from Japan but GxK doesn't open there til April 26th I think. This weekend will be a good tell if it can come close to the 200 million domestic take. Hopefully it doesn't drop more than 50%
I think it will close around 175: the Friday to Sunday drop in its opening weekend was pretty strong, which means it's a quite frontloaded movie, so I would expect at least a 60% drop next weekend. But I hope it can reach 200 million!
@@beezer5623 That's possible! However, even the Friday to Saturday hold was not extraordinary. Maybe, because of Easter, I will give it a 185 million final total in the US, instead of my previous 175 😅
Good points of the box office performance Dan! I can’t believe this guy thinks Kong X Godzilla owes Godzilla Minus 1 $50 million from its opening weekend! th-cam.com/video/gLJcIdcydNc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=t7hN38LwCX_6Eo-E
Dan means that it has closed in the US. Moreover, last weekend Oppenheimer made only 2,57 million in Japan; usually movies have great legs there, but I don't see it making more than 12-15 million, so maximum 974-977 worldwide and 4 to 6 millions more in profit
while i love watching a new movie every weekend i thought studios would've learned their lesson from crowding march then there's almost nothing in april like why do studios hate april so much lol so much money to be made from the lack of competition, is it a spring break thing
Last April was the crowded month for me. This year March is the more crowded, though if the releases are not too limited, I am probably getting in 15-16 films in April. It is getting padded out with re-releases of older films. April till early May there are a bunch of Nolan films getting limited releases.
I feel like the keep making Ghostbusters stuff to sell merchandise. I don't have the numbers just a theory. Ghostbuster is one of my fav movies but man do I wish they made a tv show that was like a cross between Supernatural and the animated show. These new movies are just okay. The most supernatural thing in Afterlife was a Walmart that looked clean. Also, I heard that one Sunday Late Night with the Devil made 666,666 in gross but I'm not sure if that is just internet rumor.
Nolan's next movie will be a documentary where he hires some ex-cons to try to break into his house and steal all that money, while Tom Hardy and Christian Bale try to stop them.
i recommend people watch Dan's Godzilla/Kong ranking video. Really well done and well-thought. I'm enjoying it.

As for the crowded stacking of films, why would WB care how a Sony film performs? If a studio think a movie can challenge whoever its potential competition is and they like the release date, that's when its coming out.
WB wouldn’t care. I think Ghostbusters should’ve recognized the competition for the same market and moved.
Anyone remember Dan's King Of The Monsters box office rant on honest trailer commentaries? Good times.
Dan, I want to see Megalopolis here in North Carolina, no matter how crazy it is. Do you think it will get a wide release?
So much *better, authentic, real and genuine* than *Grace Randolph's* nonsensical biased loudmouthed box office videos. Bless you *Dan Murrell.*
She is stupid and so annoying

I have a playlist of only Ranked videos
@@DanMurrellMoviesOMG YES! Thank you! My Godzilla knowledge is really limited to recent ones but want to binge your top 10s from yesterday. Thank you!
Ready for the breakdown and the next Monsterverse movie!
Obviously, moviegoers decided to spend the weekend prepping for this week's Dan Murrell Kong and Godzilla movie ranking video.
Yea yea, great job on the numbers but that GODZILLA KONG video, *BANGA*
Can not recommend enough!
Nothing bad or special.
what were you doing in the amazon with constance webb.
I was studying spiders with her mom right before she died.
@@DanMurrellMoviesBut was it Morbin' time?
Monkey Man looks epic. Wasn't there a Hanuman movie recently too?
Probably won't give it a serious worldwide take boost from Japan but GxK doesn't open there til April 26th I think. This weekend will be a good tell if it can come close to the 200 million domestic take. Hopefully it doesn't drop more than 50%
I think it will close around 175: the Friday to Sunday drop in its opening weekend was pretty strong, which means it's a quite frontloaded movie, so I would expect at least a 60% drop next weekend. But I hope it can reach 200 million!
@@crestedargo4663 dont forget it was Easter Sunday so maybe that stopped people from going.
@@beezer5623 That's possible! However, even the Friday to Saturday hold was not extraordinary. Maybe, because of Easter, I will give it a 185 million final total in the US, instead of my previous 175 😅
@@crestedargo4663 let’s hope. The more the better chances we keep getting more content. 😁
@@crestedargo4663 It just CRUSHED it on Monday. Just checked the dailies on boxofficemojo. it did 7.7 million on Monday. that is awesome numbers.
Good points of the box office performance Dan!
I can’t believe this guy thinks Kong X Godzilla owes Godzilla Minus 1 $50 million from its opening weekend! th-cam.com/video/gLJcIdcydNc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=t7hN38LwCX_6Eo-E
Oppenheimer just opened in Japan though. So it seems too early to discuss closing for it
Dan means that it has closed in the US. Moreover, last weekend Oppenheimer made only 2,57 million in Japan; usually movies have great legs there, but I don't see it making more than 12-15 million, so maximum 974-977 worldwide and 4 to 6 millions more in profit
I love your Bucee stuffie on your shelf. From North Texas and Bucee's are super popular
Buc-ee's is essential when I'm driving to review a movie. Candied pecans are a must and sometimes brisket sandwiches are necessary!
I guess Dan hadn't escaped The American Society of Magical...
while i love watching a new movie every weekend i thought studios would've learned their lesson from crowding march then there's almost nothing in april like why do studios hate april so much lol so much money to be made from the lack of competition, is it a spring break thing
Nolan making $85mil for one movie is INSANE
That’s the value of taking big swings and cultivating a reputation for craftsmanship. It also helps that he wears so many hats along with Emma Thomas.
Nolan's next movie will be a documentary where he hires some ex-cons to try to break into his house and steal all that money, while Tom Hardy and Christian Bale try to stop them.
@@KeithFraser82 I'm in
didn't Oppenheimer just open in Japan? I know this because SNL made a joke about it.
Great show 👏🏾 👍🏼 🙌🏽 ❤️
