Thank you!! Not a rude question at all.... and I probably should have added my final thoughts into the video. I feel very blessed that my husband is mechanically minded when it comes to machines and is able to upgrade the machine we have to work how I want it to. If I was trying to upgrade it myself I would have gotten frustrated and wished I had gotten a more expensive user-friendly machine. So I think it just depends on how much the individual is willing to research, do on their own, and pay for the machine. That's why I insist on doing a lot of research before you buy. My husband did SO MUCH research in fact that he now believes he could eventually build one on his own... which would be awesome!

I use Illustrator for work and I recently drew some accessories for my Christmas house, porch fans, outdoor lights, squirrel feeder and a bird house. Seeing your process was very helpful for me. I'm mostly self taught and I'm sil cutting with hand tools.
Umm. I have been thinking about getting a laser cutter for when I start working on my dolls house simply because I would love to make all of it my self rather than buying someone else’s doors and window frames and such like but I think I will save up for a model that’s simpler to use😹😹😹 Thank you for showing your laser cutter it really does help to narrow down my options in the future 😊😊

This was cool to watch. I loved the glimpse of Stormy. The door was really neat. I think that it sounds like the captain might be a bit of a collector so it would actually make sense for him to have different doors for each space. Are you going to highlight any of the pieces like with a lighter brown or a golden brown or even gold? The sunburst might be interesting in gold just to show it off a bit. Just a thought. The captain’s quarters is turning out really neat and fun to watch you build and create. I love it. Are you going to create a captain doll to go in it or just leave that to everyone’s imagination? I love the idea of the gold highlights! I might wait until I have the majority of the interior done and be selective with the some gold. It would be a great touch I think! I am not sure about making the doll yet... Making a doll always is a risk of its not realistic enough ;)

Ara, that was so cool to watch. It looks like learning how to use the software is the hardest part. Inkscape drives me CRAZY! I love the layering effect. Since I can't afford a laser cutter I am going to try with my Brother Scanncut,
Thank you Carmenlita! As you could probably tell from the video I spend very little time in Inkscape because it can be frustrating. I like to get my design down in Photoshop and just do the vector stuff I have to do quickly ;) Let me know if it works with your Scanncut!

Thank you Daphne! You can also use the same process with the software and use a blade cutting machine like the cricut maker if that is better suited to your needs. They both use SVG's but just different cutting methods.

I have to admit that all of the computer stuff went way over my head but it was really interesting to see all the steps involved in creating a piece on the laser cutter. I love the way the door turned out and think it looks great in the Captain's Quarters but maybe with a repaint :)
Great video Ara. Very informative and interesting to watch. Re laser cutting, a thought for those who don't have a laser cutter (me included). I downloaded the free Inkscape program (had to watch a few TH-cam videos to be able to use it). I then design what I want and create the vector file. I then take it to a place that has a laser cutter and just get them to cut it for me. It is not a very expensive process and a lot cheaper than buying a machine.
Another spectacular video, Ara! I'm learning to make svg files for cricut maker, and you just helped me so much. Thank you! I love the door for the captain's quarters, and maybe you could add door hinges that match the handle.

Wow, it is a little bit harder than I thought it would be, but it's really cool how everything ends up so symmetrical and straight. I think the door would look great in the captain's den, and mismatched doors seems like a good idea, or at least different symbols on the circle in the design. Oh, and your dog is so cute!

Using a cricut is definitely a good way to go if you're not wanting to deal with the venting, ash, etc.... If I wasn't planning on making multiples of kits I might have considered the Cricut too (but I would be going through way too many blades!)👍 Thank you!

I would love a laser cutter for the detail and precision but I am thinking a Cricut would be better for someone who lives in a small apartment -- especially considering the ventilation requirements of the laser cutter. I think the door turned out fantastic Ara. I also think it looks fabulous as the Captains door, I would paint it the same color brown as the walls but I would paint the sun burst either with one of your metal paint colors i.e. bronze, gold, silver or you could just do a yellow or orange just to make it pop a bit. one of the metallic ones is what i would use. Okay, so i just paused long enough to read julia trents comments about painting the starburst, lol. I really got a great feel for the process you go through just to make a door, I can't imagine what it would take you to create an entire house, like the Addams family house if you had to have it done quick. Thanks for letting us into your brain for the building of this door.:)

Bentley House Minis a two floor house whit 3 and a 1/2 rooms whit working doors. all walls in foamboard and thick cardboard floors. Made the bottom already just need to wallpaper it, make a fancy front door and frame the main plastic (no glass) window 🤣 she didnt want one from the store due to cost and non real looks.
Ara fabulous info! I have been using adobie software before it was available to the public. I have a few "pro-tips" 1. in the upper left corner where the ruler meets, click & hold to bring your 0 point where you want it. Double click it to change from inches to MM. 2. Double click on the rectangle or circle tool to bring up a window to size your object exactly what you want. 3. Holding the cont. & alt. Keys at the same time will change your curser to the hand tool to move your view. Just a few shortcuts that I can remember, my versions are 10 year old but they generally don't change the shortcuts keys as the upgrade. Plus I have never tried the "non-professional" versions avaliable I just keep an old computer to keep mine working 😃.

Good for the Captain's door. It's just fancy enough to work. However, it would be good to get into a rough and tumble pirate's head a little when creating a pirate's chamber. I think you should stick a dagger or two in the door, as if the Captain sometimes throws daggers/knifes into the door whenever he's unhappy (or maybe to pass the time). Maybe when his bosun gives him some bad news. lol. As the bosun exits, the Captain tosses a dagger at the door in anger. Tells a bit of story and shows off a bit of the pirate life/attitude in the room. Where pirates dwell, there's bound to be "battle damage" to furniture, doorways and the floors.
Great idea! I don't think the Captain is a pirate himself but that doesn't mean he hasn't gone up against some pirates in his time :) We can definitely put some door gashes to show a little history and age to the piece!
Nice video, if you made each layer like a stencil, where all the little pieces have tabs or points of contact it might be easier to assemble. The top layer may always have too many small pieces spread too far apart to make a single piece from, but the green layer you had might have worked well as one piece.
Great video! I'm thinking of saving up for a GloForge since I wouldn't have to do much accessorizing and GloForge seems to come with presets that I would need. Unfortunately at my age, I don't have the patience or time to do a lot of trial and error (a little is fine). I think a laser would be the perfect complement to my Cricut Maker and my miniature addiction.

Fyi... inkscape and gimp are totally free... inkscape is a vector program like illustrator and gimp is a roster drawing program like photoshop.. both are very popular and tons of tutorials online
What is that white material you cut? I am using mostly wood for cutting, but this material seems an alternative for some projects. Thank you in advance for your answer. For air assist pump - make it hang with piece of wire - much less noise.
Thank you for the tip! The material is called mat board. It's the stuff that they use to create a mat around framed artwork. It can be found at a lot of craft shops and framing stores. I like it because it's cheaper than wood at that thickness and a lot more durable👍
That sure was interesting. As much as I would love to have a laser cutter I think my computer skills are not up to par. I see I would probably have issues. That's what happens when our kids grow up and move out. They arent around to teach us new technologies. So I will live vicariously through you if that's ok.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) that particular laser cutter isn’t available on Amazon, maybe it’s sold out, but it had the specs. I’m a whiz in Illustrator so making SVG files is super easy for me- just a matter of coming up with the ideas! I’ve worked with vinyl plotters in the past, I’m still considering all my options... Matboard is the material they use around artwork in frames. It's the stuff they use to put a mat around the art. It can be found in most stores where they do frame work :)
Hi there! Im a new subscriber, I love your channel! This was a really great overview. I plan on utilizing my local maker space laser cutter because I don’t have the space or proper ventilation in my studio apartment to get my own unfortunately... I was wondering if you knew about Adobe Illustrator? It’s strictly a vector software, but you can layout the shapes and designs, and trace shapes like you did in photoshop elements, but you wouldn’t have to do the second step in Inkscape. Illustrator is a one stop shop! Once you complete your design and layout the individual parts, just set each shape to no fill and keep the outlines, then save as an svg file and you’re done! It’s the software we use for all the laser cutters. It would save you a ton of time in the process! Hopefully this helps!

I wonder if venting the laser cutter out the window makes the neighbors complain?? Especially if you live in an area where the houses are close together. I love that door!!! I have walked outside and checked and you can barely hear anything. Also the campfire smell that typically comes with cutting the materials is barely noticeable and quickly fades. No complaints so far! Thank you for checking out my channel and welcome!! :)
I run my vent tube up above the roof so that the wind can carry it away. Some materials are extremely stinky (plastics) and others are no worse than having a wood stove with a chimney (like wood, paper and cardboard). You could capture the smoke and filter it but that's pretty expensive and you have to buy filters a lot. I prefer to let it just blow away.
That was so interesting! Thank you for the look-through the process. What are the consumables that would be needed for this laser cutter? I realise you use cardstock and other base materials but does the machine ‘use up’ any parts associated with the laser, pumps or fan extractors etc?
Good question! Besides the materials that I cut there are not many consumables for this machine. The laser can wear out at some point but it is after much use. The reason I wanted the laser cutter over the cricut machine is because I would have to replace blades much more often than replacing the laser. The only other thing I can think of is that we use a few drops of anti-fungal stuff in the water bucket to keep mold from growing between the times we change the water out. And of course there'st he electricity it takes to run it. I hope that helps :)
Hey, I love your work but I've never commented before. I'm doing so now to tell you that you really should remove the metal from inside the machine. If everything goes well, the only risk you run is probably damaging your material a bit on the backside due to the laser reflecting off the material, but complications would range from fire to damage to your eyes etc. We had one defective machine with a tiny space in the housing where the laser beam escaped and burned a tiny hole in the wall - which means it would have burned skin if anybody passed through the beam.. These accidents are not super probable, as there is material covering the metal, but if you'd ever make a mistake and run the laser over the metal alone, the reflection could do all the rest and also damage your machine. On a fun note, experiment with engraving levels to achieve actual 3d "cuts". I've had great results with running several light engravings similar to how you would dip dye a gradient, if that makes sense. It creates a varying depth and if calculated well can give a 3d relief type result, like you would get with cnc routers. Again, I love your work, great, love your channel.
Thank you for the kind words and the insight on the machine Cansu! It sounds like you have a lot of experience in using them. The piece of metal we have in there is not reflective but I will definitely do a couple tests and double check we are running the machine safely. I need to have something under the material other wise the pieces fall down into the machine and the laser passes over and marks them again. Any suggestions on a different material that could go under the matboard I use? As I am still experimenting I am open to any ideas! Thank you!
The drag chain is used to keep the air compressor tube out of the way; otherwise, the laser would burn through the tube. If you don't replace the laser head you can't use the air compressor any way and so the drag chain isn't needed. If you decide to add a secondary (red) laser for laser tracking purposes, the drag chain would also keep the wires out of the way.
@@BentleyHouseMinis I made those projects with my plotter before. Cut cardboard pieces 4-5 times and glued them together. In the end its nearly like plywood with2-3mm thickness. A lasercutter wil make this much faster.

Ara, that was so cool to watch. It looks like learning how to use the software is the hardest part. Inkscape drives me CRAZY! I love the layering effect. Since I can't afford a laser cutter I am going to try with my Brother Scanncut,

Thank you Daphne! You can also use the same process with the software and use a blade cutting machine like the cricut maker if that is better suited to your needs. They both use SVG's but just different cutting methods.

Great video Ara. Very informative and interesting to watch. Re laser cutting, a thought for those who don't have a laser cutter (me included). I downloaded the free Inkscape program (had to watch a few TH-cam videos to be able to use it). I then design what I want and create the vector file. I then take it to a place that has a laser cutter and just get them to cut it for me. It is not a very expensive process and a lot cheaper than buying a machine.

Great video! SAFETY tip, do NOT use the galvanized metal as a base, the burning galvanization is very toxic, use a non-coated metal instead. :)

Wow, it is a little bit harder than I thought it would be, but it's really cool how everything ends up so symmetrical and straight.
I think the door would look great in the captain's den, and mismatched doors seems like a good idea, or at least different symbols on the circle in the design.

Thank you for taking the mystery out of creating SVG files and laser cutting machines. I would most likely use a CriCut machine instead of a laser cutter for my own purposes. Great job!
Using a cricut is definitely a good way to go if you're not wanting to deal with the venting, ash, etc.... If I wasn't planning on making multiples of kits I might have considered the Cricut too (but I would be going through way too many blades!)👍 Thank you!
From a professional standpoint for making kits the laser machine is the best way to go. I’m sure your kits will be very popular.

If you use rubber bands and hover it with rubber bands it will drastically cute down the sound of the vacuum pump.. do it like a microphone stand
I think the door turned out fantastic Ara. I also think it looks fabulous as the Captains door, I would paint it the same color brown as the walls but I would paint the sun burst either with one of your metal paint colors i.e. bronze, gold, silver or you could just do a yellow or orange just to make it pop a bit. one of the metallic ones is what i would use. Okay, so i just paused long enough to read julia trents comments about painting the starburst, lol. I really got a great feel for the process you go through just to make a door, I can't imagine what it would take you to create an entire house, like the Addams family house if you had to have it done quick. Thanks for letting us into your brain for the building of this door.:)

Bentley House Minis a two floor house whit 3 and a 1/2 rooms whit working doors. all walls in foamboard and thick cardboard floors. Made the bottom already just need to wallpaper it, make a fancy front door and frame the main plastic (no glass) window 🤣 she didnt want one from the store due to cost and non real looks.

Ara fabulous info! I have been using adobie software before it was available to the public. I have a few "pro-tips"
1. in the upper left corner where the ruler meets, click & hold to bring your 0 point where you want it. Double click it to change from inches to MM.
2. Double click on the rectangle or circle tool to bring up a window to size your object exactly what you want.
3. Holding the cont. & alt. Keys at the same time will change your curser to the hand tool to move your view.
Just a few shortcuts that I can remember, my versions are 10 year old but they generally don't change the shortcuts keys as the upgrade. Plus I have never tried the "non-professional" versions avaliable I just keep an old computer to keep mine working 😃.

Good for the Captain's door. It's just fancy enough to work. However, it would be good to get into a rough and tumble pirate's head a little when creating a pirate's chamber. I think you should stick a dagger or two in the door, as if the Captain sometimes throws daggers/knifes into the door whenever he's unhappy (or maybe to pass the time). Maybe when his bosun gives him some bad news. lol. As the bosun exits, the Captain tosses a dagger at the door in anger. Tells a bit of story and shows off a bit of the pirate life/attitude in the room. Where pirates dwell, there's bound to be "battle damage" to furniture, doorways and the floors.
Great idea! I don't think the Captain is a pirate himself but that doesn't mean he hasn't gone up against some pirates in his time :) We can definitely put some door gashes to show a little history and age to the piece!

Nice video, if you made each layer like a stencil, where all the little pieces have tabs or points of contact it might be easier to assemble. The top layer may always have too many small pieces spread too far apart to make a single piece from, but the green layer you had might have worked well as one piece.
Great video! I'm thinking of saving up for a GloForge since I wouldn't have to do much accessorizing and GloForge seems to come with presets that I would need. Unfortunately at my age, I don't have the patience or time to do a lot of trial and error (a little is fine). I think a laser would be the perfect complement to my Cricut Maker and my miniature addiction.
I like the look of the door but I don't think it fits the captains cabin. Possibly the oval could be representative of a globe or a compass?

Fyi... inkscape and gimp are totally free... inkscape is a vector program like illustrator and gimp is a roster drawing program like photoshop.. both are very popular and tons of tutorials online
What is that white material you cut? I am using mostly wood for cutting, but this material seems an alternative for some projects. Thank you in advance for your answer. For air assist pump - make it hang with piece of wire - much less noise.
Thank you for the tip! The material is called mat board. It's the stuff that they use to create a mat around framed artwork. It can be found at a lot of craft shops and framing stores. I like it because it's cheaper than wood at that thickness and a lot more durable👍

That sure was interesting. As much as I would love to have a laser cutter I think my computer skills are not up to par. I see I would probably have issues. That's what happens when our kids grow up and move out. They arent around to teach us new technologies. So I will live vicariously through you if that's ok.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) that particular laser cutter isn’t available on Amazon, maybe it’s sold out, but it had the specs. I’m a whiz in Illustrator so making SVG files is super easy for me- just a matter of coming up with the ideas! I’ve worked with vinyl plotters in the past, I’m still considering all my options... Thanks again!

Matboard is the material they use around artwork in frames. It's the stuff they use to put a mat around the art. It can be found in most stores where they do frame work :)

Hi there! Im a new subscriber, I love your channel! This was a really great overview. I plan on utilizing my local maker space laser cutter because I don’t have the space or proper ventilation in my studio apartment to get my own unfortunately...
I was wondering if you knew about Adobe Illustrator? It’s strictly a vector software, but you can layout the shapes and designs, and trace shapes like you did in photoshop elements, but you wouldn’t have to do the second step in Inkscape. Illustrator is a one stop shop! Once you complete your design and layout the individual parts, just set each shape to no fill and keep the outlines, then save as an svg file and you’re done! It’s the software we use for all the laser cutters. It would save you a ton of time in the process! Hopefully this helps!

I have walked outside and checked and you can barely hear anything. Also the campfire smell that typically comes with cutting the materials is barely noticeable and quickly fades. No complaints so far! Thank you for checking out my channel and welcome!! :)
I run my vent tube up above the roof so that the wind can carry it away. Some materials are extremely stinky (plastics) and others are no worse than having a wood stove with a chimney (like wood, paper and cardboard). You could capture the smoke and filter it but that's pretty expensive and you have to buy filters a lot. I prefer to let it just blow away.
That was so interesting! Thank you for the look-through the process. What are the consumables that would be needed for this laser cutter? I realise you use cardstock and other base materials but does the machine ‘use up’ any parts associated with the laser, pumps or fan extractors etc?
Good question! Besides the materials that I cut there are not many consumables for this machine. The laser can wear out at some point but it is after much use. The reason I wanted the laser cutter over the cricut machine is because I would have to replace blades much more often than replacing the laser. The only other thing I can think of is that we use a few drops of anti-fungal stuff in the water bucket to keep mold from growing between the times we change the water out. And of course there'st he electricity it takes to run it. I hope that helps :)

Hey, I love your work but I've never commented before. I'm doing so now to tell you that you really should remove the metal from inside the machine. If everything goes well, the only risk you run is probably damaging your material a bit on the backside due to the laser reflecting off the material, but complications would range from fire to damage to your eyes etc. We had one defective machine with a tiny space in the housing where the laser beam escaped and burned a tiny hole in the wall - which means it would have burned skin if anybody passed through the beam.. These accidents are not super probable, as there is material covering the metal, but if you'd ever make a mistake and run the laser over the metal alone, the reflection could do all the rest and also damage your machine. On a fun note, experiment with engraving levels to achieve actual 3d "cuts". I've had great results with running several light engravings similar to how you would dip dye a gradient, if that makes sense. It creates a varying depth and if calculated well can give a 3d relief type result, like you would get with cnc routers. Again, I love your work, great, love your channel.
Thank you for the kind words and the insight on the machine Cansu! It sounds like you have a lot of experience in using them. The piece of metal we have in there is not reflective but I will definitely do a couple tests and double check we are running the machine safely. I need to have something under the material other wise the pieces fall down into the machine and the laser passes over and marks them again. Any suggestions on a different material that could go under the matboard I use? As I am still experimenting I am open to any ideas! Thank you!

Ara how necessary was the drag chain?
I think it is what keeps things up an out of the way of the laser. I would have to check with the husband though.
The drag chain is used to keep the air compressor tube out of the way; otherwise, the laser would burn through the tube. If you don't replace the laser head you can't use the air compressor any way and so the drag chain isn't needed. If you decide to add a secondary (red) laser for laser tracking purposes, the drag chain would also keep the wires out of the way.

@@BentleyHouseMinis I made those projects with my plotter before. Cut cardboard pieces 4-5 times and glued them together. In the end its nearly like plywood with2-3mm thickness. A lasercutter wil make this much faster.
