I remember playing a siege battle with some friends in which I defended a castle. The game went fairly well for my opponents until they reached the last level that I was defending with katana samurai on one side and katana hero on the other. They threw so many units at the katana heros that at one point one of them, out of frustration, called the unit “the disco bouncers”. I found it so funny and laughed so hard, I immediately named my on-line unit with the same name. I ended up wining the battle, btw, because although my hero’s were depleted and wouldn’t have resisted indefinitely, one of the enemy players mis-clicked and fired whistling arrows on the melee.
It shown how weak the Ashigaru really is outside of Yari wall, but its the anti infantry hero unit anyway. They did good enough. I wonder how good they are against the Ikko monk Hero.
did you ever do a archer unit vs the same archer unit in loose formation it would be interesting to see if the results would be diverent over diverent total wars
Yari Wall is very strong, but it's really not the magic universal 'I win' button you think it is. As long as you can out maneuver your enemy, you should almost always win a battle, especially a largely inflexible and cumbersome force like the phalanx-type Yari Wall. That's the reason hoplites and phalanxes for the most part barring pike and shot warfare fell out of style, and why the Greeks lost to Rome, they always lost handily to forces that could easily out-maneuver them.
Shimazu Toyosa tryed doing something like this in battle of Sekigahara. He and a few his men as rearguard vs 2000(If I good remeber). They all dies, but hit enemy general (so he retreat with his men).
The Shimazu was a clan of badass. Even the Shogunnate didn't want to deal with their shit and let them live (though i think they could definitely destroy the Shimazu). Though the name of that battle reminds me of a certain advertisement that has the name of the battle in the lyrics.
Their extreme distance to Kyoto and Edo also made it harder for the shogun to enforce too much. Plus their wealth from trade. In the end yes, they knew asking too much would be too expensive to be worth it
I'd be curious how much unit fatigue is playing into the Shimazu losses, here. Like, if it were possible to have them rest to full between each unit of ashigaru, how many fewer men would they lose?
Probably none since, because of a bug, fatigue only affect infantry morale and not their actual fighting strength. Well... To be precise, morale does affect the fighting abilities of a unit, but given the heroes have massive morale and were constantly winning, they were probably unaffected even with the debuff.

@@ForeverEternalAPEX Normally it is supposed to directly reduce the fighting stats of a unit, but because of a bug, it doesn't do that on infantry. Low moral also reduces the fighting abilities but way less than the fatigue debuff normally should (it is supposed to be something like -80% attack when very tired IIRC) and the issue is more about your units routing and thus, not fighting.
i mean if a guy with a sword gets close enough to you where your spearpoint wont hit him you're probably toast anyways, its 50/50 when you pull out your sword

No, surrounding doesn't guarantee a win in the older warscape engine and in order to make it "look good" they made it so that each individual can only fight one other individual at a time. So all fights are 1v1s. That is why fights can be so odd in warscape. I have been told enemies get stat debuffs if you have more friendlies nearby, but I can't confirm.
What I am not liking in this comparison is where the ashigaru seem to be in a loose formation, and not using their numbers to win (or try to). I will say however that the other videos I have seen form this channel are really nice.

the best thing to counter elite units like this is archer. Small number of troop in elite unit make them very vulnurable to ranged units.

Using spear wall and flanking, 3 ashigarus can very easily beat the hero (equivalent costs). Probably even 2 ashigarus is enough(with proper micro).
