I’m also a DC artist. I met Sean at the DC NYCC party a few months ago. After a couple of obligatory pleasantries, I said, “Enough of this comic book shit. Let’s talk about your Datsun.” We then spent about 15 minutes talking about our love of cars. It was very refreshing.
Fantastic interview! I had a moment of clarity listening to SGM. He seemed the liveliest whilst reminiscing on old image comics in terms of storytelling. 'The storytelling sucked, but man I loved it.' Then it hit me. The one thing more important than storytelling in comics is sales. "Hype art" equals sales. Gotta get back to it. These pencilers must get back to being show off guitar soloists.
Great episode! Sean Murphy is smart and talented. Well deserved success! Marvel needs to put him on Spidey 2099 - he is clearly a fan ha ha and it would be a perfect project for him.
God I love it when you guys tell the truth of the comics industry These people who are hell bent on tearing others down to try and elevate themselves. They are hacks, talentless hacks who are jealous of genuinely talented people
Wow ! No lie. This was one of the most inspirational and educational interview I have ever listened to. I am a writer (kinda ). I am in the process of creating what I believe in and this was a eye opener! Thank you mark. And Sean.
Damn this was great. If you could get all the best creators on here talking honestly about the industry it might really help comics for the better. This was refreshing. Also, maybe bring Bendis back on after he has had more time away from the big two.
Agree. I don't need over digitized coloring and super glossy slick paper. If it cuts the price by almost 50% sign me up. I will buy the Absolute editions for some.
I was really impressed with Sean Murphy’s work when I got into it recently, it’s pushed me to try and get into the comic industry myself. Thanks, Sean!
refreshing to hear you guys talk openly about the hyenas. some of the wort damage they did was cut off the communication line between old and new creators with a atmosphere of fear. all that is healing now though slowly but surely
@@christopherlevy6369 Nope. Nevermind. Just looked it up, and it was Scott Snyder who hired her. Not SGM. So I deleted the comment. What SGM did was pull the cover he did for Doug TenNapel though.
Man I enjoyed these conversations! Also, I feel that maybe Millar could be the one who bring Joe Madureira to make a comic book again? Or it’s just wishful thinking
My favourite actors were Robert Deniro, Sean Penn & Denzil Washington. I can now only watch one of these actors in anything. The other 2 have destroyed my enjoyment of viewing anything they act in due to their actions outside of movies these last few years. Can you guess which actor i still enjoy?
The importance of continuity depends. In an elseworlds/alternate universe like White Knight, knowing the history in depth isn't necessary, that's why Batman: White Knight shines. However, in the primary universe of publishers, a thorough knowledge of continuity and characters over time is absolutely essential for writers and editors, as that's why people buy 616 Spider-Man or Prime Earth Batman. People want the next part of the story of the character they've been following for years, often decades. As far as continuity affecting new readers, the direct market doesn't bring in new readers. But back when the newstand was a still a thing in the 80s, books tended to be new reader friendly even with (particularly at Marvel) a laser focus on continuity from editorial. New readers are brought in not by lack of continuity, but by captivating and accessible storytelling, which can be done tastefully without sacrificing the context of the broader history for the sake of more established fans.
I'd be happy if either of these dudes bought out IDW and turned the ship around. Might be a step down though. So glad to hear comics guys talk about real business.
If i was put in charge of Marvel or DC i would focus on the comic market outside the USA. i'd get a creative team from each part of the world and let them do a mini or something of a Marvel character in their country/city.
Great question on which creators managed to retire...not many..but I would say Perez (announced not too long before he passed), Doug Moench, and Roy Thomas come to mind. A nice mix of popular work in print, movie royalties, and probably good financial planning.
Batman white knight was that eras Batman story. It could link older readers into the story with new ones. I stopped buying weekly comics a few years ago now. I am not the audience I mean joker just gave birth I will just wait for a good crowd fund project to appear
Mark Millar, any chance of a Jupiter's legacy and circle deluxe hardcover/omnibus/library edition? You work with the greatest artist but i haven't found any Millar world titles in oversized collections.
Awesome interview by the way I want there to be a Sequel to Super Crooks where Johnny and Kasey are happily married and have 3 children 1 boy and 2 girls named Adam Bolt, Lexi Bolt, and Katie Bolt 🙏❤️
Reaasuring to hear that he hasn't read many comics, but is a creator. As someone who wants to write comics, I am the same way. I just read who I like and have fun with the stories
53:50 Its funny Murphy is scared of staying stale, it probably will happen if he stays getting influenced only by those 20 artists that he has behind his monitor. Kinda like a contradiction. Fascinating to see it live.
I’ve listened to this stream a few times. How to increase digital sales. Why not only offer the colored version in digital, send a print of the cover media mail “postcard” with a discount to buy a printed black & white book, or artist addition. Printing in color is more expensive anyways
You’re showing your secret high-brow side in this one, Mark (Arthur Miller reference, eloquent ‘hurt people try to hurt other people’ line). You’ll be moving to Hampstead next.
If most creative types do their best work in their 20s and 30s, then comics has a huge problem. It takes roughly 10 years for writers to establish themselves. Almost all of the big 2 writers are 30+
I agree we need Marvel and DC to start producing Tankōbon's and distributing them like Viz and others, but I think keeping the color is important for superhero's. Imagine reading a Green Lantern comic and having no color. The paper quality won't matter to get new readers into supeheroes, but the color will, even if they enjoy black and white Manga
Sean should go and read Britain's Warrior comic from 1982, that will show him what's what when it comes to Western comic art. Go look at what Gibbons and Dillon and Bolland were doing back in 1982! And many others too, John Bolton, Jim Baikie, David Lloyd. They were all Bolland-tier, putting out the finest British quality work. Warrior comics from Britain in 1982 make the Image comics from Murka in 1992 look like a sad, bad joke! Hilariously backwards and inferior. Hopeless! As ugly as can be. Ugly embarrassing rubbish. Only the lower intellects fell for the Image scam. It was widely acknowledged at the time (among upper intellects) that those comics sucked, and they certainly haven't gotten better with age. Warrior from 1982, on the other hand, is just majestic, awe-inspiring, jaw-dropping. Even now, forty years into the future. If Murka hadn't poached all the talent from Britain, it would 100% be Britain leading all of Western comics.

Sean Murphy’s White Knight books are great. They’ll be collected and talked about by fans for years.
Fantastic interview!

Love this channel and love Sean Gordon Murphy. Honestly, DC should just give Sean control of the entire company.
Endorsed! 💪

These conversations are the highlight of my TH-cam week. Please keep them coming.
Two of the best comic creators of the current era. Love this!
Mark thank you for amazing interview
I love this format of interviews, it reminds me that 90's docuseries "The Comic book greats" which was hosted by Stan Lee🧐
such a high quality conversation

The best one yet. Sean is always good.
I'm glad you are keeping this up.
SGM's idea about B&W tankobon size collections is the exact sort of idea (certain) American publishers need to try out.

Sean Murphy's Batman verse has been an awesome read. You can tell that he is a real batman fan.

Penn wants people who oppose fizer grafting onto your life thrown in the slammer. I'm gonna say Denzil is who you still follow.
Inside Man is a great Denzel flick
Another belter. Great stuff.
Mike Turner was also someone who did not know a lot about comics that was hugely popular. great interview. Sean is a fantastic artist.
I can't like this enough.
My IQ must've went up a few points from watching this. Really great interview.
What a creatively stimulating interview between two legendary comic creators. I'm trying to absorb as much of it as I can 🙌🔥
another great conversation, Mark. thank you.
Another great interview
Mark, I am loving every episode of this show! Your enthusiasm for comics gets me excited again.
I’d love to see you talk with Kevin Eastman and get some of your thoughts on TMNT, but I’ll tune in for each episode.
Thanks for another great interview.

Was just wondering this as well. I want to see many of his books in oversized releases.
Loved what he’s said about companies picking up Instagram artists. Congrats on the in crowd hire but you didn’t get a storyteller.
Catching this now, fingers crossed SGM talks Mark into doing Artist edition books since he hires the best artists

I think it's funny how comic conversations always loop around to politics and how every agrees its stupid and just loves comics

Yeah the aping of art styles is a american comic thing kinda sucks that your not allowed to have your own style without people ripping you off
