It's so hard to know, almost everyone's voice is modified in the studio or even onstage. When you put Karen's voice through the diagnostics, she basically had perfect pitch. In fact, she often was better live versus the recording. Definitely the most beautiful lyric contralto voices.

There could be; however, though we thought the studio stranglehold was bad, seems the new reality is worse, at least for big stuff. I wager there are truly fine voices and acts out there that rival this outfit, but we are only likely to find them at a very local, personal level. If you are searching, good luck to you.

For example, it isn't fair to compare the current Barbra Streisand with the late Karen Carpenter. Carpenter was at her peak while Streisand is decades past it. Even though she still has a spectacular voice.

Karen's alto voice was absolutely flawless. Her breath control, caramel smooth tone, intonation and the sheer feminine whisper to her voice - aswell as the trademark sadness that could be heard in her voice, made her both in a sense unique and absolutely breathtaking. Her voice was a knockout!
Very, very few artists stand out as exceptional and unique in their style whilst making the whole business of singing appear effortless; Patsy Cline, Linda Rondstadt, Sinead O' Connor, Dusty Springfield and above all of them Karen Carpenter to name a few.
Karen truly had, I believe the most beautiful voice of the last century. She wasn't a powerhouse singer with a seven-octave range - she just sang a song beautifully!

mbblover I concur my friend! Nat King Cole had the most beautiful tone to his voice. Nat's voice was as colourful as a rainbow - dipped in golddust. Karen, I could describe forever and a day, whilst at the same time, she was totally indescribable. Both said artists were sheer magic.

So well said and I couldn't agree more. Not only did you hear her sing, you felt her sing. My God, I miss her still today. As a young teenager, The Carpenters were some of the first albums I bought with babysitting earnings. I would sit and listen to her perfect vocals, trying in vain to duplicate them, having to be satisfied with harmonizing with her instead. She was wonderful, absolutely.
No one says it better than you, Chris. There are hundreds and maybe thousands of talented female singers in the last century, but if I had to, Karen is the only one that rises above them all.
Karen had a unique, uplifting voice that shall always echo in the hearts of those who love the Carpenters.
When I was a little girl, I use to pray to God to give me her voice.

I was a senior in high school and driving home from school when the news came over the radio she had passed. It wasn't cool for a guy my age back then to admit they loved their music, but I sure did.

When I was deep in my anorexia I used to listen to this and cry for what Karen would never have and for what I wasn't able to have either. Like Karen I also went into full arrest but did manage to survive. Many times I have had survivors guilt but I try to make the most of life now and help those still suffering. Full recovery from eating disorders is possible. I have been able to do it and so have many others. Please don't ever give up.

@@MusicLover-ij7vf - thanks. after 15 years of a severe eating disorder I no longer have eating disorder thoughts or behaviors. I do suffer physical consequences though of seizures , loss of gallbladder, digestive issues and multiple sclerosis. many people with severe long-term eating disorders have developed autoimmune disorders. I used to tell myself my eating disorder wasn't that bad but I just couldn't see clearly. Please don't fall for that trap. Eating disorders kill and have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness including depression

I'm in tears now though because I just found out yesterday the sister of an old college friend just died. I knew her well but it has been so long since I have seen her sister. not to sound religious oh, but it reminds me of the one lamb that was lost that Jesus went after. unfortunately it's one more that died from this horrific disease. If anyone reading this has even with they think are eating "issues", please get help. don't ever give up. Please. Recovery is possible. I have done it and so have many others. You can do it too

Her desire to drum was probably an act of condescension, because I am certain that she knew what a great singer she was. How could she not? And if I am right, why would she want to keep that beautiful voice from the rest of the world? Was she doing us a favor? If that was the case why did she take singing lessons? Most of her songs (to me) seems like she was longing for a relationship with that someone she had not found yet. She had the most soothing and calming voice. I grew up in a pub and I used to fall asleep upstairs in my bedroom to the sound of her incredible soothing angelic like voice on the Jukebox, Yesterday Once More, Top of the World! I was around 10 years old and listening to her voice made the World seem like a happy place then. Such a shame she died so young as I’m sure she would still be performing today!

I wish I could have met her, told her she was the best, she was real, she was really pretty, really special. She was only 8 years older than me. I would have married her if she said yes, we could have had children, and she would still be alive, and happy today. I truly regret that I never saw her perform live. I still vividly remember sitting at my work desk in 1983, hearing about her death. I was shocked. Thirty seven years later, today, I play Superstar and Rainy Days incessantly. RIP, lovely Karen.

I was a kid when she sung On top of the world which made me interested in them and looking forward to the song being played on the radio. Then for 8th grade graduation the graduates sung the song "We've only just begun" not even knowing she was having eating disorder that was in 1978. I don't know if the song came out that year for sure but we did a great job wowing the parents & grandparents.

31 years ago yesterday we all lost Karen. As time goes on, it hurts even more to hear her voice; so much music lost in all those years since. Her singing was unmistakable; everyone knew Karen's voice, it was so, so special. I hope the angels appreciate Karen's singing as much as we did.

I remember crying like a baby when word came that she'd died. I was a teen, and I was absolutely mesmerized by her voice.
Luck has nothing to do with it - it's faith in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross for our sins, but I won't grind my axe for too long. As to "your time coming", don't you feel it's accelerating exponentially? I sure do. When I was in my teens and twenties, things seemed to stay the same, for the most part. People I loved were always there. Now everything seems to change at a rapid pace, and many that I have loved are gone, and each day seems to be waiting for the shoe to drop, as opposed to optimism.

I agree. I watched a programme last night about Adele: the modern Goddess. I can admire her voice and its strength but I so don't like it. She strangles her vowels and, although her lyrics are vulnerable, and that is unusual in this age of female empowerment and overt sexuality, I don't feel it in her voice. I do in Karen's. OK, she does not write her own songs but her voice expresses every nuance of every song she sings.
I think it is difficult. Adele is lauded because she stands still and sings. Well, actually, most singers did that in the not-too-distant past: Carole, Dusty, Sandy, Cilla, Lulu, Karen, Linda, Olivia, Esther, Joni, Judy, Dionne, Janis, Bonny and others. They stood there in a dress or little top and trousers they might have bought from Dottie P and sang because they were singers. We seem to have lost that concept. To give Adele credit she has resurrected it but she can't touch Karen when it comes to nuanced emotion..

Her music, voice and personal story creates conflict with ones emotions. Makes you happy and sad at the same time and makes you wish you had a time machine so you could travel back in time to give her a hug and tell her you love her just the way she is!

I remember the day she died. When my mom picked us up from school, they announced it on the radio. Tragic!! Karen Carpenter has the most incredible voice. Nobody has ever come close to matching her vocal range. A unique and majestic gift to the world. Such a tragic loss !!!!!! Always miss you.

I used to listen to her tapes at night in, Vietnam, when I had the chance. She was a real source of solace for me, a contrast to the brutality and harsh conditions of war. Everything she ever recorded was tune and tone perfect. Her voice was a gift that was sadly taken away too soon.

First time I here this song since my childhood .It carried me 50 years back to the past , when I was amidst my beloved parents.

The greatest singer ever .....no more no less!! A voice beyond compare.
Had to pause for a moment when I told my listeners on KJAS the day she passed, then broke format and played about a half-dozen of Karen and Richard's best stuff. That voice, and how she and her brother multi-tracked themselves. She was one hell of a drummer, too, though the legendary Hal Blaine did most of the studio work. And damn, she was lovely. What drove her to think she wasn't, well, it was just terribly wrong. We lost her many years too soon.
It was probably a mistake to not let Karen track all the drumming. Of course there are better drummers than any drummer you can name, no one can be the absolute best other than Gene Krupa. Even if Hal is a better drummer than Karen, there's at least one thing Karen has in spades that Hal can never have, she sounds like Karen Carpenter playing the drums. On top of that, it sounds like a "Carpenter" playing the drums, and isn't that what the record is all about and why we bought it? On top of that, the incredible musical talent, taste, and judgment that made Karen the incredible singer that she was also came out in her drumming. Karen is a superstar, Hal Blaine is a relative nobody. Imagine how different the Beatles' tracks would be if Andy White had done all the drumming on record. Even if he's better (and he's not, Ringo sounds just as good), he is totally missing Ringo's unique style and personality.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is what perfection sounds like. By far my favorite song of all time. Karen is my favorite female singer but she still outdid herself of this one. She went hard! Easily the best song ever recorded in the history of mankind. I make no apologies for saying that.
