    Erebor and the events from "The Hobbit" as a whole are very underrated. Many fans don't realize how crucial they were for the war of the ring and the free peoples' victory.

      Even though "The Hobbit" was the first book from middle earth...the first story he wrote during WW1 was "The Fall of Gondolin(2018)". When I read that book, I loved it...the story told one of the biggest battles in the first age...a story hinted in The Hobbit...when they find the troll horde.
      The battle of five armies was always a favorite to read...with Beorn kicking some series Goblin/Orc butt!

      @@Alexs.2599 when Gandalf tells Frodo that his ring is the One in "Fellowship of the ring" he says that dragon fire can destroy a ring of power, but that there are no dragons left, in which the old fire is hot enough, so there were still dragons by the time of the war of the ring, but their fire was getting colder.

      If you're into gaming I can recommend a mod for Mount and Blade Warband known as the last days of the third age which let's you explore many regions from Rhovanion to Gondor as you lead a warband while also fighting up close either against Sauron or in service to the Dark Lord and White wizard who will make war upon each other once the Free peoples have been subjugated
      Also there's Battle for Middle Earth series
      And if that's not satisfying enough there's an upcoming mod for the sequel of Warband known as Bannerlord the upcoming mod is named Kingdoms of Arda

    Wonderfully done!! I especially appreciate your making it completely clear just why Thorin acted as he did - it's something that seems to just slip by so frequently, and I've had many a memorable debate with friends as to the real cause of his madness. With some folks asserting that ANY dwarf could fall into such madness, a weakness of their race; not something that's ever been supported in Tolkein's writings but, well...not everyone gets as detailed as you do, or cares to dig into the lore the way the fans here do.

    I always liked how tolkien had the dwarves trade with men for their food, and the men traded with the elves as well. It made a bunch of sense because 1) the dwarves physically couldnt farm, hunt, or fish underground 2)the dwarves would rather make fortunes mining and crafting than farm and 3) The elves couldnt be bothered to do all their farming. It was super fitting and created a reason for the towns from near erebor. The fact that dwarves are in a way dependent on external colonies for their food is a cool worldbuilding technique to explain why they dont just mine their way out of the story.

    2nd of Saurons northern armies defeated Erebor he would have gained a wealthy kingdom capable of great weapons and army production and a very important trading route as well, ot to mention a great fortress that's almost impossible to get into.

    I wonder what the fade of the dwarves was like in Erebor in the Fourth Age. Moria didn't have a human settlement right next to it, so the dwarves retreating over decades and being seen less and less often would not be noticed much, but It sounds like Dale and Erebor were more closely linked. You would think that at some point the humans in Dale would be aware that they hadn't seen a dwarf in Dale or even outside Erebor for months and would go to investigate. What would they find? Were the upper halls empty, and there was no trace where the dwarves had gone except maybe on some very still nights some men thought they heard the sound of picks and hammers on stone, but the following day there would be no sign of any dwarves. Did the king of the dwarves perhaps warn the human king of Dale that his people were about to begin a great underground migration that men could not join them on and that men should not try to enter the halls of Erebor anymore as traps were set to preserve the dwarves secrecy. Did the dwarven population shrink over time such that men just figured that the last dwarves in Erebor had died out over a few years, though in reality they had just slipped away to deeper places or gone back to the earth from which they came waiting for Eru. I always kind of wondered how the fourth age transpired and how knowledge of anything but men just faded. Were tomes of history lost in Gondor. Was the Red Book lost at some point? I can see where after the War of the Ring, once the survivors have all passed away and their grandchildren, oral history would be lost. Was written history purposefully destroyed or lost through some kind of "divine" accident like a library fire that wiped the main human archives at Minas Tirith.

      I really like the part about the dwarves' picks and hammers being heard during the night. I can imagine a mother telling her children a bedtime story about the greatest of the now abandoned dwarvish kingdom nearby before finishing with "Nobody knows what became of the dwarves, but some people say that at night you may hear the sound of their picks and hammers, delving in the hard stone, and bringing back the memories of the great, proud, and hardy folk that once called the Lonely mountain their home."

      The Dwarves believe that when they die, their spirits also go to the Halls of Mandos in a special section where they will await until summoned by Mahal (The Dwarven name for Aulë) where they would help him in the rebuilding of Arda following the 2nd Music of the Ainur.
      Personally, I think at some point the Dwarves realized their end was coming and shut themselves in, cutting all contact with the outside world. When I am indulging in flights of fancy, I like to imagine that someday we will discover one or more of the ancient Dwarven cities buried within our mountain ranges.

      @@istari0 great commentary! It would be cool to imagine Dwarven settlements unearthed and rediscovered. But in this reality, we are kept in the shadows concerning our own history! • @danelynch7171
      @danelynch7171 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@PYRESATVARANASI if we are lucky, we get almost 100 years. Most never get close to that. It's reasonable to think that after a thousand years, records are lost and tales are no longer told. Think of how many times the Mongols swept through an area and killed everyone who might be able to retell the stories of their past. How many times the romans burned all the records of the people they conquered. Imagine how much history was lost when the Europeans came to America and so many of the natives died off. There are great stories and long histories that have been lost entirely to our real life world. It's absolutely reasonable that, in this fantasy epic, whole races like the dwarves just vanished over time.

    Always been a huge fan of the dwarves so to have a whole video on Erebor is awesome. Thank you! A thought I had while watching was what exactly are the properties and powers of the dragons? Besides for there being cold and Fire drakes, do any possess magic abilities like Glaurung or was Glaurung able to express such power due to the working of Morgoth through him? Like are there any other dragons since that could petrify people (Turin) or wipe memories (Turins sister)?

      Good question. In The Hobbit, Smaug could influence others and had Bilbo, for a time, thinking that the dwarves would cheat him. That isn't quite like wiping Nienor's (sp?) memory, but it was a mental influence.

      @thebrowneyesofmandalore ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeynth7919 That’s a good point. Could be that originally the power was stronger but due to time it weakened. Maybe that’s why Smaugs hold and influence over Bilbo wasn’t as strong and potent as that of Glaurung. I don’t know if that satisfies me though. I makes me wonder, had Smaug got together with Sauron, perhaps that power would have been increased or regained. Makes an even greater terrifying win scenario for Sauron.

    I dont understand why people say the “Nerd” of the Rings is careless with the lore. I think he does a great job.

    Here's a film idea for WB, Tales of The War of the Ring: The Lonely Mountain. They go to the north and cover Dale and Erebor's rise to glory again after Hobbit and into their side of the war capping it off with the emissaries at Aragorn's crowning!

    • @leiflaitinen
      @leiflaitinen 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Doing so gives WB exactly what they love. Large-scale battles taking place during their most successful era of the films. You get a nice Osgiliath like battles in Dale, Pelennor fields/Helms deep like battles in front of Erebor's gate

    Two questions:
    Will you ever do a video for Frodo?
    Would you ever a video dedicated to the life of Tolkien?
