A+ off-season. You sent out 30ppg & brought in what could easily be 50+ ppg. Better shooting, better defending, better playmaking, better depth. It's also crazy that the likely Luka-solo lineup will probably be a lot of Luka/Klay/Naji/Maxi/DLive, which is huge... That lineup could win Gold at FIBA
That second unit could win lots of games w/o anyone from the top line. All of them have been NBA starters in recent years (except Maxi) Incredible job done by N Harrison with so few assets to work with.
Good off-season, Naji, Klay, Grimes solid upgrades over 3 players we moved. But SD who didn't want to be here getting picked up only to take away mins from Hardy & Exum? Still got Powell, Morris and Maxi with only Maxi giving something on the court. Omax not ready to backup PJ, who gave us nothing in the finials. Just dont see Luka and Irving repeating the numbers they put up last year. Naji & Klay will be our X factors to determine how far we go.
I think its not depressing as you said out loud it is. First of all, bench is really important not to be held to injury prone Exum or we dont know how he will look like Hardy. Dinwiddie is just an insurance to those two if they cant deliver. If they do, im sure a vet min guy will be happy to sit and be veteran. Secondly, its really not wise to write off everything a guy did because he played poorly against a super team in FINALS, which was a lot of our guys’s first meaningful playoff run. Tangable things we can count on are Luka-Kyrie performances, DLive growth and DLive-Gaff providing rim defense therefore good overall team D, Klay spacing/shooting bringing the offense top 1-5, PJ growth. Rest is x factors as you said. Whoever leaps between rest of the guys are good for us either way.
Look I'm not a Spencer fan but he clearly wanted to be on this team as he visited the Mavs FIRST before going to an LA game to meet with their GM. The Mavs most likely turned down his services because of how many guys were in the second unit thriving with their minutes increasing(Exum, Hardy, and Green) while also having money obligations on the books with THJ. Spencer most likely took offense with this rejection and said what he said but just in a passive aggressive manner while also hyping up the Lakers fanbase. If THJ wasn't on the roster at that time I guarantee that Spencer would've gotten signed. It just couldn't be done
I agree. Before Maxi got hurt against the clippers 80 percent of the time he had the highest plus/minus on the team. Him being on the floor makes a big difference.
Nothing casual when Luka has to bark at this Veteran just to be physical for rebounds (before injury) while in the playoffs. His contract doesn't justify him dropping 4 points per game average while getting more minutes than Gafford and Lively. That's the problem. Nobody would complain about Maxi if he played 15 minutes at most per game. It's the 20-25 minutes that ticks fans off
As of now the Mavs have done what they could. Done all the moves early so players get to know each other and workout. You can consider further moves after the season starts.
Feeling REALLY GOOD about the addition of Dinwiddie. He’s still got it and will be the ultimate security blanket for the 40 or so games Luka and Kyrie will likely miss. He’s a big shot maker and when we need a victory in Detroit or New Jersey late in the season to clinch a top 6 finish he will be able to turn it on without Doncic or Irving. He will make everyone better on offense. No more struggles on the road against inferior opponents.
Luka - Dinwiddie - Exum Kyrie - Grimes - Hardy Klay - Naji - Lawson PJ - Kleber - OMax Lively - Gafford - Powell is the best this team has looked in a long, long time
Dante's reached his Peak. Exum will get the DNPs and you've got to trade him. This is not going to be effective if you try to share the minutes; neither player would get any sort of rhythm/continuity. Same with what you saw when Maxi went out with the injury and Gafford + Lively got more playing time/rhythm. Separately, I don't believe Klay will be starting/finishing come playoff time. If anything, he starts, plays 1Q and 3Q and Naji takes over closing out both halves. Throughout Klay's career, much of his scoring comes in the 1Q and 3Q. Spencer Dinwiddie is proven with the Mavs. Not only the 30 points in a game 7 vs #1 suns in 2022 and the back to back game-winning threes (one vs the Cs!), Spencer popped off for 36 points in 2023 vs the suns when Luka got injured, is proven in grabbing the bull by the horns. Next game he goes off for 35 points. He averaged 23.8 ppg in his last 11 games as a Mav in 2023. Driving dunks, transition pull up threes/side-step threes/step-back threes/fadeaway threes at the end of the clock, getting to the FT line. He is already close/longtime friends with Kyrie Irving AND is Luka Doncic-approved. Dude is fearless dunking on bigs (Chet, Gobert, Embiid, others), great facilitator, did accomplish something noteworthy in LAL by improving his defense (game-winning blocks), in a broken laker system. Like Theo Pinson said--last year with LAL was NOT Dinwiddie. Brooklyn wanted him to facilitate, LAL didn't know what the heck they wanted (they wanted to wait for Bronnie). Dinwiddie brings swagger, fearlessness, versatility, confidence, credibility, clutch shooting and facilitation. Put the ball in his hands. You've got to trade Exum and another player by the trade deadline and bring in a big like Mo Bamba.
Remember the first few Gaff games where he couldn’t miss? I think something similar is gonna happen to Klay, like shooting 60% the first 10 games of the season for or something
It should not be lost on calling it a “B” grade for the additions that Grimes and Marshall were both among the league leaders is consistently drawing the other teams best player to guard
In the last seven months, Nico has added Dinwiddie, Grimes, Thompson, Marshall, Washington, and Gafford. By themselves that is a good team and it was added to the Mavericks existing stars without giving up too much of anything. That’s just crazy to think about….
If they can get extensions done on Gaff and Grimes(if he plays to his potential) then it can also give Luka running mates that are his age or younger while staying in competitive mode in the Western Conference. People gush over OKC's young bevey of riches but the Mavs aren't far behind in that regard as well.
@@beastscale1892 Kyrie and Klay are pretty old and there's no telling when they'll decline to the point where it prevents the team from winning. Maybe they get 3 years, maybe they get 1. Thinking back, if Donnie Nelson had not been overruled in drafting Giannis, Nico may never have been hired (but Dirk may have had another chance at a title).
We’ll see, but if Klay performs as expected (hoped), it is an A+ in the honors tract. Mavs have never had 3 All Star caliber players in its 43 year history. No washed up vets or stiffs anywhere on the roster.
My question is what GM has come in as a first time GM and done more for a team than Nico? Nico turned this team into an around almost instantly. People fake him for JB but I can’t do that. JB made his decision by the time nico could offer anything as a new GM. And if you blame nico for that then you have to praise him for the trade deadline that got us to the WCF in his FIRST YEAR as gm. Revamping a roster without much to play with,2 WCF in 3 years and a finals appearance? Nico has to be EOY this year. He told us we’d finally have a seat at the table and we’ve been scarfing down food and flipping the table when we’re finished.

28:00……if you truly want to understand the “Doncic affect” just check out the career of Spencer Dinwiddie. In the 76 games with Luka he shot 437-937 (47%) from the field and 180-445(40.4%) from 3. FOR THE REMAINDER OF HIS CAREER he’s been 1904-4716 (40%) FROM THE FIELD, one of the worst percentage in basketball over the last 10 years and 678-2119(32%), one of the worst percentages from 3 among guards. Plainly put he would have been SEVENTH in 3Pt accuracy last year (40.5%) just behind Kyrie and Steph had he maintained his percentage he had with Luka in 2021 and 2022. If these numbers hold up and Klay is anything close to the player he was in 2023 (41.2 from three, 2nd in 3pointers made 4.4) this team will be the best offense in the West.
