SO THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT! We've just ripped out coving like this, absolute nightmare!!!! Destroyed the wall and the ceiling, required £1000 over 4 days of repairs and prep before we could skim the room.
You have great skill, but I recommend people only use coving like this if they want it until they're dead...and they have loathing and contempt for any future owners of their property after they're dead.

@@macplastering I’ve just taken a load of original cornice down. It was in lime but layered like you’ve done it. I imagined them using a moulded wooden float with a mitre on either end to get into the corners but then I’ve never seen one. Skills like these are worth good money these days. If you moved to London you’d have work coming out of your ears and be a rich man, although your arms would never forgive you.

@@macplastering yeah, I’m trying to save a big cornice about 300x300mm (or somewhere about) and two busts or female heads supporting an arch but the surface is degrading so it’s a tricky one. I’ve looked online for replacements but no joy. They’re heavily painted so I’m using a heat gun to remove most of the paint and then dry stripping with small tools by flicking the paint off but the chins have fallen off and had to be reglued on both the heads plus other bits and bobs. It’s been a case of strip fill sand fill strip fill sand, like you’re just going around in circles. Itried SBR on one of them but now it’s just got a coat of SBR over the crumbly surface. It hasn’t really stabilised it at all. Ive taken down the lath and plaster ceiling and I’m trying to keep the cornice so I’m having to saw the lathes close to the cornice but because the cornice is fragile the movement of sawing the lathes will break chunks off which then have to be reglued, filled and sanded as I go. Then all the lime plaster on the walls is cracked in large patches so needs removing and patching back in for the final skim. They’re the last bits of original character left in the building so I’m trying to save them.
