Small fun fact about costco. One of their past CEOs tried to raise the price of the hotdog and soda, and the board of directors fired that CEO for trying.
The story I heard was that a member of board of directors, in semi-jest, threatened the CEO-which lead to the CEO to decide to buy a sausage factory and cut costs there. (Could be a different CEO, dunno)
Costco’s Co-Founder Told The Company's CEO He'd Kill Him If He Raised The Price Of The Chain's Hot Dogs, the CEO and Board found a way to keep the cost the same, they now make their own hotdogs and sale the surplus to other grocery stores at a profit.
Costco hotdogs are a loss leader. They intentionally lose money on them because they bring people in. Who doesn't love a Costco hotdog? All beef and so yummy.
I LOL’d so hard when he froke out about the ground beef price 🤣 This should help: It’s $3.99 PER POUND - not per package. Those were at least $20-$30 each. The “Jet Blower” is a LEAF blower. Anyone can get a membership. You just sign up online or in-store and pay the annual membership fee. Easy peasy :) It’s called an “everything bagel” because it has a mix of common toppings. Usually it’s garlic flakes, onion flakes, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and kosher salt. Chicken and apple sausages are, in fact, as fantastic as they sound. America is the land of leftovers. Whenever we cook, there is usually extra and we save it and eat it the next day or even couple of days. The $1.50 hot dog & drink combo is THE BEST. The hot dogs are *DELICIOUS* and you get free refills on the drink. The pepperoni pizza slices are my favorite - they’re huge and always taste great. They also have great fruit smoothies and ice cream at the snack bar (also super cheaply priced)
I keep forgetting that you have to say free refills to non-Americans. That's one American thing I am too used to, the fact that you expect everywhere that serves soda to have free refills.
This plus the person above that yells the response to the screen. Only thing to add is that Costco is generally cheap. Everything is sold in such bulk that the items are expensive, but you get TONS of it.
If you have a large family or a bit of time and a large freezer, or an event that you are hosting, shopping at Costco is probably one of your favorite places to shop. Otherwise, you would probably shop at another store most of the time and just go with a friend or family member as a guest of their membership. You can get a variety of items from Costco.
Costco is legendary for the hot dogs and pizza. It's good food, and a perfect way to end a shopping trip! Costco has not raised prices on the food for years, and it's good quality.
The OG owner of costco threatened actual violence on anyone who dared try raising the price of the hotdogs. XD I don't have the link, but it's a pretty famous story.
The $1.50 hot dog and drink has been the same price since Costco started. And it's good! And big! It's what is called a loss leader. Same as the roasted whole chicken. They lose money on it but it brings people in to the store. Here in the US it's easy to get a membership card. You don't have to be a business but it does cost $60 for a years membership. Love love love Costco but you can't use it for all your grocery shopping. Sizes are too big.
@@gaillyons9156you can get the 3 pack of grass fed at Walmart for a lower price per pound than $7.99 (I don't know about the lean, we like a little more fat 😊). But we are in Michigan so maybe your cost would be more depending on location.
Costco is unique in that they always have the rotisserie in the back, and always keep it at a low cost. This is so that it forces the customer to go through the entire store to get to the chicken, and on the way they would end up seeing and picking up other items. This is no joke. It's all psychology.
It's marketing! Which is also why other stores make you walk all around them for your produce, dairy, and meat. So that you go by so much other stuff and displays of things you don't need. If we stick to shopping the outlying section around the store we will be healthier!
But you also don't typically go to a place like this for only one thing. Our family has a monthly stock up for canned goods, and they have the best holiday sales on electronics.
The hotdog is my favorite thing about Costco lore. The founder once said when presented with the fact they were losing money on the hotdog, and I quote "If you raise the fucking price of the hotdog, I will kill you. Figure it out." That man is a hero. God bless him.
Never been to a Costco. We don’t have one in my area, but we do have a Sam’s Club. Idk how the prices compare to Costco, but I’m guessing they’re fairly similar…
I do Sams Club because it's closer. Sams has two cooler rooms. One with the milk, eggs, and creamer, and one with produce, berries, etc. The milk room is much colder. On a hot day it's great to just go into that room and breathe. So cold. There's usually a heat exchanger dripping cold water somewhere in the room. Stand under there and let that ice water slowly drip right onto your back. Yessssss.
@@GeorgeOrwell-yz6zx I’ve been saying the same thing for years. I’ve always thought Sam’s club was better than Costco. Sam’s Club also came first yet everyone thinks Sam’s Club copied Costco. I would love for him to react to that as well.
Even as an American, the amount of EVERYTHING at Costco or SAMs club still amazes us. I’ve gotten fun colored contacts, filled a prescription, bought tires, a deal on 3 different size TVs as a bundle, done all the grocery shopping, had lunch, tried all the food samples, bought everything I needed for a beach vacation, books, and bought a giant trampoline all in one go. Everything is bundle prices. In my broke 20s, me and 1-2 friends would all go shopping together and then go home and split everything. No one needs 3 giant bottles of ketchup, a 10 pound pack of ground beef, 4 huge bottles of aspirin, 5 pounds of mangoes, etc. It’s already cheap in bulk, but when you go and buy everything you need and split the bill 3 ways, you get what you need for suuuuuuper cheap. Without splitting the bill, there is no way you’re walking out of there without spending a minimum of $200-$300. But I’ve spent $2000 on everything I needed food wise the first time my husband and I moved into to a new house together. I bought a pack of 5 enormous rolls of tin foil on that trip. It took 7 YEARS for us to finish those rolls! As a now almost 40 year old mom, with 3 kids, who is the neighborhood mom, where like 12 kids being at my house on a daily basis is normal, we now actually need and use all the crazy bulk items. side note: fir that doomsday comment, they literally sell doomsday type packages. Shelf stable food that will feed a family of 4 for years at a time in case the world ever goes to shit. They’re literally apocalypse intended emergency food supplies. Food stays good for decades and can sustain you for different increments of time depending on the bundle you buy.
You just need a gift card to use it if you aren’t sure about a membership. Also don’t need a membership for the pharmacy. So if Lewis went he could get a $25 gift card and go.
@@CKaffeineIVStat yeah gift card is definitely the way if he only wanted to go for content as opposed to actually shopping there regularly (i think i heard someone say there aren't very many in the UK so it might be a long drive for him)
@@Syyntax861 I was thinking when he visits the US. But get a cheap gift card and see if the things at UK one are worth the membership. Could always share one with friends and go shopping together when someone needs to go.
I’m actually an exclusive member because my parents own a business. The difference is the card is a debit or credit card that is connected to a bank account. I buy a lot ok. My card is $120 a year. But I do get some freebies every year.
I had a cookout last week. 12 sirloin beef patties 12 bratwurst 3 large bags of chips A pallet of 35 coke cans 3 lbs of grapes 3 lbs of strawberries 1 whole watermelon 2 lbs of cheddar Ketchup, mustard, BBQ 12 burger buns 12 sausage buns Less than 80 bucks at Costco
Any party we have we go to costco for the food, unless we are going to go ahead and buy a half pig or cow from the local butcher - which usually runs us around $1500 for a half cow and the meat lasts around 6 months in the deep freezer. But we usually go through it before then. We are doing a seafood boil for father's day and I am getting everything from Costco.
@@HazyHippieDamn!!! I'm spoiled I guess. I have 2 cousins and a 3rd cousin that own cattle ranches here in Montana. I just help with the branding season and can get a whole steer for $1200 cut and wrapped.
It's so easy to get a membership card, just go inside Costco to a customer service and buy it there. You are a member right away. By the way, Costco products are not expensive to buy is because we want the customers to come back over and over again. I work at Costco and I love It.
Membership adds to the low pricing. Costco can go in and buy in bulk because they have a membership base that helps them negotiate, but they also have their own store brand (Kirkland) that is basically the same as name-brand stuff.
Costco rotisserie chicken is actually good. The reason its so inexpensive is that Costco has their own chicken ranch, so they have quality control and all the other benefits associated with it.
They use it as a lure, they KNOW it's super cheap and probably costing them money but it's worth it. If I ask my husband to go grab a chicken, he comes back with more! That is their plan!
The food is individually packaged inside the boxes so you don’t have to cook all of it at one time. The hamburger for $3.99 was per pound. That was several pounds of meat so the actual price was more for the package. Some of the things are low cost and some are higher, but Costco carries the higher end quality products so that is why it would be more expensive on some things than Walmart. The cans of green beans would be something that a restaurant would buy. I have bought the large cans and then repackaged and froze the food I didn’t cook immediately. The TV was an LG brand which is a higher end brand. Walmart sells the 65” TVs for about $450, but it is a lower end brand. Still it is a good tv. I renovated my bathroom and even bought a high end toilet and bathroom vanity. Costco has a great return policy. One other thing, their apple pie is AMAZING!
If there's one thing Costco has perfected, it's getting its customers to buy way more items than they originally planned to buy. This happens to me all the time and the super awesome thing about Costco is - I don't feel guilty when I do it.
The $5 rotisserie chicken and the $1.50 hot dog and soda are famous loss leaders at Costco. The store loses money on each one, but they keep the prices low to draw in customers. The prices of those two items hasn’t changed in decades. The hot dog and soda combo is £1.50 in the UK, so a bit more than the US, but still cheap.
Sams Club has similar offerings. I tasted them back to back and I'd say the Sams chicken is about 98% as good as Costco. Costco's was a TEENSY bit better. Not worth driving an extra 15 miles though, if that's your dilemma. Sams gas is also among the cheapest around and I purposely look for a Sams when I'm on a trip. Really good steaks and bakery goods at Sams. And if you go around lunch there are all sorts of free samples.
I'm not sure if Brits understand the concept of a loss leader. Stores in America lure people in with some amazingly ridiculous cheap deal. If they send out an advert they plaster it right there on the first page. $1.50 FOR HOT DOG (with a big picture) They're willing to take the loss on the hotdogs to get you into the store, so you'll spend $200 on other stuff while you're there. It's psychological.
@@gotham61 They push ads to the members, we get a coupon booklet in the mail that shows all the deals of the week and email for daily deals. Another good deal is home appliances, the prices are cheaper than the big box stores, you get pretty good manufacturers discounts , and Costco Bucks which don't expire, to use in the store or online as a rebate...which makes the prices even lower. Oh, and their bath towels are large and thick they last forever.
Having lived in London, the reason Costco works for Americans so well is due to the size of our pantry’s and refrigerators. The portion sizes at Costco are enormous and we have space to store the products. I myself have a huge refrigerator in the kitchen and another in the garage. My parents have four refrigerators, two main sized ones and two mini fridges.
same I got 3 refrigerators one being a sub zero and 3 stand up freezers.. I'm a huge alaskan fisher so I bring a ton back once a year and freeze it and my dad is a hunter so I keep his elk, moose, deer, and bear for him
The prices on most food items are better than at the regular supermarket, and in many case significantly better. The drawback is that often you are forced to buy in bulk, which can problematic, particularly for a single shopper needing anything perishable.
The thing about Costco is they actually vet their vendors for quality and price, so I know I'm getting a high quality item when I buy something there. Not any company or brand can sell at Costco. But the biggest bargain is the legendary hot dog and drink for $1.50! And it is the best, biggest hot dog out there. They are sooo good.
The UK and Europe are different in that they don't usually have our size fridges or freezers. I lived and worked in London and the whole pace was different - more going to the market every day. Sainsbury's was a treat, felt all posh.
The "jet blower" is a leaf blower that people use to blow leaves and pine needles for lawn care. My husband also uses it to blow the water off his truck when he washes it. The price you saw for the ground beef was $3.99 per pound of meat. The roasted chicken was priced at $4.99 for the entire chicken. The Costco hotdog and soda meal is the best deal in town! There is a reason it is a staple menu item.
America is huge, and we only have the ocean on two sides so usually seafood is more expensive here because it needs to be shipped from the east coast most of the time. This is also why meat like beef is so popular here because it can be raised virtually anywhere.
Yes, the Pacific (W) and Atlantic (E) but there is also ocean (S) that little thing called the Gulf of Mexico 😉 I do agree though, it's expensive getting that fish inland.
Plus, we are over fishing around the world and fish are not as plentiful as decades ago. Fish and gasoline will only get more expensive because they are limited resources.😢
The hotdog is good but the previous polish dog was LEGENDARY. Alas, despite a massive uproar, they did stop selling the Polish dog. I do love the hotdog as well. Many local establishments buy in bulk and resale as part of their own menu. That is at least part of the reason things are so large plus, if you can use it all, it keeps you price (per) down compared to buying smaller (regular) sizes of everything
I read some comments but a lot fail to mention that everything in Costco regarding food & household goods is what’s called “family size” or “value packs” which means the products are mostly huge or multiple boxes/packages per item.
And some things are actually cheaper per unit if you get them at a supermarket or Walmart instead of buying in bulk. Moreso if the items are likely to spoil. You don't want fruit in bulk. It will go bad before you can eat it all. It only makes sense if you're having a party today and plan to use it all.
@@protorhinocerator142Yup, bulk fruit is great if you're making a large batch of homemade jams or fruit pies, but I mainly have my Costco membership for the gas prices and insurance for my vehicle, because their rates beat out all others when I decided to go with them. Bulk items that are in case-packs of grocery store sizes that I frequently use but not quickly enough for a gallon-sized can is good sometimes, especially nonperishables that have a long shelf-life or can be frozen for a few months is good too. Many years ago I went "Costco crazy" and learned the hard way what items are not the best value when you don't use it up fast enough and it sadly goes bad so you end up having to throw it away 🥺 So I stick with WinCo for the smaller sizes of items that are much more manageable 😊
Hey Lewis my wife shops at Costco twice a month and she found out the reason why the hot foods are so cheap is a courtesy to the customers and thanking them for being a Costco member and the food is pretty good! If you need a member ship, you can go into the store and sign up, it’s easy where I’m from. Soon as you sign up they take a picture of you and print it to a member ship card right in front of you.
It’s probably a loss leader for them. They probably lose a dollar or two on each but while you are there you spend more buying their other goods. It’s a win win for everyone.
I just got my son to Lego R2-D2 for his birthday lol even though he just turned 19 I have never seen him so excited and spend so much time on what I consider a toy
One of the founders of Costco has directly stated to his successor as CEO “If you raise the price of the Hot Dog, I’ll f***king kill you.” And for the record, the Hot Dog is so good for only $1.50. That also includes a drink and refill
To get a membership you just walk in the front door and go to the membership desk and pay $60. They will take your picture and give you a membership card with your picture on it (it's also available digitally on your phone). It's not hard. The hotdog is really good. The hotdog/soda, pizza and rotisserie chicken prices won't change. Costco is very proud of that. It keeps people coming in regularly. "Costco's chief financial officer Richard Galanti was asked in 2022 if the company would ever raise the price, to which he replied that the hot dog and soda meal would remain $1.50 "forever." If the hot dog and soda combo kept up with inflation, it would cost nearly three times as much at about $4.21"
in the UK you must be a vendor of some sort with a license, the average person cannot purchase a membership to Costco. It's like NAMM here in the U.S., the general public can't just buy tickets and go.
By keeping their hot dog , pizza and other food items consistently low they are just keeping their customers coming back and spending more time within their stores hence more product sales- this is just a great business philosophy
The big differences between Walmart and Costco. Costco is usually premium quality food, where Walmart is usually filled with additives, food coloring, etc. Almost everything at Costco is sold in bulk or large quantities. Good for families or businesses but anyone can get a membership.
Hahaha. Years ago my husband and kids were talking about what to do during a zombie apocalypse and I said the same thing. “What are you people talking about? Just go to Costco.”
Behind the freezer doors is a giant room full of frozen food that they use to stock the shelves. When you go around to the other side there are more doors with more food. Sometimes Costco is cheaper, but not always when you compare prices to other grocery stores. And the other drawback is you need to have enough room to store the giant packages. I freeze whatever we aren't using to make dinner or lunch for the day. Costco hot dogs are strangely amazing and huge. The food at the Costco Cafe is actually really good. And Churros are the most amazing delicious thing that is made in Mexico. It is fried dough with a cinnamon/vanilla flavor rolled in cinnamon sugar. A real Churro (not one from Costco) is amazing. You dip them in chocolate. Mexico has amazing sweets.
12:25 lol "Im surprised theres nothing on top" LMFAOOOO. The upper levels of those coolers are closed to the public but inside there's a medium-sized hallway and about 3/4 more levels above the first one....you just can't see it lol. It's one of the greatest BJs/Costco/Sam's Club mysteries you learn as a kid when those doors are randomly open and you peer inside while employees restock.
The Quiche is pronounced: Key-shh. A quiche is: Quiche is a French tart consisting of pastry crust filled with savoury custard and pieces of cheese, meat, seafood or vegetables.
A membership is about $65.00 a year. You just buy the membership in the store. If you buy large packages of meat (beef, pork, poultry and fish) you can divide it up and freeze it. I typically make large batches (4-5 gallons) of soups, stews, chili and tomato sauce and freeze it in quart sized containers. I don't buy a lot of canned veggies, but I do buy frozen. Same process...break it up into smaller quantities and freeze. The large packages of pasta & rice will keep for quite a while as long as your home is relatively cool and dry. I live in Florida, so the a/c is on 10 months of the year. The $1.50 hot dog is actually very good. Costco is great for stocking up on things you use frequently, especially if you have a large family, or, in my case, entertain frequently.
Yes 😅!! The chocolate muffin is delicious 😋! I bought them, faithfully, when I was raising my kids. I bought everything in bulk, for a family of 5. It's a precious memory .
But honestly, they really are gigantic cupcakes. Leave one sitting on a napkin or paper towel for an hour. Watch the fat stain grow. They are delicious and I can't resist them, but I don't buy them because they are a junk food. Each one is nearly 700 calories and 40 g of fat, for goodness sake. Dang, I was just there today and now I'm sorry I didn't buy some. No, I'm not. Yes I am.
I forgot to mention the vanilla cake from the bakery. Best cake ever. 15.99 and it’s 10 inches across and has cheesecake for the middle frosting. It’s massive. The chocolate, leave it on the shelf. Pumpkin pie is 5.99 and you can cut 12 slices and that a big enough slice for a regular size dessert.
Costco is a Warehouse Club. It is mainly for businesses like restaurants, small stores like 7-11, and company offices. There are different types of memberships available depending on your needs. Company memberships offer employees a membership card as a bonus. There are early morning hours for businesses so they can get in and get out. The rest of the day is for single memberships. Sams Club is often less expensive and they carry more items. Sams Club will also deliver your order. Their membership is less expensive. In both places you do not need a membership card in order to buy alcohol or to use the optical dept.
We joined Costco earlier this year because I have severe hearing loss and I found out they have a hearing aid center. I got hearing aids for $1600 that would be 10k normally. Then my husband got two pairs of bifocal glasses with tint, glare protection, scratch protection for total $140. It’s crazy. Since we joined we’ve bought a 75” tv, an air purifier, waterpiks and a bunch of other stuff…none of which we were shopping for 😂
Exactly, you have to go in with a list but in one night they may move an entire section but while looking for it you see 10 things you never knew they had. Gotcha again!!
I go to Costco every weekend. The food is delicious. The prices are cheap to keep the members happy. Anyone can buy a membership. I live around the corner from Costco, and the gas alone pays for the membership. It's an all beef hot dog. It's 1/4 pound hotdog. An entire pizza is $10. It's worth it if you have one close by you.
I lived in China for 2 years. When I came back to the US, going to shop at even a moderate size grocery store was completely overwhelming. Costco and Sam's club stores are absolutely huge - like airplane hangers.
"Everything Bagel" is a mix of seasonings, that include garlic flakes, onion flakes, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and kosher salt. They even sell little bottles with just the seasoning itself, it's really good!!
17:00 fun fact, Costco sells emergency food buckets for pretty cheap. 25 year shelf life. Perfect for a doomsday bunker. And yes. The food is really that good for that cheap. It's been a company policy for many many years to not raise the price.
Costco bought a meat processing plant to maintain the quantity and quality of their hot dogs, which has led to their being able to offer other meat offerings. And yes, the hot dog is all beef. I love their cheese pizza and will often grab a slice on my way out
Costco is very popular with people who own businesses. Because you can buy in bulk for your restaurant or whatever facility you're trying to stock up. Even people who own vending machines will buy a lot of stuff here to keep the machines in stock. But I think most people who shop there just like to indulge in the variety, and have a lot of product on hand. Costco will even donate food to charities and food pantries if they can't sell all of their inventory.
Absolutely! I am an RTV clerk (return to vendor clerk) at Costco and we donate hundreds of pounds of food to our local shelters and schools! But we don’t just donate food, anything we can donate will be donated😊
Trust me, Lewis still hasn't grasped the concept of buying in bulk, either on the consumer side OR the retailer side and how it works. Those dogs probably cost Costco .30 to offer and that fountain drink is just what's called a consumable, and every big business does it. That's money a big company already factors in they will have to spend (maybe out of pocket) on things just to attract customers or to present a better looking product. They won't even see that money anyway and those are their own hot dogs anyway. So yea $1.50 would sound crazy to someone. It's an odd concept to him even after all these videos. LOL.
You can often spot the vendors buying in bulk. Instead of using a normal shopping cart they get one of those wheeled flats. They have a pile of supplies on there that will fill up the back of that Chevy Suburban or whatever they drive.
Fun story: when the retired founder of Costco found out that the recent CEO was going to raise the prices of the $1.50 hotdog, he personally sent him a death threat through an email if he dared raise the price. The price is still $1.50 to this day. Same with the $5 chicken, price hasn't budged in decades. Also, that 3.99 for the meat was per pound, so a sack like that would cost upwards of $40 (at least, out here in southern California)
The only thing I don't like about Costco is that not all products are sold consistently (non-food items). So I've learned the hard way......if I see something i like, I buy it immediately/asap because if I return to the store next week/month, they may not carry that item any longer.
Yeah, they sold a beef jerky that was so good. Reminded me of the fruit beef jerky i used to get in Vegas (trust me, it's tasty 🤤😆). I was so sad to go back in one day to find they stopped carrying it. 😭😭😭 It wasn't a major brand, so they probably only ran with that one shipment, but it was delicious and i was so sad at its absence.
When you buy the bulk items, you take them home and divide into smaller more normal size meats etc for the freezer. The hotdogs and pizza are wonderful. They sell it cheap to lure folks in and hopefully they will go shopping before eating.
Seafood is expensive. Most of the states do not border the ocean. Scallops are particularly expensive - but they are cheaper than buying from the grocery store IF the grocery store has it. The ground beef was $3.99 a POUND, not the whole package. The whole package is about 6 pounds. Yes you pay for a membership. You can get it through business you work for. The basic membership is like $65 a year.
Have been a Costco member since the 1990's. Why I still go to local groceries is for small lots of fresh produce, where bulk-purchasing doesn't make sense. You forgot to mention the free tire pumps (with membership). Very important for those of us in the mountain western US, where tire pressure often needs to be tuned for local conditions.
My Costco is on a major traffic corridor, and the gas station was so popular that traffic would back up on a side street. They finally built a new station with more lines and three pumps deep.
Costco is a yearly paid subscription. You just walk up to the exit gate, tell the dude there youre going in to apply for membership. Go in, and up to the customer service counter (should be 15 - 30 steps from the exit) pay $75 and get your picture taken. And bam, costco member
14:09 this is why we have big fridge and freezers. Cosco and sams club are so cheap to buy things in large sizes, we make what we will eat then we freeze the rest.
@@FlyOverZone I strongly disagree. Blueberry and cinnamon bagels are not nearly sweet enough to be grouped with donuts. There is a place for both savory and sweet-ish bagels.
I buy one or two every time I go, take it apart and freeze single portion sized pieces. I make stock from the bones and add onions, carrots, celery, garlic, pepper corns, bell pepper and use it for homemade soup/gravy.
We love the rotisserie chicken but my dog however, goes insane when I come home with it. But, since the seasonings aren't good for dogs, I have to bring her a little something different. Canned chicken works :)
Costco food quality and customer service has been consistently outstanding for the 25 years I’ve been a member. My wife and I raised 3 sons and when they were growing up Costco was a weekly trip and saved us a great deal of money. It was perfect because the bulk sizes worked for our family size. Now that our sons are grown we go to Costco once a month and for specific items we use. We also go when we are having a party at our house. The prepared food, though I don’t eat it often, is excellent. Like other foods Costco has not raised prices on others have mentioned, the pumpkin pie offered during the holidays also has not seen a price change and in my opinion, is excellent.
@@daynechastant They are for the most part...the big-name brands but with their label, and they insist that their products are much better than the name brand.
A friend of mine used to get a bunch of Costco dogs and a keg for his birthday party. The dogs would all be all be in individual foil pouches and you could just grab one out of the oven where they stayed warm. Condiment bar on the counter. An epic setup, and legit great party food. Costco dogs are no joke.
England has always been a fishing nation. The nearness of ocean causes lower fish prices. If you are in areas close to the ocean, prices are similar to your price. If you live near the ocean, you fish.
I've been a longtime member. I bought my two flat screen smart TV's and laptop at Costco. The warranties on electronics are amazing. I love this store.
I feel like Costco was originally meant for small business, but buying stuff in bulk saves money for people with big families or for things you’ll save money on overtime (40 rolls of toilet paper). I’ve only been once and I’m in the U.S. for membership you can get it online or in the store in person - it’s for anyone, and not reserved for people with a business.
Anyone can join! Business owners, but also the general public. There is the Goldstar membership, which is the basic for I think it’s $60 a year and then there is the executive membership which gives a percentage kickback accumulated during the year.. so if you get the executive membership, your percentage kickback for purchases will usually more than cover membership and then some! They have excellent customer service!
A lots of restaurants buy those large cans of vegetables or when a person prepare a services of food to carry for a party or a celebration. But there are some very large families that is here in the USA
Bro - THE FOOD IS ACTUALLY GOOD!!!! Costco refuses to raise the prices of the hot dog and the rotisserie chicken. They want you to come in. Also, at $120 per year, the top membership becomes free after 2% cash back rebate when you purchase much of your goods there including tires, food, and household supplies. Costco also has a reputation for selling quality products which has effect when you STRONGLY consider the chain for your electronic, clothing, and houseware goods purchases too.
The Costco $1.50 hotdog and coke is very famous. The original CEO was adamant about keeping it at that price. Costco's original CEO was big about taking care of his lowest-level workers, which is why they actually paid their workers double the minimum wage for a long time. The food stand is where most of the employees ate at, so the CEO was adamant on making sure the price didn't go up on them.
Costco and Sam’s Club are what we call big box stores. They sell everything in bulk. Sometimes it’s just too much. You may want 1 lb meat, but you’ll have to buy 3 because that’s the way it’s packaged. I used to shop Sam’s a lot when the kids were home, now just occasionally because I don’t need a ton of food! 😂
You can buy membership online. The food is delicious. I think membership is like $60/year. The huge quantities can be broken up and frozen. Remember we have huge refrigerators and freezers. Plus a lot of us have Pantry's the are walk in size. It saves a lot of money.
The enclosed freezers and fridges (white box with glass doors) actually has racks inside that have storage on shelves (usually 3 levels) above the glass doors. One end has a forklift accessible door, for it to get inside the unit and access the particular pallet space on the racks to restock empty pallets behind the glass doors.
Americans have a huge buy in bulk, separate and store culture. For instance, we get a pack of 20 pork chops and bag them up individually or portion them out, then freeze them. Costco is for large families and companies. If you're single, it's kinda not worth it unless you share a food budget with roommates. Costco sells in bulk when it comes to food. What's good is that you can always ask someone who has a membership to tag along and shop with them, or, you can add another person to your account so they have their own card. My work used to get cakes and pizza for company parties from Costco. Its a simple easy cheap way to feed around 200 people.
Last year I bought a deep freezer to store steaks in. I grill out every Saturday. Yum. Publix (regular super market) has recurring sales on ribeye steaks or standing rib roast (pretty much the same thing). I just got notified Publix has the bone-in ribeyes on sale for $8.99 a pound, which is more than half off. Time to stock up. I have my own breaker knife (cheap online) and I typically cut my own portions. Lately I've been cutting them bone thickness, which is 2 inches. You need to cook them a little longer to get that perfect medium rare. But man, can you get a ridiculously good maillard reaction cooking them that long! If you have a Publix near you, go look for those $8.99 ribeyes. I know I will. I portion them up, throw them in freezer bags, and deep freeze them. At Christmas they were selling for about $6 a pound. I bought a ton and saved so much with that sale, it paid for my deep freezer. Long term strategy there. No regrets.
I am single and the gas prices, the great shower head I bought and the $600 Bombay dresser I bought were well worth the membership fee. Winter sweat suits etc. very good stuff still save money after membership.
If you have a big family, these large sizes are great. But a lot of us have an extra freezer- I have one in my garage, so we can freeze extra stuff too. Not everyone uses Costco, but it is great for some things, especially meat & seafood.
you can get a $60.00 membership or $120 membership. The most expensive includes the ability to purchase cars, vacations, and other things at a discounted rate.
So, in the U.S. Grocery stores sell rotisserie chickens at a loss, to convince people to come in and shop in their stores. Usually, if you go in for a rotisserie chicken, you will buy a lot more than just that item. Costco functions on the "buy in bulk" system. You have to buy a lot of stuff, but it ends up selling for cheaper. You can't buy one paper towel roll, you need to buy a minimum of 10. Do that with every item, and not all houses have the storage space to shop at Costco all the time.
That's where a neighborhood Coop comes in handy. One buys and the rest split up the cost and pitches in for the gas or take turns going. So much cheaper then.
The $1.50 hotdog and soda is an amazing deal! Plus the soda always has free refills and is all-you-can-drink. I usually get that and a $2 cheese pizza slice for lunch after I finish shopping. One thing they didn't show is the alcohol section which is also phenomenal. I've bought some really good wines there for cheap.
So, the beef is 3.99 per pound and those packages are HUGE but the quality is GREAT. I usually buy the organic beef because the taste is amazing and they come in packages of 4, 1lb packs. (Easier to freeze or portion). The rotisserie chicken IS 4.99 total and is known as a loss leader. They sell it for a loss b/c they. know it gets people in store and once you're there, you're buying a TON of stuff. Chicken and apple sausage are SO GOOD. I was surprised myself. And yes, Costco IS cheap but you're buying in bulk so it's much cheaper per lb or per piece. Costco is also well known for picking things that are good quality.
I have a costco membership. You can actually find better deals at local grocery stores. Just have to watch for loss leaders. Costco doesnt really have sales on groceries compared to other stores. For example, ground beef was on sale at a nearby store for $3.49, plus dh got a military discount of 10%. So final price was about $3.15/lb. I loaded up at that price and filled my freezer. Their non grocery items are usually pretty good deals. Their rotisserie and hot dog prices are really good. Also, dont forget the exchange rate between usd and British pound.
FLORIDA MAN HERE! I don't know what the rules are in Britain, but here in the states, you don't have to own a business to have a Costco membership. Truthfully, I think you may just be assuming that. In order to get a membership, all you need to do is go to one of their stores and look for the application desks, which here in the States are near the stores exits. Just tell the employees who are minding the doors that you want to apply for membership, and they'll let you in through the out door, and you can go up and apply. It's ridiculously simple: you pick the level of membership you want, pay a one-time-per-year fee, you get your picture taken for the I.D. card, and once they've printed out your card, you're good to go. The place truly is amazing. I've been needing to go back for a few supplies for weeks, but I've been a bit lazy. I believe this video is the universe telling me to get off my rear and get to the store, so thanks! :)
Likely the same at Costco, but at Sams Club & BJ's business owners are offered earlier shopping hours than regular members. Business memberships have a higher membership fee but have annual rebates based on your volume. So on top of the low bulk pricing, we would get rebate credits of hundreds $ per year.
My wife and I have shopped at Costco for years, and the membership pays for itself as you get an annual rebate based upon your expenditure over the course of a year. We usually go once or twice a month and stock up on food items and practically anything else we need. I've bought tires, auto batteries, appliances, and electronics, including multiple TVs, and have always been happy with the prices and quality. It is one of our favorite places to shop, and I usually pick up a slice of pizza and take home a $5 rotisserie chicken.
An everything bagel is a type of bagel baked with a mix of toppings. The exact ingredients vary, but recipes often include garlic flakes, onion flakes, poppy seeds, sesame seeds and kosher salt. The bagels are made with regular dough and the name is independent of additional fillings such as cream cheese. And the Hot Dogs at the food bar are AMAZING! Best deal around too!
This is a myth, unfortunately
Costco hotdogs are a loss leader. They intentionally lose money on them because they bring people in. Who doesn't love a Costco hotdog? All beef and so yummy.
@xion19922 I am an all beef hotdog lover & boy. They're the best. 🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭🌭

I LOL’d so hard when he froke out about the ground beef price 🤣
This should help:
It’s $3.99 PER POUND - not per package. Those were at least $20-$30 each.
The “Jet Blower” is a LEAF blower.
Anyone can get a membership. You just sign up online or in-store and pay the annual membership fee. Easy peasy :)
It’s called an “everything bagel” because it has a mix of common toppings.
Agreed ❤
And the frozen latte is so good in an Arizona summer.
Yep. I got my membership in 97. When I started a big sized hot dog and a drink with refills was $1.50. Today the hot dogs are bigger but still $1.50.
Costco and Sam's have great hot dogs!
As is Sam's Club.
The ground beef is $3.99 a pound.
Everything bagels have all of the toppings - poppy seeds, garlic, onions, etc.
3.99 a pound is still relatively cheap…
Earlier today I chose not to pay $7.99 a pound at Walmart. It was the leanest option, but I just couldn’t do it.
Nope! Too much!
Everything are really good with cream cheese. Yummy.
God bless him.
and that a legend. those hot dogs are gonna be 1.50 in the fuckin apocalypse. over the founders cold dead body
\
they then opened they own hotdog factory to keep the price down and eventually opened a 2nd one
Rotisserie chicken for $5.00 is the best< the best hotdog, ever!!!
Never been to a Costco. We don’t have one in my area, but we do have a Sam’s Club. Idk how the prices compare to Costco, but I’m guessing they’re fairly similar…
People outside of America are in awe about Walmart. People in America are in awe about Costco.
Costco >>> Walmart
I do Sams Club because it's closer. Sams has two cooler rooms. One with the milk, eggs, and creamer, and one with produce, berries, etc.
The milk room is much colder. On a hot day it's great to just go into that room and breathe. So cold.
There's usually a heat exchanger dripping cold water somewhere in the room. Stand under there and let that ice water slowly drip right onto your back. Yessssss.
@@protorhinocerator142Sam's is a little bit better than Costco imo.
@@GeorgeOrwell-yz6zx
I’ve been saying the same thing for years. I’ve always thought Sam’s club was better than Costco. Sam’s Club also came first yet everyone thinks Sam’s Club copied Costco. I would love for him to react to that as well.
@@hawks6973 Just not that simple, one really can't replace the other
Even as an American, the amount of EVERYTHING at Costco or SAMs club still amazes us.
A Costco membership starts at $60 a year. I paid for mine in what I saved on 1 visit.
wait, mine is $50 wtf
You just need a gift card to use it if you aren’t sure about a membership. Also don’t need a membership for the pharmacy. So if Lewis went he could get a $25 gift card and go.
@@CKaffeineIVStat yeah gift card is definitely the way if he only wanted to go for content as opposed to actually shopping there regularly (i think i heard someone say there aren't very many in the UK so it might be a long drive for him)

I’m actually an exclusive member because my parents own a business. The difference is the card is a debit or credit card that is connected to a bank account. I buy a lot ok. My card is $120 a year. But I do get some freebies every year.
I had a cookout last week.
12 sirloin beef patties
12 bratwurst
3 large bags of chips
A pallet of 35 coke cans
3 lbs of grapes
3 lbs of strawberries
1 whole watermelon
2 lbs of cheddar
Ketchup, mustard, BBQ
12 burger buns
12 sausage buns
Less than 80 bucks at Costco
Any party we have we go to costco for the food, unless we are going to go ahead and buy a half pig or cow from the local butcher - which usually runs us around $1500 for a half cow and the meat lasts around 6 months in the deep freezer. But we usually go through it before then. We are doing a seafood boil for father's day and I am getting everything from Costco.
@@HazyHippieDamn!!! I'm spoiled I guess. I have 2 cousins and a 3rd cousin that own cattle ranches here in Montana. I just help with the branding season and can get a whole steer for $1200 cut and wrapped.

@lawabernathy9256 Agreed. There is no way. I shop at Costco regularly and that stuff would definitely cost more - especially with the meat.
The ground beef price at 8:39 is per pound. Those packs look to be about 5lbs maybe so it’s actually closer to $20-25 per package
It's so easy to get a membership card, just go inside Costco to a customer service and buy it there. You are a member right away. By the way, Costco products are not expensive to buy is because we want the customers to come back over and over again. I work at Costco and I love It.
Now you can buy them directly, but when Costco first started out, you had to be a member of a credit union to get one.
I've heard that Costco treats its employees like human beings rather than objects.
It’s true! They are closed on the major holidays and have shortened hours on the weekends.
I dont think he quite gets how big the amount is. These prices are for bulk packages not grocery store packs of things.
And the rotisserie chicken is a loss leader.
My friends jokingly call it “the $100 store.”
I was sitting here watching this, and I suddenly realized... That's my Costco!! I was literally there 3 days ago!! WOW lol.
It looks exactly like my Costco, but maybe they all look the same?
I thought it was one of my CostCos Bay area?
I’m pretty sure I just had this same realization LMFAO
Lol I thought the same! Mine is very similar but the gas station is in a different spot.
Quiche is an “egg pie”. Pie crust with egg mixed with meats / onions / green pep / red pep and baked. It is delicious
@@protorhinocerator142 I'd rather support a company that treats its workers fairly than Walmart who doesn't

Stores in America lure people in with some amazingly ridiculous cheap deal. If they send out an advert they plaster it right there on the first page.
$1.50 FOR HOT DOG (with a big picture)
They're willing to take the loss on the hotdogs to get you into the store, so you'll spend $200 on other stuff while you're there. It's psychological.

The prices on most food items are better than at the regular supermarket, and in many case significantly better. The drawback is that often you are forced to buy in bulk, which can problematic, particularly for a single shopper needing anything perishable.
yes but the savings on TVs and other things make it worth it in the long run. You could share with a relative or friend.
You open the big packages/ cans and use freezer bags to do portions and freeze what you don't use.
The UK and Europe are different in that they don't usually have our size fridges or freezers. I lived and worked in London and the whole pace was different - more going to the market every day.

Oh my gosh, using a leaf blower to dry the car after washing it. Genius!
My husband too - I thought he looked crazy first time he did it. Glad there are others!
Or Alaska if you're on the west coast
Many years ago I went "Costco crazy" and learned the hard way what items are not the best value when you don't use it up fast enough and it sadly goes bad so you end up having to throw it away 🥺
So I stick with WinCo for the smaller sizes of items that are much more manageable 😊
Hey Lewis my wife shops at Costco twice a month and she found out the reason why the hot foods are so cheap is a courtesy to the customers and thanking them for being a Costco member and the food is pretty good! Behind the freezer doors is a giant room full of frozen food that they use to stock the shelves. When you go around to the other side there are more doors with more food. That is true. 👍🏻
The Quiche is pronounced: Key-shh. A quiche is: Quiche is a French tart consisting of pastry crust filled with savoury custard and pieces of cheese, meat, seafood or vegetables.
😂.. yes I laughed at that, it was funny
aka: Egg pie XD XD XD (as one friend described it to me.)
Haha, I was about to say it's an egg pie lol 😂
We call that egg pie at our house. My husband won’t eat quiche. lol
A "coochie" is something completely different lol.
Laughed so hard when he seen the price of the hotdog and drink and then looked into the camera lol
Those costco muffins are where it's at. All flavors, especially the chocolate.
Yes 😅!! The chocolate muffin is delicious 😋! I bought them, faithfully, when I was raising my kids. I bought everything in bulk, for a family of 5. It's a precious memory
.
The coffee cake muffins are pretty good, although I like putting butter on the blueberry muffins.
@@kjwade6606 Yes! I forgot about their cake!! Their cake is fire!!!!
It’s crazy. Since we joined we’ve bought a 75” tv, an air purifier, waterpiks and a bunch of other stuff…none of which we were shopping for 😂
That’s how they get y’a! 😂
Exactly, you have to go in with a list but in one night they may move an entire section but while looking for it you see 10 things you never knew they had. Gotcha again!!
YEAH, COSTCO IS REALLY GREAT. I HAVE A HARD TIME PASSING UP THEIR BAKERY SWEETS.
Oooh, i need a waterpik... I'll keep it in mind the next time i go. 😆 I usually do Sam's cuz it's literally a couple blocks away.
@@lynnettesue6240 I just looked for this at Sams. Now, to go to Costco. LOL
7:33 its called everything bagel because it just has a whole bunch of seasonings on it
The Detroit Pizza he showed is EXCELLENT!
Costco has great deals. You get good prices when buying bulk. You divide the packages and store in freezer bags in your deep freezer
The blowers are used for cleaning driveways and pathways of dirt, and clearing leaves in the fall off our lawns.
I have a small blowers I use on my patio and in garage. 25:18
Costco bought a meat processing plant to maintain the quantity and quality of their hot dogs, which has led to their being able to offer other meat offerings.
And yes, the hot dog is all beef.
I love their cheese pizza and will often grab a slice on my way out
Yup, they cut out the middleman. They also do this with plants where they sell top line products under their name. Plant to store. Smart
LOL.
@@BrLoc they lure you in with the cheap hot dogs, and you walk out with $200 in stuff you don't need. 🤣
@@mikeywestside8509Tell me about it. Me and my mom spend almost $300 per trip. 😅
You can often spot the vendors buying in bulk. Instead of using a normal shopping cart they get one of those wheeled flats. They have a pile of supplies on there that will fill up the back of that Chevy Suburban or whatever they drive.
Costco sells items that you don’t see in the store. They sell travel packages, caskets, windows for your home, etc.
I forgot about the caskets
Their florist section is REMARKABLE! Best flowers for the best prices!
Huge bouquets!
W retired founder
*Sam's Club* which is like *Costco* but owned by *Wal-Mart* both have cheap (Hot Dogs & a drink) that are pretty good
The blower is for leaves and grass clippings
And the car 😃
In Arizona they come in handy after a dust storm to blow all the crap (dust, leaves, pollen, etc.) off your patio furniture and car.
Lots of big yards in the U.S.
The only thing I don't like about Costco is that not all products are sold consistently (non-food items). So I've learned the hard way......if I see something i like, I buy it immediately/asap because if I return to the store next week/month, they may not carry that item any longer.
It’s like that with some food items too. 😕
@@lynnettesue6240 Walmart (their brand), oddly sells a delicious beef jerky.
Private citizens can also buy memberships. You don't need to represent a company.
I know several Costco members.
Anyone can get a membership at Costco, I think you might be confusing Restaurant Depot with Costco.
Gas prices are usually 30 cents cheaper per gallon. Great value! Usually long lines, though. But it's worth it.
My Costco is on a major traffic corridor, and the gas station was so popular that traffic would back up on a side street. They finally built a new station with more lines and three pumps deep.
Any tire place will do that so that they can con you into buying a tire. I just thank them and drive on ;)
Costco is a yearly paid subscription.

I like to have reheat when I don't feel like cooking and cleaning up afterward. :)
Everything bagel is a plain water bagel but with a topping of popy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion.
Everything except the blueberries.
@@TheBaldryes it's a savory bagel. A bagel with blueberries or cinnamon is just a donut
I call them the worst bagels. Plain bagels are better.
@@FlyOverZone I strongly disagree. Blueberry and cinnamon bagels are not nearly sweet enough to be grouped with donuts. There is a place for both savory and sweet-ish bagels.
Everything bagels are the best. OP forgot the salt on top too.

cost co rotisserie chicken is large and very good and the 4.99 price is the best part.
It's delicious!
Kirkland brand products are, for the most part, the same quality as the big-name brands, if not better.
Costco dogs are no joke.
a leaf blower is for clearing leaves and debris from your lawn, its basically a power tool version of a rake
During covid Costco was one of the few places that was able to keep toilet paper in stock.
Not the one I went to in San Antonio
@@aj_aka_alan Not mine....all of their toilet paper must have gone to your store.
Not in Issaquah, WA, where corporate HQs are. And when TP was in stock, you were limited to one pack (of about 24 rolls.)
Our Costco was out of the two kinds of good toilet paper but sometimes had some of the meh tp left during covid.
I had gone to Costco a few weeks before the great TP run, and had purchased my paper towel and toilet paper supplies- I was never out.
England has always been a fishing nation. The nearness of ocean causes lower fish prices. If you are in areas close to the ocean, prices are similar to your price. If you live near the ocean, you fish.
And if you're lucky to be in the PNW, you have Dungeness crab, blows it all out of the water (pun intended).

Where is membership only $60.00? Ours is $180 for the year.
I think in some countries, there is a bulk issue with selling to the general public but not here thank goodness.
Costco gas is usually twenty cents per gallon cheaper
If you have a handicap parking hanger, they will pump the gas for you.😂😂
The large can are for business use but they also have smaller cans that are sold in multiple like 4 or 6 also at a great price!
Yeah for my brother's wedding he got those green bean cans for the meal
Bro - THE FOOD IS ACTUALLY GOOD!!!! Costco refuses to raise the prices of the hot dog and the rotisserie chicken. They want you to come in. Also, at $120 per year, the top membership becomes free after 2% cash back rebate when you purchase much of your goods there including tires, food, and household supplies. Costco also has a reputation for selling quality products which has effect when you STRONGLY consider the chain for your electronic, clothing, and houseware goods purchases too.
And that's what the higher level membership. You can get one for 60 bucks for basic.
You need to spend $6,000 in a year to make it free. This isn't actually that hard to do.
Yep this… come in for the cheap, hot, good food and shop. Most of the time we leave Costco with more things than was on the list.
@@adiuntesserande6893 My Son in law does it easily and loves to shop 💖I don't think he pays for his memberships anymore.

I have a freezer in my garage. I split the meat up and put into freezer bags and freeze for later.
I feel you 😊. I used to do same, for my large family 😁. I cooked, baked and fed everyone. Costco was a huge part of my life 💖
Costco and Sam’s Club are what we call big box stores.
Yep, dry ice for shipping is the way to go if you live more than an hour away...and since dry ice is unsafe inside of the car, shipping is smart.
My daughter has 8 kids (7 adopted) and she LOVES Costco! She shops there at least once a week! 😅
Jet blower is used to clean path after mowing the lawn & blowing leaves during Fall
No regrets.
Still worth it if you're single. You can also ask friends or family if they need anything and you split the items up.
I am single and the gas prices, the great shower head I bought and the $600 Bombay dresser I bought were well worth the membership fee. Winter sweat suits etc. very good stuff still save money after membership.
Membership is easy to get. Walk in and ask for one and pay for it. Costco's hot dogs are the best thing ever.
If you have a big family, these large sizes are great. But a lot of us have an extra freezer- I have one in my garage, so we can freeze extra stuff too. Not everyone uses Costco, but it is great for some things, especially meat & seafood.
The price of the hot dog and drink combo has been the same since 1984. They are committed to keeping it the same price since the beginning.
you can get a $60.00 membership or $120 membership. The most expensive includes the ability to purchase cars, vacations, and other things at a discounted rate.
Regular $60 membership allows most of those purchases. The $120 has a 2% rebate, so $3000 of purchases per year gets you the extra $60 back.
And the epic, giant hard alcohol bottles! Some are so artistic. I've bought them just for the bottle before.
Can’t buy booze in MD. There are other states where it is disallowed, too like PA.
This is American as it gets.
Costco supplies restaurants as well. That's why the HUGE coffees, sugars, yeast, cans of veggies and sauce etc ..
