Yup I noticed that right away to.i think his glutes were peeled to the bone as well.and the amount of thickness and muscularity in his back arms chest and legs were godly.not a better physique in b.b history imo.no one's beating 98-99 Ronnie hell even 03 I don't think anyone beats either
He was very underwelming from the side too. He didn't have a lot of thickness. Really only looked good when he could show off the oiled up glamor muscles and the small waist and abs. Not a whole lot more after that, quads were separated though.

Thx for this Tomn8er! Your analysis is very respected & back in 2007; the 1999 version of Coleman was rarely spoken of as a contender of his best overall physique. Myself, (Bizzy back then) Iceman 1981, Hulkster & I believe Forced Reps put quite an effort to let people know how great this version was & saw direct results from that effort. Just like the Ronnie/Russia Vodka story. Some people knew about it but after I posted my video on the MD Forums; within a week or so Ron Harris was asking Levrone about the story & it's been on a ton of Kevin/Ronnie interviews since. Although only 17, my Girlfriend @ the time watched the 1999 Olympia on VHS right before the PPV 2003 Olympia already knowing from Chad Nichols Forums back then Ronnie was around 285 pounds. Not long into it we both agreed he looked better in 1999. She had a near genius IQ and got involved in every hobby I had at the time winning several fairly big poker tournaments as I was in the top .05% on Poker Stars at the time. I 100% realize the lighting was better in 1999 but when you take the photos, backstage footage + the 2 different Grand Prix's footage & photos only from the 1st Grand Prix; it makes a strong case for his greatest physique. I’ve seen an interview that’s only a few years old and Flex insinuated that Ronnie only got the win here because he had just signed a multi-year deal with Weider. Flex said when he saw Ronnie, he and others were saying, “you got his [Ronnie’s] ass!” What?!?! Where lmao!!! Ronnie absolutely smoked him here.
Cormier looks great! He was already underrated, great mid-section for somebody as big as he was. Flex definitely looks like he has some oil in his arms.

But Yates' back is so much more shredded that I think he's run away with it) Side triceps: Dorian smokes Ronnie Abs and thighs: Dorian smokes Ronnie. Statistical 4-3 to Dorian in my book, but it's debatable, and it would be an epic showdown nonetheless
Rear lat spread might go to Ronnie, he was pretty elite here. That would be the most interesting one IMO. For the quarter turns Yates would win the sides, Ronnie the front, and again the rear relaxed would be interesting. And if MM was counted we all know who would win that.

I think it's harder for today's competitors to treat the sport as if it is all of life and perhaps worth risking death to succeed. Also, for what it's worth, today's average competitors are bigger and having to choose between coming in peeled or coming in full.

Legend says Flex was going hard with the esiclene which allegedly gave better results than using oil / synthol, although it's pretty obvious Flex was likely also using synthol at least in his arms since they have a ton of scar tissue in them to this day.
That's the main reason I put the 99 physique over the 03 physique. His waste was so much more trim and it just makes his physique look so much better and more aesthetic.
Ronnie looked better “smaller” like this. If he stayed at 250, he could’ve won 10x plus. Just my opinion- he got bloated when he grew past this and his gut got distended- he would’ve ended up healthier too
He looked amazing at the 1999 Mr. Olympia but I personally think the best physique he ever had was the at 2001 Arnold Classic. He looked insane in that show, even by his standards.
I find one thing is matching, butter smooth biceps for both runner up in 1999 & 2021.. definitely if one is using something in bicep same is replica in 2021😀😃

1999 Ronnie was a beast probably Ronnie's 2nd best physique ever. And I always thought Chris Cormier should have been 2nd place in 1999 even though Flex is my favorite Bodybuilder ever. Chris is just WAY better than Flex in the lat spreads and around the same size, not to mention Cormier has like no weakpoints in his physique besides the fact he never had shredded glutes but other than that flawless. 1999 Olympia was Cormier's best physique ever and one of the most underrated physiques of all time. But I really thought in 99 Markus Rhul should have also been way higher than he ended up placing and beaten Nasser, and maybe even Shawn or Levrone for a top 6 spot. Great video as always Tom. The thing I notice is that Coleman has more aesthetic proportions with longer legs, broader shoulders and just as narrow a waist as the others. He also has a far superior chest, which is probably the biggest difference.

As a novice bodybuilding fan, how can you tell the difference between degrees of "density" or "quality" muscle? These descriptors are kind of confusing. When I see a physique I can only tell differences in muscle size, symmetry, and conditioning...
@@M.J.D.R not really. Fullness and 3D are basically synonymous but have little to do with density. For example, check out Dorian vs Levrone in the side chest in 95. Kevin was fuller and looked bigger in most body parts, but Dorian was much denser.

But right here the most direct and simplistic way to explain density, is to refer its most literal meaning, which is having more mass concentrated in an pretty much equal surface. 2003 Ronnie was spectacular too. But at that point his gut and waistline was getting more blocky and a bit bubbly.
That's the main reason I put the 99 physique over the 03 physique. His waste was so much more trim and it just makes his physique look so much better and more aesthetic.
