- You never know what-or who-you’ll run into In the Aisles. In this episode, Derek from Vice Grip Garage talks with “DirtHead” Dave Chappelle, from the TH-cam channel DirtHead Shed. Hear Dave talk about how he found his way into fabrication, why he loves the O’Reilly paint aisle, and how he sabotaged his own vehicle as a teenager so he could land his first pickup. Also, what do yoga and spaghetti noodles have to do with anything?

Vice Grip Garage has been gracin’ the interwebs since 2019 and has pursuaded countless clunkers to run over years. Maybe only half of ‘em had brakes (and that’s being generous). Derek focuses on budget builds, rescues, and how to's for the common folk. From classic cars to tractors Derek has been there and driven it home 600 miles.

Thanks for having me on the show!!
Stay cool Dave!
Dave, I am originally from where you currently live and I'm working on moving back. It always had a solid car scene, lots to explore and every old car hasn't returned to the earth.
Ps good interview.
Christmas music FTW!! We do the same thing! Starts as early as January. 🤣 It’s hard to have a bad day whilst listening to Nat King Cole Christmas. #dirtheadshed #vicegripgarage
Appreciate you taking the time to let us get to know you and your passions. Great interview
I saw you and Derek in the same thumbnail and knew instantly how I was going to spend the next 30 minutes of my life.
Two of my favorite people on the internet.
I logged in just to say that and to give O'Reilly the thumbs up to keep this series of videos with Derick going.
Two of the best automotive personalities out there! I hope Dave gets another mainstream show, he always comes across as genuine and humorous.
I also dig the paint aisle. I pick up a can of Duplicolor semigloss black every time I'm there, because that's the color you use most building cars. Dirt Every Day needs to make a comeback, it was one of MT's best. Those two guys were so fun.
No.# 1 Tool. Hands on Education. I took auto body after school for 2 years. Got credit for it. And help get a job after high school
gotta do one of these with Mortske Repair
“Thats what drag cars do” 😂😂
I will never again be embarrassed about listening to Christmas music all year around!
the best Dave Chapelle if you ask me. great interview.
Dave Built a patina 64-66 F100 that inspired me to build my own in the mid 2000's. Saw in a magazine. I believe his shop was called The Lowering Block back then?
Derek! Do the Stud Gasser! That would be an amazing build! Must see!!!
I think it would be cool to see Dave and Derek on a off road channel and bring back Fred
Sometimes plays Christmas music out of season.
Thanks guys for making another guy feel normal!!
Or, we’re all off a bit!
The best podcast I've ever seen big Fan of both these guys just cool to see two car guys just bull shitting love it
Great show! Gotta get Lucky on too.
Derek please please please do more motorcycle stuff!!
Derek's dream build is a fun cadet lawn tractor...70s.
I think that you guys need to do one with @sleeperdude since they are right there in Tennessee and have not done anything together I think that would be a hoot of a episode
😂 I do the Xmas music to . In the summer and I’m having a bad day . I’ll have Rudolph the red nose reindeer, or some blue blue Christmas from Elvis. Then when I’m in a good mood, I’ll be listening to some old slayer or Pantera
48 Studabaker GASSER. getter!
Don't know him.... But love this guy!!!
Love VGG..2
been waiting on this one!
Mortske Repair please!!!
It's a miner's wrench 🔧 lol
Today's lesson. DIY "house wire" extension cords for 110 driveway juice! Makin' bacon!
I want to see you and Dave build the Studebaker.
id love to be on the show someday
Hello Derek
Great interview. Barbara Mandrell was country before country was cool...
Man awesome content
Texas Country!!
Barbara Mandrell not Loretta Lynn.
These are my favorite guys, VGG #1 , Dirt Head # 2…..unless Derrick does a 2 hr video, I just don’t have the attention span……squirrel!
This episode is waaay to short
I was country when country wasn't cool was Barbara Mandrell. Another great interview keep them coming.
Build a mega truck
Finger Finding Nut Fu..... never mind.
This is such a great series. Good job, oh, oh O'Reilly's. VGG is the best investment you've ever made, and ever will make. Feel free to let him know that. 😊
Dave is one of the best fabricators out there currently he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Yeah he's a fab king, but he's so low key he doesn't get hype
Jokes aside, everything Derek puts out there is worth the watch and I mean everything. He deserves all the accolades and the credit he gets, seriously doubt if there is a harder working individual out there on the old interweb.
Agree fully.
However, Derek has wrecked the curve for how much time a guy is allowed to kick back in a recliner.
I agree 100%
Having enjoyed both of your work separately it's been so fun watching you two strike up a creative friendship. Here's to much more fun and many adventures!
I like how Dave basically takes over about 2/3's of the way through :) Definitely enjoy his Dirthead Shed channel.
Dave is by far my favorite car guy to watch. Motor Trend was dumb to let him go. His channel needs more love.
My two favorite car guys to follow on the interwebs. Great content.
Thanks for doing this one with Dave!! I enjoyed meeting both you guys at #DuctTapeDrags !! You were both delightful!!
When O'Reilly and Revzilla produce the best content! What a world we live in.
Keep it up, guys.
LOVED the line at about 10:35 - Dave: "You try and buy it something nice once a year so that it sparks your interest again..." 🤣 This is all too true!
16:58
“I was country, when country wasn’t cool.” Barbara Mandrell
A feller can't wait.
Hey, O'Reilly... any chance you would foot the bill to revive Dirt Every Day (or something similar) with Dave and Fred? I really miss it.
Glad you got Dave on here!
Jesse James has a little brother? Who knew?
Dave needs his own show on Motortrend. He's a pretty cool guy and very talented.
I'd seriously watch Derek eat macaroni and cheese saying shiny to shop lion. It's not strange yet cats like him! Even at demo ranch the cat says hi! You're huge!
Dave, check out Williams Lake
I was an old school dirt every day fan back when hen it was on TH-cam before motor trend and now I follow him on the dirt head shed it is amazing what this guy is capable of. Both of you are inspiring people to get out and just start working. Thanks
It’s so awesome to get to see Dave do more frame fabrications on his channel versus the dirt every day stuff. Incredibly talented dude.
I really miss Dirt Every Day. Dave is kind of reserved but so talented and skilled and relatable
Talk to the guys at Grind Hard Plumbing about trails up that way, Dave...
You know what's awesome (besides Derek and Dave), that Dave mentioned King of the Hammers, and my top 2 favorite video/PC game is a sponsor for it.... game is called BeamNG Drive, for PC, and if you like vehicles, this is the absolute best vehicle "game"(simulation sandbox) in sheer existence, period.
You like drag racing? Check.
Drifting? Check.
Rock Crawling? Check.
Off Road whatever? Check.
Rally? Check.
Autocross? Check.
Grip Racing? Check.
Just cruising the streets in something you built by hand with thousands of custom parts and tuned by hand further than any other game currently or in past existence? Check.
You want to build a truck and crush a small EV into smithereens just because with full body physics? Check.
You want to fly or boat or something? Check.
Aerodynamic physics, fluid dynamics, gravity and pressures, traction and grip levels, soft and hard body physics and being able to break and or damage anything on the vehicle like IRL? Check.
The damn thing is awesome.... and you can play Solo, or literally on the same PC, hooked up to a large TV, with multiple Xbox controllers, and have UPWARDS of like 10 players on one system and screen simultaneously.... I'm not even kidding (it wouldn't be ideal, 10+ people on one screen, but you can, like the good old days)
I just build, usually, crazy trucks for off-road adventures, crazy 4 links, 44" tires, chopped bodies, Cummins or Duramax swapped or just a compound boosted LS for the hell of it making over 2k HP.... it's pretty fun 😅
The Kings of Rattle cans become one,
Wonder twins power's.....
ACTIVATE 💥💥
"You buy it something nice once a year" really hit home...
I HAVE A 1965 Ford Falcon Gasser for sale. BBF 545. Hughes c6 reverse pattern manual valve body with trans brake! ALL NEW ! Needs finished. I am moving and building a house.
IIRC Dave was sick as hell from this event and this looks like the beginning of it. When he got home he looked like death eating a hamburger. Glad he toughed it out!
Hi Derek, my favorite music bar none is from a New Zealand band. Their name is Fat Freddy's Drop. Give them a listen, and you will understand the magic soul filled jams of 'FFD'.❤pw
young Fellers, it was Barbra Mandrell. She was country when country wasn't cool. Not Loretta Lynn.
Man I can't believe I didn't see this sooner. Dave please don't catch the track on fire. Do it when leaving. The rest of Tucson is eh. My mother had a 92 Nissan Sentra. It was the only car I totaled come to think of it. Excellent interview Derek. I don't watch many podcasts. I never knew you were doing cafe racers. I will bring more fuel next year!
Always impressed with how good a host Derek is. Long time VGG fan here. Keep this man, O'Reilly!
And I thought I was the only one who played Christmas music during the summer!!!
Country before country was cool....Barbara Mandrell...great song
You should interview Sarah-n-tune
I Think Barbra Mandrel Sang when country wasn't cool
id love to take ya round the ranch of all the rigs i have sittin, numbers around 42 that i have now i think
I was Country when country wasn’t cool was Barbara Mandrell with a verse including George Jones.
Amazing episode. I wish MotorTrend could figure out how to get Chappelle on more shows. His ability to knuckle up on complex fab jobs with time constraints is so impressive.
8:05 great question! I really blown away when they built the two door RAV4 with a Honda engine and transmission.
About the Euro Drag car…..Volvo 240 6.2 LS Stage 3 cam, all day.
These guys and Tony Angelo are my favorite car guys out there that make great content. Motortrend getting rid of Fred and Dave was still the dumbest thing thing they’ve ever done.
Such a great show as always, I’ve always wanted to see “Alex Taylor” on an episode of in the aisles i think it would be awesome to hear her racing and gear head stories and just shoot the breeze with Derick, that would make for a great episode 👍
Derek should do one of these interviews with Ike and John from cars and cameras. That would be neat.
And if you're at O'Reilly be sure and ask for the 121G.
Come on fellers... It was Barbara Mandrell...and George Jones.😀
Dave seems so down to earth and friendly, Love this guy!
"I'm Rick James, B****!", wait! Who?
Merlin Johnson from Merlin’s old school garage would be a great interview
Lol!! that song you mentioned was Barbara Mandrell not Loretta lynn
country when country wasnt cool ,wasnt lorretta, it was Barbara Mandrell.
cortinas r not small cars, escorts were classed as mid sized when they were released cortinas next size up then the granada was bigger still , the coupe version of the european granada was a beautiful car
Dave has such a Jessie James vibe. Very cool!
just subscribed to Daves TH-cam! awesome dude and super talented.
What is the most boring thing you can do - LS swap for sure !
Country before country was cool was Barbara Mandrell
My two favorite automotive TH-camrs.
Kelly Clarkson has 2 great Christmas albums!
Cannot believe Dave’s TH-cam is not one of the biggest
Crescent wrench is aka a “Mexican Socket Wrench.”
As always Dave is all around great! Awesome dude!
DON'T GET IT RIGHT, JUST GET IT RUNNING!!!
Do the gasser Derek. it'd be so cool.
Love the conversation about Escorts. When they were introduced in the early '80's, they were actually light sporty compacts that were fun to drive, but gained bloat over the years as most models do. The CVH engines had character. An early '80's Escort with a 2.0 SPI swap would be cool. The "egg shaped" Escorts of the '90's were due to Mazda's influence on the design, a hybrid of the previous generation Escort and the Mazda Protege.
