Well, he was already dying in the beginning of the series, so he was on his way out.This was his last hurrah.... if you will.

@@danshotguns4226 Yes he probably wanted to go out in battle as now his death would be seen as something heroic. He wanted to go out in a blaze of glory (as I would think most dragons would).
