    The Andy Carroll transfer honestly just broke football for me. Every time I see a mad transfer fee I just remind myself that Andy Carroll once cost £35,000,000 (£50m inflation adjusted) and at the time was _the eighth most expensive transfer in football history._
    Nothing made sense after that.

    • @Nstanier
      @Nstanier 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      The Andy Carroll transfer in my eyes is literally one of the worst transfers of all time. Liverpool basically scammed Chelsea, offloading Fernando Torres, off the back of a truly awful season, for £50m, and then instantly went and got themselves scammed by Newcastle, knowing Liverpool had money, and throwing £35m of that on an absolute donkey that had only ever looked good in the Championship.

    • @brettpilkington9539
      @brettpilkington9539 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      To be fair to Liverpool the Suarez transfer basically overrided that mistake and they made a decent profit on him so overall the Torres money was well spent.

      Just to play devils advocate somewhat, he scored 11 goals in 19 PL games leading up to the transfer, and looked extremely good for Newcastle, becoming an England international in the process. Imagine what you'd pay now for a striker with that record, probably not a disimilar amount even when factoring in inflation. I'm not saying Liverpool didn't overpay, but it wasn't quite as outrageous as people make out. Obviously he flopped bad at Liverpool, but thats easy to factor in hindisght. Liverpool could only go off his previous performances and record which had been very good for Newcastle.

      @@discreetelite I think part of the problem was that he didn't want to be there at all lmao I think he cried when he was told Newcastle accepted the bid (also all the injuries)
      everyone knows Mike Ashley is a greedy cunt and everyone but Liverpool knew they were overpaying for a home grown Geordie kid who loved his club more than pretty much anything else lol but at the same time they were getting something like 16.5x his market value at the time of the transfer which is I'd imagine quite difficult to refuse

      At least Caroll was a young striker. To me, nothing is compared to Chelsea forking out 35m pounds on Danny Drinkwater.
      I remember Caroll signing was shocking to everyone but did generate a bit of excitement in certain fans section. Drinkwater signing was a literal meme from the day of his announcement.

They still won 2 la ligas and a ucl with him, and if it wasn't for his lack of fitness, Vini Jr. might not have had the chance to become the world-class player he's today. @@lk7923 Started overweight, wasn’t performing, got injured, and he never came back. He had plenty of time to come good but he never did. 7 goals in 76 games over a span of 4 years is putrid for a 115M signing. Coutinho wasn’t good for Barcelona but at least he had his moments and even at his worst he contributed more than Hazard. The main reason why Coutinho’s move is seen as much worse than Hazard’s is because the state of both clubs. Barcelona wasn’t good financially or sporting-wise during much of Coutinho’s tenure, so he was under a microscope. Hazard on the other hand did nothing but steal 20M euros a season from Madrid on top of his gigantic fee, but since Madrid kept on winning and it didn’t affect them he sort of got a pass. Also as Alfie argued Coutinho was never worth that much money, plus he never really was going to be a good fit alongside Messi, just like Griezmann. His signing for Barcelona was bad sporting-wise, but it became atrocious because of external factors (fit, fee and the financial state of the club). Hazard’s was terrible sporting-wise, but it didn’t affect Madrid that much

    Modric first year at Madrid is SEVERELY underrated and overlooked and I’m not saying that just because he flourished into one of the legends of the game. You could see from day one that he oozed of talent, his first touch and passing were world class and he gave everything even if he was subbed in in the last 10 minutes of the game. That he would be named LaLiga’s worst signing is a disgrace and worth of an investigation.

    Alfie you should really consider doing a video on the Bosnian men's national team, from being ranked 13 in the world in 2014 and qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil, to not qualifying for a single tournament since, yet managing to win their uefa nation leagues group, but genuinely hitting our lowest point with a 2-0 defeat to Luxembourg. Aging players, players who represent other national teams that are eligible to play for Bosnia but aren't seeming interested, just the genuine geopolitical mess that Bosnia is with how the Dayton agreement was meant to simply end the Bosnian war yet became the country's de facto constitution. I think it would make for a very interesting video, and could even span additional videos like how Velez Mostar are forced to play away from their original stadium in Mostar as it is on the Croatian side of the river, with their old stadium being taken over by Zrinjski Mostar. A club that was actually banned in Yugoslavia because of their nationalistic origin

    Sigurdsson was never a bad player for Everton (and obviously nobody could've predicted the noncing that led to him being let go for nothing), and at times looked like one of Everton's best players.

    Eden Hazard is an obvious template for this; but I find it fascinating due to the quality of the player's skill or dedication never being in question.
    I do suspect, however, it would lengthy to research as the context would be greatly different for each player. And reaching a conclusion into why performance declined so significantly would be near impossible.

    Looking at the 19/20 season I still wonder what Frankfurt was doing to unlock Jovic, Haller and Rebic

    • @rainernaid4378
      @rainernaid4378 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      first of all the coach (Niko Kovac); Kovac understands the mentality of players like Rebic and Jovic; Kovac was Croatian national coach, he knew rebic before (also he is croatian/german). and the trio just were perfectly together;
      Haller as the clear 9, Rebic on the left wing, and jovic playing around haller. since haller is a big guy u need at least one defender if not two defenders on him, which makes room for Jovic, who just is athletic and deadly striker (if he has the time).
      I always felt, that Haller couldnt perform in WestHam since the tactics didnt suit him..
      still miss that trio at frankfurt 🥲
      EDIT: I believe that Kovac was just the perfect coach for Frankfurt at that moment. The team overall had great mentality, which (i believe) unlocked the potential of the player.

      You’re right. He had an okay second half of the season, but I think it’s because he didn’t hit the ground running at the start where he was just hitting the post, and lacking pace, and only scoring a penalty at home to Newcastle late on before the new year. But in the second half he reminded me of Torres at Chelsea which was not scoring many, but when he did they were important ones as maybe some of his goals probably wouldn’t of gained us 95 points although most of the goals were coming from Lampard and Gudjohnson I think. He had a very good pre-season though…

    That being said, it's kinda chump change for City and I don't feel like when the transfer was happening anyone was really saying "oh Kalvin Phillips is gonna shake up the league and make City so much better, he's such a star player" etc., He was Leeds' star player for sure but idk, it doesn't feel like a flop when he didn't really play; he didn't play badly he was just far from needed, which I feel like people already suspected going in

Considering the highest transfer price a Scottish team has paid in the last 20 years is about 8 million. For context, around the same time Alan Sheara went to New Castle for 15 million around the same time. This was a massive amount for any club and for Flo to only really play a handful of games with a handful of goals this has to be up there for consideration.

    12/13: Modric did struggle at Madrid in his first season but he became a club legend and the first Ballon D'or winner in the peak Ronaldo and Messi era. Song was utter dross at Barcelona.
    13/14: I think Jozy Altidore deserves a shout out for flop of the season. 60 plus Premier League games and only one goal for Sunderland is atrocious.
    14/15: As bad Falcao was at Manchester United, Rodwell at Sunderland ruined the club for years and he's joined by Ricky Alvarez.
    15/16: Actually, Turan wasn't bad at Barcelona. It's just he was never going to replace the MSN. Memphis on the other hand was hopeless at Manchester United. 18 months and 2 Premier League goals proves he ain't good enough for Manchester United plus he was more concerned about his brand than Manchester United.
    17/18: Drinkwater was one of many dreadful signings at Chelsea that season. Bakayoko, Morata, Zappacosta, Barkley were disaster class signings but none comes close to the Sanchez and MKH swap deal. Both clubs paid dearly for that transfer however Manchester United suffered more from that than Arsenal. Sanchez was passed it and carrying a high wage package while MKH was equally hopeless at Arsenal.
    19/20: Flops galore. Pepe, Maguire, Ndombele, Lo Celso, Gerson Fernandes, Kean, Hazard, Jovic, Griezmann, Felix, Delph, Piatek, Haller, Cutrone, Kevin Augustin, etc.
    20/21: Arthur and Pjanic. The swap deal that ultimately destroyed both Juventus and Barcelona in the long term. Both are cash strapped and still struggling to clear the debt. Werner wasn't bad but he was struggling for goals despite his good all round game.
    21/22: Only one winner, Romelu Lukaku aka Lakaka. Left Inter to prove a point at Chelsea only to completely piss off the entire Chelsea fan base with that infamous interview and never recovered since.

    At 2:45, can anyone help me understand why Everton didn't qualify for UEFA cup while the two clubs above and below them did?

      The two above them, Liverpool and Blackburn, qualified by league position. Of the two below them, Southampton, as FA Cup runners-up, took the spot won by Arsenal, since Arsenal qualified for the CL; Manchester City qualified through the Fair Play rankings. Neither of those is now used. These days the FA Cup spot, if vacated, would be filled by league position. Fair Play rankings aren't used for anything.

    Drogba did not hit the ground running, and Kezman was only 5 million and hardly got his game.
