      These are workity, work, work, work. Their little bellies need constant replenishing. They are sure to tell you so. If you are determined, take their proceeds and compost your garden with it. You'll need the lettuce. But there is no finer thing, that to take part in the circle of life.

      Distribution and regularity. Toss it in one place, you guarantee argument. Pigs stop where food is, so it can't be all in the same place. But yes, that goes all day. If we missed someone, they come up and tell us. That can't happen with a cage, unless you are around.
      Or in.

      By rounding on our herd on the regular. Some of our guys would rather that we didn't, thanks anyways. Getting eyes on each and every one, can be a challenge, which is one reason why keeping them reasonably well contained and on an interactive schedule, is important. They have an excellent memory, and are creatures of habit, so managing them in this number is as much about maintaining trust in our interactions with us.

    • @annabeltemple230
      @annabeltemple230  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The natural birth control method of rodents is attrition. Disease and predation. As we minimize this to our best ability, we also impose separation of boys and girls. But even with full brakes on their reproductive proclivities, mistakes are made. Rarely enough that we can find homes for the perhaps dozen or so per year, but even though we make a point of giving them away, the full time responsibility of a pet is a hard sell. As a decision, pet guinea pigs are a rarity. As an accident, they are a happy one. We'd no idea of the treasure in love and happiness they embody. Now, life is hard to imagine without them.
      We've a decade or so of getting grass by the barrow each day and feel we could do with a couple more. It's the little things, that make you wonder. Most wonder at us. We wonder at guinea pigs. They do their best to make needs known. We learn a bit more every day. To us, they're worth it.

    • @annabeltemple230
      @annabeltemple230  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SUPERDRIOD Orchard grass, is the definition used by farm stores. It's best in late Spring, but you take what you get. They'll have rice straw, if that's all that's going. Alfalfa is hard for them to utilize, but any farmer will tell you it depends how hungry they are.

    How is it possible to keep that many healthy, etc. Nails need trimming, the boars need personal areas maintained, particularly old ones.
    I'm all for helping out the g. Pigs and if thier health is maintained I would support what you are doing there.

    • @annabeltemple230
      @annabeltemple230  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Were there good reason, it would be them as proof of concept to show these animals could be healthy and happy despite what gets put out in overweening disinformation by shelters out to make a buck. We are not trying to talk anyone out of their money, need no support, and are therefore less suspect. We insist on giving our animals away instead of charging a "rehoming fee", so our only motive is to find decent and loving homes out of genuine care. The list goes on as to what we must do for their well being and what we are accused of by people who have "heard things". But the more we try to show what is going on, the more we are told what we are doing. At some point, people look at the pigs and realize something of how they are doing. This is the point we would like to begin with. There are many things we are given to understand, often quite mistakenly. We are willing to be wrong, but not change what we do, based on what some have heard.

      That said, I like the question. It is bravely matter of fact in how we regard and treat animals, in the valid point that we could treat them less worse, if not more better. It is not humane to pick up your meat in the supermarket. It is complicit. The least one could do if we are truly principled, is pay the actual cost which includes taking the life from which it came. If we felt obliged to do that ourselves we would make different decisions, and a great deal less suffering would be in the world. Whether we see it or not.

      @@aresblue8522 They have personalities, much as we do. It depends on their space. If each have one, they often sort it. We put them in a cage match, and wonder why it happens. Some feel proprietary about their homes, but all will find their place in the heirarchy. It may need earnest discussion. If it is not too much for us, they find it. But there needs to be an option for them to leave.

    These appear to be well-cared for, happy guinea pigs. Much better than a pair in a small cage on some child's dresser, where all the light are off in the house all day long with the kids at school and parents at work. Then, for a short time, the guinea pigs get some attention, hopefully their cage cleaned (but often not), some food and then again the lights go out while the kids sit on the sofa watching TV while their parents chat over coffee in the kitchen. I've seen this scenario.
    If you consider that 50 guinea pigs weigh the same as a medium-sized dog and eat a vegetarian diet, 80% of which is grass or hay, then there is little to complain about when someone maintains a healthy herd - animals that would otherwise live their lives in a cage, bored all day long, with nothing to do. While i realize that some people treat their guinea pigs with the same affection and a dog or cat, we know that is not always the case.
    Likewise, someone who has a herd of guinea pigs is not necessarily an "animal hoarder". It's common for breeders of purebred guinea pigs to have between 20 - 100+, depending on the goals and disposable income a person has to raise and show these lovely animals. Far better to have private individuals with valuable bloodstock offer retired show animals to carefully vetted forever homes than pet shops who procure them from unscrupulous commercial suppliers.
    Whether there are hidden health problems or not, sick guinea pigs don't prance about, eagerly munching their food like these. They are sitting together, no teeth chattering, and no fighting. They are all fat and sassy.

    Just for fun you should play "charge" on a bugle when they all come running
