  • A new method for growing crops does away with soil, instead using a special transparent polymer film for roots to grip. Originally developed as a permeable membrane for artificial kidneys, this film allows crops to be grown in deserts or other places without suitable soil. And because it’s so simple to manage the nutrient and water supply, now anyone can start farming with no special training. Polymer film technology is also being used for food and beverage containers, dramatically extending storage life for their contents. Invented in Japan, these groundbreaking films could change the way people worldwide grow and store food.

I am impressed. similar to hydroponics. I've seen numerous videos about Japanese supermarkets. I'm impressed with packaging often designed to contain only a single item, for better protection, and thus, better quality, rather than the typical American bags containing 3+ pounds of apples, etc. I had seen videos about higher food prices in Japan because so much has to be imported as the percentage of arable land in Japan is so relatively small. I haven't read enough to see if the problem is in soil quality, which I'm guessing could be quite good because of the volcanic matter. I'm guessing the problem might be in the relatively small percentage of flat land. If my second supposition is correct, I'm curious if Japanese farmers can use terracing as is common in China. I saw a video about growing food in Singapore, in buildings, possibly hydroponics. I question the possibility of terracing and farming with this film. Another supply problem requiring importation of tropical fruits, such as bananas as most of Japan is in a temperate zone. It looks like the southernmost Island is in the tropical zone, and perhaps a few other islands would likewise be in the zone. I'd be curious to know if tropical fruits such as bananas are grown or might be able to be grown there, and thus possible cheaper to ship than from plantations further south. I'm definitely not a botanist, so I wonder whether tropical fruits might be able to be modified and grown in a temperate zone, possibly somewhat different than the original fruits, but close enough to provide a more economical alternative to the actual tropical fruits. I don't know if genetic engineering would be the only way to achieve this modern miracle, and I'm aware many people are opposed to genetically engineered food.

    • @offrianrum

@@sansun8878 Could it be link with the fact that the hydrogel used is based on sodium (as the SKYGEL that the same MEBIOL company propose in powder) ? It appears that sodium hydrogel is toxic for soils and should not be used in agriculture. It also appears that the contact of food or drinks directly with such an hydrogel is dangerous because the hydrogel contains acrylamides that can be transferred to the food. Better to check what acrylamides are but these could be some elements of answers to the problems that have been posted before

@@offrianrum I often think in unconventional matters. If I have watched carefully the film is not placed on soil. Highly impractical methodology would basically involve digging very large and shallow areas, basically lining these huge shallow pits with materials used in swimming pools, add water, film, and seeds. nutrients are pumped into the water, a gigantic hydroponic farm of sorts. It sounds crazy. Can the hydrogel be made without the use of acrylamides?

@@jimmyshaffer6613 I was skeptical too. Also nothing was mentioned about the nutrients needed for the water . And what happened to the film after the growing season. recyclable or healthily compostable or more junk to trash.? Simple traditional farming or hydroponics works Better an+ cleaner. For the liquid containers, what about how or plasticizers that people are wary about?
