Metallica's so huge they could go forever and never play another show. The fact that they're still doing it says a lot. They either LOVE playing live, love the money that comes with it, or get bored sitting at home. ;)
@Richard Harrold yea thats a fair point, but what these guys do to accrue further wealth requires WAY more physical effort than say, what Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos do to accrue it. Lars nailed it when he spoke about his rigid routine. I can totally relate to being in the same pattern and then when you go off that routine you almost don't know what to do. Ah, the joys of aging.
Just watched the 2019 Manchester England show where Metallica played for over 2 hours in the pouring rain. Epic performance and I thing they will be around for a long time to come.
I just saw the concert in Arlington Texas on 8/18 and I got to say I was worn out watching these 60 year old men perform for 2 solid hours on an enormous stage. It is incredible what they are doing at their age. The concert wasn't the best concert I've ever been to but it was great. Worth every penny.
I decided I wanted to be like James when I was 15 in 1990, and my mom got me a Gibson Explorer for Christmas. I watched all the documentary videos they put out and realized touring sucks and so does being famous so I changed my career goal to something else, and grow happier with that decision the older I get.
Touring sucks. Being in a band really sucks unless you are having big success. It always starts off exciting but then it soon turns into long days, long nights, long journeys with very little pay back. Some shows you feel on top of the world others you feel you want to throw in the towel. It’s hard work, you miss your family and your home comforts. For these guys to still be doing it in their 60s is amazing. Regardless of how much they earn it’s still a massive commitment doing what they do and their shows are still one of the best to see. Hats off to them all.
Lars is so down-to-earth and well-spoken, aside from him being a talented and hardworking legend. Metallica has changed the game and has inspired many musicians all over the world for decades, and I'm loving this wise old rockstar era they are currently in. P.S. Congrats on Matt O'B on his fanboy moment!
Lars is a landmark in music history, and he seems like a great person. The thing people forget about Metallica was that they were really the first band to give the fans all the dirt about themselves, and as a result made themselves look more human. As a result people stopped viewing them as monoliths, but a consequence of that is that people now think they have license to make personal criticisms at the band. Lars is genuine and honest and seems like a good hang. He also has some of the most killer drum tracks in rock and metal history. Don't let the negative nancys color your world.
The cardio level of a drummer like Lars is incredible, I'd get tired waving my arms around for 10 mins, never mind hitting drums for 2 hours every night.
Metallica is an awesome band. They have kept metal alive for over 40 years. They will keep going for another 20 years, and the fans will keep paying to see them.
I'm a year younger than Lars. I'm a drummer too. Being on the road is tough. But doing your craft is simple and you get better every night. The key on the road is to get a good night's sleep and at this age you know better than to get effed up before the show. At this age the best drummers are at their prime. Make no mistake about it. We may have arthritis in certain parts but we have perfected our craft at this point. We hit those rim shots every time.
These guys realised a long time ago, If I don't look after myself, If I keep doing what I'm doing as in the Rock n roll lifestyle well I'm dead. For a band to last as long as Metallica is quite amazing really. Any band that has lasted so long Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Saxon etc Just need to have talent and be brillaint, and tour a lot. Hats off to Lars here though I must say a 2 year world tour playing at that level of intense music you need to be super fit.
I been a fan of Metallica since 1984 (Yes, a year later) and a big fan of Conan, always watched his show Yada yada yada... But the best thing watching this interview, is seeing Sona sitting there and still being a part of whatever Conan is doing, her laughing a lot and really enjoying the interview itself. Conan "how do you prepare for a tour?" Lars "I take all the fast double bass parts out of the songs, I turn all my 16th note hi hat beats into 8th notes and I hide behind the excessive overuse of the China cymbal"

Yeah that's the weird thing about getting older.. it's no one specific thing.. like strength speed. Anything by itself is like 95% of what it was. But 95% times 95% times 95%..etc. equals feeling like crap.. so you gotta work your butt off to be 99% what you were to be even close.
I want to see Robert Smigel / Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. PLEASE INVITE HIM!!
That's a great idea... For me to poop on!
lars is younger than Conan??? I can't believe it. what's more impressive, starting Metallica and taking over the world, or Conan going to Harvard and then eventually taking over late night
Long live Metallica and Conan
Conan's hair is great
Lars is pretty interesting to listen to
Lars looks great
Very good. I love Sona's laugh 😂
She overdoes it. Like Fallon.
Conan "how do you prepare for a tour?" Lars "I take all the fast double bass parts out of the songs, I turn all my 16th note hi hat beats into 8th notes and I hide behind the excessive overuse of the China cymbal"
Hes been playing all the double bass and doing great recently.
I get anxiety when I’m not in my daily health regimen of exercise, adequate sleep , nutrition and supplements.
Me too 1963..may
Dave’s still out there doing it to Lars.
Fun facts: 1. Even if it hurts so many dumb Metalheads, Lars is more successful than 90% of drummers out there. 2. A robot with AI can now beat any drummer in the world, even simulating small errors to feel genuine. SO WHAT IS THE POINT??? Lars rocks!!! he wrote almost all songs with James.
I think the point is they arent good. The aongs are bad and the production is aweful for their resources they have
