Green Pill - Abdal Hakim Murad

  • In this Ramadan talk, Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad recollects the heavenly origin and universality of fasting. Adam and Eve were ordered to steer clear from the Tree of Eternity, and God prescribed fasting to the Abrahamic faiths. The religion of nature (dīn al-fiṭrah) reorients us to our primordial, natural selves through fasting, and a proper fast may serve to inculcate God-consciousness (taqwá) within us. Man craves knowledge of the Divine and cannot be satisfied with the distractions of dunya. We yearn for Him, and a nostalgia for Truth and the Garden whirls within us - the question, “What am I doing here?” besets us all. Numerous allegories have long served to demonstrate how abstinence draws a person nearer to God, an action done solely for Him, and rewarded as such.
This talk was delivered at Cambridge Central Mosque on Friday 24 March 2023.

I am one elderly woman who believes that Ramadan is not daunting, or difficult. On the contrary it is energising, it reduces inflammation in the body and is the best 'medicine' for the sick and elderly people who fast for the right intention.

@@ponderingspirit He's clearly aware of the term redpill and its usage in online spaces. They don't use "red-pilled" as a term in the movie. What is more likely is that he's become aware of this term due to its popularity in the childish online Islamic discourse that is being popularized by the likes of Daniel Haqiqatjou (and his opponents) and Muhammad Hijab's association with Andrew Tate and decided to include the green pill quip as a way to appeal to young Muslims and to drive them away from this infantile, vacuous debate of feminism vs redpill.

    In the breaking of dawn
    The passing of the night
    The rising of the Sun
    And the hymming of sparrows
    I saw you Allah
    In the drops of rain
    The sprouting of seeds
    The blooming of the rose
    And the scents of Spring
    I saw you Allah
    In the union of marriage
    The signs of conception
    The endurance of a mother
And the birth of a child
    I saw you Allah
In the play of the toddler
    The passions of youth
    The dedication of a father
    And the shield of morality
    I saw you Allah
    In the trials of life
    The soreness of the heart
    The weakness of limbs
    And the consolement from prayer
    I saw you Allah
In the leaving of the day
    The glory of the moon
    In the final breath
And the tears of the family
    I saw you Allah
In the crowing of the cockeral
    The lamenting of the dogs
    The harkening of the blackbird
    The silence of the wind
    And the call to salaah
    I saw you Allah
As I overheard the compelling warning
    "O mankind hasten towards good
    Lest death soon overtakes you"

Thats interesting, to see beyond the form one must be human. And to be human one must remind themselves of their mortality as human, And to remind themselves they must take actions like prayer (humility) and fasting. I'm converting to islam, i felt like christianity never teached humility. Maybe guilt but not humility. Thank you.

I lost my father yesterday, Friday before Dzuhr 9 Ramadan 1444 / 31 March 2023 (Allahummaghfirlahu warhamhu wa a'fihi wa'fu 'anhu), and I'm grieving. I'm still processing... the pain of losing him comes and goes, in waves.... Suddenly I thought of our Cambridge imam, Tim Winter / 'Abdal Hakim Murad. Though this dars does not directly relate to my situation, I'm extremely calmed by the shaykhs' familiar voice and insightful comments. 'In worship, there is freedom'. And for one who hikes regularly, his point hits especially close to home. Thank you Allah. Alhamdulillah....

Jordan Peterson and Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad should have a dialogue in Cambridge. Their combined insights would be greatly appreciated by many, similar to the impact of the Hamza Yusuf interview. Discussing the "religion of nature" (dīn al-fiṭrah) with Jordan, especially in relation to our inherent nature and understanding of evolutionary history and archetypes, would be enlightening. They can explore the balance of psychology, spirituality, and philosophy. The points made by Shaykh Murad on 'The Nature of Nature' delving into the philosophical and psychological implications of human understanding of the self from an islamic point of view would resonate with and potentially complement Jordan's expertise, bridging any gaps in his islamic understanding of Fitra and Submission.

    For Ramadan
    The auspicious month
    Of the Qur'an
    The blessed month
    Of patience
    To awaken
    From heedlessness
    And seriously reflect
    To aspire for Paradise
    And protection from Hell
    To fast from dawn
    Until the dusk
    To tame the ego
    And caprice
    And glorify Allah
    To help the needy
    And those in distress
    To ask for forgiveness
    And mend the broken ties
    To feed the fasting believers
    And the destitute
To straighten the rows in salaah
    Respecting diversity
    And uniting as one Ummah
    To productively appreciate
    The respite from Iblees
    And pray for all
    The dwellers on Earth
    Placing our trust
    In Allah alone
    And remember O Muslim
    Every second of Ramadan
    Is so very precious
    So believer cheer up!

I feel blessed to have discovered about brother Abdal Hakim. But I pray this will be a cure rather than a proof against me at the day of judgement. May Allah make you from among the close ones. Amin.
